EVERY MONTH, Natali locked herself in a room at the back of the house, guarded by Auntie Encarna with the boy in one hand and a shotgun in the other. The door was locked with a thick chain and an enormous padlock. Natali was a seventh male daughter of her family, so on nights when there was a full moon she turned into a she-wolf. If we didnβt watch out for her, sheβd end up hurting herself, causing scenes that would subsequently be dismissed as drunken hallucinations by all but the most sensational news outlets, before waking up under the trees with her clothes torn to shreds.
