Striving to save wildlife species and their dwindling habitats is a noble goal. It takes tremendous persistence in the face of those with money and power who want to expedite their short-range goals regardless of impacts on wildlife and habitat. I’ve seen both the valleys and the mountaintops. And both are empty when you try to leave God out of the picture.

God carries us up to the heights only to hurl us back down again. The path over the summit is short but the valleys are long. Anyone who has been to the mountaintop spends the rest of his days in misery.

Living in the moment means appreciating our Traveling Companion. God doesn’t just wait on the mountaintops for us. He descends into every valley with us. He offers His hand for support when the road gets rocky. He shines a light at the end of every tunnel. We have the choice of whether to acknowledge His presence or reach for His hand or look for His light along the way. But if we don’t, we create a lonely journey for ourselves.

Part of living in the moment is realizing that every stop along the way is temporary. The highest highs of mountaintop experiences can energize us, in proper doses. Any longer, they can exhaust us. Or leave us unprepared for the descent. The pits of the valley may feel interminable, but they’re not. If we follow God’s lead and double down on our faith in Him, we will find many paths out of our valleys.

Mountaintop removal is nothing but strip-mining on steroids. Appalachian coal is found in seams, sort of like layers of a cake. At the top of the mountain there is the forest, then a layer of topsoil, then a layer of rock, and finally a seam of coal. Could be four feet thick, could be twenty. When a coal company gets a permit to strip-mine, it literally attacks the mountain with all manner of heavy equipment. First it clear-cuts the trees, total deforestation with no effort at saving the hardwoods. They are bulldozed away as the earth is scalped. Same for the topsoil, which is not very thick. Next comes the layer of rock, which is blasted out of the ground. The trees, topsoil, and rock are often shoved into the valleys between the mountains, creating what’s known as valley fills. Isn’t it good to know that God is a God of the depths as well as a God of the heights? When we’re living on the mountaintop, He is there. I’m glad that my God is God of the changing places, such as the sea, and of the stable places, such as the dry land. No matter where we are, we can experience His greatness.

Ezekiel according to chapter 32 IS to speak of the eternal consequences of rebellion against You AND he is to do so with emotion. Father, we are too jaded to manufacture real lament. There are medications for people who spend much time in genuine sorrow. Bring us to the place, though, where we experience the mountaintop of absolute joy in You and the valleys of sorrow for those who are separated from that joy. If peace is a state of harmony, if it is a kind of wholeness or completeness, then we will never find it by running away from broken things and messy places. We will find it, in truth we will make it, when we draw near to the mess with shovels and paint cans. We may have a dream of peace that looks like a country porch or an isolated mountaintop, and we may receive peace in those places, like deep breaths of fresh air, but we realize our dream of peace only when we come down to that place where mountain meets valley town, country meets suburbia, city meets garden, or our past meets our present.

The title of this Chautauqua is "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," not "Zen and the Art of Mountain Climbing," and there are no motorcycles on the tops of mountains, and in my opinion very little Zen. Zen is the "spirit of the valley," not the mountaintop. The only Zen you fin on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring up there.

Mountaintop experiences do not mean that I have arrived. Valley experiences do not mean that I am on the wrong path. The only way to “assess” my progress and “evaluate” my wholeness is to look to the Word of God. With my eyes focused on the Word of God my mind will be continually renewed. With continuous renewal of my mind, my words, attitudes, and actions will be transformed. For me, this ongoing transformation is the process of Progressive, Positive, Change.

Valleys don’t last forever. Neither did the mountaintops of life, but if a person just had faith and held on, each valley would eventually end.

Mountaintops are for views and inspiration, but fruit is grown in the valleys.

The height of the mountaintop is measured by the drab drudgery of the valley.

Billy Graham once said about getting through tough times: “The mountaintops are great for viewing, but we grow in the valleys.

It’s just me up here on the mountaintop, between the earth and sky. It’s just me, the sound of my breath as I push myself up to the ridge; it’s just me, beneath the Milky Way. The stars are singing to me, the air that rises from the valleys; all of this is for me. There is a peace inside of me, a feeling of emptiness. Above me the galaxy is spinning, or I’m spinning, or we’re all spinning. There is no time, I think. There has never been any time. There is only this.

The Lord is my constant companion. There is no need that He cannot fulfill. Whether His course for me points to the mountaintops of glorious joy or to the valleys of human suffering, He is by my side. He is ever present with me. He is close beside me when I tread the dark streets of danger, and even when I flirt with death itself, He will not leave me. When the pain is severe, He is near to comfort. When the burden is heavy He is there to lean upon. When depression darkens my soul, He touches me with eternal joy. When I feel empty and alone, He fills the aching vacuum with His power. You may feel the same fear as you look at the dark world surrounding you. You recognize there are many things you need, but also so much you don’t even know you need. The reality is that God knows. And whether you’re on the mountaintop or in the valley—a place that might look like uncertainty, discomfort, even death—He’s with you. And that changes everything.

Ispent the following day roaming through the valley. I stood beside the sources of the Arveiron, which take their rise in a glacier, that with slow pace is advancing down from the summit of the hills to barricade the valley. The abrupt sides of vast mountains were before me; the icy wall of the glacier overhung me; a few shattered pines were scattered around; and the solemn silence of this glorious presence-chamber of imperial nature was broken only by the brawling waves or the fall of some vast fragment, the thunder sound of the avalanche or the cracking, reverberated along the mountains, of the accumulated ice, which, through the silent working of immutable laws, was ever and anon rent and torn, as if it had been but a plaything in their hands. These sublime and magnificent scenes afforded me the greatest consolation that I was capable of receiving. They elevated me from all littleness of feeling, and although they did not remove my grief, they subdued and tranquillized it. In some degree, also, they diverted my mind from the thoughts over which it had brooded for the last month. I retired to rest at night; my slumbers, as it were, waited on and ministered to by the assemblance of grand shapes which I had contemplated during the day. They congregated round me; the unstained snowy mountain-top, the glittering pinnacle, the pine woods, and ragged bare ravine, the eagle, soaring amidst the clouds—they all gathered round me and bade me be at peace.
