Hence, perhaps I should not feel so frustrated at the gap between me and my political enemy who is also my covenant sister. At least, I shouldn’t feel as if God is being a neglectful landlord, failing to fix a pipe that’s broken and gushing water. Difference, even between those who share ideologies, beliefs, and rites, is not a symptom of brokenness or disease. Instead, a bracing encounter with the difference built into the world is a remedy for the kind of selfishness that keeps us small. These encounters are regularly gifted to us by a loving divine parent who wants us to think big.
