In the hierarchy of man's activities, eating was the lowest. Eating had become the object of a cult, but in fact it was but the preliminary to other, utterly contemptible motions. It occurred to him that he wanted to perform one of these too.
Elias Canetti (Auto-da-Fé)
Enjoyment requires discernment. It can be a gift to wrap up in a blanket and lose myself in a TV show but we can also amuse ourselves to death. My pleasure in wine or tea or exercise is good in itself but it can become disordered. As we learn to practice enjoyment we need to learn the craft of discernment: How to enjoy rightly, to have, to read pleasure well. There is a symbiotic relationship, cross-training, if you will, between the pleasures we find in gathered worship and those in my tea cup, or in a warm blanket, or the smell of bread baking. Lewis reminds us that one must walk before one can run. We will not be able to adore God on the highest occasions if we have learned no habit of doing so on the lowest. At best our faith and reason will tell us that He is adorable but we shall not have found Him so. These tiny moments of beauty in our day train us in the habits of adoration and discernment, and the pleasure and sensuousness of our gathered worship teach us to look for and receive these small moments in our days, together they train us in the art of noticing and reveling in our God’s goodness and artistry. A few weeks ago I was walking to work, standing on the corner of tire and auto parts store, waiting to cross the street when I suddenly heard church bells begin to ring, loud and long. I froze, riveted. They were beautiful. A moment of transcendence right in the middle of the grimy street, glory next to the discount tire and auto parts. Liturgical worship has been referred to sometimes derisively as smells and bells because of the sensuous ways Christians have historically worshipped: Smells, the sweet and pungent smell of incense, and bells, like the one I heard in neighborhood which rang out from a catholic church. At my church we ring bells during the practice of our eucharist. The acolyte, the person often a child, assisting the priest, rings chimes when our pastor prepares the communion meal. There is nothing magic about these chimes, nothing superstitious, they’re just bells. We ring them in the eucharist liturgy as a way of saying, “pay attention.” They’re an alarm to rouse the congregation to jostle us to attention, telling us to take note, sit up, and lean forward, and notice Christ in our midst. We need this kind of embodied beauty, smells and bells, in our gathered worship, and we need it in our ordinary day to remind us to take notice of Christ right where we are. Dostoevsky wrote that “beauty will save the world.” This might strike us as mere hyperbole but as our culture increasingly rejects the idea and language of truth, the churches role as the harbinger of beauty is a powerful witness to the God of all beauty. Czeslaw Milosz wrote in his poem, “One more day,” “Though the good is weak, beauty is very strong.” And when people cease to believe there is good and evil, only beauty will call to them and save them so that they still know how to say, “this is true and that is false.” Being curators of beauty, pleasure, and delight is therefore and intrinsic part of our mission, a mission that recognizes the reality that truth is beautiful. These moments of loveliness, good tea, bare trees, and soft shadows, or church bells, in my dimness, they jolt me to attention and remind me that Christ is in our midst. His song of truth, sung by His people all over the world, echos down my ordinary street, spilling even into my living room.

Detroit reappeared in between the lines of the Gallup data I was studying when I noticed that the all-time-lowest approval of unions happened in August 2010. The country was still reeling from the financial crisis, and the Obama administration had just saved the domestic auto industry by extending federal loans (popularly seen as bailouts) to GM, Chrysler, and Ford. Resentment about the auto rescue drove support for unions down in 2010, but interestingly, white people—already slightly less favorable toward unions than people of color but, up to this point, still showing majority approval—had the most negative response to Obama’s Detroit rescue. White approval of unions fell from 60 percent to just 45 percent in 2010.

For example, maybe you like Spring. Spring is a good dependency injection framework. Maybe you use Spring to auto-wire your dependencies. That’s fine, but you should not sprinkle @autowired annotations all throughout your business objects. Your business objects should not know about Spring. Instead, you can use Spring to inject dependencies into your Main component. It’s OK for Main to know about Spring since Main is the dirtiest, lowest-level component in the architecture.

And we know that the period during which the influence of Christian theism was strongest, was the period when the intellectual life of civilised man was at its lowest, morality at its weakest, and the general outlook most hopeless. Religious control gave us heresy hunts, and Jew hunts, burnings for witchcraft, and magic in the place of medicine. It gave us the Inquisition and the auto da fé, the fires of Smithfield and the night of St. Bartholomew.

The phrase Buy old Gmail accounts has become a buzzword for business owners and digital freelancers alike. Let’s get clear on why old Gmail PVA accounts matter and how you can spot real value in your next purchase. Why Buy Old Gmail Accounts? Old Gmail accounts give you a head start. They’ve survived years of Google’s checks and are seen as more reliable than fresh, new accounts. Social media marketers, e-commerce companies, and even influencers turn to these accounts to: * Reach more people without delay * Sign up for major platforms that flag new accounts as risky * Keep important messages out of spam folders International reach is everything in China, Russia, Ukraine, and South Africa. Many websites and social accounts require trusted Gmail addresses to verify identity or approve registration. With old, verified Gmail accounts, companies can cross these digital borders. Plus, aged accounts carry a stronger sender reputation, which means better delivery and fewer headaches. Best of all, you don’t have to sacrifice your budget for quality. Reliable sellers offer strong, affordable options that last. The Power of Phone-Verified Accounts (PVA) Not all Gmail accounts are equal. Phone-verified (PVA) Gmail accounts use real phone numbers during setup. This small step means a lot: * They’re much harder for Google to ban. * They stick around longer, even with heavy use. * You can run several accounts at once without red flags. A good PVA account is like a sturdy tool in your workshop. Marketers and business owners who depend on mass emails or automation find these accounts save time and protect campaigns from getting blocked. How Old Gmail Accounts Build Trust Sending emails from a brand-new account looks suspicious to many mail servers and social networks. Old Gmail accounts work like a well-worn passport. They tell the internet you have a history. This opens more doors because: * Established accounts land in inboxes, not spam. * Social media platforms and registration bots trust them. * Customers see age as a sign of stability and honesty. For teams building customer support, running ads, or signing up for dozens of sites, this trust gets instant results. How to Get Cheap & High-Quality Old Gmail Accounts It’s tempting to chase the lowest price. But with Gmail accounts, you get what you pay for. Before you buy, ask yourself: * Does this seller provide all the account details? * Is the price fair but not “too good to be true”? * Can I check real customer feedback?
