Ballycumber (ba-li-KUM-ber) n. One of the six half-read books lying somewhere in your bed.
Douglas Adams (The Deeper Meaning of Liff: A Dictionary of Things There Aren't Any Words for Yet--But There Ought to Be)
The axiom of equality states that x always equals x: it assumes that if you have a conceptual thing named x, that it must always be equivalent to itself, that it has a uniqueness about it, that it is in possession of something so irreducible that we must assume it is absolutely, unchangeably equivalent to itself for all time, that its very elementalness can never be altered. But it is impossible to prove. Always, absolutes, nevers: these are the words, as much as numbers, that make up the world of mathematics. Not everyone liked the axiom of equality––Dr. Li had once called it coy and twee, a fan dance of an axiom––but he had always appreciated how elusive it was, how the beauty of the equation itself would always be frustrated by the attempts to prove it. It was the kind of axiom that could drive you mad, that could consume you, that could easily become an entire life. But now he knows for certain how true the axiom is, because he himself––his very life––has proven it. The person I was will always be the person I am, he realizes. The context may have changed: he may be in this apartment, and he may have a job that he enjoys and that pays him well, and he may have parents and friends he loves. He may be respected; in court, he may even be feared. But fundamentally, he is the same person, a person who inspires disgust, a person meant to be hated.
Hanya Yanagihara (A Little Life)
You asked how large my sorrow is. And I answered, like a river in spring flowing east.

Error can point the way to truth, while empty-headedness can only lead to more empty-headedness or to a career in politics.
Barry Hughart (Bridge of Birds (The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, #1))
You ask why I make my home in the mountain forest, and I smile, and am silent, and even my soul remains quiet: it lives in the other world which no one owns. The peach trees blossom, The water flows.
Li Bai
We sit together, the mountain and me, until only the mountain remains.
Li Bai
Reality is what we take to be true. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perceptions. What we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for depends upon what we think. What we think depends upon what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. What we take to be true is our reality.
Gary Zukav (Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics (Perennial Classics))
Marija Jurić Zagorka (Grička vještica I - VII)

My heart is burning a hole in my chest and every time you speak to me, it keeps sinking, and I'm left with nothing but ashes. I wish she were talking to me, because the more she speaks to me, the more my heart flutters like a rising phoenix. -Karen Quan and Jarod Kintz

How could a just God permit great misery? The Haitian peasants answered with a proverb: "Bondye konn bay, men li pa konn separe," in literal translation, "God gives but doesn't share." This meant... God gives us humans everything we need to flourish, but he's not the one who's supposed to divvy up the loot. That charge was laid upon us.
Tracy Kidder
The battery was a lithium thionyl chloride non-rechargeable. I figured that out from some subtle clues: the shape of the connection points, the thickness of the insulation, and the fact that it had “LiSOCl2 NON-RCHRG” written on it.
Andy Weir (The Martian)
There's no sense drawing attention to yourself, Li." "Hellooooo. I'm aHorseman of the Apocalypse, and I'm betrothed to the most infamous, most powerful demon in existence. I couldn't draw more attention to myself i I wore Lady Gaga's meat dress to a PETA convention.
Larissa Ione (Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #2; Demonica, #7))
S Tugom jednostavno treba umeti... I, pazi...
If you're trapped in a room, and nobody is coming to save you, what can you do? You have to bang on the walls and break the windows. You have to climb out and save yourself. It's obvious, Li-ling, that crying doesn't help a person live.
Madeleine Thien (Do Not Say We Have Nothing)
We are a race of people trying to find answers, and to me, religion is kind of like last year’s textbooks: out of date with too many notes in the margins from the last fucking guy.
Corey Taylor (Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good)
The aching in my chest isn't because I miss you, it's realizing that you have become someone I no longer know, your fears, your 4 am thoughts, your achievements, are things I no longer have an equivalent to. Who we were and who we are are four different people, and the me from now doesn't relate to the me from then, let alone to the you from now. -Tanzy Sayadi and Jarod Kintz

You ask me why I dwell amidst these jade-green hills? I smile. No words can tell the stillness in my heart. Peach blossoms drift streamwater away deep in mystery. I live in the other world one that lies beyond the human.
Li Bai
There are days we live as if death were nowhere in the background; from joy to joy to joy, from wing to wing, from blossom to blossom to impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.

I don't keep mistresses; it's far too much trouble. I'm offering to marry you, although I might regret it. And if you think the Lim family disapproved of your marriage, wait until you meet mine.
Yangsze Choo (The Ghost Bride)
Sumatra Sad smo bezbrižni, laki i nežni. I milujemo daleka brda i ledene gore, blago, rukom.
Miloš Crnjanski
a bruise, blue in the muscle, you impinge upon me. As bone hugs the ache home, so I'm vexed to love you, your body the shape of returns, your hair a torso of light, your heat I must have, your opening I'd eat, each moment of that soft-finned fruit, inverted fountain in which I don't see me.
Li-Young Lee (The City in Which I Love You)
When the hunter sets traps only for rabbits, tigers and dragons are left uncaught.

The supernatural can be very annoying until one finds the key that transforms it into science," he observed mildly... "Come on, Ox, let's go out and get killed.

Ye ken, we've been robbin' and running aroound on all kinds o' worlds for a lang time, and I'll tell ye this: The universe is a lot more comp-li-cated than it looks from the ooutside.
Terry Pratchett (The Wee Free Men (Discworld, #30; Tiffany Aching, #1))
Naprotiv!
Momo Kapor (Una)
He who neglects to drink of the spring of experience is likely to die of thirst in the desert of ignorance.
Li Bai
Loss was the hesitation in his voice when he spoke his mother tongue, the myths he did not know, a childhood that felt so vast and alien from his parents' that he did not know how to cross it.
Grace D. Li (Portrait of a Thief)
Because one moment in life does not define a person," Li Min said. "Without mistakes and misjudgments we would stagnate. It is no shameful thing to be beaten when outnumbered, not when you were brave enough to try. Nor is a scar or injury something to despair over, for it is a mark that you were strong enough to survive.
Alexandra Bracken (Wayfarer (Passenger, #2))
So how do you make your exit?" she asked. "In a puff of smoke? Or do you just vaporize?" He grinned at her. "Much as I hate to be a crushing disappointment to you, I reckon I'll just take the door.
Justin Somper (Black Heart (Vampirates, #4))
Every place is a good place, only time goes wrong.
Yiyun Li (A Thousand Years of Good Prayers)
-Samo sam htela da imam nešto tvoje... Zauvek... Hajde konju... Reci joj... Osetio sam da uglovi usana izmiču kontroli. -Želiš nešto moje? Zauvek? Da li bi prezime moglo da posluži?

Valter Hugo Mãe (A máquina de fazer espanhóis)
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance; commits his body To painful labor, both by sea and land; To watch the night in storms, the day in cold, Whilst thou li’st warm at home, secure and safe; And craves no other tribute at thy hands But love, fair looks, and true obedience- Too little payment for so great a debt. Such duty as the subject owes the prince, Even such a woman oweth to her husband; And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour, And no obedient to his honest will, What is she but a foul contending rebel, And graceless traitor to her loving lord? I asham’d that women are so simple ‘To offer war where they should kneel for peace, Or seek for rule, supremacy, and sway, When they are bound to serve, love, and obey. Why are our bodies soft, and weak, and smooth, Unapt to toil and trouble in the world, But that our soft conditions, and our hearts, Should well agree with our external parts?
William Shakespeare (The Taming of the Shrew)
I've never had a home before." That must have been all the sweets talking; I'd never have told him otherwise. "I mean, staying with Li, I never felt like I belonged. That's all." Sam touched my wrist, making me shiver. "You always have a home with me.

To say we know a person is to write that person off.
Yiyun Li (Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life)
No one understands now. Those who could hear a song this deeply vanished long ago.
Li Bai
The emotional health of a village depended upon having a man whom everyone loved to hate, and Heaven had blessed us with two of them.
Barry Hughart (Bridge of Birds (The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, #1))
But loneliness is as delusive a belief in the pertinence of the world as is love: in choosing to feel lonely, as in choosing to love, one carves a space next to oneself to be filled by others - a friend, a lover, a toy poodle, a violinist on the radio.
Yiyun Li (Kinder Than Solitude)
A pity it is evening, yet I do love the water of this spring seeing how clear it is, how clean; rays of sunset gleam on it, lighting up its ripples, making it one with those who travel the roads; I turn and face the moon; sing it a song, then listen to the sound of the wind amongst the pines.
Li Bai
Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar
While all bodies share the same fate, all voices do not.
Li-Young Lee
Seize the opportunities life has to offer you. Embrace the changes, and have the courage to travel on roads less travelled, even though what is in front of you could be tough, make it successful. Have determination and courage to kick down the brick walls in front of you, and to go on and achieve bigger success than you ever thought possible.
Li Cunxin
Blessed are the idiots, for they are happiest people on earth.
Barry Hughart (Bridge of Birds (The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, #1))
Meša Selimović (Death and the Dervish)
I am just so impossibly happy. Before you I was vacant of love. Now I am replete. Before you I lived without hope. Now I am inspired. Before you I was broken. Now I am whole." "Lilah," I rasped, fighting a fucking lump in my throat at her words. I tapped over my heart with my fist and said, "You're in here, Li. You're fuckin' always in here.
Tillie Cole (Heart Recaptured (Hades Hangmen, #2))
I took Russian in high school,” Nathan said, climbing out of the pool. He’d decided to swim laps that afternoon instead of going to the gym. “Did you?” Harrison asked, grinning at him. “Yeah.” Nathan grabbed his towel from the little patio table and began dabbing at his face. “But the only thing I remember is, Mozhno li kopirovat vashi domashnie zodaneeye?” “Let me guess,” I said. “You just asked me where the bathroom is, right?” “No.” He scoffed, flicking his wet towel at me. “I was beyond that basic stuff. I took two years of it. Give me some credit.” “Then what does it mean?” I asked. “It means, ‘Can I copy your homework?
Kody Keplinger (A Midsummer's Nightmare (Hamilton High, #3))
People who read poetry have heard about the burning bush, but when you write poetry, you sit inside the burning bush.
Li-Young Lee
I am aware that, every time I have a conversation with a book, I benefit from someone's decision against silence.
Yiyun Li (Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life)
Water can be as hard as ice and as soft as fog, which is why my love is so drinkable, because it is fluid and forgiving. It's easy to love until there's nothing left. Eventually, the water runs out, the ice melts, and the fog fades into an abyss. -Jarod Kintz and Karen Quan
Jarod Kintz (liQUID PROse QUOtes)
I kako Bog zapoveda. I niko nece spavati za vreme tog spavanja... Laku noc, njene pospane oci...
Luigi Pirandello (Il fu Mattia Pascal)
O great and mighty Master Li, pray impart to me the Secret of Wisdom!" he bawled. "Take a large bowl," I said. "Fill it with equal measures of fact, fantasy, history, mythology, science, superstition, logic, and lunacy. Darken the mixture with bitter tears, brighten it with howls of laughter, toss in three thousand years of civilization, bellow kan pei — which means 'dry cup' — and drink to the dregs." Procopius stared at me. "And I will be wise?" he asked. "Better," I said. "You will be Chinese.
Barry Hughart (Bridge of Birds (The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, #1))
Dole tablete za ljubav, seksualne statistike, lažne ispovesti po novinama, traume i izmene partnera! Dole alijenacija vatačine! Dole kožni divani! Ua, libido! Ua, frustaracije!

Maybe being winged means being wounded by infinity.

What's wrong with wanting everything? Nothing, as long as you know how to get it.
Grace D. Li (Portrait of a Thief)
A door jumps out from shadows, then jumps away. This is what I've come to find: the back door, unlatched. Tooled by insular wind, it slams and slams without meaning to and without meaning.
Li-Young Lee (The City in Which I Love You)
Peter! Were you looking for a horse-shoe?" "No; I was expecting the horse, but the shoe is a piece of pure, gorgeous luck." "And observation. I found it." "You did. And I could kiss you for it. You need not shrink and tremble. I am not going to do it. When I kiss you, it will be an important event -- one of those things which stand out among their surroundings like the first time you tasted li-chee. It will not be an unimportant sideshow attached to a detective investigation.
Dorothy L. Sayers (Have His Carcase (Lord Peter Wimsey, #7))
Vladimir Nabokov
Razmišljao sam kako je ono All you need is love obično sranje!

On Drinking Alone by Moonlight Here are flowers and here is wine, But where’s a friend with me to join Hand in hand and heart to heart In one full cup before we part? Rather than to drink alone, I’ll make bold to ask the moon To condescend to lend her face The hour and the scene to grace. Lo, she answers, and she brings My shadow on her silver wings; That makes three, and we shall be. I ween, a merry company The modest moon declines the cup, But shadow promptly takes it up, And when I dance my shadow fleet Keeps measure with my flying feet. But though the moon declines to tipple She dances in yon shining ripple, And when I sing, my festive song, The echoes of the moon prolong. Say, when shall we next meet together? Surely not in cloudy weather, For you my boon companions dear Come only when the sky is clear.
Li Bai (The Works Of Li Po: The Chinese Poet (1922))
Perfect. Imperfect. A pair of adjectives that come over and again, in all seasons, day in and day out, taunting us, judging us, isolating us, turning our isolation into illness. Is there a more accomplished adjective than perfect? Perfect is free from comparison, perfect rejects superlative. We can always be good, do better, try our best, but how perfect can we be before we can love ourselves and let others love us? And who, my dear child, has taken the word lovable out of your dictionary and mine, and replaced it with perfect?
Yiyun Li (Where Reasons End)
I šta, uopšte, ostaje posle nje? I neki brojevi hotelskih soba u kojima smo spavali ostaju posle ljubavi. Posle ljubavi ostaju tamne ulice kojima smo se vraćali posle ljubavi. Ostaju tajni znaci, ljubavne šifre: "Ako me voliš, započni sutrašnje predavanje sa tri reči koje će imati početna slova mog imena..." Ušao je u amfiteatar i kazao: "U našoj avangardi..." Poslala mu je poljubac. Posle ljubavi ostaje tvoja strana postelje i strah da će neko iznenada naići. Klak - spuštena slušalica kada se javi tuđi glas. Hiljadu i jedna laž. - i pitanje: "Zar nećemo zajedno?" Ovaj put, ne. Posle ljubavi ostaju saučesnici: čuvari tajni koje više nisu nikakve tajne. Posle ljubavi ostaje laka uznemirenost kad u prolazu udahnem "Cabochard" na nekoj nepoznatoj, crnomanjastoj devojci. Prepune pepeljare i prazno srce. Posle ljubavi ostaju drugi ljudi i druge žene. Posle ljubavi, ne ostaje ništa. Sranje...

As he soars, he thinks, suddenly, of Dr. Kashen. Or not of Dr. Kashen, necessarily, but the question he had asked him when he was applying to be his advisee: What's your favorite axiom? (The nerd pickup line, CM had once called it.) "The axiom of equality," he'd said, and Kashen had nodded, approvingly. "That's a good one," he'd said. I was the kind of axiom that could drive you mad, that could consume you, that could easily become an entire life. And in that microsecond that he finds himself suspended in the air, between ecstasy of being aloft and the anticipation of his landing, which he knows will be terrible, he knows that x will always equal x, no matter what he does, or how many years he moves away from the monastery, from Brother Luke, no matter how much he earns or how hard he tries to forget. It is the last thing he thinks as his shoulder cracks down upon the concrete, and the world, for an instant, jerks blessedly away from beneath him: x = x, he thinks. x = x, x = x.

Nacionalista u drugima vidi isključivo sebe – nacionaliste. Pozicija, rekosmo li, komotna. Strah i zavist. Kolektivna i pojedinačna paranoja. Kao kolektivna paranoja, ona je posledica zavisti i straha, a iznad svega posledica gubljenja individualne svesti; te, prema tome, kolektivna paranoja i nije ništa drugo do zbir individualnih paranoja doveden do paroksizma.
Danilo Kiš
Amongst the flowers I am alone with my pot of wine drinking by myself; then lifting my cup I asked the moon to drink with me, its reflection and mine in the wine cup, just the three of us; then I sigh for the moon cannot drink, and my shadow goes emptily along with me never saying a word; with no other friends here, I can but use these two for company; in the time of happiness, I too must be happy with all around me; I sit and sing and it is as if the moon accompanies me; then if I dance, it is my shadow that dances along with me; while still not drunk, I am glad to make the moon and my shadow into friends, but then when I have drunk too much, we all part; yet these are friends I can always count on these who have no emotion whatsoever; I hope that one day we three will meet again, deep in the Milky Way.

A beam or pillar can be used to batter down a city wall, but it is no good for stopping up a little hole - this refers to a difference in function. Thoroughbreds like Qiji and Hualiu could gallop a thousand li in one day, but when it came to catching rats they were no match for the wildcat or the weasel - this refers to a difference in skill. The horned owl catches fleas at night and can spot the tip of a hair, but when daylight comes, no matter how wide it opens its eyes, it cannot see a mound or a hill - this refers to a difference in nature. Now do you say, that you are going to make Right your master and do away with Wrong, or make Order your master and do away with Disorder? If you do, then you have not understood the principle of heaven and earth or the nature of the ten thousand things. This is like saying that you are going to make Heaven your master and do away with Earth, or make Yin your master and do away with Yang. Obviously it is impossible.
Zhuangzi (The Complete Works of Chuang Tzu)
Devii treptat.

Postoje u meni mnoga, neverovatna cula. Cula vode i vazduha, metala, ikre, semenja,... Oni koji me srecu, misle da ja to putujem. A ne putujem ja. To beskraj po meni hoda. Od koje sam ja vrste? Znam jednu novu igru. Cinim to dosta uverljivo.

Sventando questi attacchi, ti porti sotto le torri del fortilizio, dove fanno resistenza i Libri Che Da Tanto Tempo Hai In Programma Di Leggere, i Libri Che Da Anni Cercavi Senza Trovarli, i Libri Che Riguardano Qualcosa Di Cui Ti Occupi In Questo Momento, i Libri Che Vuoi Avere Per Tenerli A Portata Di Mano In Ogni Evenienza, i Libri Che Potresti Mettere Da Parte Per Leggerli Magari Quest'Estate, i Libri Che Ti Mancano Per Affiancarli Ad Altri Libri Nel Tuo Scaffale, i Libri Che Ti Ispirano Una Curiosità Improvvisa, Frenetica E Non Chiaramente Giustificabile.
Italo Calvino (If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler)
Želim znati jesi li u stanju vidjeti ljepotu, pa i ako nije lijepa, svakoga dana, i možeš li svoj život nadahnjivati Njezinom prisutnošću. Želim znati jesi li dovoljno snažan živjeti s neuspjehom, svojim i mojim, i da svejedno stojiš na rubu jezera i ushićeno vičeš prema srebrnom punom mjesecu: "To!" Ne zanima me gdje živiš i koliko novaca imaš. Želim znati jesi li sposoban ustati, nakon noći ispunjene tugom i očajem, umoran i do kostiju izubijan, i učiniti sve što je potrebno kako bi nahranio svoju djecu. Ne zanima me koga poznaješ i kako si dospio ovamo.

A’ight, so what do you think it means?” “You don’t know?” I ask. “I know. I wanna hear what YOU think.” Here he goes. Picking my brain. “Khalil said it’s about what society feeds us as youth and how it comes back and bites them later,” I say. “I think it’s about more than youth though. I think it’s about us, period.” “Us who?” he asks. “Black people, minorities, poor people. Everybody at the bottom in society.” “The oppressed,” says Daddy. “Yeah. We’re the ones who get the short end of the stick, but we’re the ones they fear the most. That’s why the government targeted the Black Panthers, right? Because they were scared of the Panthers?” “Uh-huh,” Daddy says. “The Panthers educated and empowered the people. That tactic of empowering the oppressed goes even further back than the Panthers though. Name one.” Is he serious? He always makes me think. This one takes me a second. “The slave rebellion of 1831,” I say. “Nat Turner empowered and educated other slaves, and it led to one of the biggest slave revolts in history.” “A’ight, a’ight. You on it.” He gives me dap. “So, what’s the hate they’re giving the ‘little infants’ in today’s society?” “Racism?” “You gotta get a li’l more detailed than that. Think ’bout Khalil and his whole situation. Before he died.” “He was a drug dealer.” It hurts to say that. “And possibly a gang member.” “Why was he a drug dealer? Why are so many people in our neighborhood drug dealers?” I remember what Khalil said—he got tired of choosing between lights and food. “They need money,” I say. “And they don’t have a lot of other ways to get it.” “Right. Lack of opportunities,” Daddy says. “Corporate America don’t bring jobs to our communities, and they damn sure ain’t quick to hire us. Then, shit, even if you do have a high school diploma, so many of the schools in our neighborhoods don’t prepare us well enough. That’s why when your momma talked about sending you and your brothers to Williamson, I agreed. Our schools don’t get the resources to equip you like Williamson does. It’s easier to find some crack than it is to find a good school around here. “Now, think ’bout this,” he says. “How did the drugs even get in our neighborhood? This is a multibillion-dollar industry we talking ’bout, baby. That shit is flown into our communities, but I don’t know anybody with a private jet. Do you?” “No.” “Exactly. Drugs come from somewhere, and they’re destroying our community,” he says. “You got folks like Brenda, who think they need them to survive, and then you got the Khalils, who think they need to sell them to survive. The Brendas can’t get jobs unless they’re clean, and they can’t pay for rehab unless they got jobs. When the Khalils get arrested for selling drugs, they either spend most of their life in prison, another billion-dollar industry, or they have a hard time getting a real job and probably start selling drugs again. That’s the hate they’re giving us, baby, a system designed against us. That’s Thug Life.
