Prince’s was a great meeting place; it was in fact very much part of the social scene, as the press of the time shows. Sydney went there often. She enjoyed skating, and seems to have become quite good at it; at the end of the 1898 diary the family go to spend Christmas in Paris, where they find the skating standard lower than in London and she and Dorothy ‘made quite a sensation’ dancing together. David, too, was a keen skater; Decca was later to say that when he was not skating he was thinking about skating, and Unity was to note his irritation at being unable to skate on a visit to Berlin.
