उसके झुके हुए सिर पर हाथ रखा तो मेरा हृदय ही हाथों में आ गया था। ‘‘सूर्यसेन! मास्टर दा! जिस माता ने तुम्हें जन्म दिया था, क्या वह मेरी दीदी तो नहीं थी?

माँ, क्या तुमने सुना है, पहले यूनान की माताएँ अपने प्रथम पुत्र को युद्ध देवता के लिए बलि चढ़ाती थीं? जन्म देनेवाले देश के हित मरना स्वर्ग पाना ही है। मेरी माँ देवी है न? मातृभूमि के लिए तुम बड़े बेटे का त्याग कर दो। तुम्हारे और भी आठ संतानें तो हैं ही।’’ मैं फूट—फूटकर रो पड़ी, ‘‘बेटा, देश से बड़ी है माँ। माँ का हृदय होता है। वह फट जाएगा। देश तो केवल मिट्टी और कंकड़ है।’’ धीर ने मेरे ललाट को चूम लिया। ‘‘नहीं माँ, नहीं, देश आपके समान कोटि—कोटि माताओं के हृदयों से बना है। उनको वेदना है, घुटन है, आँसू हैं। इस दुःखी मातृभूमि की मुक्ति के हित यदि मैं मर गया तो माँ, तुमको ‘वंदे मातरम्’ गाकर हँसना चाहिए।

बच्चो, इन बंगालियों की हमेशा ही यही विधि रही है। यहाँ की प्रकृति ही विक्षुब्ध है। समुद्र हमेशा तट प्रदेशों का आक्रमण कर उन्हें डुबो देता है। तूफान आता है। पद्मा नदी में बाढ़ आ जाती है। हैजा और गरीबी फैल जाते हैं। इनका सामना तो जाति और धर्म के आधार पर किया ही नहीं जा सकेगा।

गोपीनाथ को माफी नहीं देने की दलील पेश करनेवाले गांधीजी से मैंने कहा, ‘‘बापूजी, इतिहास तुम्हें माफी नहीं देगा। धीरता कोई अपराध नहीं। देश के लिए मारकर और मरकर ये बँगला युवक अमरता को प्राप्त कर गए हैं।’’ आखिर जाति और धर्म के आधार पर जब देश का विभाजन हुआ तो त्रैलोक्य चक्रवर्ती ने नेहरू से कहा, ‘‘किसके कहने पर तुमने बंगाल का सिर काटा,

समय की गति कितनी तेज है! पिता की तर्जनी पकड़कर ठुनकनेवाला मैं, माँ के आँचल से लटककर ‘भूख लगी है’ रोनेवाला मैं, ओफ! जमाने की हड़बड़ाहट! अंतरंग में आदर्शों के कितने बम फूटे! मेरा हृदय भयानक रणभूमि है। आज मैं कौन हूँ? क्रांतिकारी, राजद्रोही, दैवद्रोही, कम्युनिस्ट—और भी जाने क्या—क्या? लेकिन सच में क्या मैं इनमें से कोई हूँ? ओफ! कैसी परेशानी है! या खुदा!

पैरों के पास एक खुली किताब। खुले दो पन्नों पर मानव राशि का इतिहास यों अंकित— ‘‘जंजीरों में मिट्टी से बँधा होने पर भी वह काल और समय के परे देख रहा है। लुभावने कल की ओर।

ग्रीष्म के स्वच्छ जल से भरी सरिता। सरिता के किनारे आमूलचूल फूलों से लदे कुटज वृक्षवृंद। बाँस के जंगल। स्नान कर मंदिर की ओर जानेवाली सुबह की सुमन जैसी एक बालिका।

बोलो इंदिरा, बोलो, क्या शांति मजूमदार यहाँ शरणार्थिनी बनकर आई? धीर, समर, सत्य और नित्य की माँ इधर विदेशी है क्या, टैगोर, शरतचंद्र, सी.आर. दास और नेताजी के देश में खड़ी होकर मैं पूछती हूँ, ‘‘शांति मजूमदार स्वदेशी है या विदेशी? यदि तुम कहोगे कि यह मेरा देश नहीं है तो मैं इधर नहीं मरूँगी। ओह!...मेरी आँखों से आँसू निकल रहे हैं। सिर चकरा रहा है। नहीं, मैं रोऊँगी नहीं।

चितेरी जिस प्रकार चित्र को देखती है,

नाश्ता करके वाश—बेसिन के पास खड़े होकर हाथ धो रहे सत्यनेशन को जरा छू लेने को उसका मन हुआ। जब वह बीस बरस की थी, तब एक ठंडी रात में इसने उसके कन्यात्व का भेदन किया था। एक के पीछे एक—दो बच्चों को इसने प्रदान किया था, फिर एक सहज विराग की ओर पिछड़कर जिम्मेदारियों की दुर्गंधपूर्ण दुनिया की ओर उसे फेंक दिया सावित्री के सत्यनेशन ने। अंतिम स्पर्श के लिए जिस क्षण वह उसके ठीक पीछे पहुँच गई, तब मीठे स्वर में ‘सर’ पुकारती हुई होमनर्स प्रत्यक्ष हो गई। एक नुस्खा पकड़ाकर बोली कि अम्मा के लिए ये सारी दवाएँ शाम को बिना भूले खरीदकर लाइएगा। सावित्री ने देखा कि सत्यनेशन बारह सालों में जो हँसी उसे प्रदान नहीं कर सका था, वह हँसी होमनर्स को भेंट कर रहा है। उसने निर्णय लिया कि अब उसे छूना नहीं चाहिए।

चतुर्थ चली गई तो मृत्यु उदित हुई। कोई भी मृत्यु अकस्मात् नहीं घटती। अमुक दिन, अमुक पल, अमुक घटना घटेगी, ऐसा बहुत पहले से ही लिखकर रखा गया है। अंतरिक्ष के परमाणुओं को बस राह देखनी है। वायु घनीभूत हो गई। हवा निश्चल हो गई। सब—के—सब इंतजार में खड़े रहे।

भेड़िए के गले से काँटा निकालनेवाला बगुला...

हल्की सी धूप में खेत के सँकरे मेंड़ से संतुलन खोए बगैर युवक चल रहा है। उसके पीछे धोती—दुपट्टा पहने वह कृशगात्री। धूप के लगने से लाल—लाल हुए उसके गालों को, पसीने से तर उस माथे को उनका वात्सल्य सहला रहा है— ‘‘धीरे—धीरे...ध्यान से...फिसलो मत,’’ पैर जरा सा फिसला तो बचाव के लिए उनके हाथ उठ आते। स्पर्श की लाजवश उस देहाती बाला का सिर कमल—कली की भाँति झुक जाता। उनके पीछे हरे रंग का संदूक लादकर कोई छोकरा। फिर चार—पाँच बंधुजन। खेत के उस पार खड़े होकर इस यात्रा को निहारनेवाले गांधी—टोपी वाले। दुपट्टे के आँचल से आँसू पोंछनेवाली माता। छोटे बच्चे—दांपत्य की ओर बढ़नेवाली सुदीर्घ यात्रा।

पहली चली गई तो हवा बह निकली। झील की ठंडी लहरें झूम उठीं। धातु की परतों से बनी बंद जालियों की दरारों से मवेशी पानी की ओर लालच के साथ नजर डाले खड़े रहे। उनके गले में सूखे फूस के टुकड़े उलझे पड़े रहे। पानी की ओर देखते हुए वे इस भाँति तरसते खड़े रहे, जैसे जिंदगी मौत की ओर ताक रही हो। रेल की पटरियाँ जिन पर मृत्यु निद्रित पड़ी थी, निर्विकार पड़ी रहीं।

दूसरी चली गई तो सूरज हँस पड़ा। उस मृदु हास में झील चमकने लगी। काँटे डालकर मछली पकड़नेवाले पुल पर से चलकर नीचे की ओर उतरे। मछलियों को काँटे में फँसानेवाले कुलावे पानी में छाया बिछाते हुए उड़ते रहे। यह जाने बगैर कि मृत्यु उनके ऊपर मँडरा रही है।

रसकदली केले

तीसरी चली गई तो प्रकृति झकझोर उठी। अंतरिक्ष के परमाणु नवोन्मेष के साथ राह देखते रहे। अब और एक भी पुल को प्रकंपित करता चला जाए तो मुझे रक्तिम होना है, यह सोच प्रकृति रुधिर के नशे के लिए बाट जोहती रही।

बचे हुए एक मात्र पल की ओर सावित्री ने प्रचंड मन शक्ति के साथ अपनी तमाम जिंदगी का आह्वान किया। अनजाने ही उसके भीतर से एक दीर्घ विश्वास उभर उठा। अकस्मात् उभर आया स्त्री—विश्वास ठोकर खाकर बिखर गया। वायु के परमाणु दूर छिटक गए। अखबार का समाचार विशेषज्ञों ने पता लगाया है कि जिस रेल दुर्घटना में पटरियों से उलटकर गाड़ी झील में गिर गई और ध्वस्त हो गई, उसका कारण अकस्मात् हुआ बवंडर है, किंतु उस घटना की एक मात्र चश्मदीद गवाह तथा प्रदेशवासी श्रीमती सावित्री सत्यनेशन ने समाचार—पत्र के संवाददाता से कहा है कि बवंडर क्या, एक मामूली सी हवा भी उस प्रदेश में तब नहीं बही थी, किंतु विशेषज्ञों की राय में कतिपय बवंडर ऐसे हैं, जो इनसान के विश्वासों के समान होते हैं, जिन्हें नग्न नेत्रों से देखा नहीं जा सकता।

स्त्रियाँ नहीं, लड़की...वे लड़कियाँ हैं। आवाज से पता चलता है।

मैं देख सकती हूँ। मैं दूसरों के दिमाग को पढ़ सकती हूँ। गले लगाते समय हम लोग दूसरों को नापते हैं।

वह उसके शरीर के जलप्रपातों, बावड़ियों और उतार—चढ़ावों में सफर कर रहा है।

लगभग पाँच साल पहले तुम यहाँ आई थीं न कमला, फिर कैसे तुम बता रही हो कि यहीं खड़ी थीं?’’ ‘‘मैं कह सकती हूँ जेम्स। खुली आँखों से तुम जो कुछ भी नहीं देख पा रहे हो, ऐसा बहुत कुछ मैं देख सकती हूँ।

प्यार जैसी ही है नफरत भी। कुछ समय बाद उबाऊ लगने लगती है।

रिश्ता टूटने पर भी उस बारे में सोचकर दुःखी न होने के लिए हमने पहले से करार कर रखा था। इसीलिए मैं तुम्हारे साथ आई और सफर किया।
