All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don’t be too scary, and be sure there’s a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on. But you won’t have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Οι φτερούγες του ήταν κουρελιασμένες βέργες από μολύβι, αλλά ακόμα πιο βαρύ στις πλάτες του ήταν το φορτίο της αποτυχίας. Ευχήθηκε αδύναμα το βάρος να ήταν αρκετό ώστε να τον παρασύρει απαλά στο βυθό της θάλασσας κι έτσι να τελειώσουν όλα.

Δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να τα καταφέρω. Ένας απλός γλάρος είμαι, περιορισμένος από την ίδια μου τη φύση. Πρέπει να ξεχάσω αυτές τις ανοησίες. Πρέπει να γυρίσω πίσω στο Σμήνος και να μείνω ικανοποιημένος μ' αυτό που είμαι, ένας φουκαράς γλάρος με περιορισμένες δυνατότητες.

Πρέπει να το πάρω απόφαση ότι δεν είμαι πια εκείνος που ήμουν, ότι πάνε όλα όσα έμαθα. Είμαι ένας γλάρος όπως όλοι κι έτσι θα πετάω κι εγώ.

Η απόφαση του να γίνει ένας ακόμα γλάρος σαν όλους τους άλλους στο σμήνος τον έκανε να νιώσει καλύτερα. Δε θα υπήρχαν πια δεσμοί με τη δύναμη που τον έσπρωχνε στη μάθηση, θα έπαυαν οι προκλήσεις και οι αποτυχίες.

Δεν ένιωσε καθόλου ένοχος για την παραβίαση όλων των υποσχέσεων που είχε δώσει στον εαυτό του. Υποσχέσεις σαν κι αυτές είναι μόνο για τους γλάρους που αποδέχονται τα συνηθισμένα. Αυτός, που με τη μάθησητου αγγίζει την τελειότητα, δεν έχει ανάγκη από τέτοιου είδους υποσχέσεις.

Η ανευθυνότητα δεν αποδίδει. Η ζωή είναι το άγνωστο και τίποτε δεν μπορεί να γίνει γνωστό, εκτός από το γεγονός ότι έρχομαστε στον κόσμο για να τρώμε και να παραμένουμε ζωντανοί όσο περισσότερο μπορούμε.

Η μεγάλη του θλίψη δεν οφειλόταν τόσο στη μοναξιά όδο στο ότι οι άλλοι γλάροι δε θέλησαν να πιστέψουν στο μεγαλείο της πτήσης που τους περίμενε. Είψαν αρνηθεί ν' ανοίξουν τα μάτια τους και να δουν.

Ο Ιωνάθ ο Γλάρος ανακάλυψε ότι η ανία, ο φόβος και ο θυμός αποτελούν τις αιτίες που ο βίος των γλάρων είναι τόσο σύντομος και, με αυτά τα συναισθήματα διωγμένα οριστικά από το νου του, μπόρεσε κι έζησε μια μακρόχρονη κι ευτυχισμένη ζωή.

Επιλέγουμε τον επόμενο κόσμο μας με βάση τα όσα μαθαίνουμε σ' αυτόν εδώ. Αν δε μάθουμε τίποτα, ο επόμενος κόσμος θα είναι ίδιος με αυτόν και θα' χουμε ν' αντιμετωπίσουμε τους ίδιους περιορισμούς και τα ίδια δυσβάσταχτα βάρη.

Δεν είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να πάμε κάπου που δε μας θέλουν, έτσι δεν είναι;

Η ελευθερία είναι η ίδια η φύση της ύπαρξης του, πως οτιδήποτε εμποδίζει αυτή την ελευθερία πρέπει να παραμερίζεται, ανεξάρτητα από το αν είναι τελετουργία, προκατάληψη ή οποιουδήποτε άλλου είδους περιορισμός.

Η μόνη διαφορά, και δεν υπάρχει άλλη, είναι πως άρχισαν να καταλαβαίνουν αυτό που είναι στην πραγματικότητα και στη συνέχεια να το εκφράζουν.

Αυτό είναι το τίμημα που πληρώνεις όταν δε σε καταλαβαίνουν οι άλλοι, σκέφτηκε. Σε ονομάζουν ή διάβολο ή Θεό.

Ο βράζος ήταν γι' αυτό σαν μια πελώρια σκληρή πόρτα που άνοιγε σ' έναν άλλο κόσμο. Μια έκρηξη φόβου, πόνου και σκοτεινιάς τη στιγμή της πρόσκρουσης κι ύστερα βρέθηκε να πλανιέται σκυβέρνητος σ' έναν άγνωστο, παράξενο ουρανό, να ξεχνάει, να θυμάται και πάλι να ξεχνάει. Φοβισμένος, θλιμμένος και μετανιωμένος, φοβερά μετανιωμένος.
