a strategy is a coordinated and integrated set of five choices: a winning aspiration, where to play, how to win, core capabilities, and management systems.
A.G. Lafley (Playing to win: How strategy really works)
Every technology has to pass the system integration test before it can achieve widespread market success. Pre existing systems must be either penetrated, replaced, or changed to allow for the new technology to achieve widespread market success.
Hendrith Vanlon Smith Jr. (Business Essentials)
The economic system is filled with trickery, and everyone needs to know that. We all have to navigate this system in order to maintain our dignity and integrity, and we all have to find inspiration to go on despite craziness all around us. We wrote this book for consumers, who need to be vigilant against a multitude of tricks played on them. We wrote it for businesspeople, who feel depressed at the cynicism of some of their colleagues and trapped into following suit out of economic necessity. We wrote it for government officials, who undertake the usually thankless task of regulating business. We wrote it for the volunteers, the philanthropists, the opinion leaders, who work on the side of integrity. And we wrote it for young people, looking ahead to a lifetime of work and wondering how they can find personal meaning in it. All these people will benefit from a study of phishing equilibrium—of economic forces that build manipulation and deception into the system unless we take courageous steps to fight it. We also need stories of heroes, people who out of personal integrity (rather than for economic gain) have managed to keep deception in our economy down to livable levels. We will tell plenty of stories of these heroes.
George A. Akerlof (Phishing for Phools: The Economics of Manipulation and Deception)
Today I am more convinced than ever. Conceptual integrity is central to product quality. Having a system architect is the most important single step toward conceptual integrity. These principles are by no means limited to software systems, but to the design of any complex construct, whether a computer, an airplane, a Strategic Defense Initiative, a Global Positioning System. After teaching a software engineering laboratory more than 20 times, I came to insist that student teams as small as four people choose a manager and a separate architect. Defining distinct roles in such small teams may be a little extreme, but I have observed it to work well and to contribute to design success even for small teams.

A strategy is a coordinated and integrated set of where-to-play, how-to-win, core capability, and management system choices that uniquely meet a consumer’s needs, thereby creating competitive advantage and superior value for a business. Strategy is a way to win—and nothing less.
A.G. Lafley (Playing to win: How strategy really works)
An Integrator is a person who has the Unique Ability® to harmoniously integrate the major functions of the business, run the organization, and manage the day-to-day issues that arise. The Integrator is the glue that holds the people, processes, systems, priorities, and strategy of the company together.

In the same way, hybrid models of blended learning are not noticeably simpler for teachers than the existing system. On the contrary, in many cases they appear to require all the expertise of the traditional model plus new expertise in managing digital devices and in integrating data across all the supplemental online experiences in the teacher-directed rotation.
Michael B. Horn (Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools)
Strategy can seem mystical and mysterious. It isn't. It is easily defined. It is a set of choices about winning. Again, it is an integrated set of choices that uniquely positions the firm in its industry so as to create sustainable advantage and superior value relative to the competition. Specifically, strategy is the answer to these five interrelated questions: 1. What is your winning aspiration? The purpose of your enterprise, its motivating aspiration. 2. Where will you play? A playing field where you can achieve that aspiration. 3. How will you win? The way you will win on the chosen playing field. 4. What capabilities must be in place? The set and configuration of capabilities required to win in the chosen way. 5. What management systems are required? The systems and measures that enable the capabilities and support the choices. These choices and the relationship between them can be understood as a reinforcing cascade, with the choices at the top of the cascade setting the context for the choices below, and choices at the bottom influencing and refining the choices above.

Examine each question in terms of what is ethically and esthetically right, as well as what is economically expedient. A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise. A land ethic of course cannot prevent the alteration, management, and use of these resources, but it does affirm their right to continued existence, and at least in spots, their continued existence in a natural state. In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo Sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. If the land mechanism as a whole is good, then every part is good, whether we understand it or not. If the biota, in the course of eons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering. A system of conservation based solely on economic self-interest is hopelessly lopsided. It tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate, many elements in the land community that lack commercial value but that are essential to its healthy functioning. It assumes, falsely, I think, that the economic parts of the biotic clock will function without the uneconomic parts.

invisible. Yet in our new Anthropocene science, the boundaries are not so clean. As we observe the world, the lens is part of the photograph. As I’ve discussed, climate modeling is hard enough even when the modelers are not themselves part of what is being modeled. Ecologists, accustomed to studying various biomes, or communities of organisms existing in specialized environments, are now studying “anthromes,” where human activities have become part of ecological systems. Rather than simply ignore or deplore croplands, rangelands, parks, cities, and managed forests, we can put them in our maps and models and decide how we want to integrate them into the world. The

Why did Cold War Washington let Western Europe “get away” with all this light socialism when similar policy orientations led to violent intervention in the Third World? Was it only that, as Francisca said, Americans simply trusted their European cousins—who were white, and therefore responsible—to handle the task of managing democracy? A complementary explanation might be that these countries, some still overseeing remnants of colonial empire, were incredibly rich and powerful. They were much harder to push around, even if Washington had wanted to, and—perhaps more importantly—they sat at the top of the world economy. They were being fully integrated into the US-led system, and so there was much less of a risk they would try to radically reshape the global order, because it had served them quite well.

For thousands of years the answer to this question remained unchanged. The same three problems preoccupied the people of twentieth-century China, of medieval India and of ancient Egypt. Famine, plague and war were always at the top of the list. For generation after generation humans have prayed to every god, angel and saint, and have invented countless tools, institutions and social systems – but they continued to die in their millions from starvation, epidemics and violence. Many thinkers and prophets concluded that famine, plague and war must be an integral part of God’s cosmic plan or of our imperfect nature, and nothing short of the end of time would free us from them. Yet at the dawn of the third millennium, humanity wakes up to an amazing realisation. Most people rarely think about it, but in the last few decades we have managed to rein in famine, plague and war.

Bruno Bettelheim, a psychologist and educator at the University of Chicago, wrote one of the most perceptive articles about education in the aftermath of Sputnik. He observed that while liberal policymakers urged racial integration they simultaneously favored intellectual segregation. Writing in Commentary in 1958, he said that northern white liberals wanted to obliterate the color line while replacing it with a hierarchical caste system based on intelligence. The movement to the suburbs was one way to ensure that their own children had a leg up on everyone. But gifted programs (and the new Advanced Placement programs in high school) promised middle- and upper-class whites (and some blacks who made it out of poverty) greater access to the highest-quality education. Despite all the Jeffersonian talk about how talented inhered in all classes, the poor were unlikely to benefit from gifted programs or the new curriculum projects. A new caste system was in the making, parodied so brilliantly in Michael Young's 1958 fantasy, The Rise of the Meritocracy. Bettelheim sarcastically asked why elite liberals were so worried. "Have these so-called gifted been winding up in the coal mines, have so few of them managed to enter Harvard, Yale, City College, or the University of Chicago?

We need the implementation of the Smart Waterways Grid across India to harness 1,500 BCM of floodwater and connect the rivers and catchment areas as a single plane. The grid will receive 1,500 BCM of floodwater and act as a water grid so that water can be released to any deficient place and replenished during flood. It would act as a 15,000 kilometres-long national reservoir. It would be able to provide drinking water to 600 million people, irrigation to 150 million acres of land, and generate 60,000 MW of power. Due to ground water recharge, it would also save 4,000 MW of power. Each state can implement this mission with an outlay of approximately 50,000 crores with annual budgetary support, central government assistance, public-private consortia and with support from the World Bank in a BOOT (Build, Operate, Own and Transfer) based PPP model and this can be realized within 2020. Apart from this, an Integrated Water Resource Management system is also required to revive water bodies and tanks and build farm ponds and checkdams across India as well as increase irrigation infrastructure and groundwater potential, thereby enhancing the safe drinking water resources of the nation.

Across the country, poor and working-class people are targeted by new tools of digital poverty management and face life-threatening consequences as a result. Automated eligibility systems discourage them from claiming public resources that they need to survive and thrive. Complex integrated databases collect their most personal information, with few safeguards for privacy or data security, while offering almost nothing in return. Predictive models and algorithms tag them as risky investments and problematic parents. Vast complexes of social service, law enforcement, and neighborhood surveillance make their every move visible and offer up their behavior for government, commercial, and public scrutiny

As nervous systems developed, they acquired an elaborate network of peripheral probes—the peripheral nerves that are distributed to every parcel of the body’s interior and to its entire surface, as well as to specialized sensory devices that enable seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting. Nervous systems also acquired an elaborate collection of aggregated central processors in the central nervous system, conventionally called the brain.10 The latter includes (1) the spinal cord; (2) the brain stem and the closely related hypothalamus; (3) the cerebellum; (4) a number of large nuclei located above brain-stem level—in the thalamus, basal ganglia, and basal forebrain; and (5) the cerebral cortex, the most modern and sophisticated component of the system. These central processors manage learning and memory storage of signals of every possible sort and also manage the integration of these signals; they coordinate the execution of complex responses to inner states and incoming stimuli—a critical operation that includes drives, motivations, and emotions proper; and they manage the process of image manipulation that we otherwise know as thinking, imagining, reasoning, and decision making. Last, they manage the conversion of images and of their sequences into symbols and eventually into languages—coded sounds and gestures whose combinations can signify any object, quality, or action, and whose linkage is governed by a set of rules called grammar. Equipped with language, organisms can generate continuous translations of nonverbal to verbal items and build dual-track narratives of such items.

Back in the days, PMS were pretty much just that: fancy versions of excel spreadsheets: you used them to assign rooms, print attendants’ sheets or, best case scenario, manage guest invoicing. Today, on the other hand, PMS are required to manage a multitude of tasks, and they have to flawlessly integrate with a multitude of third-party apps and software: channel managers, booking engines, CRM, Yield Management tools, MICE planning software, self-check-in apps, reputation management systems… Well, you get the idea.

Cannabinoids are compounds that can activate two types of receptors within the ECS: CB1 receptors, which are located within the nervous system, brain, and nerve endings; and CB2 receptors, located primarily within the immune system. Targeting the ECS has been found to have anti-inflammatory, anticachexia, metabolic, pain management, antiseizure, and sleep-promoting effects.

Along came Aldo Leopold. He was a U.S. Forest Service ranger who initially supported Pinchot’s use-oriented management of forests. A seasoned hunter, he had long believed that good game management required killing predators that preyed on deer. Then one afternoon, hunting with a friend on a mountain in New Mexico, he spied a mother wolf and her cubs, took aim, and shot them. “We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes,” Leopold wrote. “There was something new to me in those eyes—something known only to her and the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch. I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, no wolves would mean a hunter’s paradise. But after seeing the fierce green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.” The wolf’s fierce green fire inspired Leopold to extend ethics beyond the boundaries of the human family to include the larger community of animals, plants, and even soil and water. He enshrined this natural code of conduct in his famous land ethic: “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” Carol inscribed Leopold’s land ethic in her journal when she was a teenager and has steadfastly followed it throughout her life. She believes that it changes our role from conqueror of the earth to plain member and citizen of it. Leopold led the effort to create the first federally protected wilderness area: a half million acres of the Gila National Forest in New Mexico was designated as wilderness in 1924. Leopold had laid the groundwork for a national wilderness system, interconnected oases of biodiversity permanently protected from human development.

The success of the scaling-up process depends upon the fact that the conceptual integrity of each piece has been radically improved—that the number of minds determining the design has been divided by seven. So it is possible to put 200 people on a problem and face the problem of coordinating only 20 minds, those of the surgeons. For that coordination problem, however, separate techniques must be used, and these are discussed in succeeding chapters. Let it suffice here to say that the entire system also must have conceptual integrity, and that requires a system architect to design it all, from the top down. To make that job manageable, a sharp distinction must be made between architecture and implementation, and the system architect must confine himself scrupulously to architecture.

Here are a few things yoga nidra can do: Activate the relaxation response and deactivate the stress response (which improves functioning of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and the endocrine system). Increase immunity and the ability to fight germs and infections (Kumar 2013a, 82–94) Improve heart functioning by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol (Pandya and Kumar 2007) Decrease pain Improve control of fluctuating blood glucose and symptoms associated with diabetes (Amita et al. 2009) Significantly improve anxiety, depression, and well-being in patients with menstrual irregularities and in those having psychological problems (Rani et al. 2011) Manage pre- and postsurgical conditions (Kumar 2013a, 56) Reduce insomnia and improve sleep: while not intended as a substitute for sleep, one hour of effective yoga nidra practice is equivalent to about four hours of sleep (Kumar 2013a) Increase energy, especially when needed most Reduce worry and enhance clear thinking and problem solving Improve and refresh your outlook Replace mood swings and emotional upsets with greater emotional understanding and stability Develop intuition and increase creativity Improve meditation and enhance its benefits Integrate, heal, and revitalize your body, mind, and spirit Enhance your Self-awareness and ability to experience witness consciousness (defined later in this chapter) Transform thoughts and feelings of separation into a direct experience of wholeness Finally, one of yoga nidra’s prime benefits is that it brings yoga’s essential teachings to life that have been handed down to us over the ages from the Upanishads, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Bhagavad Gita, Tantric texts, and others.

It is not uncommon to see major resolution of hypothyroid symptoms just by following a gluten-free diet. However, avoiding gluten does not cure the disease.50 It simply helps tame the immune system so it stops attacking the thyroid tissue. Note: Many clinicians find removing casein, the protein molecule in all forms of dairy, is also integral to thyroid health. There is not as much research on casein intolerance as there is on gluten intolerance, however anecdotal evidence strongly suggests a diet that is not only gluten-free, but also dairy-free promises the best results in managing Hashimoto’s.

Instead of trying to optimize your mind so that it can manage every tiny detail of your life, it’s time to fire your biological brain from that job and give it a new one: as the CEO of your life, orchestrating and managing the process of turning information into results. We’re asking your biological brain to hand over the job of remembering to an external system, and by doing so, freeing it to absorb and integrate new knowledge in more creative ways.

It does so in part “to raise awareness and enhance [its] understanding of best practice regarding ESG integration in the industry.

INCENTIVES – “From all business, my favorite case on incentives is Federal Express. The heart and soul of their system—which creates the integrity of the product—is having all their airplanes come to one place in the middle of the night and shift all the packages from plane to plane. If there are delays, the whole operation can’t deliver a product full of integrity to Federal Express customers. And it was always screwed up. They could never get it done on time. They tried everything—moral suasion, threats, you name it. And nothing worked. Finally, somebody got the idea to pay all these people not so much an hour, but so much a shift—and when it’s all done, they can go home. Well, their problems cleared up overnight.” – Here Charlie is talking about incentives. All of us who have held hourly jobs know that if workers are paid by the hour they will work more slowly than if they are paid them by the job. Why? Because if they are paid by the hour, they have an incentive to work more slowly in order to put more hours on the clock and make more money. But if they are paid by the job, there is an incentive to work quickly so they can get onto the next job and make more money. Federal Express aligned management’s goals with employee incentives. With hourly pay their employees were never in a hurry, but when pay was given for a specific task—getting a plane loaded—suddenly they were in a rush to get the job done. The key wasn’t paying workers by the task or shift; the key was letting them go home if they finished early, which was a kind of financial reward in that they were getting paid for the full shift even if they left early.

Try these journal prompts as you work to integrate your type 8 shadows: See yourself through your ex’s eyes. This can be a difficult exercise, but if anyone’s up for it, Challenger, it’s you. Write a letter to yourself from your ex’s point of view. Take a moment to remember all you did wrong and write it down—even if (especially if!) you think the failure of the relationship was their fault, not yours. What negative traits of yours do you need to own and master to be better in your next relationship? Write a letter to the person who hurt you the most in your past. Tell them everything they did that made you feel unworthy of love or less-than. Don’t be afraid to hit below the belt! Get it all out! When you’re done, put the letter away somewhere safe. Come back and re-read it two weeks later and consider whether you can see any of the negative qualities of this person in yourself. How have you hurt others? Is it similar to the way you’ve been hurt? Think about the people you love most. If you had the power, what would you like to change about them in order to improve your relationship with them? (This might also have to do with the way you resolve conflicts.) How does this action reflect on you? Based on this exercise, is there anything you might consider improving in yourself to help? TYPE 8 SELF-CARE PRESCRIPTION Type 8s tend to struggle with inaction when it comes to self-care. Since you’re always seeking progress and pushing yourself, it’s challenging for you to sit in a quiet place alone and rest. But the world is a complicated place, and you are prone to feeling angry about the things you can’t control or change. You want so much to do something to heal the pain of the world, to fix the broken systems. But you can’t fight for others until you’ve first fought for yourself by releasing the need for control and choosing stillness. Being still probably feels unnatural to you, even scary, but that’s where your real inner work begins! Learn your limits. As an energetic 8, you frequently push yourself to your limits, even if you’re unaware you’re doing so. Pay closer attention to your own feelings, and force yourself to rest and recover whenever necessary, instead of pushing through. You’ll be much better off for it! Practice mindful breathing for anger management. When you feel the need to let loose with an angry tirade, take it as a cue to practice your calming breaths. Find an outdoor exercise activity you love. When you’re feeling especially furious or antsy, hop on your bike and go for a ride or do a few laps around the neighborhood. These activities are healthy outlets for that restless energy of yours. Let others take the lead sometimes. With your commanding presence and direct approach, you make a natural leader. But sometimes, you need to step back and allow someone else to step up to bat. Take a break and learn not to carry all responsibilities on your own shoulders; this will benefit both you and your relationships with others.

At the heart of what determines a person’s behaviors related to self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness is their belief system. This includes both their conscious and unconscious belief systems. Becoming self-aware of these beliefs is a prerequisite to changing a person’s social-emotional behaviors. Models for Measuring Risk Will Not Include All Positions and All Risks. The models used to measure VaR, volatility, or whatever else will never include all positions and all risks. Positions may be missed for a variety of reasons. Perhaps some legacy computer system does not feed the main risk system, or some new system may not yet be integrated. A new product may not yet have been modeled, or someone may simply neglect to book a trade in a timely manner. A good and robust risk system will have processes and procedures for checking that all positions are captured and reporting those that are not. Nonetheless, there is always some possibility that positions are missed. Likewise, the risk of positions that are included may not be properly represented. A complex derivative security may not be modeled correctly. Some product may have an unexpected sensitivity that is not captured by the risk system. Missing positions and missing risks mean that the risk measures reported will not perfectly represent the actual risk. In reality, nobody should be surprised that a reported risk number is not absolutely perfect.

HMOs have been so successful that they now occupy a dominant position in the market for health care in the United States. Approximately forty-five million Americans are uninsured. Of the remainder, about half are enrolled in some type of HMO. Most others receive some sort of managed care plan. Less than 10 per cent of Americans still have classic fee-for-service private health insurance (down from more than 70 per cent in the late ’80s). So even though many people equate HMOs with private health care, these sorts of corporations exist only because of the failure of private markets to supply appropriate health care. HMOs succeed precisely because they are more efficient than insurance markets. There should be no illusions about the character of these organizations—they are giant bureaucracies. The largest of them, Kaiser Permanente, employs over eleven thousand physicians and has more than six million subscribers in the state of California alone. This makes Kaiser larger than most of the government-run health care systems in Canada. And while the Canadian system is extremely decentralized, Kaiser Permanente is a single, vertically integrated corporation.

Marc Goodman is a cyber crime specialist with an impressive résumé. He has worked with the Los Angeles Police Department, Interpol, NATO, and the State Department. He is the chief cyber criminologist at the Cybercrime Research Institute, founder of the Future Crime Institute, and now head of the policy, law, and ethics track at SU. When breaking down this threat, Goodman sees four main categories of concern. The first issue is personal. “In many nations,” he says, “humanity is fully dependent on the Internet. Attacks against banks could destroy all records. Someone’s life savings could vanish in an instant. Hacking into hospitals could cost hundreds of lives if blood types were changed. And there are already 60,000 implantable medical devices connected to the Internet. As the integration of biology and information technology proceeds, pacemakers, cochlear implants, diabetic pumps, and so on, will all become the target of cyber attacks.” Equally alarming are threats against physical infrastructures that are now hooked up to the net and vulnerable to hackers (as was recently demonstrated with Iran’s Stuxnet incident), among them bridges, tunnels, air traffic control, and energy pipelines. We are heavily dependent on these systems, but Goodman feels that the technology being employed to manage them is no longer up to date, and the entire network is riddled with security threats. Robots are the next issue. In the not-too-distant future, these machines will be both commonplace and connected to the Internet. They will have superior strength and speed and may even be armed (as is the case with today’s military robots). But their Internet connection makes them vulnerable to attack, and very few security procedures have been implemented to prevent such incidents. Goodman’s last area of concern is that technology is constantly coming between us and reality. “We believe what the computer tells us,” says Goodman. “We read our email through computer screens; we speak to friends and family on Facebook; doctors administer medicines based upon what a computer tells them the medical lab results are; traffic tickets are issued based upon what cameras tell us a license plate says; we pay for items at stores based upon a total provided by a computer; we elect governments as a result of electronic voting systems. But the problem with all this intermediated life is that it can be spoofed. It’s really easy to falsify what is seen on our computer screens. The more we disconnect from the physical and drive toward the digital, the more we lose the ability to tell the real from the fake. Ultimately, bad actors (whether criminals, terrorists, or rogue governments) will have the ability to exploit this trust.

Financial management takes on a new meaning when you enter a partnership with a private equity group. There are software systems marketed to investment firms to consolidate their financials among the companies they own. For them, it has many benefits. It simplifies financial reporting and management of their investments. For the operating companies, it may provide huge value if their current reporting systems are inadequate. However, if your company has a well-implemented modern system, this can be a burden. Imagine having someone come in and require that you abandon your cuttingedge integrated system and, instead, put your reports in their format. I have a friend who was a CFO with a modern ERP system who was required to integrate their company’s reporting with an antiquated Excel-based report generator because their new equity partners required their charts to look a certain way. It cost them time and money that could have been applied to building their company’s value elsewhere.

Managers handle parallel projects all the time. They juggle with people, work tasks, and goals to ensure the success of every project process. However, managing projects, by design, is not an easy task. Since there are plenty of moving parts, it can easily become disorganized and chaotic. It is vital to use an efficient project management system to stay organized at work while designing and executing projects. Project Management Online Master's Programs From XLRI offers unique insights into project management software tools and make teams more efficient in meeting deadlines. In recent years, scientists have come to understand that consciously controlling your breath can have huge benefits on your overall system, primarily with regard to the regulation of your nervous system in relation to anxiety, depression, and restlessness. The vagal response is the stimulation of the vagus nerve, which runs down along the anterior portion of your spine from your brain to your internal organs. When the vagus nerve is stimulated, a signal is sent to the brain to reduce your blood pressure and calm your body and mind, reducing stress and helping to manage chronic illness, as healing can happen only in a more relaxed state of being. For example, if your amygdala, the nerve center at the lower-central part of your brain, is agitated, it triggers your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and your fight-or-flight response. You may become anxious, fearful, reactive, or frozen. Once triggered, this response lasts at least 20 minutes, but you can often find yourself stuck in this state for much longer. According to Dr. Mladen Golubic, an internist at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, when in this state, you take shallow chest breaths, sometimes halting the breath completely, extending the effects of your SNS response. By taking deeper and fuller breaths, especially by allowing the abdomen to relax and expand, the vagus nerve is stimulated, and calm can quickly be restored. This calming and stress-reducing response is called the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) response, or vagal response. When your SNS is calmed, you have more access to the prefrontal cortex of your brain, boosting your ability to think clearly and rationalize. Dr. Golubic goes on to say, “The vagal response reduces stress. It reduces our heart rate and blood pressure.” This regulation of the nervous system is one of the primary benefits of a consistent pranayama practice.

If you have economies of scale, penetration pricing often works best Would your business benefit from economies of scale? (Most web businesses do.) If so, your ideal pricing strategy may be penetration pricing—charging a low price, basing your financial model on eventually reaching market-dominating economies of scale. Supply-side economies of scale mean that your profit margins increase the more you sell, because as you sell more, your cost of sales (unit costs) usually becomes lower, and your fixed costs become a smaller fraction of your overall costs. Demand-side economies of scale mean that the more customers you get, the more value each customer gets from your service, for the following reasons. You may benefit from having a network of customers. For example, if a phone system had only two users, only one type of call could be made (one between User A and User B). If it had three users, then three types of call could be made (A–B, B–C and A-C). If it had twelve users, sixty-six different types of calls could be made. The overall value of a phone system to its users is roughly proportional to the square of the number of users. You may benefit from there being a market of complementary products and services. The project-management web app Basecamp has many integrations, which it promotes on its website. At the bottom of the page, Basecamp shows off how quickly it’s acquiring new users, to persuade other companies to add integrations. You may benefit from having a bigger knowledge base, more forums, or more trained users. The ecosystem of knowledge around a product can be valuable in itself. WordPress grows because it’s easy to find a WordPress developer and it’s easy for those developers to find answers to their questions. You may benefit from the perception that yours is the standard. Users are aware of the value of choosing the ultimate winner—especially when they have to invest time and resources into using your company—so they will be attracted by the perception that you’ll win.
Karl Blanks (Making Websites Win: Apply the Customer-Centric Methodology That Has Doubled the Sales of Many Leading Websites)
Already in the Bell System there were about 73 million phone calls made each day—and the numbers kept climbing.6 In the earliest days of AT&T, company engineers realized the daunting implications of such growth: The larger the system became, the larger the challenges would be in managing its complexity and structural integrity. It was also likely that the larger the system became, the higher the cost might be to individual subscribers unless technologies became more efficient. To scientists like Jewett, Buckley, and Kelly, that the growth of the system produced an unceasing stream of operational problems meant it had an unceasing need for inventive solutions.
Jon Gertner (The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation)
There are only three of these activities that the Systems Integrator MUST provide and MUST be expert at. These are: Project Management, Systems Engineering, and Subcontract Management. Everything else can be assigned to subcontractors to perform, but these three activities must be performed by the prime contractor.

What is sensory integration therapy? This form of occupational therapy helps children and adults with SPD (sensory processing disorder) use all their senses together. These are the senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Sensory integration therapy is claimed to help people with SPD respond to sensory inputs such as light, sound, touch, and others; and change challenging or repetitive behaviours. Someone in the family may have trouble receiving and responding to information through their senses. This is a condition called sensory processing disorder (SPD). These people are over-sensitive to things in their surroundings. This disorder is commonly identified in children and with conditions like autism spectrum disorder. The exact cause of sensory processing disorder is yet to be identified. However, previous studies have proven that over-sensitivity to light and sound has a strong genetic component. Other studies say that those with sensory processing conditions have abnormal brain activity when exposed simultaneously to light and sound. Treatment for sensory processing disorder in children and adults is called sensory integration therapy. Therapy sessions are play-oriented for children, so they should be fun and playful. This may include the use of swings, slides, and trampolines and may be able to calm an anxious child. In addition, children can make appropriate responses. They can also perform more normally. SPD can also affect adults Someone who struggles with SPD should consider receiving occupational therapy, which has an important role in identifying and treating sensory integration issues. Occupational therapists are health professionals using different therapeutic approaches so that people can do every work they need to do, inside and outside their homes. Through occupational therapy, affected individuals are helped to manage their immediate and long-term sensory symptoms. Sensory integration therapy for adults, especially for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, may use everyday sounds, objects, foods, and other items to rouse their feelings and elicit positive responses. Suppose an adult is experiencing agitation or anxiety. In that case, soothing music can calm them, or smelling a scent familiar to them can help lessen their nervous excitement and encourage relaxation, as these things can stimulate their senses. Seniors with Alzheimer's/Dementia can regain their ability to connect with the world around them. This can help improve their well-being overall and quality of life. What Are The Benefits of Sensory Integration Therapy Sensory integration treatment offers several benefits to people with SPD: * efficient organisation of sensory information. These are the things the brain collects from one's senses - smell, touch, sight, etc. * Active involvement in an exploration of the environment. * Maximised ability to function in recreational and other daily activities. * Improved independence with daily living activities. * Improved performance in the home, school, and community. * self-regulations. Affected individuals get the ability to understand and manage their behaviours and understand their feelings about things that happen around them. * Sensory systems modulation. The Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring System Living with diabetes requires constant vigilance over blood sugar levels. For decades, individuals with diabetes relied on periodic finger pricks to monitor glucose levels, but this method offered only snapshots of a dynamic condition. However, with the advent of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems like Dexcom, managing diabetes has entered a new era of convenience and precision. The Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring system is a game-changer for people with diabetes, offering real-time insights into glucose levels without the need for multiple finger pricks throughout the day. The system consists of a small sensor that is inserted just beneath the skin, typically on the abdomen, and continuously measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid. This sensor communicates wirelessly with a receiver or compatible smart device, providing users with real-time glucose readings every few minutes. One of the key advantages of the Dexcom CGM system is its ability to track glucose trends over time. here is an early version of principles established by a client adopting LeSS Huge in a product group: 1. The perfection goal is to have a releasable product all the time. Release stabilization periods need to be reduced and eventually eliminated. 2. Co-located, self-managing, cross-functional, Scrum teams are the basic organizational building block. Responsibility and accountability are on team level. 3. The majority of the teams are organized as customer-centric feature teams. 4. Product management steers the development through the Product Owner role. Release commitments are not forced on teams. 5. The line organization is cross-functional. The functional-specialized line organizations are gradually integrated in the cross-functional line organization. 6. Special coordination roles (such as project managers) are avoided and teams are responsible for coordination. 7. The main responsibility of management is improvement—improve team’s learning, efficiency, and quality. The content of the work always comes from the Product Owner. 8. There is no branching in development. And product variation is not to be reflected in the version control system. 9. All tests are automated with the exception of (1) exploratory test, (2) usability test, and (3) tests that require physical movement. All people must learn test automation skills. 10. Adoption is gradual and evolutionary. These principles are considered in every decision.
Craig Larman (Large-Scale Scrum: More with LeSS)
There are really only a handful of core processes that make any organization function. Systemizing involves clearly identifying what those core processes are and integrating them into a fully functioning machine. You will have a human resource process, a marketing process, a sales process, an operating process, a customer-retention process, an accounting process, and so on. These must all work together in harmony, and the methods you use should be crystal clear to everyone at all levels of the organization. The first step is to agree as a leadership team on what these processes are and then to give them a name. This is your company’s Way of doing business. Once you all agree on your Way, you will simplify, apply technology to, document, and fine-tune these core processes. In doing so, you will realize tremendous efficiencies, eliminate mistakes, and make it easier for managers to manage and for you to increase your profitability.
Gino Wickman (Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business)
Fred Tingey, a colleague, once observed that incremental development can be disconcerting for teams and management who aren’t used to it because it front-loads the stress in a project. Projects with late integration start calmly but generally turn difficult towards the end as the team tries to pull the system together for the first time.

The privatization of public services and functions manifests the steady evolution of corporate power into a political form, into an integral, even dominant partner with the state. It marks the transformation of American politics and its political culture, from a system in which democratic practices and values were, if not defining, at least major contributory elements, to one where the remaining democratic elements of the state and its populist programs are being systematically dismantled.

And here is where we could see the emergence of new types of companies—“Auto-Tech.” These would either be vertically integrated or strategically allied companies, from vehicle manufacture, to fleet management, to ride hailing through their own platforms. They would be the master coordinators of multiple capabilities—manufacturing, data and supply chain management, machine learning, software and systems integration, and the delivery of high-quality “mobility as a service” to customers around the world. At this point, there is still no tipping point where the benefits of new technology and business models prove so overwhelming that they obliterate the oil-fueled personal car model that has reigned for so long.

What can explain this difference? On the surface, much appears to hinge on Richard’s programming feat, his software shim. Otherwise, his effort with Konqueror seems much like my struggles with Mozilla. Perhaps he was just a better programmer than me, and without his coding cleverness, there would be no story. That explanation is too simple. Richard made his shim only after determining he needed one last link in a chain of inspiration, intuition, reasoning, and estimation. His shim was a consequence of his overall plan. To show what I mean, here’s an accounting of what Richard did in his first couple of days at Apple. He began by quizzing us on the browser analysis we had done before his arrival, and after hearing it, he quickly discarded our effort with Mozilla as unlikely to bear fruit. By doing so, he demonstrated the self-confidence to skip any ingratiating display of deference to his new manager, a person who had years of experience in the technical field he was newly entering. Next, Richard resolved to produce a result on the shortest possible schedule. He downloaded an open source project that held genuine promise, the Konqueror code from KDE, a browser that might well serve as the basis for our long-term effort. In getting this code running on a Mac, he decided to make the closest possible approximation of a real browser that was feasible on his short schedule. He identified three features—loading web pages, clicking links, and going back to previous pages. He reasoned these alone would be sufficiently compelling proofs of concept. He then made his shortcuts, and these simplifying choices defined a set of nongoals: Perfect font rendering would be cast aside, as would full integration with the Mac’s native graphics system, same for using only the minimum source code from KDE. He reasoned that these shortcuts, while significant, would not substantially detract from the impact of seeing a browser surf web pages. He resolved to draw together these strands into a single demo that would show the potential of Konqueror. Then, finally, he worked through the technical details, which led him to develop his software shim, since that was the only thing standing between him and the realization of his plan. His thought process amplified his technical acumen. In contrast, Don and I were hoping Mozilla would pan out somehow. I was trying to get the open source behemoth to build on the Mac, with little thought beyond that. I had no comparable plan, goals, nongoals, tight schedule, or technical shortcuts.

Understanding the Importance of Pressure Relief Valves in Industrial Systems Pressure Relief valves (PRVs) play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of industrial systems across various sectors, from manufacturing plants to chemical processing facilities. These valves are essential components designed to control or limit the pressure within a system by releasing excess pressure when it exceeds a set limit. The importance of pressure relief valves cannot be overstated, as they protect both personnel and equipment from the dangers of over-pressurization. What Are Pressure Relief Valves? A pressure relief valve is a safety device that automatically releases pressure from a system to maintain safe operating levels. It is commonly used in pressurized vessels, pipelines, and tanks where the pressure may rise beyond the acceptable limit due to unexpected changes in the system's operation or external factors. When the pressure reaches a pre-determined value, the valve opens to release fluid or gas, thus reducing the pressure and preventing potential damage or catastrophic failures. The Safety Aspect: Preventing Equipment Damage and Catastrophic Failures One of the primary reasons for installing pressure relief valves in industrial systems is to prevent damage to critical equipment. Excessive pressure buildup can cause pipes, tanks, or pressure vessels to rupture, which could result in expensive repairs, production downtime, and in the worst-case scenario, hazardous accidents. In industries where flammable or toxic materials are used, over-pressurization could lead to explosions, chemical spills, or leaks, endangering both workers and the surrounding environment. For example, in the oil and gas industry, pipelines carrying crude oil or natural gas are constantly exposed to pressure variations. A pressure relief valve ensures that, even if the pressure suddenly rises, the system remains intact, minimizing the risk of pipeline rupture or explosion. Regulatory Compliance Pressure relief valves also help industrial systems comply with regulatory standards. Organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) enforce stringent rules on pressure management in industrial processes. These regulations mandate that systems incorporate pressure relief devices to ensure that operations are carried out safely and within regulated pressure limits. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to costly fines, operational halts, and legal liabilities. A properly installed and functioning pressure relief valve not only helps to avoid such consequences but also ensures that industrial operations are carried out without interruption. Protecting Personnel In addition to protecting equipment, pressure relief valves are essential for safeguarding personnel working in industrial settings. Over-pressurization can lead to dangerous situations, including the release of harmful substances or the failure of protective systems. By maintaining safe pressure levels, PRVs ensure that workers are not exposed to hazardous environments or conditions that could lead to injuries or fatalities. Furthermore, the presence of a pressure relief valve in a system helps to create a more predictable and stable working environment, which is crucial for ensuring worker safety and boosting operational efficiency. Conclusion Pressure relief valves are integral components in modern industrial systems. Their ability to maintain safe pressure levels by preventing over-pressurization makes them crucial for the protection of equipment, personnel, and the environment. These valves not only ensure the longevity of industrial systems by preventing catastrophic failures but also help organizations meet regulatory standards.

Eager to capitalize on fixing the construction industry, investors are seeking ways to apply AI/ML to the construction process. But Era 1 and Era 2 thinking comes back into play. The overreliance on administration and underinvestment in managing production makes return on investment related to AI/ML for construction a challenge. But adoption of the production-based perspective provides the framework for leveraging AI/ML, especially when integrated with operations science. In this case, operations science defines how the production system should behave and the implications of what will happen if the production system does not behave as it should. AI/ML can then be used to determine why it is not behaving or even predict what risks may make it not behave. Operations science also provides the basis for training the AI/ML.

Understanding the Importance of an Oil Temperature Indicator in Transformers Transformers are integral components of electrical distribution systems, stepping up or stepping down voltage levels to ensure the proper functioning of power grids and electrical equipment. However, like all electrical equipment, transformers are susceptible to overheating, which can lead to serious operational failures or even catastrophic damage. This is where an oil temperature indicator becomes a critical component in the maintenance and monitoring of transformer health. Transformers typically rely on oil for both insulation and cooling. The oil serves to insulate the internal electrical components, preventing electrical faults and providing a medium for heat dissipation. As transformers are subjected to high electrical loads, the oil absorbs the excess heat generated. If this heat isn’t managed properly, it can lead to an increase in the transformer’s operating temperature, which may degrade the oil's insulating properties, or worse, cause permanent damage to the transformer’s internal components. Hence, monitoring the oil temperature is vital for ensuring safe and reliable transformer operation. The Role of Oil Temperature Indicators An oil temperature indicator is a device used to measure the temperature of the insulating oil inside a transformer. By providing real-time readings, these indicators help operators monitor whether the transformer is operating within its safe temperature range. Most transformers are designed to operate within a specified temperature range, typically between 50°C to 85°C. Exceeding these temperatures can lead to the deterioration of the oil and the insulation materials, which could compromise the transformer’s performance and lifespan. At Precimeasure, we have three types of Temperature measurement products such as Dial type, Bimetallic, and Digital. Preventing Overheating Overheating in transformers is a leading cause of premature failure. Without proper monitoring, excessive temperature rise may go unnoticed, leading to severe damage. An oil temperature indicator allows operators to identify potential issues before they become critical. If the oil temperature begins to rise beyond acceptable limits, operators can take corrective action, such as reducing the transformer’s load, improving ventilation, or activating cooling systems. In some cases, continuous monitoring with automatic alarms can alert maintenance personnel to potential problems even before they are visible to the naked eye. Enhancing Transformer Lifespan Transformers are expensive, long-term investments. Therefore, preserving their lifespan is of utmost importance for both utility companies and industries. By monitoring the oil temperature, the risk of thermal aging is minimized. Continuous high temperatures can break down the oil’s chemical structure, reducing its dielectric strength and increasing the likelihood of transformer failure. Regular monitoring helps ensure that the transformer operates within safe thermal limits, thus extending its useful life and reducing the likelihood of costly repairs or replacements. At Precimeasure, we curate products that ensures the durability of transformers. Preventing Oil Breakdown Oil breakdown is a significant concern for transformers. When the temperature rises beyond recommended levels, it accelerates the breakdown of transformer oil, which can lead to a loss of its insulating and cooling properties. This breakdown can cause internal short circuits, fires, or even explosions in extreme cases. The oil temperature indicator serves as an early warning system, alerting personnel to potential overheating before it leads to such dangerous consequences. Conclusion An oil temperature indicator is not just a convenient tool but a crucial safeguard for transformer operation.

How do we make our systems reliable, in spite of unreliable humans? The best systems combine several approaches: Design systems in a way that minimizes opportunities for error. For example, well-designed abstractions, APIs, and admin interfaces make it easy to do “the right thing” and discourage “the wrong thing.” However, if the interfaces are too restrictive people will work around them, negating their benefit, so this is a tricky balance to get right. Decouple the places where people make the most mistakes from the places where they can cause failures. In particular, provide fully featured non-production sandbox environments where people can explore and experiment safely, using real data, without affecting real users. Test thoroughly at all levels, from unit tests to whole-system integration tests and manual tests [3]. Automated testing is widely used, well understood, and especially valuable for covering corner cases that rarely arise in normal operation. Allow quick and easy recovery from human errors, to minimize the impact in the case of a failure. For example, make it fast to roll back configuration changes, roll out new code gradually (so that any unexpected bugs affect only a small subset of users), and provide tools to recompute data (in case it turns out that the old computation was incorrect). Set up detailed and clear monitoring, such as performance metrics and error rates. In other engineering disciplines this is referred to as telemetry. (Once a rocket has left the ground, telemetry is essential for tracking what is happening, and for understanding failures [14].) Monitoring can show us early warning signals and allow us to check whether any assumptions or constraints are being violated. When a problem occurs, metrics can be invaluable in diagnosing the issue. Implement good management practices and training—a complex and important aspect, and beyond the scope of this book.

How Pressure Relief Devices Prevent Transformer Explosions? Transformers are essential components in the electrical grid, responsible for stepping up or stepping down voltage to ensure the efficient transmission of electricity. However, they also contain pressurized systems that can pose a risk of explosion if not properly managed. Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs) play a crucial role in preventing transformer explosions by managing the internal pressure that builds up during operation. At Precimeasure, we manufacture Pressure Relief Devices using Brass material that requires no external power. What Causes Pressure Buildup in Transformers? Transformers use insulating oil to cool and insulate the internal components, particularly the windings and core. Over time, this oil can absorb heat from the transformer’s operation. If the transformer experiences a fault, such as an electrical short or a sudden overload, the temperature inside can rise significantly. As the temperature increases, the oil begins to break down and release gases, causing pressure to build up within the transformer. In extreme cases, this pressure can become so great that the transformer’s casing may rupture or explode. Without a mechanism to relieve this pressure, a transformer can become a serious hazard, leading not only to equipment failure but also to fire hazards, environmental damage, and significant financial losses. This is where Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs) come into play. How Do Pressure Relief Devices Work? Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs) are designed to monitor and respond to changes in the internal pressure of transformers. There are different types of PRDs, including rupture disks, pressure relief valves, and spring-loaded relief valves. Each of these devices is engineered to release the built-up pressure at a predetermined level, thus preventing the transformer from reaching a point of catastrophic failure. Rupture Disks: This is a one-time-use device that consists of a thin membrane or disk that ruptures when the internal pressure exceeds a specific threshold. Once the disk bursts, the pressure is quickly relieved, preventing further damage to the transformer. Pressure Relief Valves: These are mechanical devices that open when the internal pressure exceeds a set point, allowing the transformer to vent the excess pressure in a controlled manner. Once the pressure returns to normal levels, the valve closes again, allowing the transformer to continue functioning without further intervention. Spring-loaded Relief Valves: Similar to pressure relief valves, these devices use a spring mechanism to maintain a seal under normal conditions. When pressure increases beyond a safe level, the spring compresses and allows the valve to open, venting the excess pressure. Preventing Explosions and Minimizing Risk PRDs are vital for preventing transformer explosions by ensuring that excessive pressure does not accumulate within the transformer tank. If left unchecked, this pressure could lead to the rupture of the transformer casing, causing a dangerous explosion. By venting the pressure in a controlled manner, PRDs help avoid such catastrophic events. Additionally, PRDs play a key role in minimizing other risks associated with transformer operation. For instance, by maintaining the transformer’s structural integrity, they reduce the likelihood of oil leaks, which could lead to fires or environmental contamination. This not only helps to keep the transformer safe but also protects the surrounding infrastructure and environment. Thus, Pressure Relief Devices are an indispensable part of transformer safety. By managing the pressure that naturally builds up within transformers, PRDs prevent explosions and other hazardous outcomes that could result from excessive pressure. Their ability to function reliably and efficiently ensures that transformers can operate safely, even under extreme conditions. In this way, PRDs contr

How Tap Position Indicators Help Ensure Transformer Safety and Efficiency? Transformers play a pivotal role in electrical power distribution by stepping up or stepping down voltage levels to facilitate efficient power transmission. To ensure they operate safely and efficiently, transformers are equipped with various mechanisms, one of the most crucial being the tap changer. A tap changer allows the transformer to adjust its voltage ratio in response to changing load conditions. Tap Position Indicators (TPIs) are integral to this process, ensuring that the transformer operates within the desired parameters while maintaining safety and efficiency. What are Tap Position Indicators? A Tap Position Indicator is a device used in transformers to display the current position of the tap changer. The tap changer typically has multiple positions, each corresponding to a specific voltage level. As electrical load conditions change, the tap changer adjusts the voltage to maintain the system's stability. TPIs provide a real-time visual or digital readout of which tap position is currently in use, allowing operators to monitor and manage voltage adjustments effectively. At Precimeasure, we manufacture Tap Position Indicators of models 2246, 2257, 2245T, 2264. This instrument indicates the tap position of ON LOAD tap changes employed in transformers with options of resistance input, 4-20 mA input or BCD input. The Role of TPIs in Transformer Safety Transformers, especially those operating in critical infrastructure, must be maintained within precise voltage tolerances. Overvoltage or undervoltage can damage sensitive equipment and lead to system failures. Tap Position Indicators play a crucial role in preventing such issues by helping operators identify if a transformer is operating at the correct tap setting for the load conditions. 1. Preventing Overloading: By continuously monitoring the tap changer's position, TPIs help prevent overloading of the transformer. If the transformer operates at the wrong tap setting, it can cause excessive current flow, leading to overheating or even catastrophic failure. The TPI ensures the transformer is always running at the optimal setting, based on load conditions, thus avoiding overloading. 2. Minimizing Damage from Incorrect Settings: Transformers are designed to handle specific ranges of voltage and current. If the voltage is too high or too low, it can damage the transformer’s insulation or other internal components. With TPIs, operators can visually confirm if the tap changer has shifted to an incorrect position, ensuring that the transformer stays within safe operational parameters. 3. Early Detection of Mechanical Failures: Sometimes, mechanical issues such as faulty tap changer operation can lead to incorrect tap positions. A TPI helps identify such problems early, allowing for preventive maintenance before more severe damage occurs. The Role of TPIs in Transformer Efficiency In addition to safety, TPIs also contribute to the efficiency of transformers. Efficient voltage regulation is essential for reducing energy losses and optimizing performance. 1. Optimizing Voltage Regulation: Transformers must maintain a consistent voltage level despite variations in load. TPIs allow operators to monitor the tap changer and adjust the settings as needed to keep the voltage stable. Proper voltage regulation ensures minimal energy loss, which translates to reduced operational costs and improved energy efficiency. 2. Enhancing Load Management: By providing real-time information about the tap changer’s position, TPIs help operators make informed decisions about load management. This can result in smoother operations and less frequent manual interventions, which increases the transformer’s overall lifespan. 3. Preventing Energy Losses: Operating a transformer at an incorrect tap setting can result in significant energy losses.
