But as experience shows, continual partying soon loses its zest, even if one goes so far as to cool expensive drinks "with snow" in summertime. By contrast, Virtue's own followers have no real trouble in satisfying their desires. They do so not by committing violence against others or living off others' labor, but by simply "holding off until they actually do desire" food or drink. Hunger is the best sauce, and it is free. Furthermore, Virtue appeals to Heracles' native idealism. What hedonists have ever accomplished any "fine work" (ergon kalon)? None, for no beautiful or divine deed is ever done "without me [Virtue] ." Therefore, wherever there are energetic, effective people, Virtue is present: she is a helper to craftsmen, a guard of the household, a partner in peacetime ponoi, an ally for the works (erga) of war, the best support of friendship. To choose Evil would be shameful and not even extremely pleasurable, while with Virtue one will lead the most varied and honorable life.

In fine, human character is moulded by a thousand subtle influences; by example and precept; by life and literature; by friends and neighbours; by the world we live in as well as by the spirits of our forefathers, whose legacy of good words and deeds we inherit. But great, unquestionably, though these influences are acknowledged to be, it is nevertheless equally clear that men must necassarily be the active agents of their own well-being and well-doing; and that, however much the wise and the good may owe to others, they themselves in the very nature of things be their own best helpers (p.31).

What Dr. Cuninggim says about giving is also applicable to teaching or to any helping role for that matter—doctor, nurse, social worker—where the helper presumes to know more of what is in the best interest of the recipients than the recipients know for themselves. I am not saying that the helper does not often, or even usually, know what is best. But if the situation is coercive, either overtly or covertly, then the potentiality for evil is there, just as Dr. Cuninggim says it is with giving. I have done enough foundation staff work to be certain in my own experience that the role of almoner is a corrupting one—for the almoner as well as for the recipient. The recently published Hospital Bill of Rights is an acknowledgment that hospital administrators are sharply aware of the potential evil in the caring role.

History has been written and interpreted almost exclusively by men. Every apostle, every great prophet and soothsayer and philosopher, from the dawn of recorded time and almost without exception, are all men. It is staggering and unjust, but there it is. Very few women have ever been accorded a place of real importance in religion. At best, we are the helpers and the nurturers. At worst, we are the temptresses and the root of sin. Is it so very hard to believe, then, that we should be excluded from the annals of spirituality for this most important role?

Unhealthy giving is characterized by the following:  Excessive need to be needed—in other words, feeling worthwhile only if needed by others.  Doing too much for another person in the process of helping him or her, thus preventing that person from taking responsibility and fully achieving all that is possible.  Focusing on the needs and reactions of others to the extent of losing sight of one’s own needs, perceptions, limitations, and feelings. On the other hand, healthy giving by those in helping roles is characterized by the following:  Supporting another person to be the best that he or she can be.  Recognizing and valuing one’s own needs, perceptions, limitations, and feeling.  Self-compassion.  Ability and willingness (of the helper) to ask for help.

That cobra-patting Thai monk once stayed several months at our monastery in Australia. We were building our main hall and had several other building projects waiting for approval at our local council’s offices. The mayor of the local council came for a visit to see what we were doing. The mayor was certainly the most influential man in the district. He had grown up in the area and was a successful farmer. He was also a neighbor. He came in a nice suit, befitting his position as mayor. The jacket was unbuttoned, revealing a very large, Australian-size stomach, which strained at the shirt buttons and bulged over the top of his best trousers. The Thai monk, who could speak no English, saw the mayor’s stomach. Before I could stop him, he went over to the mayor and started patting it. “Oh no!” I thought. “You can’t go patting a Lord Mayor on the stomach like that. Our building plans will never be approved now. We’re done! Our monastery is finished.” The more that Thai monk, with a gentle grin, patted and rubbed the mayor’s big stomach, the more the mayor began to smile and giggle. In a few seconds, the dignified mayor was gurgling like a baby. He obviously loved every minute of having his stomach rubbed and patted by this extraordinary Thai monk. All our building plans were approved. And the mayor became one of our best friends and helpers. The most essential part of caring is where we’re coming from.

Women are the best helpers for men.

You can make a traditional grilled cheese sandwich. With American cheese which is just vegetable oil with food coloring as well as the skim of milk. However, that’s just government milk with government oil to make governments grilled cheese sandwich so be the nation can afford to eat. Nothing wrong with that at all. It’s humbling to know the value of a dollar. Compare it to the sales at every single store. You find government cheese made by companies that have been around since the 1900s. There are many cheeses of the world. Every single country makes cheese. Some really good ones and some that smell like someone cut the cheese. The government cheese can be put on a hamburger, which isn’t made of ham at all. The cheese can be melted to broccoli or put in macaroni and cheese as a quick meal with vegetables if any kind basically that is just homemade some sort of helper, then. As to the box of the content we all know as to all have eaten in our lifetime says so in really big letters. In directions anyone can understand. The government cheese can be put in that as well. For it will taste really good, nonetheless. All hail the government cheese. It’s affordable as well as delicious if you don’t like other cheeses. It can be melted to be slopped on chili cheese dogs. At every bbq in every household across the world. So don’t make fun of government cheese for there is also government bread as well as government water as well as many other governments benefits you can enjoy.
