Pilgrims say that the subterranean galleries and halls under it contain a collection of books, the number of which, according to the accounts given, is too large to find room even in the British Museum.

They taught that men have two souls, of separate and quite different natures: the one perishable--the Astral Soul, or the inner, fluidic body--the other incorruptible and immortal--the Augoeides, or portion of the Divine Spirit; that the mortal or Astral Soul perishes at each gradual change at the threshold of every new sphere, becoming with every transmigration more purified. The astral man, intangible and invisible as he might be to our mortal, earthly senses, is still constituted of matter, though sublimated. Aristotle, notwithstanding that for political reasons of his own he maintained a prudent silence as to certain esoteric matters, expressed very clearly his opinion on the subject. It was his belief that human souls are emanations of God, that are finally re-absorbed into Divinity. Zeno, the founder of the Stoics, taught that there are "two eternal qualities throughout nature: the one active, or male; the other passive, or female: that the former is pure, subtile ether, or Divine Spirit; the other entirely inert in itself till united with the active principle. That the Divine Spirit acting upon matter produced fire, water, earth, and air; and that it is the sole efficient principle by which all nature is moved. The Stoics, like the Hindu sages, believed in the final absorption. St. Justin believed in the emanation of these souls from Divinity, and Tatian, the Assyrian, his disciple, declared that "man was as immortal as God himself." *

Intuition must be developed and the matter judged from the true philosophical basis, for if it is contrary to true general rules it is wrong. It has to be known from a deep and profound analysis by which we find out what is from egotism alone and what is not; if it is due to egotism, then it is not from the Spirit and is untrue. The power to know does not come from book-study nor from mere philosophy, but mostly from the actual practice of altruism in deed, word, and thought; for that practice purifies the covers of the soul and permits that light to shine down into the brain-mind. As the brain-mind is the receiver in the waking state, it has to be purified from sense-perception, and the truest way to do this is by combining philosophy with the highest outward and inward virtue.

In the Aitareya Brahmana, the breath (asu) of Brahma-Prajapati became alive, and from that breath he created the Asuras. Later on, after the war, the Asuras are called the enemies of the gods, hence—"A-suras," the initial "A" being a negative prefix—or "no-gods" -- the "gods" being referred to as "Suras." This then connects the Asuras and their "Hosts," enumerated further on, with the "Fallen Angels" of the Christian Churches, a hierarchy of spiritual Beings to be found in every Pantheon of ancient and even modern nations—from the Zoroastrian down to that of the Chinaman. They are the sons of the primeval Creative Breath at the beginning of every new Maha Kalpa, or Manvantara; in the same rank as the Angels who had remained "faithful." These were the allies of Soma (the parent of the Esoteric Wisdom) as against Brihaspati (representing ritualistic or ceremonial worship). Evidently they have been degraded in Space and Time into opposing powers or demons by the ceremonialists, on account of their rebellion against hypocrisy, sham-worship, and the dead-letter form.

Therefore we may safely maintain that whatever the astronomical meaning of this universally accepted legend, its human phase is based on real and historical events, disfigured into a theological dogma only to suit ecclesiastical purposes. As above so below. Sidereal phenomena, and the behaviour of the celestial bodies in the heavens, were taken as a model, and the plan was carried out below, on earth. Reconoce la ciencia moderna que las leyes superiores de la naturaleza asumen la forma de enunciado cuantitativo. Esto es quizás una más explícita afirmación de la doctrina pitagórica. Los números se consideran como la mejor representación de las leyes de armonía que regulan el Cosmos. Sabemos que la teoría atómica y las leyes de combinación están hoy, por decirlo así, arbitrariamente definidas por números. W. Archer Butler dice a este propósito: “El mundo es, en todas sus partes, una aritmética viva en su desarrollo y una verdadera geometría en su reposo”.

Dice Platón en el Theoetetus que “el alma no puede encarnar en cuerpo humano, si antes no ha contemplado la verdad o sea el conjunto de todo cuanto el alma veía cuando habitaba en la Divinidad, con desprecio de las cosas que decimos que son, y la mira puesta en lo que REALMENTE ES. Por lo tanto, sólo el nous, o espíritu del filósofo (o amante de la suprema verdad) está dotado de alas, porque con su elevada capacidad retiene estas cosas en su mente, y al contemplarlas diviniza, por decirlo así, a la misma Divinidad. Así comprenderemos por qué las más sublimes escenas de los Misterios eran siempre nocturnas. La vida del espíritu interno es la muerte de la naturaleza externa, y la noche del mundo físico es el día del espiritual. Por esto se adoraba a Dionisio, el sol nocturno, con preferencia a Helios, el sol diurno. Los Misterios simbolizaban la preexistente condición del espíritu y del alma, la caída de ésta en la vida terrena y en el Hades, las miserias de esta vida, la purificación del alma y su restitución a la divina bienaventuranza o reunión con el espíritu. Theón de Esmirna compara acertadamente la disciplina filosófica con los ritos místicos: A este propósito, dice que podemos considerar la filosofía como la iniciación en los verdaderos arcanos y la instrucción en los genuinos Misterios. La iniciación abarca cinco grados: 1º, la purificación previa; 2º, la admisión en los ritos secretos; 3º, la revelación epóptica; 4º, la investidura o entronización; 5º, en consecuencia de los anteriores, la amistad íntima, comunión con Dios y la felicidad dimanante de la comunicación con seres divinos...

Fue entonces cuando surgió la figura de Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), quien fundó en Nueva York la Theosophical Society en 1875, junto con Henry Steele Olcot (1832-1907). La Sociedad Teosófica se estableció en Adyar, junto a Madrás, e influyó en los intelectuales indios durante generaciones. Este movimiento filosófico-religioso de orientación sincrética, que llegó a ejercer influjo en todo Occidente, tenía como objetivo recuperar y fusionar postulados válidos de todas las religiones antiguas y modernas, pero se basaba sustancialmente en el hinduismo, cuyas nociones cosmológicas y psicológicas divulgó ampliamente, convirtiéndose en la base y el origen del movimiento contemporáneo denominado New Age. Sus propósitos eran la investigación y experimentación con el misticismo y las técnicas de meditación, así como la promoción de la hermandad universal. Incluía la idea occidental de evolución hacia un estado superior. Promovió el orgullo del hinduismo y frenó la actividad proselitista de los misioneros cristianos.

Soon after this, mediums, table turning, floating tambourines, ectoplasmic limbs, and a variety of other otherworldly phenomena became the focus of an international craze; the flood of disincarnate appearances led one investigator to speak of an “invasion of the spirit people.”7 Colorful characters like the Russian medium and mystic Helena Petrovna Blavatsky were involved, but also scientists and philosophers like William James, Oliver Lodge, William Crookes, and Frederick Myers. It is difficult for us today to realize that at the time, many of the most famous men and women in the world were involved in spiritualism, to one degree or another. No hay duda de que la Filosofía Oculta podría aprender mucho de la Ciencia Exacta moderna; pero ésta, por otro lado, podría progresar por la antigua sabiduría en más de un ramo, y principalmente en Cosmogonía. Podría aprender, por ejemplo, la significación mística, alquímica y trascendental de las muchas substancias imponderables que llenan los espacios interplanetarios, y que, compenetrando a los mundos, son la causa directa, en el extremo inferior, de la producción de los fenómenos naturales que se manifiestan por la llamada vibración.

El falso saber es desechado por el sabio y esparcido a los vientos por la buena ley. Su rueda gira para todos, así para el humilde como para el soberbio. La «Doctrina del Ojo» (10) es para la multitud; la «Doctrina del Corazón» es para los elegidos. Los primeros repiten con orgullo: «Ved, yo sé»; los segundos, aquellos que humildemente han recogido la cosecha, en voz baja dicen: «Así he oído yo».

El Dharma (17) del «Ojo» es la encarnación de lo externo y de lo no existente. El Dharma del «Corazón» es la encarnación de Bodhi; (18) lo Permanentemente y lo Sempiterno.

Refrena tu yo inferior mediante tu Yo divino. Refrena lo Divino por medio de lo Eterno.

El SENDERO es uno, discípulo; no obstante, a su término se divide en dos. Marcadas están sus etapas por cuatro y siete Portales. En uno de los extremos hay la bienaventuranza inmediata; en el otro, la bienaventuranza diferida. Una y otra son la recompensa del mérito; la elección está en tu mano.

We can understand, they say, the necessity for concealing from the herd such secrets as the Vril, or the rock-destroying force, discovered by J. W. Keely, of Philadelphia, but we cannot understand how any danger could arise from the revelation of such a purely philosophical doctrine, for instance, as the evolution of the Planetary Chains. The danger was that such doctrines as the Planetary Chain, or the seven Races, at once give a clue to the seven-fold nature of man, for each principle is correlated to a plane, a planet, and a race, and the human principles are, on every plane, correlated to seven-fold occult forces, those of the higher planes being of tremendous power. So that any septenary division at once gives a clue to tremendous occult powers, the abuse of which would cause incalculable evil to humanity; a clue which is, perhaps, no clue to the present generation—especially to Westerns, protected as they are by their very blindness and ignorant materialistic disbelief in the occult—but a clue which would, nevertheless, have been very real in the early centuries of the Christian era to people fully convinced of the reality of Occultism, and entering a cycle of degradation which made them rife for abuse of occult powers and sorcery of the worst description.

The maddening nightmare of a lunatic — Atheist; presenting before his fevered vision, a hideous, ceaseless procession of sparks of cosmic matter created by no one; self-appearing, self-existent, and self-developing; this Self no Self, for it is nothing and nobody; floating onward from nowhence, it is propelled by no Cause, for there is none, and it rushes nowhither. And this in a circle of Eternity blind, inert, and — CAUSELESS.

The disputants are battling about mere words. Call the phenomena force, energy, electricity or magnetism, will, or spirit-power, it will ever be the partial manifestation of the soul, whether disembodied or imprisoned for a while in its body--of a portion of that intelligent, omnipotent, and individual WILL, pervading all nature, and known, through the insufficiency of human language to express correctly psychological images, as--GOD.

But it is in the denial of the boundless and endless Entity, possessor of that invisible Will which we for lack of a better term call GOD, that lies the powerlessness of every materialistic science to explain the occult phenomena. It is in the rejection a priori of everything which might force them to cross the boundary of exact science and step into the domain of psychological, or, if we prefer, metaphysical physiology, that we find the secret cause of their discomfiture by the manifestations, and their absurd theories to account for them.

Paracelsus named it the sidereal light, taking the term from the Latin. He regarded the starry host (our earth included) as the condensed portions of the astral light which "fell down into generation and matter," but whose magnetic or spiritual emanations kept constantly a never-ceasing intercommunication between themselves and the parent-fount of all — the astral light.

When the arc attained a certain point which brought it parallel with the fixed line of our terrestrial plane, the man was furnished by nature with "coats of skin," and the Lord God "clothed them.

Every nation had its Mysteries and hierophants. Even the Jews had their Peter — Tanaïm or Rabbin, like Hillel, Akiba, and other famous kabalists, who alone could impart the awful knowledge contained in the Merkaba. In India, there was in ancient times one, and now there are several hierophants scattered about the country, attached to the principal pagodas, who are known as the Brahma-âtmas. In Thibet the chief hierophant is the Dalay, or Taley-Lama of Lha-ssa. Among Christian nations, the Catholics alone have preserved this "heathen" custom, in the person of their Pope, albeit they have sadly disfigured its majesty and the dignity of the sacred office.

According to the exoteric explanation the soma is a plant, but, at the same time it is an angel. It forcibly connects the inner, highest "spirit" of man, which spirit is an angel like the mystical soma, with his "irrational soul," or astral body, and thus united by the power of the magic drink, they soar together above physical nature, and participate during life in the beatitude and ineffable glories of Heaven.

Thus the Hindu soma is mystically, and in all respects the same that the Eucharistic supper is to the Christian.

the tradition of the thousands of ancient parchments saved when the Alexandrian library was destroyed; the thousands of Sanskrit works which disappeared in India in the reign of Akbar; the universal tradition in China and Japan that the true old texts with the commentaries, which alone make them comprehensible—amounting to many thousands of volumes—have long passed out of the reach of profane hands; the disappearance of the vast sacred and occult literature of Babylon; the loss of those keys which alone could solve the thousand riddles of the Egyptian hieroglyphics records; the tradition in India that the real secret commentaries which alone make the Veda intelligible, though no longer visible to profane eyes, still remain for the initiate, hidden in secret caves and crypts; and an identical belief among the Buddhists, with regard to their secret books.

Some of this literature deserves at least a brief note. Madame Helena P. Blavatsky believed in a hollow Earth, and so did Lewis Spence. She formed the Theosophical Society and he, the AMORC Rosicrucians in San Jose, California (as distinguished from all the other Rosicrucians.) These two groups have so heavily influenced modem occultism that no amount of scientific evidence, now, can ever dislodge the hollow Earth from the Belief System (B.S.) of millions of Seekers of Higher Wisdom.

Evita tanto la ignorancia como la ilusión. Aparta tu mirada de los engaños del mundo; desconfía de tus sentidos, que son engañosos. Pero dentro de tu cuerpo —el santuario de tus sentimientos— busca en lo Impersonal al "hombre eterno"; y, una vez encontrado, mira hacia tu interior: tú eres Buda.

El conocimiento superficial es despreciado por los sabios y dispersado al viento por la noble Ley. Su rueda gira para todos, los humildes y los arrogantes. La "Doctrina del Ojo" es para la multitud, la "Doctrina del Corazón" es para los elegidos. Los primeros proclaman con orgullo: "Mira, lo sé"; los últimos, aquellos que han cosechado en humildad, confiesan en voz baja: "Así lo he oído".

Tanto la acción como la inacción pueden coexistir en ti; tu cuerpo inquieto, tu mente serena, tu alma clara como un lago de montaña. ¿Aspiras a ser un yogui del "Círculo del Tiempo"?

¿Te abstendrás de actuar? De ese modo, tu alma no logrará su liberación. Para alcanzar el Nirvâna es necesario obtener el Autoconocimiento, y el Autoconocimiento se compone de actos amorosos. Ten paciencia, aspirante. Sé como aquel que no teme fracasar y que no busca el éxito. Dirige la mirada de tu alma hacia la estrella de la cual eres un rayo; la estrella resplandeciente que brilla en las oscuridades insondables del ser eterno, en los campos ilimitados de lo desconocido. Muestra la perseverancia de aquel que perdura eternamente. Tus sombras viven y se desvanecen; lo que está en ti vivirá siempre, lo que está en ti sabe, porque es conocimiento, no es de vida efímera: es el hombre que fue, que es y que será, para quien el tiempo nunca llegará. Si deseas cosechar la dulce paz y el descanso, discípulo, siembra con las semillas del mérito los campos de futuras cosechas. Acepta las penas del renacimiento. Pasar de la luz del sol a la sombra, para dejar más espacio a los demás. Las lágrimas que riegan la tierra árida del dolor y la pena, hacen brotar las flores y los frutos de la retribución kármica. Del horno de la vida del hombre y de su oscuro humo, surgen llamas aladas, llamas purificadas, que, elevándose hacia adelante —bajo el ojo kármico—, completan finalmente el tejido glorificado de las tres vestiduras del Camino.

Puedes crear en este "día" tus oportunidades para tu "mañana". En el "Gran Viaje", las causas sembradas cada hora cosechan cada una sus efectos, pues una justicia implacable rige el mundo. Con un poderoso influjo de acciones nunca erróneas, trae a los mortales vidas de bienestar o desgracia, la descendencia kármica de todos nuestros pensamientos y actos anteriores. Acepta, pues, todo lo que el mérito te proporcione, ¡oh, tú de corazón paciente! Mantén el ánimo y acéptate con tu destino. Ese es tu Karma, el Karma del ciclo de tus nacimientos; el destino de aquellos que, en su dolor y su alegría, nacen junto a ti, se regocijan y lloran de vida en vida, atados a tus acciones pasadas. Actúa para ellos "de día", y ellos actuarán para ti "de mañana". Del brote de la Renuncia del Ser emerge el dulce fruto de la Liberación final.

Sigue la rueda de la vida; sigue la rueda del deber hacia tu raza y las personas cercanas, hacia el amigo y el enemigo, y cierra tu mente tanto a los placeres como al dolor. Cumple con la ley de la retribución kármica. Logra Siddhis para tu próximo nacimiento. Si no puedes ser el Sol, entonces sé un humilde planeta. Sí, si no puedes brillar como el Sol del mediodía en la montaña nevada de la Pureza Eterna, entonces elige, ¡oh aprendiz!, un camino más modesto.

What is this something which thinks and even speaks but yet is not human; that is impalpable and yet not a disembodied spirit; that simulates affection, passion, remorse, fear, joy, but yet feels neither? What is this canting creature which rejoices in cheating the truthful inquirer and mocking at sacred human feeling?

Schopenhauer’s doctrine is that the universe is but the manifestation of the will.
