Children Are a Gift Behold, children are a gift of the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. —PSALM 127:3 NASB     In a recent women’s Bible study, the teacher asked the group, “Did you feel loved by your parents when you were a child?” Here are some of the responses. • “A lot of pizza came to the house on Friday nights when my parents went out for the evening.” • “I got in their way. I wasn’t important to them.” • “They were too busy for me.” • “Mom didn’t have to work, but she did just so she wouldn’t have to be home with us kids.” • “I spent too much time with a babysitter.” • “Mom was too involved at the country club to spend time with me.” • “Dad took us on trips, but he played golf all the time we were away.” So many of the ladies felt they were rejected by their parents in their childhoods. There was very little love in their homes. What would your children say in response to the same question? I’m sure we all would gain insight from our children’s answers. In today’s verse we see that children are a reward (gift) from the Lord. In Hebrew, “gift” means “property—a possession.” Truly, God has loaned us His property or possessions to care for and to enjoy for a certain period of time. My Bob loves to grow vegetables in his raised-bed garden each summer. I am amazed at what it takes to get a good crop. He cultivates the soil, sows seeds, waters, fertilizes, weeds, and prunes. Raising children takes a lot of time, care, nurturing, and cultivating as well. We can’t neglect these responsibilities if we are going to produce good fruit. Left to itself, the garden—and our children—will end up weeds. Bob always has a smile on his face when he brings a big basket full of corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans into the kitchen. As the harvest is Bob’s reward, so children are parents’ rewards. Let your home be a place where its members come to be rejuvenated after a very busy time away from it. We liked to call our home the “trauma center”—a place where we could make mistakes, but also where there was healing. Perfect people didn’t reside at our address. If we are sowing lots of thoughts about shoes, cars, clothes, computer games, shopping, guns, and very few thoughts about things of the Lord, we will not reap spiritual maturity, spiritual priorities, greater desire for the Lord, or a closer relationship with the Lord. We will reap vanity, shallowness, and even greater spiritual disinterest and distance from the Lord. If we struggle with being uninterested in the things of the Lord, we need to consider that this is something we have actually done to ourselves. If we sow a desire to charm, amuse, or impress our friends, we will not reap relationships based on a selfless, sacrificial, Christ-like interest in our friend's spiritual welfare. We will reap self-serving, exploitive relationships that can actually drag our friends down. This is a life and death matter: what you are sowing in every little conversation that you have. The Maya knew Venus well. It did not—as Immanuel Velikovsky suggested—emerge from Jupiter around 680 BC. And what did the Maya know about the asteroid belt? The Mayan people accomplished something completely impossible: living during one year with two calendars simultaneously. One of the Mayan calendars had 365 days, like our calendar. The second calendar had only 260 days. They called it Tzolkin. One week in this Tzolkin lasted 13 days. The whole year included 20 such weeks: 13 × 20 = 260. They called their other calendar Haab. It contained 18 months with 20 days each. 20 × 18 = 360, plus 5 additional days. But really, why should a people live with two calendars at the same time? A 260-day calendar was of no use in practice. It was not applicable to the seasons; to sowing and harvesting. Why have this confusion? For the Maya, the 260-day calendar was considered a “divine calendar.” All religious festivals were celebrated according to this calendar. It had been the gods who introduced the Tzolkin. Why was that? Presumably, they wanted to always remember the orbit of their original home planet. Had a celestial body ever orbited the Sun between Mars and Jupiter, this would have had to happen every 260 days? How do you arrive at that number?
