This short book is an attempt to explain from first principles how and why ChatGPT works. In some ways it’s a story about technology. But it’s also a story about science.

The first thing to explain is that what ChatGPT is always fundamentally trying to do is to produce a “reasonable continuation” of whatever text it’s got so far, where by “reasonable” we mean “what one might expect someone to write after seeing what people have written on billions of webpages, etc.” So

So what can we do? The big idea is to make a model that lets us estimate the probabilities with which sequences should occur—even though we’ve never explicitly seen those sequences in the corpus of text we’ve looked at. And at the core of ChatGPT is precisely a so-called “large language model” (LLM) that’s been built to do a good job of estimating those probabilities.

Después de todo el trabajito anterior, las neuronas artificiales fueron utilizadas para generar texto que respondiera preguntas y completara fragmentos de texto.

En la etapa de codificación, cuando un usuario realiza una pregunta o escribe un texto en el campo de entrada de ChatGPT, el modelo lo procesa y lo convierte en una representación numérica llamada vector. Este vector se utiliza para buscar patrones y relaciones en los datos de entrenamiento y, así, generar la respuesta.

Finalmente, en la etapa de decodificación, el modelo utiliza los patrones y relaciones encontrados para generar una respuesta coherente y bien estructurada en lenguaje natural.

Cada capa procesa la información en diferentes niveles de abstracción, lo que le permite al modelo comprender el lenguaje en diferentes niveles de complejidad.

Si quieres participar de manera activa en el entrenamiento de ChatGPT, puedes valorar con un «me gusta» o «no me gusta» cada una de las respuestas que te da el sistema o, dicho de otra forma, puedes retroalimentarlo indicando si las respuestas de ChatGPT son correctas o incorrectas.

También vale escribir en el chat que una determinada respuesta es incorrecta. Así ayudas a mejorar el rendimiento del modelo y, en consecuencia, a proporcionar una mejor experiencia para el usuario.

O sea, dada una oración, el robot estima cuál es la palabra que tiene que insertar. Yo diría que es parecido a si uno de nosotros estuviera en estado de embriaguez: podríamos conseguir hablar de forma coherente (incluso de manera gramaticalmente correcta y sin error algún), pero no sabemos o no somos conscientes de lo que decimos. ChatGPT no tiene consciencia, aunque la definición de consciencia esté vinculada con el lenguaje. Estamos delante de una limitación inherente, porque la máquina no tiene una comprensión del mundo, luego, puede generar respuestas imprecisas o que no sean veraces.

Dejo mi advertencia: el uso excesivo de chatbots y otras tecnologías de IA en la comunicación puede llevar a una pérdida del toque humano.

Recuerda que la comunicación humana es mucho más que transmitir información. Otro de los efectos que ChatGPT ha tenido en el mundo es en la forma en que nos comunicamos con las máquinas. El modelo de lenguaje natural funciona en tres etapas principales: entrenamiento, codificación y decodificación.

El proceso empieza con un aprendizaje que se denomina «no supervisado». Es un entrenamiento en que se alimenta al modelo con enormes cantidades de textos recopilados de Internet como libros, páginas web, artículos, blogs y otras bases de datos en varios idiomas. Las temáticas y los estilos de escritura que alimentan el modelo son extensos, diversos y variados. El modelo aprende a reconocer patrones y estructuras del lenguaje, lo que le permite generar respuestas coherentes y precisas.

Intento explicarlo de una manera más sencilla: los ingenieros pasan a la máquina todos aquellos textos y, luego, la máquina va cogiendo frases y de cada frase elige alguna palabra e intenta adivinarla. En otras palabras, la red neuronal del modelo se entrenó para predecir la siguiente palabra en una secuencia de texto, basándose en las palabras previas.

En caso de que consiga construir una frase correcta gramaticalmente, entonces la maquina aprende que la palabra que escogió es correcta. Si la palabra no encaja en la oración, la máquina también aprende lo que es incorrecto.

Pero ¿cómo es posible que ChatGPT sea capaz de responder preguntas tan variadas y complejas, en cualquier idioma y tan rápido? La respuesta está en la estructura del Transformer que comenté al inicio del capítulo. La arquitectura de esta red neuronal se compone de múltiples capas de procesamiento.

Por fin, déjame resaltar que, tal y como está ahora el modelo GPT-3.5, sus bases de datos están actualizadas hasta junio de 2021 (o hasta septiembre de 2021 si usas GPT-4), lo que significa que cualquier pregunta que le hagas sobre sucesos ocurridos posteriores a ese momento, no lo sabrá responder. Sin embargo, esto ya tiene una solución que te explicaré más adelante.
