Too common is the experience of a college professor answering a knock on her office door only to find a first-year student in distress, asking to discuss his low grade on the first test in introductory psychology. How is it possible? He attended all the lectures and took diligent notes on them. He read the text and highlighted the critical passages. How did he study for the test? she asks. Well, he’d gone back and highlighted his notes, and then reviewed the highlighted notes and his highlighted text material several times until he felt he was thoroughly familiar with all of it. How could it be that he had pulled a D on the exam? Had he used the set of key concepts in the back of each chapter to test himself? Could he look at a concept like “conditioned stimulus,” define it, and use it in a paragraph? While he was reading, had he thought of converting the main points of the text into a series of questions and then later tried to answer them while he was studying? Had he at least rephrased the main ideas in his own words as he read? Had he tried to relate them to what he already knew? Had he looked for examples outside the text? The answer was no in every case. He sees himself as the model student, diligent to a fault, but the truth is he doesn’t know how to study effectively.

When each hand has become fairly competent at playing its part, try playing slowly with hands together. SLOWLY! There are errors that will only appear once you try to play two-handed. Just as slow practice helps us overcome difficulties in each hand, it will fix these two-handed problems as well. This point, hands separately then together, and the next regarding slow practice are "sure cures for what ails you." 3. Practice slowly at first to gain accuracy, and then speed up a little at a time. This is another point of obvious common sense which most students don't heed. Since we can hear the music in our minds at full speed, our impatience leads us to repeat a section of music over and over and over at this speed with little improvement. Simply slow it down, whether playing hands separately or both together, learn to play well at that speed, and then increase the speed GRADUALLY while you maintain complete accuracy. Curb your impatience and make the hands slow down so that the mistakes disappear.

My classmates and I would get higher scores—two hundred points, as promised—than poorer students, who might be equivalent in intellectual strength but did not have the resources or, in some cases, even the awareness to acquire better form through high-priced prep courses. Because of the way the human mind works—the so-called “attribution effect,” which drives us to take personal credit for any success—those of us who prepped for the test would score higher and then walk into better opportunities thinking it was all about us: that we were better and smarter than the rest and we even had inarguable, quantifiable proof. Look at our scores! Admissions counselors and professors would assume we were better qualified and admit us to their graduate schools (while also boosting their institutional rankings). And because we’re talking about featureless, objective numbers, no one would ever think that racism could have played a role.
