What an irreconcilable environment his own great Mother Russia had become as far as art was concerned. Of course the hack writers, daubers, and ass lickers prosper nowadays. After the regime’s big shots they’re the group that now get the fat grants and fees. But how many real authentic artists are left? All the really great ones have been killed by the Communists or have committed suicide. His thoughts ran over a number of personages and names: Gorki, Mayakovsky, Esenin, Babel, Pilniak, Gumilev, Mandelstam; others, some totally unknown whose lives he’d seen extinguished in the prison camp, unable to resist the harsh life there. And what a pile of hypocrisy, if you thought about it, the versions invented around those deaths (the deaths of important people, of course people known abroad, not the secondary characters). Hypocrisies like the Communists’ killing of Gorki and then the naming of a city after him.
