All I’d wanted was my very own Factory Reset, where I could completely unpack myself and select only the best and easiest parts of my personality to put back in. The parts people liked. I look at the watch that has lived reliably on my left wrist for so long that the anatomy of my arm underneath has started to make room for it. The groove in my wrist is proof that I’m a complete stranger to change. The Factory Reset never stood a chance.

I’m sentimental about things that hardly matter, and I hold on to them longer than I’m meant to. Sometimes I wonder if I feel more emotional about inanimate objects than I do people.

I didn’t consider until right now that maybe my shoes stink. Maybe it’s an odor only others can smell, like the way the air in my house smells. I don’t smell it at all because it’s my house. Not a bad scent, but not a particularly good scent either. It is neither bad nor good, it only exists. And yet my nose still can’t smell it because my nose lives in my house with the scent I can’t smell. Nose blind? Is that what it’s called? I wonder if that’s a nose thing or a brain thing. Maybe I need a vacation from my shoes. Maybe Marley can smell my shoes. Maybe I should finally let my mom buy me new shoes. My mom will make me throw my old shoes away. Maybe I should try washing these shoes first? …Why am I so focused on my shoes?
