ધીરુભાઈને આયાત-નિકાસમાં ભારે રસ પડવા લાગ્યો. તેમાં ક્યારેક હાથ પણ અજમાવી લેતા. સાથોસાથ તેમણે આયાત-નિકાસના નિયમો જાણી લેવા માટે ધ રેડ બૂક તરીકે ઓળખાતી. આવા નિયમોની પુસ્તિકાનો બરાબર અભ્યાસ પણ કરી લીધો હતો. ટ્રેડિંગ વિશે તેઓ ભણ્યા નહોતા, પણ તેનો અભાવ તેમણે આ રીતે દરેક નિયમની આગળપાછળની અસરો જાણીને પૂરો કરી દીધો હતો. પ્રૅક્ટિકલ અનુભવ મેળવવા માટે તેઓ લંચ સમયમાં એડનની બજારોમાં પહોંચી જતા. બજારમાં ચૂપચાપ એક બાજુ ખૂણામાં ઊભા રહેતા, ખરીદનારા અને વેચનારા વચ્ચે થતા વહેવારો જોતા, તેમને સોદાબાજી કરતા સાંભળતા અને તેમાંથી વેપારના અમૂલ્ય પાઠ શીખી લેતા હતા.

ધીરુભાઈનો આત્મવિશ્વાસ અને જાત પર અતૂટ ભરોસો. પોતે જોયેલાં સપનાંઓ પર તેમને એટલો અતૂટ વિશ્વાસ અને એટલા જોશ અને ઉત્સાહ હતા કે ટીકાકારને પણ તેઓ પોતાના ચાહક બનાવી શકતા હતા.

ધીરુભાઈ પોતાના કર્મચારીઓમાં આજીવન વફાદારીની ભાવના પેદા કરી શકાતા હતા. તેના કારણે લલચામણી ઑફરો બહારથી મળતી હોવા છતાં ક્યારેય તેમને છોડી જતા નહીં. લોકો કંઈ માત્ર ઊંચા પગારોને કારણે ધીરુભાઈને વફાદાર નહોતા રહેતા. તો પછી એવું કયું ચુંબકીય જાદુ હતું જેના કારણે વર્ષો સુધી ધીરુભાઈની ટીમ અકબંધ રહી હતી? ધીરુભાઈની બાબતમાં હંમેશ બન્યું છે તેમ આનો જવાબ પણ તદ્દન સહેલો છે. વિશ્વાસ. ભાગ્યે જ કોઈ મૂકે એટલો ભરોસો ધીરુભાઈ પોતાના માણસો પર મૂકતા હતા.

When I graduated from engineering college in 1971, T.A. Pai of Manipal suggested to Tata that I should join as a management trainee in a new company in Bombay that a friend of his had launched. When Tata asked me, I politely declined the offer because I desired to be based not too far from the jungles I loved. In hindsight, often wonder where my career would have taken me had I accepted Pai's offer: the aforementioned friend was the entrepreneur Dhirubhai Ambani who was just beginning his meteoric rise, perhaps with some help from Pai.
