Some of the old goddess tales were twisted to suit the takeover of male powers, in order to win converts to their new gods. For example, Pandora (All-Gifts) was originally a Great Mother Goddess, whose box (womb, cauldron, cave, cup) was a reservoir of beauty and life-sustaining gifts. Patriarchal myth tells us that Her box contained all manner of destructive demons, which once unleashed upon the world, brought evil and suffering to all. Eve was also a Mother Goddess, whose tree was the Tree of Life. The serpent was her own sensual wisdom, and the apple was her sacred fruit. Athene, whom we are told was born fully grown out of the head of Zeus, dressed in armor and ready for war, was originally the daughter of the matriarchal goddess Metis. (Meter, method, measure, matter, mother…) Both mother and daughter were worshipped by the Amazons at Lake Triton, and were born parthenogenetically—without sperm. The examples of mythic misogyny are endless. Medusa is another; the patriarchs would have us believe that one look upon her face would turn the viewer to stone, because they did not wish us to know her true nature. One source reveals that the Medusae were a tribe of Amazon women; another that their snaky-haired masks were used over temple doorways to protect the Mysteries from irreverent intruders. Whenever we hear about a serpent in myth or fairy-tale, we can usually be sure that it hails back to an ancient Goddess and Her powers. The result — a dark comedy with the can-puppets-really-do-that raunchiness of “Avenue Q” and can-people-really-say-that outrageousness of “The Book of Mormon” — is “Hand to God,” a new play that is among the more improbable entrants in the packed competition for Broadway audiences over the next few weeks. Given the irreverence of some of the material — at one point stuffed animals are mutilated in ways that replicate the torments of Catholic martyrs — it is perhaps not a surprise to discover that the play’s author, Robert Askins, was nicknamed “Dirty Rob” as an undergraduate at Baylor, a Baptist-affiliated university where the sexual explicitness and violence of his early scripts raised eyebrows. But Mr. Askins had also been a lone male soloist in the children’s choir at St. John Lutheran of Cypress, Tex. — a child who discovered early that singing was a way to make the stern church ladies smile. In kundalini awakenings, the completion state is not one of a single energy chain streaming from the genitals through the top of the head or into the brain, but of all energies merging and becoming one, and both flowing downwards, entangled, into the space of the heart. This is a state of being constantly at odds with each other within and without, between two forces— male and female, void and non-void, extension and contraction, fullness, and absence. E molto significativo che i demoni che abitano il sesto cielo godano di un’estasi suprema controllando e sfruttando gli altri. Ovviamente sono proprio il controllo e lo sfruttamento degli altri che stanno alla base della loro estasi. Non dobbiamo comunque lasciarci sviare dall’esposizione antropomorfica di questo concetto, perché il punto fondamentale è che esiste un male intrinseco in qualunque tipo di desiderio. Nella nostra vita, la felicità che otteniamo dall’affermazione del nostro controllo sulla natura e sulle altre persone ha una certa caratteristica diabolica. C’è un demone in tutti i desideri, ma la massima manifestazione di questa essenza del male nella vita umana è il nostro bisogno di controllare e di dominare gli altri.

Il carattere essenziale del Demone del sesto cielo è quello di privare della vita gli altri esseri. Esso distrugge la vita, prosciuga le energie degli altri per sopravvivere e spinge gli esseri viventi nei tormenti dell’Inferno. Questa è l’essenza del male. Davanti a fenomeni come il desiderio di autorità, di dominio o di possesso, il buddismo penetra nelle profondità più intime dell’esistenza umana per scoprire la vera forma del Demone del sesto cielo, che si manifesta in questi vari tipi di desideri. Nel Gosho Curare la malattia, Nichiren dice: “La natura fondamentale oscurata si manifesta come il Demone del sesto cielo.” Ciò in realtà significa che il demone del desiderio è intrinseco alla vita stessa. Io credo che la “natura fondamentale oscurata” sia l’egoismo che risiede all’interno del Sé. Potremmo chiamarlo il demone della vita. Questo demone della vita, che si manifesta come demone del desiderio, prende il controllo del Sé e lo costringe ad agire esclusivamente a proprio vantaggio. Il Sé, a meno che non si liberi di questa natura oscurata, si manifesta con modalità egocentriche. Se questa natura oscurata acquista forza, anche il Sé intelligente e consapevole dei mondi di Umanità e di Cielo si può trasformare in un essere egocentrico e arrogante.
