All of us need validation -- that who we are, what we think, and how we feel does make sense. And the deepest form of listening is empathy, by which we are able to resonate on a soul level with the feelings and needs of one another. Listening is a way of meaning-making. Theologian Nelle Morten refers to this dynamic as "hearing each other into speech." Ultimately, the development of authentic voice is a process that involves that involves a flow between speaking and listening. In listening, one becomes attuned to the surroundings so that speech becomes relevant and meaningful. This undulating rhythm of speaking and listening is the bedrock for dialogue in Imago Theory and for all of us who care about relationship.

What may not be apparent is that authenticity is not some abstract aspiration, no mere luxury for New Agers dabbling in self-improvement. Like attachment, it is a drive rooted in survival instincts. At its most concrete and pragmatic, it means simply this: knowing our gut feelings when they arise and honoring them. Their path is paved with deceit, and their hearts are hardened. They masquerade as angels, but their fruit is rotten to the core. Their sabotage stems from deep-seated insecurity, and their ego feeds on others' demise. Yet, in their darkness, they think they're enlightened. But God's light exposes their motives, and truth will set the captives free. Their destructive nature will ultimately consume them, revealing the true state of their heart.

Beliefs are created by suppressed core negativity, not the other way around, and it’s the core negativity that attracts negative experiences to you, not the beliefs per se. You can’t get rid of that core negativity by simply affirming and repeating to yourself that it does not exist. Such a misguided psychological principle has never been part of classic psychology, and has only come into vogue lately. Core negativity becomes known to us as feelings and emotions. As you release those trapped feelings, your “beliefs” change spontaneously, and so does your life experience, but you can’t touch that core negativity with efforts of the mind.
