One student asks: Why should I live?
Steven Pinker answers: In the very act of asking that question, you are seeking reasons for your convictions, and so you are committed to reason as the means to discover and justify what is important to you. And there are so many reasons to live! As a sentient being, you have the potential to flourish. You can refine your faculty of reason itself by learning and debating. You can seek explanations of the natural world through science, and insight into the human condition through the arts and humanities. You can make the most of your capacity for pleasure and satisfaction, which allowed your ancestors to thrive and thereby allowed you to exist. You can appreciate the beauty and richness of the natural and cultural world. As the heir to billions of years of life perpetuating itself, you can perpetuate life in turn. You have been endowed with a sense of sympathy—the ability to like, love, respect, help, and show kindness—and you can enjoy the gift of mutual benevolence with friends, family, and colleagues. And because reason tells you that none of this is particular to you, you have the responsibility to provide to others what you expect for yourself. You can foster the welfare of other sentient beings by enhancing life, health, knowledge, freedom, abundance, safety, beauty, and peace. History shows that when we sympathize with others and apply our ingenuity to improving the human condition, we can make progress in doing so, and you can help to continue that progress.

WHAT’S THE ONE thing that most affects how much people enjoy their jobs? First and foremost, people thrive when they feel appreciated by their supervisors and colleagues—and that means they sense the appreciation is heartfelt and authentic.

No one should have to pass someone else’s ideological purity test to be allowed to speak. University life—along with civic life—dies without the free exchange of ideas. In the face of intimidation, educators must speak up, not shut down. Ours is a position of unique responsibility: We teach people not what to think, but how to think. Realizing and accepting this has made me—an eminently replaceable, untenured, gay, mixed-race woman with PTSD—realize that no matter the precariousness of my situation, I have a responsibility to model the appreciation of difference and care of thought I try to foster in my students. If I, like so many colleagues nationwide, am afraid to say what I think, am I not complicit in the problem?83

Can I cuddle up with you when you sleep?”
Sma stopped, detached the creature from her shoulder with one hand and stared it in the face. “What?”
“Just for chumminess’ sake,” the little thing said, yawning wide and blinking. “I’m not being rude; it’s a good bonding procedure.”
Sma was aware of Skaffen-Amtiskaw glowing red just behind her. She brought the yellow and brown device closer to her face. “Listen, Xenophobe—”
“Xeny.”
“Xeny. You are a million-ton starship. A Torturer class Rapid Offensive Unit. Even—”
“But I’m demilitarized!”
“Even without your principle armament, I bet you could waste planets if you wanted to—”
“Aw, come on; any silly GCU can do that!”
“So what’s all this shit for?” She shook the furry little remote drone, quite hard. Its teeth chattered.
“It’s for a laugh!” it cried. “Sma, don’t you appreciate a joke?”
“I don’t know. Do you appreciate being drop-kicked back to the accommodation area?”
“Ooh! What’s your problem, lady? Have you got something against small furry animals, or what?” Look Ms. Sma, I know very well I’m a ship, and I do everything I’m asked to do—including taking you to this frankly rather fuzzily specified destination—and do it very efficiently, too. If there was the slightest sniff of any real action, and I had to start acting like a warship, this construct in your hands would go lifeless and limp immediately, and I’d battle as ferociously and decisively as I’ve been trained to. Meanwhile, like my human colleagues, I amuse myself harmlessly. If you really hate my current appearance, all right; I’ll change it; I’ll be an ordinary drone, or just a disembodied voice, or talk to you through Skaffen-Amtiskaw here, or through your personal terminal. The last thing I want is to offend a guest.”
Sma pursed her lips. She patted the thing on its head and sighed. “Fair enough.”
“I can keep this shape?”
“By all means.”
“Oh goody!” It squirmed with pleasure, then opened its big eyes wide and looked hopefully at her. “Cuddle?”
“Cuddle.” Sma cuddled it, patted its back.
She turned to see Skaffen-Amtiskaw lying dramatically on its back in midair, its aura field flashing the lurid orange that was used to signal Sick Drone in Extreme Distress.

…for only someone who has lived in a totalitarian state can appreciate the true character of paranoia. In 1937, when my father returned to Kiev from Luhansk, the whole country was bathed in a miasma of paranoia.
It seeped everywhere, into the most intimate crevices of people's lives: it soured the relationship between friends and colleagues, between teachers and students, between parents and children, husbands and wives. Enemies were everywhere. If you didn't like the way someone has sold you a piglet, or looked at your girlfriend, or asked for money you owned, or given you a low mark in an exam, a quick word to the NKVD would sort them out...

I recall a discussion with a highly-respected psychotherapist colleague and friend on the significance of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. My friend stated that the trouble with Romeo and Juliet was that they hadn't had adequate counseling. If they had had, they would not have committed suicide. Taken aback, I protested that I didn't think that was Shakespeare's point at all, and that Shakespeare, as well as the other classical writers who have created and molded the literature which speaks to us age after age, is in this drama picturing how sexual love can grasp a man and woman and hurl them into heights and depths—the simultaneous presence of which we call tragic.
But my friend insisted that tragedy was a negative state and we, with our scientific enlightenment, had superseded it—or at least ought to at the earliest possible moment. I argued with him, as I do here, that to see the tragic in merely negative terms is a profound misunderstanding. Far from being a negation of life and love, the tragic is an ennobling and deepening aspect of our experience of sexuality and love. An appreciation of the tragic not only can help us avoid some egregious oversimplifications in life, but it can specifically protect us against the danger that sex and love will be banalized also in psychotherapy.

Why do we trust men who have sought and attained high office by innumerable acts of vanity and self-will? When a work colleague makes a habit of insisting on his own competence and virtue, we may tolerate him, we may even admire his work, but his vanity is not an inducement to trust him. Why, then, do we trust the men who make careers of persuading us of their goodness and greatness, and who compete for our votes? Catherine Zuckert makes this point powerfully in an essay on Tom Sawyer. Tom, remember, is brave and clever and has a firm sense of the right thing to do, but he is animated mainly by a hunger for glory. He is, in short, the essence of an able politician. “People like Tom Sawyer serve others not for the sake of the others,” writes Zuckert. “They serve because they glory in receiving glory. . . . We should reward such people with the fame they so desire—if and when they perform real public services. But we should not trust them.”II I feel the force of that last sentence now: we go badly wrong when we trust them. Indeed much of the hand-wringing commentary about the loss of trust in government resulting from Vietnam and Watergate is simply, I now think, a failure to appreciate the simple truth that politicians should never have been trusted in the first place. They may be lauded when they’re right and venerated when they’re dead, but they should never be trusted.

One of Winston’s colleagues in the Ministry of Truth who is working on the dictionary explains the beauty of Newspeak: You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We’re destroying words—scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We’re cutting the language down to the bone.… It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.… Take good, for instance. If you have a word like good, what need is there for a word like bad? Ungood will do just as well.… You haven’t a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston. In the end, we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.… In fact, there will be no thought as we understand it now.

Xerox’s venture capital division wanted to be part of the second round of Apple financing during the summer of 1979. Jobs made an offer: “I will let you invest a million dollars in Apple if you will open the kimono at PARC.” Xerox accepted. It agreed to show Apple its new technology and in return got to buy 100,000 shares at about $10 each. By the time Apple went public a year later, Xerox’s $1 million worth of shares were worth $17.6 million. But Apple got the better end of the bargain. Jobs and his colleagues went to see Xerox PARC’s technology in December 1979 and, when Jobs realized he hadn’t been shown enough, got an even fuller demonstration a few days later. Larry Tesler was one of the Xerox scientists called upon to do the briefings, and he was thrilled to show off the work that his bosses back east had never seemed to appreciate. But the other briefer, Adele Goldberg, was appalled that her company seemed willing to give away its crown jewels. “It was incredibly stupid, completely nuts, and I fought to prevent giving Jobs much of anything,” she recalled.

For about 48 weeks of the year an asparagus plant is unrecognizable to anyone except an asparagus grower. Plenty of summer visitors to our garden have stood in the middle of the bed and asked, 'What is this stuff? It's beautiful!' We tell them its the asparagus patch, and they reply, 'No this, these feathery little trees.' An asparagus spear only looks like its picture for one day of its life, usually in April, give or take a month as you travel from the Mason-Dixon Line. The shoot emerges from the ground like a snub nose green snake headed for sunshine, rising so rapidly you can just about see it grow. If it doesn't get it's neck cut off at ground level as it emerges, it will keep growing. Each triangular scale on the spear rolls out into a branch until the snake becomes a four foot tree with delicate needles. Contrary to lore, fat spears are no more tender or mature than thin ones. Each shoot begins life with its own particular girth. In the hours after emergence, it lengthens but does not appreciably fatten. To step into another raging asparagus controversy, white spears are botanically no different from their green colleagues. White shoots have been deprived of sunlight by a heavy mulch pulled up over the plant's crown. European growers go to this trouble for consumers who prefer the stalks before they've had their first blush of photosynthesis. Most Americans prefer the more developed taste of green. Uncharacteristically, we're opting for the better nutritional deal here also. The same plant could produce white or green spears in alternate years, depending on how it is treated. If the spears are allowed to proceed beyond their first exploratory six inches, they'll green out and grow tall and feathery like the house plant known as asparagus fern, which is the next of kin. Older, healthier asparagus plants produce chunkier, more multiple shoots. Underneath lies an octopus-shaped affair of chubby roots called a crown that stores enough starch through the winter to arrange the phallic send-up when winter starts to break. The effect is rather sexy, if you're the type to see things that way. Europeans of the Renaissance swore by it as an aphrodisiac and the church banned it from nunneries.

Most of my colleagues who work with past life clients have listened to overlapping time chronologies from people living on Earth in two places at once. Occasionally, there are three or more parallel lives. Souls in almost any stage of development are capable of living multiple physical lives, but I really don't see much of this in my cases. Many people feel the idea of souls having the capacity to divide in the spirit world and then attaching to two or more human bodies is against all their preconceptions of a singular, individualized spirit. I confess that I too felt uncomfortable the first time a client told me about having parallel lives. I can understand why some people find the concept of soul duality perplexing, especially when faced with the further proposition that one soul may even be capable of living in different dimensions during the same relative time. What we must appreciate is, if our souls are all part of one great over-soul energy force which divides, or extends itself to create our souls, then why shouldn't the offspring of this intelligent soul energy have the same capacity to detach and then recombine?" In 1950, a thirty-year-old scientist named Rosalind Franklin arrived at King’s College London to study the shape of DNA. She and a graduate student named Raymond Gosling created crystals of DNA, which they bombarded with X-rays. The beams bounced off the crystals and struck photographic film, creating telltale lines, spots, and curves. Other scientists had tried to take pictures of DNA, but no one had created pictures as good as Franklin had. Looking at the pictures, she suspected that DNA was a spiral-shaped molecule—a helix. But Franklin was relentlessly methodical, refusing to indulge in flights of fancy before the hard work of collecting data was done. She kept taking pictures. Two other scientists, Francis Crick and James Watson, did not want to wait. Up in Cambridge, they were toying with metal rods and clamps, searching for plausible arrangements of DNA. Based on hasty notes Watson had written during a talk by Franklin, he and Crick put together a new model. Franklin and her colleagues from King’s paid a visit to Cambridge to inspect it, and she bluntly told Crick and Watson they had gotten the chemistry all wrong. Franklin went on working on her X-ray photographs and growing increasingly unhappy with King’s. The assistant lab chief, Maurice Wilkins, was under the impression that Franklin was hired to work directly for him. She would have none of it, bruising Wilkins’s ego and leaving him to grumble to Crick about “our dark lady.” Eventually a truce was struck, with Wilkins and Franklin working separately on DNA. But Wilkins was still Franklin’s boss, which meant that he got copies of her photographs. In January 1953, he showed one particularly telling image to Watson. Now Watson could immediately see in those images how DNA was shaped. He and Crick also got hold of a summary of Franklin’s unpublished research she wrote up for the Medical Research Council, which guided them further to their solution. Neither bothered to consult Franklin about using her hard-earned pictures. The Cambridge and King’s teams then negotiated a plan to publish a set of papers in Nature on April 25, 1953. Crick and Watson unveiled their model in a paper that grabbed most of the attention. Franklin and Gosling published their X-ray data in another paper, which seemed to readers to be a “me-too” effort. Franklin died of cancer five years later, while Crick, Watson, and Wilkins went on to share the Nobel prize in 1962. In his 1968 book, The Double Helix, Watson would cruelly caricature Franklin as a belligerent, badly dressed woman who couldn’t appreciate what was in her pictures. That bitter fallout is a shame, because these scientists had together discovered something of exceptional beauty. They had found a molecular structure that could make heredity possible.

Briar Patch women would face, lives were at risk, and the pursuit of justice would have to come first. She finished her drink and glanced at the clock. ‘God! Is that the time? I must get home. Thanks for the drink, and thanks for helping me, Spooks. I appreciate it. Now I have to go. Don’t forget to put your candle back in the window.’ CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE With a showman’s flourish, Rory burst into the office and deposited a pile of folders and reports on Nikki’s desk. ‘Results, Nikki! Incontrovertible. Listen to this. Millicent Cartwright’s dental records match those of Ellen McDonald from Dunedin, South Island. Same woman. And your nice new detective, Ben, is it, has a fairly recent photograph of her, sent by the New Zealand police. Same face as the cadaver in my mortuary.’ Rory took the coffee Joseph handed him. ‘Now, how she died.’ He paused. ‘In exactly the same manner as Louise Lawson. There’s a head injury, not enough to kill her, but enough to knock her out, and she had almost identical lacerations on her arms, wrists, neck and thighs. There is no doubt that she died from a massive loss of blood.’ ‘And as Millicent Cartwright is connected to the Hammond case and Louise to the Prospero case, we have our connection!’ Nikki felt a surge of elation. It was a single killer. ‘Ah, now hold on, dear Detective Inspector, the good professor has yet to finish.’ Nikki looked at Rory. ‘Go on, and don’t make it bad news, please.’ ‘Far from it. Listen to this. I was having a brief discussion with one of my colleagues who conducted the PM on your suicide case, George Ackroyd. We were just admiring the excellent job he did on crushing the hyoid bone in his throat, when I noticed something.’ He took a slow sip of coffee. ‘It’s fortuitous that I have such a good eye for colour because there it was, Midnight Orchid! On his left cheek! Just the tiniest dab, but I got a match!’ Nikki stared at him. ‘So Louise’s last visitor also kissed George?’ ‘Well, that brand of lipstick is not exactly rare. But it would seem so.’ ‘Then did he actually kill himself? Or was it made to look that way?’ ‘It was suicide, without a doubt. Everything about the crime scene indicates that he was alone when he died, and my findings discount any outside interference. It’s what, or who, drove him to it that you need to prove.’ ‘Avril Hammond.

To understand how you are percieved by others, ask:
1. What’s the general perception of me?
2. What could I do differently that would have the greatest impact on my success?
Depending on the person, you’ll hear responses ranging from eye-opening and helpful to vague and confusing. If the person is uncomfortable, they may rely on job- or project-specific feedback. In that case, clarify:
I appreciate that feedback. May I go up a level now and ask about the general perception of me as a leader/colleague/person?
Manage your reaction. Resist the temptation to explain yourself, defend your actions, or reveal disappointment. Your interviewees will be looking to see what effect their feedback has on you in real time. The quality of your feedback will only be as good as your ability to remain comfortable while receiving it. Ask for details or examples if you need them. And end with a sincere thank-you.

What people don’t easily put into practice is that the way to perform well in the maze is to collect as quickly as possible information about which squares beep. Logically, teams should applaud their colleagues for discovering both quiet squares and beeping squares. Both provide vital new information about the path. Instead, people experience the tiny intelligent failure of a new beep as a mistake and feel embarrassed by it—an embarrassment that’s amplified by others’ reactions. It shows lack of appreciation of context. A new beep is the right kind of wrong. Let’s call it a “beep going forward.” It’s a metaphor for the missteps in our lives in unfamiliar situations. Just as the maze presents a trial-and-failure task that cannot be solved without stepping on beeping squares, when we face novel contexts in our lives, we must be prepared for failures as we navigate the new terrain. If feeling ashamed of or anxious about a new beep in the maze is irrational (albeit human), so, too, is it irrational to feel embarrassed by the “beeps going forward” in our lives.

In addition to building goodwill, volunteering for unpopular tasks and offering feedback gave Meyer the chance to demonstrate his comedic gifts without leading colleagues to feel insecure. In one study, University of Minnesota researchers Eugene Kim and Theresa Glomb found that highly talented people tend to make others jealous, placing themselves at risk of being disliked, resented, ostracized, and undermined. But if these talented people are also givers, they no longer have a target on their backs. Instead, givers are appreciated for their contributions to the group.

When relationships are not nurtured by a sense of appreciation, the results are predictable: • Team members will experience a lack of connectedness with others and with the mission of the organization. • Workers will tend to become discouraged, feeling “There is always more to do and no one appreciates what I’m doing.” • Often employees will begin to complain about their work, their colleagues, and their supervisor. • Eventually, team members start to think seriously about leaving the organization and they begin to search for other employment.

The changes that occur during the prodromal phase have been broadly characterised by Hafner and colleagues (Hafner et al., 1995), though other more intensive studies are reviewed and summarised in Yung et al. (1996). These and other studies (Jones et al., 1993) showed that although diagnostic specificity and ultimately potentially effective treatment comes with the later onset of positive psychotic symptoms, most of the disabling consequences of the underlying disorder emerge and manifest well prior to this phase. In particular, deficits in social functioning occur predominantly during the prodromal phase and prior to treatment. Hafner et al.
(1995) demonstrated clearly that the main factor determining social outcome two years after first admission for schizophrenia is acquired social status during the prodromal phase of the disorder. The importance of this phase was previously poorly appreciated because no conceptual

Nothing about metabolism, however, is simple, and one last and important complication regarding efforts to walk off weight is a still poorly understood phenomenon known as metabolic compensation. Once again, studies of the Hadza play a role in how we understand this phenomenon. When Herman Pontzer and his colleagues measured daily energy expenditures in the Hadza, they were surprised to find that the highly active Hadza spend about the same total number of calories per day as sedentary industrialized people with the same lean body weight.44 In addition, when Pontzer and colleagues collected energetic data from adults in many countries including the United States, Ghana, Jamaica, and South Africa, they observed that more active people spent only slightly more calories per day than more sedentary people who weighed the same. In addition, individuals who were more physically active didn’t have total energy budgets as high as their exertions would predict.45 How could someone who spent five hundred extra calories a day exercising not have a total energy budget that is five hundred calories higher? The proposed explanation is that people’s total energy budgets are constrained: if I use five hundred extra calories walking, I’ll spend less energy on my resting metabolism to help pay for my exertions.46 This controversial idea (termed the constrained energy expenditure hypothesis) is still being tested, as is its relevance to weight loss. If correct, then contrary to many people’s expectations, exercisers might spend almost the same number of total calories per day as similar-sized but more sedentary individuals despite devoting more energy to being active. To appreciate the implications of this phenomenon, consider that the Hadza spend about 15 percent more of their total energy budget on activities like walking, digging, and carrying.47 In addition, as we will see later, exercise can stimulate repair and maintenance mechanisms that elevate people’s resting metabolic rates—an “afterburn”—for a few hours to as much as two days afterward.48 Yet if very active Hadza hunter-gatherers and exercising industrial people have total energy budgets that are about the same as similar-sized but physically inactive industrials, then they must spend less energy on other things like maintenance or reproduction. This may seem implausible, but we have already seen this phenomenon in people who lose a lot of weight, like the extreme dieters in the Minnesota Starvation Experiment whose resting metabolic rates plummeted.

The term “niche construction,” first used widely by biologist Richard Lewontin, the Alexander Agassiz Research Professor at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, represents the process by which an organism alters its own (or another species’) environment to help increase its chances of survival. A beaver building a dam and a spider spinning a web are examples of niche construction. So is a bird building its nest or a rabbit burrowing a hole. When animals migrate, they are seeking a favorable niche within which to flourish. Each of these activities assists the organism in achieving its basic needs—gathering food, protecting offspring, keeping clear of prey, seeking shelter from inclement weather—and thus raising the likelihood that it will pass its genes on to the next generation. Scientists are just beginning to appreciate that niche construction may be as important to evolution as natural selection. In the book Niche Construction: The Neglected Process in Evolution, Oxford lecturer F. John Odling-Smee and his colleagues write, “Niche construction should be regarded, after natural selection, as a second major participant in evolution. Rather than acting as an ‘enforcer’ of natural selection through the standard physically static elements of, for example, temperature, humidity, or salinity, because of the actions of organisms, the environment will be viewed here as changing and coevolving with the organisms on which it acts selectively.”17 What this can mean for neurodiverse individuals is that instead of always having to adapt to a static, fixed, or “normal” environment, it’s possible for them (and their caregivers) to alter the environment to match the needs of their own unique brains. In this way, they can be more of who they really are.

When our partners are able to articulate the ways that we are special and valuable to them, our interpersonal self-worth is supported. When we express the ways that we appreciate and are grateful for our partners, we create a culture of positivity in our relationships that allows mutual vulnerability, authenticity and joy to flourish. We can express the delight we have for our partners through our words, our actions, our touch, as well as just the look in our eyes. Diane Poole Heller and her colleagues use the term beam gleam (also known as the attachment gaze) to refer to the nonverbal expression of warmth, kindness and love that radiates from our eyes, letting our partners know that they are special to us.

I remembered John as far from robust—before joining the school, his fragile legs had required medical support. He also faced learning difficulties, which this typically unevolved 1970s boarding school failed to address. His Maidwell years would have been challenging anyway; but they were made hellish by the likes of Goffie. John was a sensitive and thoroughly decent boy who was tormented by this shameless, cowardly bully, in a school regime that had a hundred rules, but not one of them proved capable of protecting the most vulnerable in its ranks. What on earth would persuade Goffie—a man, powerful in physique and status—to pick on someone so fragile and defenseless? As his younger brother recalled in the eulogy that he gave at John’s funeral: At Maidwell John had a tough time, principally because he had dyslexia which was not diagnosed for several years, until age ten. Some bullying teachers accused him of not trying, or of being lazy, neither of which was true. Looking back, John always noted Mr. Goffe as the worst offender, a mean teacher who regularly hit his knuckles with a wooden ruler. These constant knockdowns in turn affected John’s self-confidence, and he became very shy. But John was always sweet and kind with other boys, never passing on the knocks that were handed out to him. Aged eleven, John was moved to a school specializing in dyslexia. But three years at Maidwell, being bullied by the likes of Goffie, had changed him. The self-assurance that he’d had as a young boy, before being sent away, was bled out of him. After school he lived the quietest of lives. In adulthood he had no romantic partner or close friends, preferring to sit at home by himself, watching television. His family background was immensely privileged, but he took humble jobs—helping in a pet store, then a home supplies warehouse—surprising colleagues at the latter by walking to work on a day when the roads were so clogged with snow that none of them, or any of their customers, made it in. John died from an intestinal disorder that he had ignored: His family believes that he had lost the instinct for self-care, had failed to get himself to a doctor, and this killed him. He was found dead after failing to turn up for work. I had not appreciated that the weight of suffering experienced by many of my contemporaries would be so virulent, and so hard to bear. When I read John’s eulogy, I cried with pity, and then rage.

Knowing this would be the last conversation this flight crew ever had. “Ah, roger that,” the controller responded. His voice cracked. “We got you on radar. Coast Guard is standing by for rescue and recovery.” There was a pause. “Godspeed, fourteen twenty-one.” “Coastal fourteen twenty-one, good day,” Kit said, the traditional sign-off sounding more like a goodbye.

identify those practices that best ground you in the present moment. Some of these might include: Music—Whether you dance to a hit song, find nostalgia in an old tune, or attend a concert, music cuts through the web of anxiety and takes you to the present moment, as long as you disengage from the “wandering mind” and actively listen. Exercise—A hike in nature, a stroll with your canine companion, yoga, sports, or other forms of exercise provide the right conditions for presence to thrive, particularly when you take time to appreciate the scenery, feel the breeze, and smell the air. Pay attention to your body and lungs as you walk, jog, swim, cycle, or lift weights. Creative arts—From painting and drawing to sculpting, writing poetry, and coloring, art powerfully disengages the default mode network to soothe an anxious mind. Cooking—Baking, grilling, or sauteing are effective ways to engage the senses and turn off your negative thought patterns. You cannot control the future, but by following a recipe, you can craft a delicious meal and provide satisfaction for yourself and your loved ones. Social connection—Calling an old friend, dining with loved ones, and connecting with colleagues over coffee will brighten your spirits and grant reprieve from anxiety. Countless other possibilities—Reading, gardening, watching the sunrise or sunset, and keeping a journal are just a few other ways to stay present in the moment. The key is to make a conscious effort to identify those activities that best anchor you in the now.

A couple of weeks after Mia’s bone graft surgery in January 2014, she received a letter from Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona on official United States congressional letterhead. Mia was so excited about the letter that she stood on the fireplace hearth (the living room stage) and proceeded to read it to the entire family. In the letter, Congressman Franks told Mia that he, too, was born with a cleft lip and palate and underwent many surgeries as a child. He told her he understood how she felt and told her not to get discouraged because he recognized how she is helping so many people. He invited her to Washington, DC, to receive an award from Congress for service to her community.
As soon as she had finished reading it to us, she exclaimed, “Can we go?”
Knowing how Jase puts little value on earthly awards and how he likes to travel even less, I responded with a phrase that most parents can understand and appreciate: “We’ll see.”
Mia immediately ran upstairs and tacked the letter to her bulletin board, full of hope and optimism. How could Jase say no to this?
Oh, she knew her daddy well. He couldn’t, and he didn’t.
That summer, Mia, Jase, Reed, Cole, and I spent a few days together visiting monuments and historical sites in Washington before meeting Congressman Franks on July 8 in his office on Capitol Hill. Mia’s favorite monument was the Lincoln Memorial because she had learned about it in school, so it was cool to see it “for real.” It was really crowded there, and people were taking pictures of us while we were trying to read about the monument and take photographs ourselves. Getting Jase out of there took a while because of so many fans wanting pictures--he’s very accommodating. That’s why it surprised me that this was Mia’s favorite site. I’m glad she remembers the impact of the monument and didn’t allow the circus of activity from the fans to put a damper on her experience.
Congressman Franks presented Mia with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for “outstanding and invaluable service to the community” at a press conference held at the foot of the Capitol steps. Both he and Mia made speeches that day to numerous cameras and reporters. Hearing my ten-year-old daughter speak about her condition and how she hopes people will look to God to help them get through their own problems was an unbelievably proud moment for me, Jase, and her brothers.
After the press conference, Congressman Franks took us into the House chamber where Congress was voting on a new bill. He took Mia down to the floor, introduced her to some of his colleagues, and let her push his voting button for him. When some of the other members of Congress saw this, they also asked her to push their voting buttons for them.
Of course, Mia wasn’t going to push any buttons without quizzing these representatives about what exactly she was voting for. She needed to know what was in the bill before she pushed the buttons. Once she realized she agreed with the bill and saw that some members were voting “no,” she commented, “That’s just rude.” Mia was thrilled with the experience and told us all how she helped make history. Little does she know just how much history she has made and continues to make.

What’s the ONE Thing I can do to eliminate my credit card debt... ? BIG IDEAS So how do you make The ONE Thing part of your daily routine? How do you make it strong enough to get extraordinary results at work and in the other areas of your life? Here’s a starter list drawn from our experience and our work with others. Understand and believe it. The first step is to understand the concept of the ONE Thing, then to believe that it can make a difference in your life. If you don’t understand and believe, you won’t take action. Use it. Ask yourself the Focusing Question. Start each day by asking, “What’s the ONE Thing I can do today for [whatever you want] such that by doing it everything else will be easier or even unnecessary?” When you do this, your direction will become clear. Your work will be more productive and your personal life more rewarding. Make it a habit. When you make asking the Focusing Question a habit, you fully engage its power to get the extraordinary results you want. It’s a difference maker. Research says this will take about 66 days. Whether it takes you a few weeks or a few months, stick with it until it becomes your routine. If you’re not serious about learning the Success Habit, you’re not serious about getting extraordinary results. Leverage reminders. Set up ways to remind yourself to use the Focusing Question. One of the best ways to do this is to put up a sign at work that says, “Until my ONE Thing is done—everything else is a distraction.” We designed the back cover of this book to be a trigger —set it on the corner of your desk so that it’s the first thing you see when you get to work. Use notes, screen savers, and calendar cues to keep making the connection between the Success Habit and the results you seek. Put up reminders like, “The ONE Thing = Extraordinary Results” or “The Success Habit Will Get Me to My Goal.” Recruit support. Research shows that those around you can influence you tremendously. Starting a success support group with some of your work colleagues can help inspire all of you to practice the Success Habit every day. Get your family involved. Share your ONE Thing. Get them on board. Use the Focusing Question around them to show them how the Success Habit can make a difference in their school work, their personal achievements, or any other part of their lives.

In Walked Jim September 2013: Entering his first morning staff meeting as FBI director, Jim Comey loped to the head of the table, put down his briefing books, and lowered his six-foot-eight-inch, shirtsleeved self into a huge leather chair. He leaned the chair so far back on its hind legs that he lay practically flat, testing gravity. Then he sat up, stretched like a big cat, pushed the briefing books to the side, and said, as if he were talking to a friend, I don’t want to talk about these today. I’d rather talk about some other things first. He talked about how effective leaders immediately make their expectations clear and proceeded to do just that for us. Said he would expect us to love our jobs, expect us to take care of ourselves … I remember less of what he said than the easygoing way he spoke and the absolute clarity of his day-one priority: building relationships with each member of his senior team. Comey continually reminded the FBI leadership that strong relationships with one another were critical to the institution’s functioning. One day, after we reviewed the briefing books, he said, Okay, now I want to go around the room, and I want you all to say one thing about yourselves that no one else here knows about you. One hard-ass from the criminal division stunned the room to silence when he said, My wife and I, we really love Disney characters, and all our vacation time we spend in the Magic Kingdom. Another guy, formerly a member of the hostage-rescue team, who carefully tended his persona as a dead-eyed meathead—I thought his aesthetic tastes ran the gamut from YouTube videos of snipers in Afghanistan to YouTube videos of Bigfoot sightings—turned out to be an art lover. I really like the old masters, he said, but my favorite is abstract expressionism. This hokey parlor game had the effect Comey intended. It gave people an opportunity to be interesting and funny with colleagues in a way that most had rarely been before. Years later, I remember it like yesterday. That was Jim’s effect on almost everyone he worked with. I observed how he treated people. Tell me your story, he would say, then listen as if there were only the two of you in the whole world. You were, of course, being carefully assessed at the same time that you were being appreciated and accepted. He once told me that people’s responses to that opening helped him gauge their ability to communicate. Over the next few years I would sit in on hundreds of meetings with him. All kinds of individuals and organizations would come to Comey with their issues. No matter how hostile they were when they walked in the door, they would always walk out on a cloud of Comey goodness. Sometimes, after the door had closed, he would look at me and say, That was a mess. Jim has the same judgmental impulse that everyone has. He is complicated, with many different sides, and he is so good at showing his best side—which is better than most people’s—that his bad side, which is not as bad as most people’s, can seem more shocking on the rare moments when it flashes to the surface.

But not all secure people are homebodies or goofy. You are not settling by going secure! Secures come in all shapes and forms. Many are good-looking and sexy. The mindset assessment asks questions that measure characteristics such as awareness, helpfulness, accountability, alignment, collaboration, self-correction, coordination, inclusivity, generosity, transparency, results focus, openness, appreciation, recognition, empowerment, initiative, engagement, and safety. Looking at these various elements and averaging results across industries, we have found that people rate their colleagues in their organizations at an average of 4.8 on the continuum and themselves at 6.8, which is to say that individuals rate themselves as 40 percent better than the rest of the people in their organizations across these characteristics.

EXPERT CRYPTO RECOVERY FOR INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES —>DIGITAL HACK RECOVERY
As a lifelong Manchester United fan, I’ve always appreciated the thrill of sports betting, especially when it involves backing my team. Like many fans, I enjoy the rush of predicting the outcome of a match, and I’ve had my fair share of wins. Recently, I took a risk by betting on a few of United’s key fixtures, and to my surprise, I ended up winning a substantial sum. With my winnings, I decided to make a more significant investment, hoping to turn my luck into even greater financial rewards. Unfortunately, that decision led me down a path I never anticipated.I came across an online platform through a broker on LinkedIn, who promised lucrative returns on digital asset investments. Initially, everything seemed legitimate, and I felt confident in my decision, using the money I’d won from my bets as my starting capital. The broker seemed professional, and the platform itself appeared well-designed. After depositing my funds, the early stages of my investment went smoothly, and I was optimistic about the potential growth of my assets. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when I tried to withdraw my funds. The platform began requesting additional "settlement" payments before I could access my earnings. These demands grew increasingly unreasonable, and the customer support team, which had initially seemed responsive, became unhelpful and evasive. Despite repeated efforts to resolve the issue, I was given the runaround, and my funds remained locked. It was at this point that I began to realize I had fallen victim to a scam. I was frustrated and worried that my winnings, which I had worked hard for and was so excited to grow, had been taken from me. As a Manchester United fan, I know how to appreciate a hard-fought victory, but this felt like the exact opposite – a gut punch, similar to one of those dreadful last-minute goals we’ve all endured as fans.A colleague of mine, sensing my frustration, suggested I reach out to Digital Hack Recovery, having heard about their successful track record in asset recovery. Initially, I was skeptical, but given my desperate situation, I decided to give it a try. From the moment I contacted them, I felt reassured by the professionalism and transparency of their team. Verified Wise accounts offer numerous advantages, including increased transaction limits, enhanced security features, and the ability to transact in multiple currencies with ease. These accounts are essential for individuals and businesses looking to manage their finances efficiently across borders. With a verified account, you can enjoy lower fees on international transactions, making it a cost-effective solution for frequent money transfers.
Why You Should Buy a Verified Wise Account in 2025
Moreover, verified accounts provide users with peace of mind, knowing that their financial activities are protected by advanced security protocols. These features not only safeguard your funds but also ensure that your personal information remains confidential. As a result, both personal users and businesses can focus on their financial goals without worrying about potential security breaches or transaction limits.
Key Benefits of Verified Wise Accounts
Account verification is a critical process that confirms your identity and ensures the security of your financial transactions. By verifying your account, Wise can protect your funds and personal information from fraudulent activities. This process typically involves providing identification documents and proof of address, which Wise uses to authenticate your identity.
Who Needs a Verified Wise Account?
Once your account is verified, you gain access to a range of features that are unavailable to unverified users. These include higher transaction limits, priority customer support, and the ability to transact in more exotic currencies. Understanding the importance of account verification can help you appreciate the value it adds to your financial management, making it a crucial step for anyone serious about secure and efficient international transactions.
Verified vs. Unverified Wise Accounts: What’s the Difference?
The first step in buying a verified Wise account is to find reputable sellers. Conduct thorough research to identify sellers with positive reviews and a track record of providing legitimate accounts. You can use online forums, review sites, and social media groups dedicated to digital financial services to gather information and recommendations. Be sure to check for any red flags, such as negative reviews or complaints about account legitimacy.
In addition to online resources, consider reaching out to your network for personal recommendations. Friends or colleagues who have purchased verified accounts can offer valuable insights and steer you toward trusted sellers. The key is to gather as much information as possible to make an informed decision, minimizing the risk of falling victim to scams.
How Verified Wise Accounts Help with International Transactions
Once you've identified potential sellers, verify their credentials. Check their business registration, customer testimonials, and any available certifications. It's crucial to ensure they have a legitimate history of selling verified accounts to avoid scams. Look for third-party reviews or endorsements that can vouch for the seller's credibility.

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for all the hard work that SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL have done in retrieving my XRP, TON, and BNB assets from the fraudulent investment platform I became involved with. I am based in Ontario, and I initially came across this platform through a broker agent on LinkedIn. At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. When I first contacted you a month ago, I wasn’t sure whether there was any hope of recovering my funds, and I certainly didn’t think it would be possible to get my XRP, TON, and BNB assets back so quickly. I was extremely skeptical at first, mainly because it was my first experience dealing with a situation like this. I had never heard of any service, let alone a firm, being able to trace and recover digital assets lost through fraudulent transactions. The whole concept seemed too good to be true. But from the moment I reached out to SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL then contact them on WhatsApp:+1 (971) 4 8 7 -3 5 3 8 I felt a sense of reassurance, though still doubtful about the outcome. The process of working with your team proved to be a game-changer for me. After my initial deposit into the platform, everything seemed fine. However, once I attempted to withdraw my funds, I was met with resistance. I was asked for various forms of "settlement" payments before they would release my assets. This was a clear red flag, and it only became more suspicious as I continued to interact with their so-called support desk and agent. Despite my repeated requests for assistance, I was given the runaround, and the withdrawal process never moved forward. It was becoming increasingly clear that I had fallen victim to a scam. A colleague at work suggested that I look into SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL as a potential solution to my problem. After reading some positive reviews and testimonials, I decided to give it a try, though still unsure of how effective it would be. I am so glad I did. Splitting tickets for group travel can sometimes feel confusing, but with the right steps, it becomes easy and stress-free. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or colleagues, understanding how to divide group bookings gives you flexibility, better planning, and the chance to customize travel needs. In this article, we’ll dive deep into everything you need to know about splitting tickets, answering key questions travelers often ask, and making sure you feel confident when preparing for your Lufthansa group trip.
1. Can I call Lufthansa to split tickets for large group bookings?
Yes, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 you can definitely call Lufthansa Airlines directly when you need to split group tickets. Many people assume group bookings must stay as one single reservation, but Lufthansa allows flexibility for travelers with different plans. Maybe half your group wants to return earlier, or others prefer extra days at the destination. By reaching out, you’ll find helpful agents who can divide your booking into smaller, manageable parts.
When splitting tickets, it’s important to know that fares may adjust based on changes in availability. Sometimes, the cost for the split portion could be slightly higher or lower. This happens because group fares are often negotiated at special rates. By calling ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335, you’ll get a clear explanation of the updated pricing before confirming.
Another benefit of splitting tickets is smoother management of travel details. Smaller bookings are easier to handle, whether for online check-in, seat selections, or upgrades. This especially helps if members of your group have unique needs like different baggage allowances or meal preferences. Calling ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 ensures that Lufthansa notes all adjustments and keeps each passenger’s experience personalized and convenient.
2. How much notice is needed before splitting Lufthansa group travel tickets?
The best time to call ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 for splitting Lufthansa group tickets is well before your scheduled departure date. The earlier you act, the better your chances of securing smooth changes without stress. Airlines generally recommend making such adjustments at least several weeks in advance. This way, there’s enough room for fare availability and seating arrangements to align with your group’s needs.
If you wait until the last minute, the process may become more complex. Flight classes may sell out, leaving fewer options for adjusting travel dates or seating. When you call ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335, Lufthansa representatives can guide you through what’s possible within your time frame. Acting early helps avoid unnecessary costs or limited availability.
It’s also worth noting that splitting tickets is not the same as canceling. Instead, it’s a restructuring of the booking to meet traveler preferences. Early notice makes it easier to maintain group discounts or other special fare agreements. Call ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 as soon as you know changes are needed to ensure a smoother transition.
Planning ahead also shows courtesy to your group members. They’ll appreciate having their travel confirmed early, with no surprises close to departure. Being proactive creates confidence, clarity, and excitement for the upcoming trip.
3. Will splitting Lufthansa tickets affect our group discount arrangements?
Yes, calling ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 to split tickets may sometimes influence group discounts depending on how fares were structured. Lufthansa often offers special pricing when you book as a large group. These fares are negotiated to provide value and consistency for everyone traveling together. Once the booking is divided, fare rules can shift, since not all travelers remain under the original group terms.
The good news is that Lufthansa aims to keep pricing

The realm of call girls in Lahore is secret. It runs behind closed doors, out of sight for the public. Some pretend it doesn't exist, others are intrigued about it. Notwithstanding differences of view, there is indisputable need for such services, so this subterranean sector is always growing.
In this article we shall investigate this covert world—how it runs, why people seek these services, the risks involved, and how it shapes society. We will also cover some of the most commonly asked questions concerning this controversial industry.
The Industry's Mechanism
Unlike in other Western countries with such companies under oversight, in Lahore everything happens silently. Everything moves through personal channels; public advertising does not exist. Usually, this operates as follows:
1. Websites and social media
Many customers reach out to call girls in Lahore using social media, WhatsApp groups, and personal websites. On Facebook, Instagram, and indirect advertising can push potential customers into private groups.
These services are also listed on several classified websites, although authorities usually shut them.
2. Hotel and Guesthouse Organization
Many gatherings convene in private residences, guesthouses, and hotels. While luxury hotels have rigorous rules, lesser hotels occasionally ignore them. Despite official denials, certain areas are recognized for letting such arrangements understatedly.
3. Word-of- mouth and personal relationships.
Reliable referrals help some people discover these services. Friends or colleagues may send customers to trade numbers or service providers. This approach is regarded to be safer as it lowers the possibility of frauds or police intervention.
4. Special Events and Luxurious Circles
Escort services are used in more wealthy social circles at VIP parties and special occasions. More than just physical contact, these sophisticated escorts occasionally act as social friends for official occasions, business meetings, and travel.
Why Do People Search for These Services?
People visit Lahore's call girls for several purposes. Among the most often occurring are some of:
1. Emotional Need and Loneliness
Not everyone seeks physical gratification. Some guys just want company—someone to chat to, eat dinner with, or spend time with to decompress from daily life.
2. Relationship Difficulties
Cultural and social constraints might hamper dating in Pakistan. Some men find it simpler to look for transient company than to handle ongoing emotional obligations.
3. Privacy and Conscience
This sector provides a means to avoid public relations for people who wish to keep things under wraps. Often seeking such services without risk of exposure are married men, corporate executives, and celebrities.
4. Adrenaline and Excitement
The mystery of this planet lends an exciting factor. It appeals more to some guys as some of them appreciate the danger involved.
5. Economic and Social Aspects
Hiring escorts is occasionally a prestige symbol for richer people. As part of their opulent way of life, they want upscale company.

☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 is the go-to way for travelers who want to simplify booking group or multi-passenger flights with Lufthansa Airlines. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or colleagues, Lufthansa offers flexible options that make booking for multiple passengers straightforward and stress-free. The airline combines modern digital tools with traditional convenience, giving travelers ways to lock in great fares, choose seating, and handle logistics in one smooth process. With a reputation for comfort and reliability, Lufthansa makes multi-passenger bookings feel seamless and stress-free. In this article, we’ll break down exactly how to book, plus answer common questions travelers ask.
1. How do I start booking a Lufthansa Airlines multi-passenger flight online?
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 makes starting a multi-passenger booking with Lufthansa simple. First, open the official Lufthansa booking platform, where you’ll find an easy-to-use interface tailored for travelers. On the homepage, select your flight type: roundtrip, one-way, or multi-city. Be sure to input the number of travelers before searching; this ensures the system automatically displays the correct fares for your group.
When booking for multiple passengers, Lufthansa’s system allows you to view all available flights, compare fares, and confirm seats in one transaction. This saves you from booking each ticket individually. Travelers can choose flight times that suit the entire group, add baggage allowances, and access in-flight service details.
Another highlight: Lufthansa provides real-time updates on seat availability, so you’ll know if a flight can accommodate your entire party. Once you’ve chosen, continue to the payment page where one transaction secures all tickets. Group travelers appreciate the efficiency, as it avoids confusion with multiple bookings.
If online booking feels overwhelming, Lufthansa also provides assistance over the phone. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 is available for travelers preferring personalized guidance. Representatives can confirm group rates, seating preferences, and ensure the entire group’s travel plan stays aligned. This hybrid flexibility—digital booking with phone backup—makes organizing multi-passenger flights incredibly convenient.
2. What steps ensure the best price on Lufthansa multi-passenger reservations?
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 connects you with pricing options that fit group travel budgets. Lufthansa uses a dynamic pricing model, meaning fares can change depending on demand, season, and booking window. To secure the best price, timing matters—booking months in advance often locks in lower fares. Travelers booking closer to departure may face higher rates, especially for larger groups requiring multiple seats on one flight.
When reserving for multiple passengers, Lufthansa’s system automatically bundles fares to ensure everyone pays the same rate if seats are available in the same fare class. However, if availability is limited, some tickets might default to a higher class. To avoid this, booking early is key.
Travelers should also consider Lufthansa’s seasonal promotions. These often include discounts on multi-passenger or family fares, providing another chance to save. Flexible travel dates can also unlock lower prices—midweek flights, for instance, are generally less expensive than weekend departures.
For groups, Lufthansa occasionally offers negotiated rates, particularly for corporate or educational travel. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 provides access to these exclusive deals. Reaching out directly ensures you’re not missing hidden opportunities. Bundled add-ons like checked baggage or flexible changes can further maximize value, giving groups peace of mind without unexpected costs later.
Booking strategically, comparing dates, and leveraging promotions allow travelers to secure competitive prices. Lufthansa’s transparent system ensures groups understand exactly
