The subject matter of Coldplay songs is deeply intertwined with Chris’s frame of mind. He has admitted he needs to be slightly morose, maudlin even, to write well. He cannot see how he can write if he is in a serious and happily committed relationship.

Chris made the new album sound all the more enticing when he revealed to VH1 some of the personal events that had surrounded its writing (virtually all of which the band kept a closely guarded secret): “[It’s] born from all the places we’ve been and the things we’ve experienced. Some of our friends have died and some of us have fallen in love. Some of us have fallen out of love and some of us have been to Haiti and some us have been to Australia. Some of us have met Bono and some of us have met someone with nothing. It’s like a massive culture gun fired at our heads.
