The equivalent of the moth’s light-compass reaction is the apparently irrational but useful habit of falling in love with one, and only one, member of the opposite sex. Rewards, by their very nature, narrow our focus. That’s helpful when there’s a clear path to a solution. They help us stare ahead and race faster. But “if-then” motivators are terrible for challenges like the candle problem. NASA engineers and technicians at the Cape were pushing themselves so hard in the final weeks people had to be ordered home to rest. It was a grueling time and yet the sort of interlude of adrenal exhilaration that men remember all their lives. It was an interlude of the dedication of body and soul to a cause such as men usually experience only during war. Well … this was war, even though no one had spelled it out in just that way. Without knowing it, they were caught up in the primordial spirit of single combat. Just days from now one of the lads would be up on top of the rocket for real. Everyone felt he had the life of the astronaut, whichever was chosen (only a few knew), in his hands. The MA–1 explosion here at the Cape nine months ago had been a chilling experience, even for veterans of flight test. The seven astronauts had been assembled for the event, partly to give them confidence in the new system. And their gullets had been stuck up toward the sky like everybody else’s, when the whole assembly blew to bits over their heads. In a few days one of those very lads would be lying on top of a rocket (albeit a Redstone, not an Atlas) when the candle was lit. Just about everybody here in NASA had seen the boys close up. Life is like a candle in the chart; we may fall but we raise again

The darkness is all around us. Very few people have the courage to light a candle against it. We are of a kind, and neither of us is holding a candle against the darkness. Like the unknown and unseen enemy we fight, people like you and me—we are the darkness. In some ways we are more like the things we’re fighting than the people we’re protecting. We are part of the darkness. Granted, our motives are better—from our perspective—but we wait in the darkness for our unseen enemy to make a move against those innocents with the candles. And by that light, we take aim.

… but also, let me add this. You know a One is so damn sure of himself that I – I’m going to sound like Frank Sinatra – I did it my way. And I don’t mean that in a rebellious sense. But like, uh, you know I sit with my coffee , I light my candle in the morning, I let Opie out and I let Opie back in. And I sorta settle into it. I’ve never been concerned about posture, you know, that’s what I mean… I sorta know, falsely or truthfully, what the essentials are and what the non-essentials are. I know it’s not good to sit in a too comfy chair, so I try to sit… but beyond that I let the spirit lead me. It’s not highly structured at all. Some days, if my dead head is dead, I will open a spiritual book, some days I’ll begin to journalise… although I’ve stopped doing that, it concerns me. I don’t know if… I keep thinking ‘You don’t have anything more to journalise about.’ I really do. I don’t know if its health issues I’m facing or what but I just: ‘No, that’s behind me now, that I need to write down what I’m experiencing.’ I really... I’m trying to figure out where that motivation is coming from. Not to need to write *and* not to need to read. So both of those are less. So I sorta just sit there *usually* *quite* content. So content that I, uh, I don’t feel the need to get up and start the day. I’m getting in here later than I used to. What does that all mean? I am praying. But I’m very much praying in my own way… of just being consciously in loving union with whatever is around me, whatever is right in front of me. And that comes easily now.

It can be tempting to make substantial degrees of sacrifice while in pursuit of our long-term goals. Do what you need to do, as long as it is sustainable. Do not burn the candle from both ends.
