I suspect it is a cultural phenomenon resulting from at least these three factors. First, a Darwinian world view has permeated people’s belief systems. It is a deterministic, fatalistic world view. A fatalistic attitude makes people feel hopeless and helpless and leaves us with a “whatever” or “WTF” attitude; we feel that we have no control over our destiny. Many have no sense that they are empowered image bearers who were created and redeemed for Kingdom rulership and authority. Rather, they view themselves as cosmic accidents, a product of fate, and subjected to its whims. Another factor is that we live in a culture of entitlement, which leaves us sitting by waiting for someone to hand something to us, to solve problems for us, to give us answers. Again, this weakens our steely resolve to address issues and get through them. We are left feeling like someone else is responsible to fix our problems, so we easily become too passive. This often transfers into our relationship with God, and we wait for God to sovereignly deliver us from our frailties. Rather than taking responsibility for our part of the equation of life change, we put all of it on God.
