Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.

Differences were meant by God not to divide but to enrich.
Joseph Houldsworth Oldham (The Church and its Function in Society)
I was fifteen when I left school. And what did I get to show for my ten years in the British education system? A piece of paper which said: John Osbourne attended Birchfield Road Secondary Modern. Signed, Mr Oldham (Headmaster) That was f**king it. Not a single qualification. Nothing. I had two career choices: manual labour or manual labour.
Ozzy Osbourne (I Am Ozzy)
You are everything I have in this world Gracie

It is more rewarding to be complicit with scarcity than excess.

I was once asked to pick a couple of records for an interview I was doing on Radio 2. I picked one by Will Oldham and one by Joanna Newsom. Someone on the production phoned me to say that I couldn't have either record because they were 'too alternative' and I could just pick two from their playlist. Now, personally, I think that Radio 2's listeners would dig both Joanna Newsom and Will Oldham if they heard their records, and that the fact they don't get to hear them contributes to the cultural wasteland we live in. I told them that I'd been to see Joanna Newsom in the Albert Hall a couple of weeks before and it had been sold out. How could she be 'too alternative'? 'Alternative' and 'mainstream' aren't strictly to do with whether things are popular or minority interest. They are ideological labels. Someone like Joe Pasquale would be called 'mainstream' and regularly pops up on TV, but would play the smaller end of the touring-theatre circuit. If Joanna Newsom can sell out Albert Hall, why can't she get played on Radio 2? I would agree that it's because her work is too layered, challenging and interesting. Think about that. What you get to hear about is filtered, and not filtered to get rid of useless cunts like Joe Pasquale, but of things that might enrich your life.

John Chisholm (Unleash Your Inner Company)
Forgive me, Lord, if ever I should wrap myself in pharisiac robes when I see another fall In no way am I greater because of another’s weakness. At the most it only turns the eyes of the crowd away from my own frailty. Few of us would ever think of hurting someone physically but too many times we have used the power of "talk" to kill. Here, Lord, take these stones I hold.

He turns to point the knife at Dave. Smitty opens his mouth to speak, but no words come out. Instead his eyes widen in surprise because with a clap of thunder, I blow a hole in his chest.

This wretched Inn, where we scarce stay to bait, We call our Dwelling-Place: We call one Step a Race: But angels in their full enlightened state, Angels, who Live, and know what ‘tis to Be, Who all the nonsense of our language see Who speak things, and our words, their ill-drawn pictures, scorn, When we, by a foolish figure, say, Behold an old man dead! then they Speak properly, and cry, Behold a man-child born!
Abraham Cowley (Selected Poems of Abraham Cowley, Edmund Waller, and John Oldham (Penguin Classics))
I wear a solar radiation suit. The lights we have over our artificial fields simulate real sunlight, so if I were in there for too long, I’d get a sunburn just like if I was on a beach. I guess up on the Burn (that’s what we call the land) they had something called sunscreen, but then some dermatologist down here designed the solar radiation suits and said they were much more effective protection. Sometimes I want to smack him.
Annie Oldham (The Burn (The Burn, #1))
There is a certain irony here, because many of the first werewolves to be outed in society from the 16th through the 18th centuries were actually women. Just as our American ancestors had their Salem Witch Trials, Europe had its Werewolf Trials, and a large number of the so-called “werewolves” tortured and burned at the stake were female. […] In the 17th-century werewolf trials of Estonia, women were about 150 percent more likely to be accused of lycanthropy; however, they were about 100 percent less likely to be remembered for it.” “Here’s also a pronounced lack of female werewolves in popular culture. Their near absence in literature and film is explained away by various fancies: they’re sterile, an aberration, or—most galling of all—they don’t even exist.Their omission from popular culture does one thing very effectively: It prevents us, and men especially, from being confronted by hairy, ugly, uncontrollable women. Shapeshifting women in fantasy stories tend to transform into animals that we consider feminine, such as cats or birds, which are pretty and dainty, and occasionally slick and wicked serpents. But because the werewolf represents traits that are accepted as masculine—strength, large size, violence, and hirsutism—we tend to think of the werewolf as being naturally male. The female werewolf is disturbing because she entirely breaks the rules of femininity.

We seem historically to be more comfortable with others who are similar to us rather than different—same

In sleep you’re protected by the fact that you’re asleep and, for the most part, alone, no matter how close somebody else might be to you physically. For the most part you’re asleep and alone, and it’s all . . . up to you.

Rick contacted me about the session, but he didn't know who in hell was coming in. I said, "Who you got?" He said, "Aretha Franklin." I said, "Boy, you better get your damn shoes on. You getting someone who can sing." Even the Memphis guys didn't really know who in the hell she was. I said, "Man, this woman gonna knock you out." They're all going, "Big deal!" When she come in there and sit down at the piano and hit that first chord, everybody was just like little bees just buzzing around the queen. You could tell by the way she hit the piano the gig was up. It was, "Let's get down to serious business." That first chord she hit was nothing we'd been demoing, and nothing none of them cats in Memphis had been, either. We'd just been dumb-dumb playing, but this was the real thing. That's the prettiest session picture I can ever remember. If I'd had a camera, I'd have a great film of that session, because I can still see it in my mind's eye, just how it was - Spooner on the organ, Moman playing guitar, Aretha at the piano - it was beautiful, better than any session I've ever seen, and I seen a bunch of 'em.' Spooner Oldham, the weedy keyboard player who is most known for never playing the same licks twice and who is ordinarily the most reticent of men, speaks in similar superlatives. 'I was hired to play keyboards. She was gonna stand up in front of the microphone and sing. She was showing us this song she had brought down there with her, she hit that magic chord when Wexler was going up the little steps to the control room, and I just stopped. I said, "Now, look, I'm not trying to cop out or nothing. I know I was hired to play piano, but I wish you'd let her play that thing, and I could get on organ and electric." And that's the way it was. It was a good, honest move, and one of the best things I ever done - and I didn't do nothing.

It’s crucial to any band to have good organization; it’s no good having a brash ideas-man like Andrew Oldham if there’s no support system.

Manchester United was once called Oldham Road and was based at the Three Crowns pub, with its players recruited from the men who regularly drank there. Everton began life at the Queen’s Head pub in the village of Everton in much the same way. But Queens Park Rangers started not as a pub team but a school team

On June 30, 1913, Bruce Ismay retired as Chairman of the White Star Line and began an ever-widening withdrawal from public life. He remained on a number of boards, but they were mostly honorific, and he spent much of his time at a secluded estate in a remote corner of Northern Ireland. Many writers have called him a “recluse.” His affectionate and devoted biographer, Wilton J. Oldham, takes exception to the term, but it is really a matter of semantics.

If you’re careful, you can be welcomed into natural systems, ecosystems, societal systems. But it sometimes feels like it would be more rewarding to be destroyed by a natural ecosystem than it would to be destroyed by a societal system…if you’re going to be destroyed.

Conscientious individuals are ruled by their heads. Emotions, urges, whims, or hungers do not often get the best of them.

Oldham’s decision disappointed Richard Graham, who had been looking forward to “taking everyone’s dirty underwear out of the closet in a trial.” And Oldham’s statement that should Jesse become involved in another crime, he “would not be so fortunate to be found not guilty by reason of insanity,” offended Graham, as Jesse had been adjudged to be sane. In Graham’s assessment, Oldham had behaved like a coward.

Craig Oldham (Oh Sh*t... What Now?)
The momentum present when you are a graduate is so powerful, and your learning curve so steep, that the confidence, talent, enthusiasm, individuality, skill and employability present at this time must be capitalized on; these are the attributes that employers are looking for. Breaking this momentum hinders much more than it helps. Your portfolio, if left unattended, becomes static, while your confidence, once battling with people your own age and often showing similar projects and responses to briefs, can take a big hit as the next year group steps up. And, above all – no matter how shallow it sounds – the reflection cast by a break in your career can be interpreted as a loss of love for what you do.
Craig Oldham (Oh Sh*t... What Now?)
Idiosyncratic types are sustained by the rich inner worlds of their Selves; they may or may not be successful by other people’s standards or fit comfortably into the social order, but no matter what others say or convention dictates, they continue to march to their own drummer.

Andrew had worked with Brian Epstein and was instrumental in creating the Beatles’ image. Epstein fired Andrew because they got into some bitch argument. Andrew took a large step to the left and branched out on his own: “Right, I’ll show you.” We were the instrument of his revenge on Epstein. We were the dynamite, Andy Oldham the detonator. The irony is that Oldham, at the start, the great architect of the Stones’ public persona, thought it was a disadvantage for us to be considered long-haired and dirty and rude. He was a very pristine boy himself at the time. The whole idea of the Beatles and the uniforms, keeping everything uniform, still made sense to Andrew.
Keith Richards (Life)
What probably really stuck in Brian’s craw was when Mick and I started writing the songs. He lost his status and then lost interest. Having to come to the studio and learn to play a song Mick and I had written would bring him down. It was like Brian’s open wound. Brian’s only solution became clinging to either Mick or me, which created a triangle of sorts. He had it in for Andrew Oldham, Mick and me, thought there was a conspiracy to roll him out. Which wasn’t true at all, but somebody’s got to write the songs. You’re quite welcome; I’ll sit around and write a song with you. What have you come up with? But no sparks flew when I was sitting around with Brian.
Keith Richards (Life)
Rachael had to keep her reaction in check when they went to Leslie’s home, which, not surprisingly, was something she would later describe as an aquamarine palace. Everything was beautiful like a beach house filled with calming colors of sand with aqua and translucent greens. All the furniture was large, light colored, and overstuffed. The walls were whitewashed and reminiscent of a beach bungalow at a five-star resort. It had been decorated with a calming theme in mind.
