When I try to visualize John the Baptist, I see a bearded hunter who had to have some sort of weaponry to function in the wild. Based on what I read in the Bible about John the Baptist, I actually tried to eat a locust once, but it tasted terrible, which gave me the idea that John the Baptist probably dipped them in honey first. Many of them had experienced digging canals and were known by the euphemism “navigators.” They wore the diminutive “navvy” as a term of pride. Polite society shunned them, but these magnificent railways would have been impossible without their contributions of sweat and blood. Their primary task was cleaving the hillsides so that tracks could be laid on a level plain for the weak locomotive engines of the day. Teams of navvies known as “butty gangs” blasted a route with gunpowder and then hauled the dirt out with the same kind of harness that so many children were then using in the coal mines: a man at the back of a full wheelbarrow would buckle a thick belt around his waist, then attach that to a rope dangling from the top of the slope and allow himself to be pulled up by a horse. This was how the Lime Street approach had been dug out, and it was dangerous. One 1827 fatality happened as “the poor fellow was in the act of undermining a heavy head of clay, fourteen or fifteen feet high, when the mass fell upon him and literally crushed his bowels out of his body,” as a Liverpool paper told it. The navvies wrecked old England along with themselves, erecting a bizarre new kingdom of tracks. Most SSCs on the market are NOT adequate for a newborn and therefore we recommend against using a SSC with newborns. Anything you add to the carrier to make it work (rolled up receiving blankets, towels, cloth diapers, etc) for a newborn is also adding a potential hazard. A baby should not lay sideways in the cradle carry or cradle hold in a soft structured carrier. Most SSC are best used from about 6 months of age on.

Straps: The SSC should have an adjustable chest strap, padded shoulder straps (about 3 inches wide), and a fairly wide (4 1/2 - 6 inches) waist belt (measured on lower back). Some of the waist belts are very stiff, others are soft. Ask questions of the seller before purchasing so you can ensure you are getting the type of padded shoulder straps and waist belt that is most comfortable for you. Waist belts also come in different lengths. For some SSCs you will have to purchase a belt extender if you are built heavier around the waist or some simply won‘t be tight enough if you are petite. The same holds true with shoulder straps. Some are too long for a person with a small torso and others will be too tight for a person with a long torso. Ask questions before buying.

Fabric: The fabric needs to be heavier like a good wrap at 5-8 oz per square yard. It can be a single layer if the bottom weight is heavy enough. Some have a lining and some are even slightly padded. The padding and lining is a matter of personal preference and not necessary to make a good baby carrier. Some have beautiful designs, others are more plain. You will be able to find something you like in all the different brands available. Bar tags, a sewn cross (X-box) or double stitching is needed for the top and bottom shoulder straps at each point they are sewn into the body or waist belt. Pockets on the body fabric are optional

Onbuhimo OK when Baby can sit unassisted. CAUTION: Do not use with an infant! Use with children who can sit unassisted! An onbuhimo, onbuhu or onbu is similar to a mei tai, but it originated in Japan. Onbuhimos do not have a waist belt, instead they have rings or fabric loops through which the shoulder straps are threaded. The onbu is, like the mei tai, essentially a rectangular piece of fabric with long shoulder straps sewn on top and rings in place of the waist belt.
