Si no tiene fe, dirá: "¡Qué buen pensamiento he tenido! ¡Qué suerte haber tomado el camino de la derecha más bien que el de la izquierda! la casualidad, verdaderamente, nos sirve bien algunas veces. ¡Cuánto me felicito por mi valor en no dejarme abatir!" Pero dirán algunos: "¿por qué el buen espíritu no le dijo bien claro, sigue esta senda, y al extremo encontrarás lo que te hace falta? ¿Por qué no se le ha manifestado, para guiarle y sostenerle en su abatimiento? De este modo le hubiera convencido de la intervención de la Providencia". En primer lugar sucede así para enseñarle que debe ayudarse a sí mismo y hacer uso de sus propias fuerzas, y luego, por tal incertidumbre, Dios pone a prueba la confianza que en El se tiene, así como la sumisión a su voluntad.

Dejando a un lado la cuestión de la genialidad de los representantes del pueblo, considérese simplemente el carácter complejo de los problemas pendientes de solución, aparte de los ramos diferentes de actividad en que deben adoptarse decisiones, y se comprenderá entonces la incapacidad de un sistema de gobierno que pone la facultad de la decisión final en manos de una asamblea, entre cuyos componentes sólo muy pocos poseen los conocimientos y la experiencia requeridos en los asuntos a tratar. Pues así como las más importantes medidas en materia económica resultan sometidas a un foro cuyos miembros, en sus nueve décimas partes, carecen de la preparación necesaria. De ahí proviene también la ligereza con que frecuentemente estos señores deliberan y resuelven cuestiones que serían motivo de honda reflexión aun para los más esclarecidos talentos. Allí se adoptan medidas de enorme trascendencia para el futuro de un Estado como si no se tratase de los destinos de toda una nacionalidad, sino solamente de una partida de naipes, que es lo que resultaría más propio de tales políticos. Sería naturalmente injusto creer que todo diputado de un parlamento semejante se halle dotado de tan escasa noción de responsabilidad. No. De ningún modo. Pero, el caso es que tal sistema, forzando al individuo a ocuparse de cuestiones que no conoce, lo corrompe paulatinamente. Nadie tiene allí el valor de decir: "Señores, creo que no entendemos nada de este asunto; yo al menos no tengo ni idea". Esta actitud tampoco modificaría nada porque, aparte de que una prueba tal de sinceridad quedaría totalmente incomprendida, no por un tonto honrado se resignarían los demás a sacrificar su juego. Así es como el representante aún sincero es obligado forzosamente al camino de la mentira y de la falsedad. Justamente la convicción de que la reacción individual poco o nada modificaría, mata cualquier impulso sincero que por ventura surja en uno u otro. Aquel dicho del viejo poeta Ennio: “Todos los mortales desean ser alabados”, se basa en la experiencia personal del autor; en los demás lo conjetura, y así parece expresar el deseo de todos los hombres. Si el bululú de marras hubiera dicho: “Todos amáis la alabanza y nadie el vituperio”, parecería expresar el querer de todos los hombres. Pero hay quienes odian los vicios, están descontentos de sí mismos, no aman la lisonja y dan incluso las gracias cuando, con benévola urbanidad, se les reprende, si es la enmienda el fin de la corrección. Si el gracioso actor cómico hubiese dicho: “Todos amáis la felicidad y nadie ansía ser desgraciado”, habría proclamado esta vez una verdad que nadie deja de reconocer en el fondo de su querer, porque, cualquiera que sea su voluntad secreta, no puede declinar de este anhelo, conocido de todos los hombres.

I was on my freshman spring break, and my family was living in Honolulu again, so Domenic and I had reconvened there. Both of us had, like everyone who grew up on surf mags, dreamed since childhood of surfing Honolua Bay. But it was odd, in a way, that we were here, waiting on waves, since we had both quit surfing years before. It happened when I turned sixteen. It wasn’t a clean break, or even a conscious decision. I just let other things get in the way: car, money to keep car running, jobs to make money to keep car running. The same thing happened with Domenic. I got a job pumping gas at a Gulf station on Ventura Boulevard, in Woodland Hills, for an irascible Iranian named Nasir. It was the first job I had that wasn’t devoted exclusively to the purpose of paying for a surfboard. Domenic also worked for Nasir. We both got old Ford Econoline vans, surf vehicles par excellence, but we rarely had time to surf. Then we both fell under the spell of Jack Kerouac and decided we needed to see America coast-to-coast. I got a job working graveyard shifts—more hours, more money—at a grubby little twenty-four-hour station on a rough corner out in the flatlands of the San Fernando Valley. It was a place where Chicano low riders would try to steal gas at 5 a.m.—Hey, let’s rip off the little gringo. I got a second job parking cars at a restaurant, taking “whites” (some kind of speed—ten pills for a dollar) to stay awake. The restaurant’s patrons were suburban mobsters, good tippers, but my boss was a Chinese guy who thought we should stand at attention between customers. He badgered and finally fired me for reading and slouching. Domenic was also stacking up money. When the school year ended, we pooled our savings, quit our gas station jobs, said good-bye (I assume) to our parents, and set off, zigzagging east, in Domenic’s van. We were sixteen, and we didn’t even take our boards.
