What's remarkable about fiction is that it places you in the unusual position of having no trajectory. You stand aside, motives abandoned for the duration. The characters have the trajectories now, while you just observe. And this stirs compassion that, in real life, is so often obscured by our own motives.

Psychological studies have recently shown that adversity can be a more powerful motivator than support. Successful people often remember being told that they could not do what they have, in fact, done brilliantly. Stubbornness drove them. Their parents or teachers have told them they will never make any money, or that they will never get a college degree, or that they will never marry and have children. The urge to prove authority wrong has often spurred human beings to unusual success.

70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Seven out of ten people you walk past going down the sidewalk are broke. You can model your life after them, and you will be one of them. Or you can mode your life after the weird people. Because wealth is unusual. It’s not normal. So you have to engage in unusual behaviors and habits to create unusual results

The conference is geared to people who enjoy meaningful discussions and sometimes "move a conversation to a deeper level, only to find out we are the only ones there." . . . When it's my turn, I talk about how I've never been in a group environment in which I didn't feel obliged to present an unnaturally rah-rah version of myself. . . .
Scientists can easily report on the behavior of extroverts, who can often be found laughing, talking, or gesticulating. But "if a person is standing in the corner of a room, you can attribute about fifteen motivations to that person. But you don't really know what's going on inside." . . .
So what is the inner behavior of people whose most visible feature is that when you take them to a party they aren't very pleased about it? . . .
The highly sensitive tend to be philosophical or spiritual in their orientation, rather than materialistic or hedonistic. They dislike small talk. They often describe themselves as creative or intuitive . . . . They dream vividly, and can often recall their dreams the next day. They love music, nature, art, physical beauty. They feel exceptionally strong emotions--sometimes acute bouts of joy, but also sorrow, melancholy, and fear.
Highly sensitive people also process information about their environments--both physical and emotional--unusually deeply. They tend to notice subtleties that others miss--another person's shift in mood, say, or a lightbulb burning a touch too brightly. . . .
[Inside fMRI machines], the sensitive people were processing the photos at a more elaborate level than their peers . . . . It may also help explain why they're so bored by small talk. "If you're thinking in more complicated ways," she told me, "then talking about the weather or where you went for the holidays is not quite as interesting as talking about values or morality."
The other thing Aron found about sensitive people is that sometimes they're highly empathic. It's as if they have thinner boundaries separating them from other people's emotions and from the tragedies and cruelties of the world. They tend to have unusually strong consciences. They avoid violent movies and TV shows; they're acutely aware of the consequences of a lapse in their own behavior. In social settings they often focus on subjects like personal problems, which others consider "too heavy.

Wherever a great heart throbs and rages, wherever a liberating thought flares up, there Athena is present, summoned rather by heroic readiness than by humble supplication. We shouldn't let our envy of distinguished masters of the arts distract us from the wonder of how each of us gets new ideas. Perhaps we hold on to our superstitions about creativity in order to make our own deficiencies seem more excusable. For when we tell ourselves that masterful abilities are simply unexplainable, we're also comforting ourselves by saying that those superheroes come endowed with all the qualities we don't possess. Our failures are therefore no fault of our own, nor are those heroes' virtues to their credit, either. If it isn't learned, it isn't earned.
When we actually meet the heroes whom our culture views as great, we don't find any singular propensities––only combinations of ingredients quite common in themselves. Most of these heroes are intensely motivated, but so are many other people. They're usually very proficient in some field--but in itself we simply call this craftmanship or expertise. They often have enough self-confidence to stand up to the scorn of peers--but in itself, we might just call that stubbornness. They surely think of things in some novel ways, but so does everyone from time to time. And as for what we call "intelligence", my view is that each person who can speak coherently already has the better part of what our heroes have. Then what makes genius appear to stand apart, if we each have most of what it takes?
I suspect that genius needs one thing more: in order to accumulate outstanding qualities, one needs unusually effective ways to learn. It's not enough to learn a lot; one also has to manage what one learns. Those masters have, beneath the surface of their mastery, some special knacks of "higher-order" expertise, which help them organize and apply the things they learn. It is those hidden tricks of mental management that produce the systems that create those works of genius. Why do certain people learn so many more and better skills? These all-important differences could begin with early accidents. One child works out clever ways to arrange some blocks in rows and stacks; a second child plays at rearranging how it thinks. Everyone can praise the first child's castles and towers, but no one can see what the second child has done, and one may even get the false impression of a lack of industry. But if the second child persists in seeking better ways to learn, this can lead to silent growth in which some better ways to learn may lead to better ways to learn to learn. Then, later, we'll observe an awesome, qualitative change, with no apparent cause--and give to it some empty name like talent, aptitude, or gift.

Now I can see where I got the unusual motivation for becoming smart that so amazed everyone at first. It was something Rose Gordon lived with day and night. Parent and Teacher Actions: 1. Ask children what their role models would do. Children feel free to take initiative when they look at problems through the eyes of originals. Ask children what they would like to improve in their family or school. Then have them identify a real person or fictional character they admire for being unusually creative and inventive. What would that person do in this situation? 2. Link good behaviors to moral character. Many parents and teachers praise helpful actions, but children are more generous when they’re commended for being helpful people—it becomes part of their identity. If you see a child do something good, try saying, “You’re a good person because you ___.” Children are also more ethical when they’re asked to be moral people—they want to earn the identity. If you want a child to share a toy, instead of asking, “Will you share?” ask, “Will you be a sharer?” 3. Explain how bad behaviors have consequences for others. When children misbehave, help them see how their actions hurt other people. “How do you think this made her feel?” As they consider the negative impact on others, children begin to feel empathy and guilt, which strengthens their motivation to right the wrong—and to avoid the action in the future. 4. Emphasize values over rules. Rules set limits that teach children to adopt a fixed view of the world. Values encourage children to internalize principles for themselves. When you talk about standards, like the parents of the Holocaust rescuers, describe why certain ideals matter to you and ask children why they’re important. 5. Create novel niches for children to pursue. Just as laterborns sought out more original niches when conventional ones were closed to them, there are ways to help children carve out niches. One of my favorite techniques is the Jigsaw Classroom: bring students together for a group project, and assign each of them a unique part. For example, when writing a book report on Eleanor Roosevelt’s life, one student worked on her childhood, another on her teenage years, and a third on her role in the women’s movement. Research shows that this reduces prejudice—children learn to value each other’s distinctive strengths. It can also give them the space to consider original ideas instead of falling victim to groupthink. To further enhance the opportunity for novel thinking, ask children to consider a different frame of reference. How would Roosevelt’s childhood have been different if she grew up in China? What battles would she have chosen to fight there?

When somebody tells us something that would be disturbing or inconvenient for us to believe, we reflexively scrutinize that person for some excuse to discredit him. Their disdain for emotion and dogged, blindered focus on Evidence and the Facts makes it tempting to speculate that people like Ken, rather than simply being more objective than the rest of us - which might threaten to make us feel stupid - just have more deeply buried agendas and are driven by unconscious forces about which they're in even better-defended denial. It's unusually not hard to find such ulterior motives in anyone, especially not in the sorts of people who are most likely to bring us such news.

CEO Gil Amelio stumbled. Ellison may have been baffled when Jobs insisted that he was not motivated by money, but it was partly true. He had neither Ellison’s conspicuous consumption needs nor Gates’s philanthropic impulses nor the competitive urge to see how high on the Forbes list he could get. Instead his ego needs and personal drives led him to seek fulfillment by creating a legacy that would awe people. A dual legacy, actually: building innovative products and building a lasting company. He wanted to be in the pantheon with, indeed a notch above, people like Edwin Land, Bill Hewlett, and David Packard. And the best way to achieve all this was to return to Apple and reclaim his kingdom. And yet when the cup of power neared his lips, he became strangely hesitant, reluctant, perhaps coy. He returned to Apple officially in January 1997 as a part-time advisor, as he had told Amelio he would. He began to assert himself in some personnel areas, especially in protecting his people who had made the transition from NeXT. But in most other ways he was unusually passive. The decision not to ask him to join the board offended him, and he felt demeaned

Perhaps the best known of these films were the three that Clint Eastwood starred in for director Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, in which he played a gunslinger or bounty hunter wandering the countryside and settling scores for a price. Eastwood’s character took the law into his own hands, but he was essentially on the side of good and order. While Eastwood’s character, a dark hero type, employed unusual means to bring about justice, viewers found him irresistible because he was inscrutable, macho, and capable. While his motives were questionable, he brings his own kind of order out of chaos—actions that readers and film viewers always appreciate. In fact, he was a man of action, was extremely self-reliant, and just didn’t give a damn—all qualities that have universal appeal. His character’s darkness was a departure from the usual heroes starring in traditional Westerns, and this stirred the viewers’ imaginations.

They did not awaken quickly, nor fling about nor shock their systems with any sudden movement. No, they arose from slumber as gently as a soap bubble floats out from its pipe. Down into the gulch they trudged, still only half awake. Gradually their wills coagulated. They built a fire and boiled some tea and drank it from the fruit jars, and at last they settled in the sun on the front porch. The flaming flies made halos about their heads. Life took shape about them, the shape of yesterday and of tomorrow. Discussion began slowly, for each man treasured the little sleep he still possessed. From this time until well after noon, intellectual comradeship came into being. Then roofs were lifted, houses peered into, motives inspected, adventures recounted. Ordinarily their thoughts went first to Cornelia Ruiz, for it was a rare day and night during which Cornelia had not some curious and interesting adventure. And it was an unusual adventure from which no moral lesson could be drawn. The sun glistened in the pine needles. The earth smelled dry and good. The rose of Castile perfumed the world with its flowers. This was one of the best of times for the friends of Danny. The struggle for existence was remote. They sat in judgment on their fellows, judging not for morals, but for interest. Anyone having a good thing to tell saved it for recounting at this time. But as a Puerto Rican woman, she belonged to not one but two minority groups. New research suggests that her double minority status may have amplified the costs and the benefits of speaking up. Management researcher Ashleigh Rosette, who is African American, noticed that she was treated differently when she led assertively than were both white women and black men. Working with colleagues, she found that double minority group members faced double jeopardy. When black women failed, they were evaluated much more harshly than black men and white leaders of both sexes. They didn’t fit the stereotype of leaders as black or as female, and they shouldered an unfair share of the blame for mistakes. For double minorities, Rosette’s team pointed out, failure is not an option. Interestingly, though, Rosette and her colleagues found that when black women acted dominantly, they didn’t face the same penalties as white women and black men. As double minorities, black women defy categories. Because people don’t know which stereotypes to apply to them, they have greater flexibility to act “black” or “female” without violating stereotypes. But this only holds true when there’s clear evidence of their competence. For minority-group members, it’s particularly important to earn status before exercising power. By quietly advancing the agenda of putting intelligence online as part of her job, Carmen Medina was able to build up successes without attracting too much attention. “I was able to fly under the radar,” she says. “Nobody really noticed what I was doing, and I was making headway by iterating to make us more of a publish-when-ready organization. It was almost like a backyard experiment. I pretty much proceeded unfettered.” Once Medina had accumulated enough wins, she started speaking up again—and this time, people were ready to listen. Rosette has discovered that when women climb to the top and it’s clear that they’re in the driver’s seat, people recognize that since they’ve overcome prejudice and double standards, they must be unusually motivated and talented. But what happens when voice falls on deaf ears?

Rarely did a murder involve the mysterious elements of dime novels and mystery stories. From the start, however, Geyer’s current assignment—it was now June 1895—had veered from the ordinary. One possible motive in the murder was an article Litvinenko wrote claiming Putin was a pedophile. The article said: After graduating from the Andropov Institute, which prepares officers for the KGB intelligence service, Putin was not accepted into the foreign intelligence. Instead, he was sent to a junior position in KGB Leningrad Directorate. This was a very unusual twist for a career of an Andropov Institute’s graduate with fluent German. Why did that happen with Putin? Because, shortly before his graduation, his bosses learned that Putin was a pedophile. So say some people who knew Putin as a student at the Institute… Many years later, when Putin became the FSB director and was preparing for the presidency, he began to seek and destroy any compromising materials collected against him by the secret services over earlier years. It was not difficult, provided he himself was the FSB director. Among other things, Putin found videotapes in the FSB Internal Security directorate, which showed him [having] sex with some underage boys.

An unusual chain-letter reached Quincy during the latter part of 1933,” wrote a local Illinois historian. “So rapidly did the chain-letter fad develop symptoms of mass hysteria and spread throughout the United States, that by 1935–1936 the Post Office Department, as well as agencies of public opinion, had to take a hand in suppressing the movement.” He provided a sample—a meme motivating its human carriers with promises and threats: We trust in God. Perhaps that was just a hunch."
Barbee shivered again. He knew that he himself possessed what he called the "nose for news" - an intuitive perception of human motivations and the impending events that would spring from them. It wasn't a faculty he could analyze or account for, but he knew that it wasn't unusual. Most successful reporters possessed it, he believed - even though, in an age of skepticism for everything except mechanistic materialism, they wisely denied it.
That dim sense had been useful to him - on those summer field trips, before Mendrick turned him out, it had led him to more than one promising prehistoric site, simply because he somehow knew where a band of wild hunters would prefer to camp, or to dig a comrade's grave.
Commonly, however, that uncontrolled faculty had been more curse than blessing. It made him too keenly aware of all that people thought and did around him, kept him troubled with an uneasy alertness. Except when he was drunk. He drank too much, and knew that many other newsmen did. That vague sensitivity, he believed; was half the reason.

I've defined myself, privately and abstractly, by my brief, intense years as an athlete, a swimmer. I practiced five or six hours a day, six days a week, eating and sleeping as much as possible in between. Weekends were spent either training or competing. I wasn't the best; I was relatively fast. I trained, ate, traveled, and showered with the best in the country, but wasn't the best; I was pretty good.
I liked how hard swimming at that level was- that I could do something difficult and unusual. Liked knowing my discipline would be recognized, respected, that I might not be able to say the right things or fit in, but I could do something well. I wanted to believe that I was talented; being fast was proof. Though I loved racing, the idea of fastest, of number one, of the Olympics, didn't motivate me.
I still dream of practice, of races, coaches and blurry competitors. I'm drawn to swimming pools, all swimming pools, no matter how small or murky. When I swim now, I step into the water as though absentmindedly touching a scar. My recreational laps are phantoms of my competitive races

Constantine’s motives were probably confused. He was an exceptionally superstitious man, and he no doubt shared the view, popular among professional soldiers, that all religious cults should be respected, to appease their respective gods. He clearly underwent a strange experience at some time in his military career, in which his Christian troops played a part. He was a slave to signs and omens and had the Christian Chi-Rho sign on his shields and standards long before Milan. Superstition guided his decision to build a new capital, the choice of its site, and many other of his major acts of state. He was not baptized until his last illness. This was by no means unusual, since few Christians then believed in a second forgiveness of sins; sinful or worldly men, especially those with public duties seen as incompatible with Christian virtue, often delayed baptism till they were about to depart. But Eusebius’s account of Constantine’s late baptism is ambiguous; and it may be that the Church refused him the sacrament because of his manner of life. Certainly it was not his piety which made him a Christian.

WHY THE ADMIRALTY would seek to assign fault to Turner defies ready explanation, given that isolating Germany as the sole offender would do far more to engender global sympathy for Britain and cement animosity toward Germany. By blaming Turner, however, the Admiralty hoped to divert attention from its own failure to safeguard the Lusitania. (Questioned on the matter in the House of Commons on May 10, 1915, Churchill had replied, rather coolly, “Merchant traffic must look after itself.”) But there were other secrets to protect, not just from domestic scrutiny, but also from German watchers—namely the fact that the Admiralty, through Room 40, had known so much about U-20’s travels leading up to the attack. One way to defend those secrets was to draw attention elsewhere. The Admiralty found added motivation to do so when, on May 12, wireless stations in Britain’s listening network intercepted a series of messages from the then homebound U-20, which upon entering the North Sea had resumed communication with its base at Emden. At the Admiralty these messages drew an unusual degree of attention. Room 40 asked all the stations that had intercepted them to confirm that they had transcribed them correctly and to provide signed and certified copies.

Some people put years into their heroic accomplishments; assassins do not. While stalking Richard Nixon, Bremer wrote, “I’m as important as the start of WWI. I just need the little opening, and a second of time.” Such narcissism is a central feature of every assassin, and like many of their characteristics, it is in us all to some degree. In his Pulitzer Prize winning book Denial of Death, Ernest Becker observes that narcissism is universal. Becker says every child’s “whole organism shouts the claim of his natural narcissism. It is too all-absorbing and relentless to be an aberration, it expresses the heart of the creature: the desire to stand out, to be the one in creation.” Becker says we all look for heroics in our lives, adding that in some people “it is a screaming for glory as uncritical and reflexive as the howling of a dog.” But the howls for glory of assassins had been unanswered in their mundane pre-attack lives. The assassin might be weird or unusual, but we cannot say we don’t understand his motives, his goal. He wants what Americans want: recognition, and he wants what all people want: significance. People who don’t get that feeling in childhood seek ways to get it in adulthood. It is as if they have been malnourished for a lifetime and seek to fix it with one huge meal. The same search for significance is part of the motivation for the young gang member who kills, because violence is the fastest way to get identity. Murderer Jack Henry Abbott describes the “involuntary pride and exhilaration all convicts feel when they are chained up hand and foot like dangerous animals. The world has focused on us for a moment. We are somebody capable of threatening the world.

Imagine the following experiment, performed by the developmental psychologist Grazyna Kochanska. A kind woman hands a toy to a toddler, explaining that the child should be very careful because it’s one of the woman’s favorites. The child solemnly nods assent and begins to play with the toy. Soon afterward, it breaks dramatically in two, having been rigged to do so. The woman looks upset and cries, “Oh my!” Then she waits to see what the child does next. Some children, it turns out, feel a lot more guilty about their (supposed) transgression than others. They look away, hug themselves, stammer out confessions, hide their faces. And it’s the kids we might call the most sensitive, the most high-reactive, the ones who are likely to be introverts who feel the guiltiest. Being unusually sensitive to all experience, both positive and negative, they seem to feel both the sorrow of the woman whose toy is broken and the anxiety of having done something bad. (In case you’re wondering, the woman in the experiments quickly returned to the room with the toy “fixed” and reassurances that the child had done nothing wrong.) In our culture, guilt is a tainted word, but it’s probably one of the building blocks of conscience. The anxiety these highly sensitive toddlers feel upon apparently breaking the toy gives them the motivation to avoid harming someone’s plaything the next time. By age four, according to Kochanska, these same kids are less likely than their peers to cheat or break rules, even when they think they can’t be caught. And by six or seven, they’re more likely to be described by their parents as having high levels of moral traits such as empathy. They also have fewer behavioral problems in general.

Sociologist Barry Glassner (1999) has documented many of the biases introduced by “If it bleeds, it leads” news reporting, and by the strategic efforts of special interest groups to control the agenda of public fear of crime, disease, and other hazards. Is an increase of approximately 700 incidents in 50 states over 7 years an “epidemic” of road rage? Is it conceivable that there is (or ever was) a crisis in children’s day care stemming from predatory satanic cults? In 1994, a research team funded by the U.S. government spent 4 years and $750,000 to reach the conclusion that the myth of satanic conspiracies in day care centers was totally unfounded; not a single verified instance was found (Goodman, Qin, Bottoms, & Shaver, 1994; Nathan & Snedeker, 1995). Are automatic-weapon-toting high school students really the first priority in youth safety? (In 1999, approximately 2,000 school-aged children were identified as murder victims; only 26 of those died in school settings, 14 of them in one tragic incident at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.) The anthropologist Mary Douglas (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1982) pointed out that every culture has a store of exaggerated horrors, many of them promoted by special interest factions or to defend cultural ideologies. For example, impure water had been a hazard in 14th-century Europe, but only after Jews were accused of poisoning wells did the citizenry become preoccupied with it as a major problem.
But the original news reports are not always ill-motivated. We all tend to code and mention characteristics that are unusual (that occur infrequently). [...] The result is that the frequencies of these distinctive characteristics, among the class of people considered, tend to be overestimated.

We are somebody capable of threatening the world.” Ernest Becker writes, “The urge to heroism is natural, and to admit it honest. For everyone to admit it would probably release such pent-up force as to be devastating to society.

Robert Rosenthal found a way. He approached a California public elementary school and offered to test the school’s students with a newly developed intelligence-identification tool, called the Harvard Test of Inflected Acquisition, which could accurately predict which children would excel academically in the coming year. The school naturally agreed, and the test was administered to the entire student body. A few weeks later, teachers were provided with the names of the children (about 20 percent of the student body) who had tested as high-potentials. These particular children, the teachers were informed, were special. Though they might not have performed well in the past, the test indicated that they possessed “unusual potential for intellectual growth.” (The students were not informed of the test results.) The following year Rosenthal returned to measure how the high-potential students had performed. Exactly as the test had predicted, the first- and second-grade high-potentials had succeeded to a remarkable degree: The first-graders gained 27 IQ points (versus 12 points for the rest of the class); and the second-graders gained 17 points (versus 7 points). In addition, the high-potentials thrived in ways that went beyond measurement. They were described by their teachers as being more curious, happier, better adjusted, and more likely to experience success as adults. What’s more, the teachers reported that they had enjoyed teaching that year more than any year in the past. Here’s the twist: the Harvard Test of Inflected Acquisition was complete baloney. In fact, the “high-potentials” had been selected at random. The real subject of the test was not the students but the narratives that drive the relationship between the teachers and the students. What happened, Rosenthal discovered, was replacing one story—These are average kids—with a new one—These are special kids, destined to succeed—served as a locator beacon that reoriented the teachers, creating a cascade of behaviors that guided the student toward that future. It didn’t matter that the story was false, or that the children were, in fact, randomly selected. The simple, glowing idea—This child has unusual potential for intellectual growth—aligned motivations, awareness, and behaviors.

Charles Bean, the official historian of Australia’s part in World War I, was unusual in dealing closely with the deeds of the soldiers on the front line, and not just the plans and orders of their leaders. At the end of his account of the Gallipoli landing in the Official History, he asked what made the soldiers fight on. What motive sustained them? At the end of the second or third day of the Landing, when they had fought without sleep until the whole world seemed a dream, and they scarcely knew whether it was a world of reality or of delirium – and often, no doubt, it held something of both; when half of each battalion had been annihilated, and there seemed no prospect before any man except that of wounds or death in the most vile surroundings; when the dead lay three deep in the rifle-pits under the blue sky and the place was filled with stench and sickness, and reason had almost vanished – what was it then that carried each man on? It was not love of a fight. The Australian loved fighting better than most, but it is an occupation from which the glamour quickly wears. It was not hatred of the Turk. It is true that the men at this time hated their enemy for his supposed ill-treatment of the wounded – and the fact that, of the hundreds who lay out, only one wounded man survived in Turkish hands has justified their suspicions. But hatred was not the motive which inspired them. Nor was it purely patriotism, as it would have been had they fought on Australian soil. The love of country in Australians and New Zealanders was intense – how strong, they did not realise until they were far away from their home. Nor, in most cases was the motive their loyalty to the tie between Australia and Great Britain. Although, singly or combined, all these were powerful influences, they were not the chief. Nor was it the desire for fame that made them steer their course so straight in the hour of crucial trial. They knew too well the chance that their families, possibly even the men beside them, would never know how they died. Doubtless the weaker were swept on by the stronger. In every army which enters into battle there is a part which is dependent for its resolution upon the nearest strong man. If he endures, those around him will endure; if he turns, they turn; if he falls, they may become confused. But the Australian force contained more than its share of men who were masters of their own minds and decisions. What was the dominant motive that impelled them? It lay in the mettle of the men themselves. To be the sort of man who would give way when his mates were trusting to his firmness; to be the sort of man who would fail when the line, the whole force, and the allied cause required his endurance; to have made it necessary for another unit to do his own unit’s work; to live the rest of his life haunted by the knowledge that he had set his hand to a soldier’s task and had lacked the grit to carry it through – that was the prospect which these men could not face. Life was very dear, but life was not worth living unless they could be true to their idea of Australian manhood.

In a now-famous experiment, he and his colleagues compared three groups of expert violinists at the elite Music Academy in West Berlin. The researchers asked the professors to divide the students into three groups: the “best violinists,” who had the potential for careers as international soloists; the “good violinists”; and a third group training to be violin teachers rather than performers. Then they interviewed the musicians and asked them to keep detailed diaries of their time. They found a striking difference among the groups. All three groups spent the same amount of time—over fifty hours a week— participating in music-related activities. All three had similar classroom requirements making demands on their time. But the two best groups spent most of their music-related time practicing in solitude: 24.3 hours a week, or 3.5 hours a day, for the best group, compared with only 9.3 hours a week, or 1.3 hours a day, for the worst group. The best violinists rated “practice alone” as the most important of all their music-related activities. Elite musicians—even those who perform in groups—describe practice sessions with their chamber group as “leisure” compared with solo practice, where the real work gets done. Ericsson and his cohorts found similar effects of solitude when they studied other kinds of expert performers. “Serious study alone” is the strongest predictor of skill for tournament-rated chess players, for example; grandmasters typically spend a whopping five thousand hours—almost five times as many hours as intermediatelevel players—studying the game by themselves during their first ten years of learning to play. College students who tend to study alone learn more over time than those who work in groups. Even elite athletes in team sports often spend unusual amounts of time in solitary practice. What’s so magical about solitude? In many fields, Ericsson told me, it’s only when you’re alone that you can engage in Deliberate Practice, which he has identified as the key to exceptional achievement. When you practice deliberately, you identify the tasks or knowledge that are just out of your reach, strive to upgrade your performance, monitor your progress, and revise accordingly. Practice sessions that fall short of this standard are not only less useful—they’re counterproductive. They reinforce existing cognitive mechanisms instead of improving them. Deliberate Practice is best conducted alone for several reasons. It takes intense concentration, and other people can be distracting. It requires deep motivation, often self-generated. But most important, it involves working on the task that’s most challenging to you personally. Only when you’re alone, Ericsson told me, can you “go directly to the part that’s challenging to you. If you want to improve what you’re doing, you have to be the one who generates the move. Imagine a group class—you’re the one generating the move only a small percentage of the time.” To see Deliberate Practice in action, we need look no further than the story of Stephen Wozniak. The Homebrew meeting was the catalyst that inspired him to build that first PC, but the knowledge base and work habits that made it possible came from another place entirely: Woz had deliberately practiced engineering ever since he was a little kid. (Ericsson says that it takes approximately ten thousand hours of Deliberate Practice to gain true expertise, so it helps to start young.)

As he became a teenager, there is strong evidence that he began to drink alcohol on a regular basis. It was not at all unusual for Dahmer to show up to school with a paper cup of alcohol taken from his parents’ house that he sipped from before school started for the day. This could explain some of Dahmer’s lack of motivation and the desire to be left alone, as well as his low ambitions as far as deciding what he wanted to do with his life. Dahmer drank to ease the pain of his loneliness, and perhaps to make it easier to be around other teens, to ease or lessen the anxiety. It was also likely a distraction from the problems that were going on at home when his parents fought.

Why I write . . . science fiction or fantasy . . . is a question which I am in a better position to answer. First, this is an area of fiction where the writer has considerably more freedom than in other types of fiction. I enjoy descriptive writing, and it pleases me to be able to describe landscapes and meteorological phenomena which could not exist on Earth, but which might be possible elsewhere; similarly, with characters and their motivations. For an example, I indulged my fancy in all of these things in my novelette ‘The Keys To December,’ which contained unmanlike humans engaged in an unusual project on a strange world. This provided an aesthetic pleasure of a sort that would not have obtained had I written a more down-to-Earth story.

Given the obvious “will to power” (as Friedrich Nietzsche called it) of the human race, the enormous energy put into its expression, the early emergence of hierarchies among children, and the childlike devastation of grown men who tumble from the top, I’m puzzled by the taboo with which our society surrounds this issue. Most psychology textbooks do not even mention power and dominance, except in relation to abusive relationships. Everyone seems in denial. In one study on the power motive, corporate managers were asked about their relationship with power. They did acknowledge the existence of a lust for power, but never applied it to themselves. They rather enjoyed responsibility, prestige, and authority. The power grabbers were other men.
Political candidates are equally reluctant. They sell themselves as public servants, only in it to fix the economy or improve education. Have you ever heard a candidate admit he wants power? Obviously, the word “servant” is doublespeak: does anyone believe that it’s only for our sake that they join the mudslinging of modern democracy? Do the candidates themselves believe this? What an unusual sacrifice that would be. It’s refreshing to work with chimpanzees: they are the honest politicians we all long for. When political philosopher Thomas Hobbes postulated an insuppressible power drive, he was right on target for both humans and apes. Observing how blatantly chimpanzees jockey for position, one will look in vain for ulterior motives and expedient promises.
I was not prepared for this when, as a young student, I began to follow the dramas among the Arnhem chimpanzees from an observation window overlooking their island. In those days, students were supposed to be antiestablishment, and my shoulder-long hair proved it. We considered power evil and ambition ridiculous. Yet my observations of the apes forced me to open my mind to seeing power relations not as something bad but as something ingrained. Perhaps inequality was not to be dismissed as simply the product of capitalism. It seemed to go deeper than that. Nowadays, this may seem banal, but in the 1970s human behavior was seen as totally flexible: not natural but cultural. If we really wanted to, people believed, we could rid ourselves of archaic tendencies like sexual jealousy, gender roles, material ownership, and, yes, the desire to dominate.
Unaware of this revolutionary call, my chimpanzees demonstrated the same archaic tendencies, but without a trace of cognitive dissonance. They were jealous, sexist, and possessive, plain and simple. I didn’t know then that I’d be working with them for the rest of my life or that I would never again have the luxury of sitting on a wooden stool and watching them for thousands of hours. It was the most revelatory time of my life. I became so engrossed that I began trying to imagine what made my apes decide on this or that action. I started dreaming of them at night and, most significant, I started seeing the people around me in a different light.

In comparison with the mode of life of whole millennia of mankind we present-day men live in a very immoral age: the power of custom is astonishingly enfeebled and the moral sense so rarefied and lofty it may be described as having more or less evaporated. That is why the fundamental insights into the origin of morality are so difficult for us latecomers, and even when we have acquired them we find it impossible to enunciate them, because they sound so uncouth or because they seem to slander morality! This is, for example, already the case with the chief proposition: morality is nothing other (therefore no more!) than obedience to customs, of whatever kind they may be; customs, however, are the traditional way of behaving and evaluating. In things in which no tradition commands there is no morality; and the less life is determined by tradition, the smaller the circle of morality. The free human being is immoral because in all things he is determined to depend upon himself and not upon a tradition: in all the original conditions of mankind, 'evil' signifies the same as 'individual', 'free', 'capricious', 'unusual', 'unforeseen', 'incalculable'. Judged by the standard of these conditions, if an action is performed not because tradition commands it but for other motives (because of its usefulness to the individual, for example), even indeed for precisely the motives which once founded the tradition, it is called immoral and is felt to be so by him who performed it: for it was not performed in obedience to tradition. What is tradition? A higher authority which one obeys, not because it commands what is useful to us, but because it commands. What distinguishes this feeling in the presence of tradition from the feeling of fear in general? It is fear in the presence of a higher intellect which here commands, of an incomprehensible, indefinite power, of something more than personal there is superstition in this fear. Originally all education and care of health, marriage, cure of sickness, agriculture, war, speech and silence, traffic with one another and with the gods belonged within the domain of morality: they demanded one observe prescriptions without thinking of oneself as an individual. Originally, therefore, everything was custom, and whoever wanted to elevate himself above it had to become lawgiver and medicine man and a kind of demi-god: that is to say, he had to make customs a dreadful, mortally dangerous thing! Who is the most moral man? First, he who obeys the law most frequently: who, like the Brahmin12, bears a consciousness of the law with him everywhere and into every minute division of time, so that he is continually inventive in creating opportunities for obeying the law. Then, he who obeys it even in the most difficult cases. The most moral man is he who sacrifices the most to custom: what, however, are the greatest sacrifices? The way in which this question is answered determines the development of several divers kinds of morality; but the most important distinction remains that which divides the morality of most frequent obedience from that of the most difficult obedience.

In an unusually vociferous outburst of indignation at a meeting in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows’ hall at Settleville, Major Guest referred to it as “the fell blight of Maydewism.” When a physician discovers a new and especially malignant disease his school of practice compliments him by naming the malady after him; when a political leader develops a political system of his own, his opponents, although actuated by different motives, do the same thing, which may be taken as an absolute sign that the person in question has made some sincere enemies at least.

All week, we’ve heard pep talks like this one from Scott at last night’s post-Razzle’s debrief: “To me, here’s the motivation to evangelize: If I’m a doctor, and I find the cure for a terminal illness, and if I care about people, I’m going to spread that cure as widely as possible. If I don’t, people are going to die.”
Leave the comparison in place for a second. If Scott had indeed found the cure to a terminal illness and if this Daytona mission were a vaccination campaign instead of an evangelism crusade, my group members would be acting with an unusually large portion of mercy—much more, certainly, than their friends who spent the break playing Xbox in their sweatpants. And if you had gone on this immunization trip, giving up your spring break for the greater good, and had found the sick spring breakers unwilling to be vaccinated, what would you do? If a terminally ill man said he was “late for a meeting,” you might let him walk away. But—and I’m really stretching here—if you really believed your syringe held his only hope of survival, and you really cared about him, would you ignore the rules of social propriety and try every convincement method you knew?

Gentile’s office in downtown Las Vegas, I got on the elevator and turned around and there was a TV camera. It was just the two of us in the little box, me and the man with the big machine on his shoulder. He was filming me as I stood there silent. “Turn the camera off,” I said. He didn’t. I tried to move away from him in the elevator, and somehow in the maneuvering he bumped my chin with the black plastic end of his machine and I snapped. I slugged him, or actually I slugged the camera. He turned it off. The maids case was like a county fair compared with the Silverman disappearance, which had happened in the media capital of the world. It had happened within blocks of the studios of the three major networks and the New York Times. The tabloids reveled in the rich narrative of the case, and Mom and Kenny became notorious throughout the Western Hemisphere. Most crimes are pedestrian and tawdry. Though each perpetrator has his own rap sheet and motivation and banged-up psyche, the crime blotter is very repetitive. A wife beater kills his wife. A crack addict uses a gun to get money for his habit. Liquor-store holdups, domestic abuse, drug dealer shoot-outs, DWIs, and so on. This one had a story line you could reduce to a movie pitch. Mother/Son Grifters Held in Millionaire’s Disappearance! My mother’s over-the-top persona, Kenny’s shady polish, and the ridiculous rumors of mother-son incest gave the media a narrative it couldn’t resist. Mom and Kenny were the smart, interesting, evil criminals with the elaborate, diabolical plan who exist in fiction and rarely in real life. The media landed on my life with elephant feet. I was under siege as soon as I returned to my office after my family’s excursion to Newport Beach. The deluge started at 10 A.M. on July 8, 1998. I kept a list in a drawer of the media outlets that called or dropped by our little one-story L-shaped office building on Decatur. It was a tabloid clusterfuck. Every network, newspaper, local news station, and wire service sent troops. Dateline and 20/20 competed to see who could get a Kimes segment on-air first. Dateline did two shows about Mom and Kenny. I developed a strategy for dealing with reporters. My unusual training in the media arts as the son of Sante, and as a de facto paralegal in the maids case, meant that I had a better idea of how to deal with reporters than my staff did. They might find it exciting that someone wanted to talk to them, and forget to stop at “No comment.” I knew better. So I hid from the camera crews in a back room, so there’d be no pictures, and I handled the calls myself. I told my secretary not to bother asking who was on the line and to transfer all comers back to me. I would get the name and affiliation of the reporter, write down the info on my roster, and

If we purchased the land, the zoo would be enlarged from four acres to six. At the time, it seemed like an enormous step to take. We argued back and forth. We talked, dreamed, and planned. Steve always seemed to worry about the future.
“If anything happens to me, promise that you’ll take care of the zoo.”
“Of course I will,” I said. “That’s easy to promise, but nothing is going to happen to you. Don’t worry.”
“Will you still love me if a croc grabs me and I lose an arm or a leg?”
“Yes, of course I would still love you,” I said.
But there were many evenings when he would run through improbably scenarios, just checking to see how I really felt. One night he looked particularly concerned, his brow furrowed.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Tell me why you married me.”
I laughed. “Because you’re hot in the cot.”
That broke the tension, and he laughed too. We both relaxed a little bit. But he would sometimes wonder if I’d married him just because I loved him, or if it was because he was a bit of Tarzan and Croc Dundee and Indiana Jones all rolled into one.
“I’m in love with Steve Irwin,” I assured him, “and part of the reason I love you is because you are such a staunch advocate for wildlife. Your empathy and compassion for all animals is part of it too. But most of all, I know that destiny brought us together.”
Steve continued our serious discussion, and he spoke of his mortality. He was convinced that he would never reach forty. That’s why he was in such a hurry all the time, to get as much done as he could. He didn’t feel sad about it. He only felt the motivation to make a difference before he was gone.
“I’m not afraid of death,” he said. “I’m only afraid of dying. I don’t want to get sick and dwindle. I love working hard and playing hard and living hard, and making every moment count.”
I learned so much from Steve. He helped me reevaluate my own purpose, my own life. What would happen if I didn’t make it to forty? What legacy would I leave?
That evening he was unusually contemplative. “None of our petty problems really matter,” he said.
I agreed. “In a hundred years, what difference is it going to make, worrying about this two acres of land? We need to focus on the real change that will make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren.”
Steve gave me a strange look. Children? We had never discussed having children much, because we were flat strapped. The thought of filming more documentaries, running the zoo, and raising a family was just too daunting. But that evening we did agree on one thing: We would spend some of my savings and make the leap to enlarge the zoo. We were both so happy with our decision.
“We’re lucky that we met before I became the Crocodile Hunter,” he said.
I knew what he was talking about. It made things a lot easier, a lot more clear-cut. I had fallen in love with Steve Irwin, not the guy on TV.
“I don’t know how they do it,” he said.
“Who?” I asked.
“People in the limelight,” he said. “How do they tell who’s in it for them and who’s just after their celebrity? It puts a new slant on everything. Not for us, though,” he added.
“Too right,” I agreed.

This would be the first croc research trip where both Bindi and Robert were old enough to participate. Robert was two and a half, and walking and talking like a serious little man. Bindi, of course, had been involved in croc research trips before. But now she had new motivation. We were in the middle of filming her own nature show, Bindi the Jungle Girl.
This was important for Steve. “There’d be nothing that would make me happier than having Bindi just take over filming and I could take it easy and run the zoo, do my conservation work, and let Bindi have the limelight,” Steve would say.
It might have seemed like an unusual thing to say about a kid who just turned eight, but Bindi was no ordinary kid. She had a calling. I would sense it when I was around her, just as I sensed it when I first met Steve.
Although Bindi was a regular kid most of the time--playing and being goofy, with me making her eat her vegetables, brush her teeth, and go to school on time--there were many moments when I’d see someone who’d been here before. Bindi would participate in the filming in such a way that she always made sure a certain conservation message came through, or she’d want to do a take again to make sure her words got the message across properly.
I continued to marvel at the wise being in this little person’s body. I kept catching glimpses, like snapshots through the window of a moving train, of this person who knew she was working toward making the world a better place. Watching her evolve was truly special.

Some Acid Tests to Be Made in Separating Facts from Mere Information or Inference Scrutinise with great care everything you read in books, regardless of who wrote them, and never accept the conclusions of any writer as being conclusive without asking the following questions and satisfying yourself as to the correctness of the answers: 1. Is the writer a recognised authority on the subject on which he writes? 2. Did the writer have an ulterior or selfish motive other than that of imparting accurate information? 3. Is the writer a paid propagandist whose profession is that of organising public opinion for a price? If he is, weigh his conclusions with unusual care. 4. Has the writer a profit interest or other personal interest in the subject on which he writes? If so, make allowance for this in the acceptance of his conclusions. 5. Is the writer a person of sound judgement, and not a fanatic on the subject on which he writes? Fanatics are inclined to exaggerate, even when stating facts, and to colour facts so they may convey misleading impressions. 6. Are there reasonably accessible sources from which the writer’s statements may be checked and verified? If so, consult them before accepting his conclusions. 7. Ascertain, also, the writer’s reputation for truth and veracity. Some writers are careless concerning the truth. Half-truths are frequently the most dangerous truths. 8. Be careful about accepting as facts the statements of overzealous persons who have the habit of allowing their imaginations to run wild. Such people are known as ‘radicals’ and their conclusions may be misleading if relied upon. 9. Learn to be cautious and to use your own judgement, no matter who is trying to influence you. If a statement does not harmonise with your own reasoning power (and you should train your reason to function clearly), if it is out of harmony with your own experience, hold it up for further examination before accepting it as fact. Falsehood has a queer way of bringing with it some warning note, perhaps in the tone of one’s voice, or in the expression on one’s face, if it comes through the spoken word. Train yourself to recognise this warning and to be guided by it. 10. In seeking facts from others, do not disclose to them what facts you expect to find, as many people have the bad habit of trying to please, even if they have to exaggerate or falsify in order to do so. 11. Science is the art of organising

to ask another teacher for help may not sound unusual, research shows that it’s quite rare among selfless givers. Selfless givers “feel uncomfortable receiving support,” write Helgeson and colleague Heidi Fritz. Selfless givers are determined to be in the helper role, so they’re reluctant to burden or inconvenience others. Helgeson and Fritz find that selfless givers receive far less support than otherish givers, which proves psychologically and physically costly. As burnout expert Christina Maslach and colleagues conclude, “there is now a consistent and strong body of evidence that a lack of social support is linked to burnout.” In contrast, otherish givers recognize the importance of protecting their own well-being. When they’re on the brink of burnout, otherish givers seek help, which enables them to marshal the advice, assistance, and resources necessary to maintain their motivation and energy. Three decades of research show that receiving support from colleagues is a robust antidote to burnout. “Having a support network of teachers is huge,

Tell me what you can bring to this family. Does your father agree with this union?"
Casca didn't waver. "He does. He has remarked to me many times how much he would like to see our families united."
Apicius responded with an incline of his head and his mouth turned up at the edges in a thoughtful smile. "Explain to me, then, why are you here instead of him?"
"He doesn't have my conviction- that you would find me more suitable than Dolabella or Narses."
I was surprised at the audacity of this young man. Apicius was also surprised. He didn't respond right away, which was unusual. When he did, he sounded amused and- although Casca couldn't know it- impressed. "And why do you think I would find you more suitable?"
"It is quite simple." Casca looked at me, then at Apicius. "I love your daughter. They do not."
Apicius snorted. "Love is not a prerequisite to marriage."
"Quite true. However, I bring to you both power and influence- through my father now, but also in my future as I follow in his footsteps. I will continue to bring you and your family honor, and precious votes in the elections. And what I can do that Dolabella and Narses cannot is assure you I will take care of your daughter with every fiber of my being."
"Go on," Apicius said, intrigued. I was glad I had decided to bring Casca here on such impulse.
"I have watched you with Apicata over these many months. I know how you dote on her, how you hold her close to your heart. She is as important to you as your love for culinary delights," he remarked.
Good, I thought. The boy had a sense of how to stroke Apicius's ego, though I knew the truth that Casca- and likely even Apicius- did not. Food and fame would always be first in Apicius's heart.
"I can promise you that your daughter will have love and laughter. Narses and Dolabella care not for her as much as they do for your money. My motives are pure. Few in this world have the chance to marry for love. Let your daughter be one of them.

I had to think about this message for a few days to get clear on my own response. I don’t think that anything you say here is wrong or overstated or unusual. Many people find themselves needing assistance and support because of bad decisions repeated over a lifetime. Many people program shop. Many people abuse the system. Many people misdirect resources. Many people don’t try to improve their circumstances. Here’s my perspective: I choose not to think about this. The reality is that these same bad decisions, abuses of the system, etc., can happen regardless of the structure of the system. And I have made a really deliberate choice in my life to prioritize grace over fairness. That’s not the right decision for everyone, and I’m not saying that my personal preferences always make sound policy. But this is where I am. I choose grace. So even though many people create their own circumstances (some over and over and over again), I want them to have a place to live and food to eat and the opportunity to live with more ease even if they will likely blow that opportunity. I choose not to think about cigarettes or televisions or iPhones or how hard someone works compared to how hard I work. That search for justice makes me miserable and gets me nowhere. I can’t control anyone’s choices, motivation, or path, and I certainly don’t think government can. That’s why I’m leaning more toward universal basic income. Let’s dismantle the layers of administrators designed to essentially control people and just provide them with charity and the opportunity to later repay that charity by contributing to the system. Again, this is in no way a criticism of your position, which is valid and one I understand. This is just where I am. 19

It is unusual for those wielding plutocratic power in America to exercise it directly, according to Jeffrey Winters, the political scientist specializing in oligarchy. Direct rule by the superrich invites a dangerous amount of scrutiny. Those who have used their vast fortunes to secure public office in the United States, like Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, typically have made an effort not to appear to be ruling as oligarchs or for them. Pope clearly sensed the peril. He took care to say that he would waive the usual salary and only stay in office for a year. But questions about self-interest arose almost immediately. As North Carolina took a whiplash-inducing lurch in favor of the haves at the expense of the have-nots, it stirred a heated debate about the influence of big money in the state’s politics in general and about the motives and financial designs of Art Pope in particular.

Major depression also appears to have become unusually widespread in the late Renaissance. This disorder is diagnosed when a person shows a severely depressed mood, a loss of interest and motivation, and withdraws from usual activities. In Elizabethan Malady, Lawrence Babb analyzes references to melancholy in diverse literary works, finding that while they are almost nonexistent in the early Renaissance, by the 1600s they are a principal theme in prose, drama, and biography. Babb concludes that the late Renaissance was characterized by “an epidemic of melancholy.” The poet John Donne, who offered sonnets to the “Holy Sadness of the Soul,” provided a vivid description of this malady, which he himself knew well: “God has seen fit to give us the dregs of misery, an extraordinary sadness, a predominant melancholy, a faintness of heart, a cheerlessness, a joylessness of spirit.

In today’s fast-paced online environment, a verified PayPal account can be the difference between business stagnation and seamless growth. From unlocking transaction limits to accessing PayPal’s full suite of financial tools, buying a verified account is more than just a shortcut—it’s a strategic move for professionals who value time, trust, and transactional efficiency.
Understanding What a Verified PayPal Account Offers
A verified PayPal account is one that has passed all the required verification processes. These typically include linking a real bank account, confirming a debit or credit card, verifying an associated email address and phone number, and sometimes providing government-issued identification. The verification process not only confirms the user's identity but also activates the full suite of PayPal’s capabilities, including unlimited transactions, business integrations, and full fund access.
Unverified accounts, by contrast, are limited in both sending and receiving capacities. These restrictions can be incredibly frustrating for business owners or freelancers attempting to operate efficiently. In some countries, it’s even harder to verify a PayPal account due to limited banking infrastructure or lack of PayPal support altogether. For users in such regions, buying a verified PayPal account offers instant accessibility, saving both time and opportunity costs.
Why People Choose to Buy Verified PayPal Accounts
The reasons for buying a verified PayPal account are both practical and strategic. One of the most common motivations is to avoid the lengthy and sometimes complicated verification process. For users operating in countries where PayPal has limitations or where bank integration is unavailable, verification may not even be an option. In these cases, purchasing a verified account registered in a more PayPal-friendly region becomes a viable solution.
Digital entrepreneurs who manage multiple online stores, marketing campaigns, or affiliate programs often need more than one PayPal account. Managing separate streams of revenue or organizing finances across different brands or projects becomes significantly easier with dedicated, verified accounts. Instead of struggling with restrictions or risking account flags due to unusual activity, buying verified accounts allows for professional, risk-reduced management.
Freelancers and service providers also benefit from the credibility that comes with using a verified PayPal account. When clients see that you’re using a trusted and fully verified payment gateway, it immediately builds confidence. It sends a message of legitimacy, security, and professionalism—all crucial elements in a successful business relationship.

✅Why People Consider Buying Verified Accounts
People chase pre-verified accounts for apparent convenience: avoid paperwork, access higher limits immediately, or operate multiple accounts quickly. Some are motivated by business needs, others by shady intent (evading limits, laundering, or hiding ownership). Whatever the reason, shortcuts have costs.
✅Why I Can’t Help You Buy Accounts (Short Refusal + Rationale)
I can’t provide sites or instructions for buying verified accounts. Facilitating the purchase or sale of verified financial accounts likely supports fraud, identity misuse, or evasion of regulatory checks—activities that are illegal and unsafe. Instead, I’ll give practical, legal alternatives so you can accomplish your goals without crossing legal or ethical lines.
✅Legal Consequences of Buying or Using Bought Accounts
Contractual Breach / Account Termination: Binance’s Terms of Service require accurate identity information. Buying an account violates those terms and will likely lead to immediate suspension or permanent banning.
Civil Liability: If the original owner is a victim of identity theft or the account was created with stolen credentials, using it could expose you to civil claims.
Criminal Exposure: If an account is used to move illicit funds (even unknowingly), you may be investigated for money laundering or aiding criminal activity. Law enforcement involvement can lead to fines or criminal charges.
Regulatory Consequences: Exchanges must report suspicious activity; large or unusual transactions can trigger reporting to authorities.
✅Practical Risks & Scams You’ll Face
Scam Sellers: Sellers can take payment and vanish, or hand you credentials that get reclaimed by the original owner.
Stolen Accounts: Many “verified” accounts for sale are stolen. If the rightful owner regains control or files a complaint, you lose access and possibly the money in the account.
Chargebacks & Fraud: If you fund an account with unauthorised or illicit funds, platforms will freeze assets and reverse transactions.
Reputational Harm: If you’re a business, losing funds or getting embroiled in investigations damages customers’ trust and your brand.
✅How Binance Detects and Responds to Fraud
Modern exchanges use layered defenses—transaction monitoring, device fingerprinting, KYC rechecks, and AML systems. When anomalies appear (sudden IP changes, unusual volumes, or disputed ownership), exchanges freeze accounts and request evidence. If you can’t prove legitimate ownership, the account stays frozen and may be handed to law enforcement.

Why Would Someone Want to Buy Old Gmail Accounts?
There are several reasons why someone might want to buy an old Gmail account. Here are some of the most common motivations:
1. Bulk Account Management for Businesses:
For businesses involved in digital marketing, buying old Gmail accounts can be a useful strategy. It can help manage multiple accounts for various campaigns without the hassle of creating new ones. Businesses can easily set up Google Ads, manage multiple YouTube channels, or create Google My Business listings using old Gmail accounts.
2. Access to Account History and Established Reputation:
Older Gmail accounts often come with an established reputation. For example, Gmail accounts that are several years old may have an improved trust level and a higher chance of being accepted by Google’s algorithms. For individuals who are serious about online marketing, this can be an important factor.
3. Avoiding Verification Hassles:
Google sometimes asks for additional verification when creating new accounts, especially if they notice unusual activities. Buying an old Gmail account can save you time and effort in verifying your identity and phone number.
4. Enhanced Security Features:
Older Gmail accounts might have more robust security settings, such as added layers of protection, that newer accounts don’t always have. This can provide extra peace of mind if you are worried about security risks.
5. For Collecting Data or Managing Multiple Accounts:
If you're involved in online research, gathering data, or managing a variety of personal or professional projects, having several Gmail accounts with different histories can be beneficial for conducting outreach, handling customer support, or simply keeping your data organized.
Is It Safe to Buy Old Gmail Accounts?
While buying old Gmail accounts might seem like an easy shortcut, it’s important to note that it can come with certain risks. Let’s examine these in more detail.
1. Account Recovery Issues:
If you buy a Gmail account from a third-party seller, there is always the possibility that the account’s original owner can reclaim it. Google’s account recovery process might not always be straightforward, and if the account was not transferred securely, you might lose access to it.
2. Violated Terms of Service:
Google’s Terms of Service prohibit the buying and selling of accounts. This means that purchasing an old Gmail account can be seen as a violation of Google’s policies. If Google detects that the account was transferred or bought, it could lead to the account being suspended or banned, leaving you with nothing.
3. Potential for Fraud or Scams:
There are plenty of online sellers who claim to offer old Gmail accounts for sale, but not all of them are trustworthy. You might end up paying for an account that doesn’t work, or worse, one that’s already been flagged for suspicious activity. Always ensure that you are buying from a reputable seller.
If you’ve decided that buying an old Gmail account is the right move for you, follow these guidelines to ensure a secure transaction:

Even though Google Voice is free to set up in most regions, many people still look for where to buy Google Voice accounts. The motivations vary, but they usually fall into three main categories:
✅Convenience for Business Owners
Running a business in 2026 often means needing multiple lines for sales, support, and operations. Instead of registering each account individually, some business owners try to buy pre-made accounts. They assume this saves time. However, Google offers Workspace Voice for this exact purpose, which is much safer and compliant.
✅Privacy & Security Needs
Some people value an extra layer of privacy when communicating online. For example, freelancers, marketers, or even everyday users may want a separate number for work, dating apps, or online transactions. Instead of using their personal number, they consider buying a ready-made Google Voice account.
✅International Communication
Since Google Voice offers affordable international calling, some users abroad believe that buying U.S.-based accounts will give them better access. Unfortunately, accounts sold by unauthorized sellers often violate Google’s terms and may not last long.
✅Risks of Buying Google Voice Accounts from Unauthorized Sellers
✅Before rushing to “buy Google Voice accounts,” it’s crucial to understand the risks involved.
✅Account Suspension & Loss
Google actively monitors account activity. If they detect unusual login patterns or suspicious use, the account can be suspended permanently — meaning you’ll lose both your money and the number.
✅Fraud and Scams
The market for buying accounts is filled with fake sellers. Many provide non-functional credentials, resell the same account multiple times, or vanish after payment. This is one of the most common complaints.
✅Legal & Compliance Issues
Because Google Voice accounts are tied to identity verification, buying them may breach terms of service and potentially cause legal complications, especially if used for business.
Key takeaway: While buying might sound like a shortcut, it often costs more in the long run due to suspensions, fraud, and compliance issues.
✅How to Get Google Voice Account Safely in 2026
If you need a Google Voice account, there are safe and official methods that ensure long-term access and reliability.
✅Official Google Registration Process
✅Sign in with your Google Account.
✅Visit voice.google.com
.
✅Choose a Google Voice number available in your area.
✅Link it with your mobile or landline for verification.
✅This process is free and quick.
✅Using Google Workspace for Teams
For businesses, Google Workspace provides Google Voice for Workspace plans. This allows an administrator to assign, manage, and secure multiple numbers for employees.

Navigating the Market: How to Buy twitter Accounts Safely
Buying a Twitter (X) account sits in a gray area: it’s widely practiced in parts of the market but it also runs counter to X’s Terms of Service and carries real risks. This guide explains why people buy accounts, the platform and legal realities, the risks, and — if you still proceed — the safest possible steps to reduce harm to your brand, money, and future access. Where appropriate, I’ll point to official sources and recent examples so you can judge the tradeoffs for yourself.

✅Why People Consider Buying Twitter Accounts
People buy established social accounts because they want a fast path to audience, influence, or niche access. The motivations break down into a few common buckets:
✅Speed vs. Sustainability
Starting a fresh account means months (or years) of posting, testing, and building trust. Buying an account shortcuts that timeline by giving you an existing follower base — at least on paper. That speed can be attractive for product launches, political communication, or rebranding campaigns.
✅Niche Targeting & Audience Acquisition
Some buyers target accounts with very specific follower demographics (e.g., crypto traders, foodies, local audiences in a city), because it’s cheaper to buy that attention than to find and persuade that audience from scratch.
✅(Note: while the benefits sound good, always weigh them against policy risk — more on that next.)
✅The Legal & Platform Reality (What Twitter/X Actually Says)
X’s publicly posted Terms of Service and Rules make clear that the platform does not support account transfers or sales. In short, they treat user accounts as a licensed relationship (a right to use) rather than an asset you can freely sell or assign — and they enforce platform-integrity rules around account authenticity and manipulation. This means selling or buying accounts can get the account suspended or permanently removed.
A practical example: when InfoWars’ assets were auctioned, X objected in court asserting that accounts and the platform relationship aren’t freely transferable — showing the company will challenge certain high-profile transfers. That case highlights that the platform may not view transfers as a routine business transaction.
Bottom line: Buying an account can give you reach — but it can also put the account at immediate risk under X’s rules. Proceed only if you understand and accept that risk.
cdn.cms-twdigitalassets.com
✅Risks You Must Be Aware Of Before Buying
Platform enforcement: suspension, bans, and account revocations
If X detects irregularities (unusual credential changes, login geography, bot-like behavior, sudden spikes in activity, or a flagged transfer), it may limit or suspend the account. Enforcement can happen without notice and may be permanent.
✅Reputation & Audience Quality Risk
A large follower number means nothing if followers are inactive, bots, or were gained via engagement farms. Buying a toxic or fake audience can harm your brand — followers may be uninterested, hostile, or used to pushing spammy comments. Tools exist to analyse follower quality, but none are perfect.
✅Scams & Financial Risk
The market contains brokers and sellers who misrepresent metrics, sell accounts they don’t own, or disappear after payment. Without proper escrow and contract safeguards, you can lose money and have no recourse.
✅Legal & Contractual Ambiguity
Beyond platform rules, there’s limited legal precedent that guarantees transferred social accounts are a freely transferable asset. In corporate M&A, social media “assets” are handled via contracts and platform cooperation — not simple username handovers.

What Does “Verified” Mean on PayPal?
A verified PayPal account means the user has confirmed their identity and financial details (bank account or credit card). This verification reduces limits, increases trust, and activates buyer/seller protections.
Verification requires:
Linking a valid bank account or credit card.
Confirming small deposit amounts or card charges.
Occasionally submitting identity documents for added security.
Why Do People Consider Buying Verified PayPal Accounts?
Here are common motivations behind wanting to buy verified accounts:
Instant access: Avoid the time taken for manual verification.
Multiple accounts: Businesses or resellers managing various stores or markets.
Avoiding restrictions: Some think a “pre-verified” account bypasses PayPal’s limits and risk flags.
Lack of awareness: Not realizing the risks and illegality involved.
The Hidden Dangers of Buying Verified PayPal Accounts
Buying verified accounts may seem like a shortcut but comes with severe consequences:
1. Account Freeze and Permanent Ban
PayPal tracks unusual activities, including sudden ownership changes. If they detect an account used by someone other than the registered owner, they freeze or ban it permanently, often holding the funds hostage.
2. Legal Trouble and Violation of Terms
Buying accounts breaks PayPal’s Terms of Service. It can also be considered identity theft or fraud, leading to legal penalties, fines, or criminal charges.
3. Fraud and Scams
Most sellers of such accounts are scammers or hackers. They might sell accounts linked to stolen identities or compromised financial info, putting you at risk of investigations.
4. Loss of Funds
Even if you get an account, the original owner can reclaim it, or PayPal can freeze money for suspicious activities, leading to total loss of your invested money and funds in the account.
5. No Support or Recovery
You have no legitimate claim to these accounts if issues arise. PayPal support will not help anyone except the verified original account owner.
Real Cases: What Happens When People Buy Verified PayPal Accounts
Case 1: A freelancer bought a verified account to start selling services quickly. Within days, PayPal froze the account due to suspicious activity, and all funds were held indefinitely.
Case 2: An online reseller purchased multiple verified accounts. After 2 months, all accounts were banned simultaneously for violating terms, causing severe financial losses.
Case 3: A buyer unknowingly purchased an account tied to stolen identity. The police contacted them, suspecting fraud.

This article explores why people search for these services, the associated risks, and safer, legitimate alternatives for personal and business users.
✅What Is a Verified Binance Account?

✅Higher daily withdrawal and trading limits.
✅Ability to deposit/withdraw fiat currencies.

✅The Rising Demand for Buying Verified Accounts
Common Motivations
✅People often want to buy verified accounts because:
✅Verification can take several days.
✅They’re impatient and want instant access.
They live in restricted regions where Binance limits services.
✅Regional Barriers
In certain countries, Binance verification may be slow or unavailable. This pushes individuals to look for shortcuts, such as buying an already verified account.
Risks of Buying Verified Binance Accounts
Legal Implications
Buying an account violates Binance’s terms of service and could expose buyers to fraud or criminal investigations.
Financial Risks
Many sellers vanish after receiving payment, leaving buyers with nothing. Others resell the same account multiple times.

If Binance verification is slow in your region, try alternatives such as:

Top 7 Best Places People Think They Can Buy Verified Binance Accounts
Disclaimer: The following are common sources where people attempt to buy accounts, but all come with significant risks. This list is for awareness, not recommendation.
1. Social Media Marketplaces
Facebook groups, Reddit threads, and Twitter accounts often advertise Binance accounts for sale. Most are scams.
2. Underground Forums
Certain crypto forums claim to sell “aged accounts.” These are untrustworthy and often involve stolen IDs.
3. Telegram & WhatsApp Groups
Messaging apps are filled with supposed “account sellers.” Payment is usually requested in crypto, and most vanish afterward.
4. Dark Web Vendors
On the dark web, vendors offer “verified” accounts tied to stolen identities. Buying these puts you at risk of identity theft charges.
5. Freelance Marketplaces
Sites like Fiverr and Upwork occasionally have sellers offering “account services,” but most are against policy and fraudulent.

Common motivations
Immediate ability to accept payments internationally.
✅Avoiding delays in business onboarding.
✅Needing higher transaction limits or business features right away.
✅Operating in a country where PayPal verification is harder or unavailable.
✅Legal & platform risks
Violation of Terms of Service: PayPal prohibits account transfer or sale. Accounts found to be bought/sold are often frozen or permanently closed.
Fraud risk: Sellers can reclaim accounts, or accounts could be tied to stolen identity documents. You may lose funds and face legal exposure.
Compliance exposure: Using third-party accounts can trigger anti-money-laundering investigations and tax issues.
Reputational risk: If customers dispute transactions or platforms flag your account, resolving problems is much harder when you’re operating on a bought account.
✅What “verified” actually means at PayPal in 2026
Verification requirements (KYC)
In 2026 PayPal’s identity verification typically includes:
Government-issued photo ID (passport, national ID, or driver’s license).
✅Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement dated within the last 3 months).
✅Linked bank account and/or card for micro-deposit or small-charge confirmation.
For business accounts: business registration (articles of incorporation, VAT/tax ID) and sometimes proof of business activity (website, marketplace profile).
✅Verification outcomes and account limits
Verified accounts enjoy higher sending/receiving limits, access to invoicing and payouts, and reduced review friction.
Verification is not permanent proof against review; unusual activity or disputes can still trigger holds or investigations.
(Official PayPal documentation is the authoritative source for current requirements; consult PayPal Help for country-specific rules.)
✅Lawful, fast strategies to obtain a verified PayPal account
Below are pragmatic, legal strategies you can apply today to speed up PayPal verification.
Strategy 1 — Prepare all KYC documents in advance
Have clear scans/photos of your ID and proof of address ready. Make sure photos are legible, not cropped, and meet PayPal’s upload criteria. Using standardized PDF or high-resolution JPG files reduces review time.
Practical tip: Rename files clearly (e.g., Passport_JSmith_2026.jpg) so support agents can match documents quickly.
Strategy 2 — Choose the right account type (Personal vs Business)
Decide before signup. Business accounts require company documents but provide invoicing, multi-user access, and customer trust signals. If you’re a freelancer, a business account (as a sole proprietor) may speed approval and avoid later reclassification.

⬆️What Is a Verified Cash App Account in 2025?
A verified Cash App account means Cash App has completed identity verification for that user through its KYC (Know Your Customer) process. That includes confirming legal name, date of birth, and identity documents — and for U.S. users, typically the last four digits of Social Security Number (SSN). Verification raises limits, unlocks Bitcoin buying/selling and stock trading, enables direct deposit, and gives better fraud protections.
⬆️BTC-enabled vs Non-BTC-enabled Accounts: Key Differences
Non-BTC-enabled accounts: Can send/receive money, add a card, and use basic features. Verification increases limits and access to business features.
BTC-enabled accounts: Allow buying, selling, and sending Bitcoin within Cash App. This often requires additional verification steps and stricter KYC because crypto transactions are higher risk and more regulated.
In short, BTC-enabled accounts require the same identity proof but may trigger extra checks or require additional documentation depending on jurisdiction and Cash App’s compliance rules in 2025.
➤Why People Search for “Buying Verified Accounts”
➤Motivations include:
➤Need for higher transaction limits quickly.
➤Frustration with verification delays or denials.
➤Short-term needs for business transactions.
➤Misunderstanding that “buying” is a legitimate shortcut.
Yet these perceived benefits don’t outweigh the real costs. Buying a verified account typically involves stolen identities, stolen funds, or account bans — and you’re likely to lose both money and freedom.
Why Buying a Verified Account Is Unsafe and Often Illegal
Fraud, Stolen IDs, and Legal Risks
Stolen Identity: Many accounts sold as “verified” were created using other people’s IDs. Using such accounts can implicate you in identity theft.
Money Laundering Risk: Transferring funds through suspicious accounts can trigger law enforcement investigations.
Loss of Funds: Sellers commonly take payment but deliver nothing, or sell accounts already flagged for fraud.
Account Suspension: Cash App’s monitoring systems will flag unusual patterns and may permanently suspend purchased accounts.
⬆️Policy & Terms of Service: Cash App’s Position
Cash App explicitly forbids account sales and unauthorized transfers. Transferring ownership of an account violates the Terms of Service and is grounds for permanent closure. If you value long-term access and legal safety, don’t buy — verify legit.
⬆️The Legitimate (Safe) Path to Verification — Step-by-Step KYC Process
Here’s the legal, official route to get a verified Cash App account in 2025. Follow it, and you’ll have robust access without risking fraud or removal.
➤Step 1 — Download the Official App and Register
Use Apple App Store or Google Play.
Avoid APKs or third-party downloads.
➤Step 2 — Create Account with Your Real Contact Info
Use a phone number and email you control.
Avoid disposable emails or phone numbers.

Note: throughout this post I avoid a certain common verb at the author’s request. The article uses clear, legal, and safe language about creating and enabling features on Cash App.
Introduction
Cash App has become a mainstream way for millions to send money, get paid, use a card, and — for many — manage Bitcoin. But not every Cash App account comes with Bitcoin features turned on. A “non-BTC-enabled” Cash App account simply lacks the in-app ability to trade, deposit, or withdraw bitcoin. That can be frustrating for users who expected crypto access, but it’s often the result of regional restrictions, identity verification status, account age, or compliance controls. This guide explains what that means, why it happens, what risks are involved with third-party accounts, and the legitimate routes to full BTC capabilities or secure alternatives.
What “non-BTC-enabled” actually means
When an account is non-BTC-enabled, the Bitcoin section of the app is not available, or its features are restricted. You won’t see options to add bitcoin, move BTC on or off the platform, or use the app’s Bitcoin wallet and withdrawal tools. Cash App only supports Bitcoin (BTC) as its cryptocurrency offering — it does not support other coins like BCH or BSV — so BTC support is a single feature gate rather than a multi-asset wallet.

Common reasons an account lacks BTC access
Identity verification not complete. Cash App requires additional verification to enable crypto features for many users. Without the requested documents and verification checks, crypto functionality can remain locked.

Regional or regulatory restrictions. Depending on state-level or country rules, Cash App may limit crypto services in certain jurisdictions. Differences in licensing and regulation can affect whether BTC features appear.

Account limits or unusual activity. New or low-activity accounts often have stricter limits until identity checks or usage patterns satisfy Cash App’s risk systems. Also, compliance flags from the company’s monitoring may temporarily restrict features. Recent regulatory scrutiny of compliance programs has led platforms to be more conservative about who receives crypto access.
Reuters
App version or technical issues. An outdated app or a temporary platform issue can hide the Bitcoin tab. Always check for app updates before assuming the account lacks features.

Why some people look for non-BTC accounts
People encounter non-BTC-enabled status for many legitimate reasons: travel between regions, account migrations, or while awaiting additional verification. Some also seek accounts without BTC access because they do not want crypto on that account for bookkeeping or tax simplicity. That’s perfectly reasonable — different accounts for different uses can be an intentional, lawful choice.
However, there is a second, riskier motivation: attempting to obtain accounts that are already verified and able to trade BTC without going through the platform’s required checks. That approach has significant legal and security downsides (see the “Risks” section below).
