The erosion of trust in public school systems has had catastrophic consequences, and will take decades to put right. No one celebrates the fallen and discarded because no one wants to admit it could happen to them. But we're all just one misstep away from living an upside-down life while the rest of the world points out all the ways we deserve it.

Where’s your proof? Sometimes you’re convinced that your written statement is true and you believe that you can absolutely know that it’s true, but you haven’t looked at your “proof.” If you really want to know the truth, bring all your evidence into the open and put it to the test of inquiry. Here’s an example: Original statement: I am saddened by Paul because he doesn’t love me. The proof that Paul doesn’t love me: Sometimes he walks by me without speaking. When I enter the room, he doesn’t look up. He doesn’t acknowledge me. He continues to do what he is interested in. He doesn’t call me by name. I ask him to take out the trash, and he pretends not to hear me. I tell him what time dinner is, and sometimes he doesn’t show up. When we do talk, he seems distant, as though he has more important things to do. Investigate each of your “proof of truth” statements, using all four questions and the turnarounds, as in the following example. He sometimes walks by me without speaking. That proves that he doesn’t love me. Is it true? Can I absolutely know that it’s true? Is it possible that he is mentally absorbed in something else? Continue with all four questions and the turnarounds. When I enter the room, he doesn’t look up. That proves that he doesn’t love me. Is it true? Can I absolutely know that it means he doesn’t love me? Continue to test your proof with all four questions and the turnarounds. Test your whole list in this manner, and then return to your original statement: “I’m saddened by Paul because he doesn’t love me”—is it true?

The Turnarounds Finding turnarounds is a very powerful part of The Work. It’s the part where you take what you have written about others and see if it is as true or truer when it applies to you.

As you become fluid with the four questions and turnarounds, you’ll begin to discover for yourself that The Work is equally powerful when the one you’re judging is yourself. You’ll see that the “you” you judge is no more personal than everyone else turned out to be. The Work deals with concepts, not people.

Inquiry: The Four Questions and the Turnarounds Is it true? (Yes or no. If no, move to question 3.) Can you absolutely know that it’s true? (Yes or no.) How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought? Who or what would you be without the thought? And Turn the thought around. Then find examples of how each turnaround is true for you in this situation.

When we started Nalanda in 2007, there was a lot of buzz around a company called Eicher Motors led by a young, dynamic guy called Siddhartha Lal. Lal had inherited a hodgepodge of poor-quality businesses from his father in 2004. They manufactured motorcycles, footwear, garments, tractors, trucks, auto components, and a few other products, and none was an industry leader. In a remarkably bold strategic move, Lal decided to divest thirteen of the fifteen businesses to focus on just two products: trucks and motorcycles.30 Almost every analyst was gung ho about the future of Eicher; they were all taken in by its dynamic leader who was aggressively culling businesses, something that Indian firms rarely did. However, in 2007, this was a turnaround story with no empirical evidence of success. The company’s biggest hit, the Enfield Classic motorcycle, was launched only in 2010. We decided not to invest in the business. By the 2010s, the company’s motorcycles had taken on cult status in the Indian consumer’s mind. Sales exploded from just 52,000 units in 2009 to 822,000 units in 2019: a sixteen-fold growth. If you had listened to what we had to say about the business, you would not have invested. Your opportunity loss? Seventy times your money from 2007 until 2021. Tesla and Eicher Motors are the kinds of type II error we will inevitably commit because we reject highly indebted businesses, rapidly evolving industry landscapes, and turnarounds.
