Kas ir aizsniegti griesti?
Apziņa, ka par zemiem.
Un kas ir noķerts vējš?
Tas, kas par lēnu skrien.
Kas ir sveloša sāpe?
Ziņa, ka nesadzīst.
Un kas ir tavs paša mūžs?
Atzīšanās, ka īss.

Es tevi gribu
Cik labi, ar tevi var neizlikties,
Es tikai ar tevi gribu tikties,
Es gribu, lai tikai tu manī skaties, -
Kad tu manī skaties, es esmu patiess.
Kad tu manī skaties, es esmu patiess,
Mūsu dzīvē vēl simtiem vilcienu aties
Un tūkstošiem jūdžu būs jāiet vēl kājām
Un varbūt bez ūdens, bez sāls un bez mājām.
Bez ceļa, bez ūdens, bez sāls un bez mājām
Man liekas, mēs tūkstošiem jūdžu jau gājām.
Tavs skatiens bij traks, un tavs skatiens bij prātīgs,
Tavs augums kā rudzu maize bij sātīgs.
Tavs augums kā rudzu maize ir sātīgs,
Ta zeme, ko min tavas kājas, man patiks,
Pat sviedriem un asinīm saindēta
Tā zeme, ko min tavas kājas, būs svēta.
Šī zeme, ko min tavas kājas būs svēta.
Balti ķirši un sarkanas rozes zied sētā.
Kā laiku un telpu, un bezgalību
Es tevi gribu.

Two cheers to the wind…” “And three to the women…” “And four to the splendid sea.” The last word trailed off, dissolving into the coarser sounds of glasses knocking against tables, ale splashing onto floor. “Is that really how it goes?” asked Vasry, tipping his head back against the booth. “I thought it was wine, not wind.” “Wouldn’t be a sea shanty without the wind,” said Tav. “Wouldn’t be a shanty without the wine,” countered Vasry, slurring his words.

It was possible to look at actual smartphones and tablets and laptops that had been manufactured on Old Earth. They did not work anymore, but their technical capabilities were described on little placards. And they were impressive compared to what Kath Two and other modern people carried around in their pockets. This ran contrary to most people's intuition, since in other areas the achievements of the modern world - the habitat ring, the Eye, and all the rest - were so vastly greater than what the people of Old Earth had ever accomplished.
It boiled down to Amistics [the choices that different cultures made as to which technologies they would, and would not, make part of their lives]. In the decades before Zero, the Old Earthers had focused their intelligence on the small and the soft, not the big and the hard, and built a civilization that was puny and crumbling where physical infrastructure was concerned, but astonishingly sophisticated when it came to networked communications and software. The density with which they'd been able to pack transistors onto chips still had not been matched by any fabrication plant now in existence. Their devices could hold more data than anything you could buy today. Their ability to communicate through all sorts of wireless schemes was only now being matched - and that only in densely populated, affluent places like the Great Chain...
Anyone who bothered to learn the history of the developed world in the years just before Zero understood perfectly well that Tavistock Prowse had been squarely in the middle of the normal range, as far as his social media habits and attention span had been concerned. But nevertheless, Blues called it Tav's Mistake. They didn't want to make it again. Any efforts made by modern consumer-goods manufacturers to produce the kinds of devices and apps that had disordered the brain of Tav were met with the same instinctive pushback as Victorian clergy might have directed against the inventor of a masturbation machine. To the extent the Blue's engineers could build electronics of comparable sophistication to those that Tav had used, they tended to put them into devices such as robots...

I believe that the human mind is almost infinitely malleable and that people are going to adjust, within days or weeks, to life on the Cloud Ark. We will simply turn into a different civilization altogether from the one we grew up in. Our whole idea of nature will be forgotten. And a thousand years from now, people will go on ‘camping trips’ that will consist of sleeping in arklets, drinking Tang, and peeing into tubes just like their ancestors did.” “To them,” Doob said, “that’ll be a back-to-nature experience.” “I think that’s how we will see it, yes,” Tav said.

Tā jau nu psihologs tevi izvilks no sūdiem jeb pasaules kā tādas. Dziļos sūdos katram jāpeld pašam. Tāda bija mana pieredze. Es nepavisam nenoliedzu, ka dažam labam bija iespējams palīdzēt. Ka gluži daudziem bija. Taču man tikšanās ar savas dzīves sūdiem bija jāatrisina pašai.

I looked back out the door just in time to see one of the men’s heads explode from Rolly’s SAW. “What the fuck!” another one yelled, and then he turned to run back toward us, but was quickly taken out by a headshot that I assumed was from Bailey. The last guy looked at his dead buddies and simply dropped to the ground and cowered. Then his body went limp, and his brains spread out behind him as Bailey landed another headshot. “Oh shit,” Anna laughed. “Guess I forgot about our backup.” “Tav didn’t,” Paige said as she smirked at me. “You could’ve just told us that was your plan,” Tara said with an eye roll as the door shut. “Where’s the drama in that?” I asked with a grin.

Anyone care for a drink?” Rolly asked as he pulled out a bottle of Bulliet bourbon whiskey. It was his favorite drink, and the girls had been nice enough to pick him up a bottle a few days before. “I’ll take a sip,” I said with a nod. I guessed that his willingness to share it with us said a lot about how he felt. I tossed the meat into the skillet along with a handful of morel mushrooms that looked like they had been picked fresh today. Then I accepted the bottle of whiskey and took a sip. The alcohol warmth was a nice way to end the day. I passed it back to the old man. “We should grab a bottle of soda. We worked hard today and can use the calories.” “Plus, I noticed that some of it started to go flat,” Bailey said. “I don’t know about you guys but I would rather drink it while it still has the bubbles.” “At least it still makes a decent mixer when it’s flat,” Tara said with a shrug. “I’ll go grab some kitchenware and soda,” Anna volunteered with a chuckle. “Just don’t eat all of that meat without me. It is starting to smell really good.” The meat sizzled in the pan as one side of it started to sear, and the smell of fresh cooked meat mixed with the wild mushrooms started to fill the air. “Don’t worry, Tav has enough meat for all of us,” Tara teased. “He most certainly does,” Paige agreed as she stared at me with a hungry look in her eyes. “I just want some of that venison,” Rolly said as he shook his head. “You guys have to wait until I go to bed to eat anything else.” “Of course, we aren't animals,” Bailey said. “Speak for yourself,” Paige growled as she shot her friend a wicked grin.

Man, that smells good,” Paige said. “What did you make?” “Eggs, venison bacon, and hoe cakes,” Betty said. “I’m sorry,” Tara snickered. “Did you say hoe cakes?” “Yes,” Betty laughed. “They’re very popular in the south.” “They’re called hoe cakes because they were cooked on an iron pan that was called a hoe,” Paige explained. “I wonder what it did to deserve that,” Tara laughed. “Paige is right,” Betty chuckled. “Though the name is humorous.” Betty dished each of us a plate, and I dug in with a vengeance. Typically I wasn’t extremely hungry before a mission, but the smell of that venison bacon had made my mouth water, and I groaned when it hit my tongue. The eggs were fluffy and well seasoned, and the hoe cakes were savory and sweet. “This is delicious,” I said through bites. “Thank you,” Betty chuckled. “I’m glad you like it.” “We all already knew Tav liked hoes,” Anna said with a pointed look at Tara. “Hey!” Tara laughed and hit the redhead on the arm. “I do like the hoes,” I chuckled as I took another bite. “That sounded so wrong,” Paige said seriously, but then her expression cracked, and she broke into a laugh.

Kur tu esi, mans draugs?... Vai tai blāzmā, kas kūst
Man no vientuļā mākoņa sejā?...

For two thousand years prior to the creation of the world, all the letters of the Hebrew alphabet were hidden. During that time, God gazed upon the letters and delighted in them. Then, when God was about to create the world, all twenty-two letters engraved upon His crown came down and stood before him, from tav to aleph. The letter tav approached first and said: "O Lord, create the world through me, for I am at the beginning of the word 'Torah.'"
God replied, "Tav, You are worthy and deserving, and in the days to come I shall command that you be put as a sign on the foreheads of the righteous, so that when the destroying angel comes to punish sinners, he will see the letter on their foreheads and spare them." But the letter tav was sad that it would not be used to create the world, and it left the presence of the Lord.
Then, one by one, each of the other letters came forward and pleaded with God to create the world through them.

Kādi mēs esam, esam nesamaināmi, mūsu attiecības vienreizīgas, tās izaugušas no dziļas iekšējas nepieciešamības, ko pazīst tikai liela vēriena mīlētāji. Es pie Tevis apstājos neatkarīgi no ārējiem apstākļiem, es Tevi apskāvu briesmīgā izmisumā, lielā drebēšanā, jo aiz manis un manī pletās pirmatnējs tukšums, tas neizsakāmais baigums, ko pazinis Muhs, gleznojot savu Alfu, ko pazinis Bodlērs, ko pazinis Gogolis, ko pazinis van Gogs, ko pazinuši visi, kas ieskatījušies dzīves ''ārkārtīgajā mistērijā'', kā teicis Karduči - tas tukšums, ko varēja manī klusināt, pildīt un mierināt tikai Tava esme, Tavs liktenis. Tādēļ meklēt mūsu attiecībām tikai ārējos apstākļos izskaidrojumus būtu pārāk nožēlojami. (..)
Ak, es Tev esmu ļāvis ieiet savā dvēselē, ļāvis to padarīt par Tavu pastāvīgu mītni, tur Tu esi vienmēr un katrā brīdī, dienā un naktī. Lai es darītu ko darīdams, lai es ietu kur iedams, viss tas būtu darīts tikai manas būtības ārdurvē. (..) Mana lielā drāma, mana nebeidzamā traģēdija, mana dziļā ''komēdija'' esi Tu. Es Tevi apzinos katrā savā dvēseles dziļākā rosmē, es Tevi jūtu vidziļākā sapnī. (..) Tiec ar to galā.
Proti?
Kā pret princesi. Mūsdienu princesi.

Tav,” Anna laughed. “What?” I asked. “Are you drinking bourbon from a teacup?” the redhead chuckled. “I guess I am,” I said and I raised my pinky and took another drink.

Black and female and a siren is just layers upon layers of trauma. Tav’s so good at breaking it down, but she rarely does unless it’s just her and me.
One time I said she’s too young to deal with this, and she said we don’t get to be.

Memphis can be thought of connected as much to Mississippi and Arkansas as it is to Tennessee, if not more so. William Faulkner once observed that Mississippi extends from a Memphis hotel room to the Gulf of Mexico.
