In short, Europe’s colonization of Africa had nothing to do with differences between European and African peoples themselves, as white racists assume. Rather, it was due to accidents of geography and biogeography—in particular, to the continents’ different areas, axes, and suites of wild plant and animal species. That is, the different historical trajectories of Africa and Europe stem ultimately from differences in real estate.

For hours, they wrote back and forth, a conversation punctuated by short periods of waiting, where Lucy held her breath and kept watch over her phone, resenting the constraints of technology, the limits of distance.

Columbus's real achievement was managing to cross the ocean successfully in both directions. Though an accomplished enough mariner, he was not terribly good at a great deal else, especially geography, the skill that would seem most vital in an explorer. It would be hard to name any figure in history who has achieved more lasting fame with less competence. He spent large parts of eight years bouncing around Caribbean islands and coastal South America convinced that he was in the heart of the Orient and that Japan and China were at the edge of every sunset. He never worked out that Cuba is an island and never once set foot on, or even suspected the existence of, the landmass to the north that everyone thinks he discovered: the United States.

I just want to know...if I am special,’ finished September, halfway between a whisper and a squeak. ‘In stories, when someone appears in a poof of green clouds and asks a girl to go away on an adventure, it’s because she’s special, because she’s smart and strong and can solve riddles and fight with swords and give really good speeches, and . . . I don’t know that I’m any of those things. I don’t even know that I’m as ill-tempered as all that. I’m not dull or anything, I know about geography and chess, and I can fix the boiler when my mother has to work. But what I mean to say is: Maybe you meant to go to another girl’s house and let her ride on the Leopard. Maybe you didn’t mean to choose me at all, because I’m not like storybook girls. I’m short and my father ran away with the army and I wouldn’t even be able to keep a dog from eating a bird.

It is frequently the tragedy of the great artist, as it is of the great scientist, that he frightens the ordinary man. If he is more than a popular story-teller it may take humanity a generation to absorb and grow accustomed to the new geography with which the scientist or artist presents us.... In short, like the herd animals we are, we sniff warily at the strange one among us. If he is fortunate enough finally to be accepted, it is likely to be after a trial of ridicule and after the sting has been removed from his work by long familiarization and bowdlerizing, when the alien quality of his thought has been mitigated or removed.

Why is it then that Westerners rely so much more heavily on personality traits in explaining behavior? The answer seems to be that Easterners are more likely to notice important situational factors and to realize that they play a role in producing behavior. As a consequence, East Asians are less susceptible to what social psychologist Lee Ross labeled the “Fundamental Attribution Error” (or FAE for short).

The moon fled eastward like a frightened dove, while the stars changed their places in the heavens, like a disbanding army. 'Where are we?' asked Gil Gil. 'In France,' responded the Angel of Death. 'We have now traversed a large portion of the two bellicose nations which waged so sanguinary a war with each other at the beginning of the present century. We have seen the theater of the War of Succession. Conquered and conquerors both lie sleeping at this instant. My apprentice, Sleep, rules over the heroes who did not perish then, in battle, or afterward of sickness or of old age. I do not understand why it is that below on earth all men are not friends? The identity of your misfortunes and your weaknesses, the need you have of each other, the shortness of your life, the spectacle of the grandeur of other worlds, and the comparison between them and your littleness, all this should combine to unite you in brotherhood, like the passengers of a vessel threatened with shipwreck. There, there is neither love, nor hate, nor ambition, no one is debtor or creditor, no one is great or little, no one is handsome or ugly, no one is happy or unfortunate. The same danger surrounds all and my presence makes all equal. Well, then, what is the earth, seen from this height, but a ship which is foundering, a city delivered up to an epidemic or a conflagration?' 'What are those ignes fatui which I can see shining in certain places on the terrestrial globe, ever since the moon veiled her light?' asked the young man. 'They are cemeteries. We are now above Paris. Side by side with every city, every town, every village of the living there is always a city, a town, or a village of the dead, as the shadow is always beside the body. Geography, then, is of two kinds, although mortals only speak of the kind which is agreeable to them. A map of all the cemeteries which there are on the earth would be sufficient indication of the political geography of your world. You would miscalculate, however, in regard to the population; the dead cities are much more densely populated than the living; in the latter there are hardly three generations at one time, while, in the former, hundreds of generations are often crowded together. As for the lights you see shining, they are phosphorescent gleams from dead bodies, or rather they are the expiring gleams of thousands of vanished lives; they are the twilight glow of love, ambition, anger, genius, mercy; they are, in short, the last glow of a dying light, of the individuality which is disappearing, of the being yielding back his elements to mother earth. They are - and now it is that I have found the true word - the foam made by the river when it mingles its waters with those of the ocean.' The Angel of Death paused. ("The Friend of Death")
Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (Ghostly By Gaslight)
I'm afraid they're not very well-designed creatures, dragons." Vimes listened. "They would never have survived at all except that their home swamps were isolated and short of predators. Not that a dragon made good eating, anyway-once you'd taken away the leathery skin and the enormous flight muscles, what was left must have been like biting into a badly-run chemical factory. No wonder dragons were always ill. They relied on permanent stomach trouble for supplies of fuel. Most of their brain power was taken up with controlling the complexities of then-digestion, which could distill flame-producing fuels from the most unlikely ingredients. They could even rearrange their internal plumbing overnight to deal with difficult processes. They lived on a chemical knife-edge the whole time. One misplaced hiccup and they were geography. And when it came to choosing nesting sites, the females had all the common sense and mothering instinct of a brick." Vimes wondered why people had been so worried about dragons in the olden days. If there was one in a cave near you, all you had to do was wait until it self-ignited, blew itself up, or died of acute indigestion.

Russia is the biggest country in the world, twice the size of the USA or China, five times the size of India, seventy times the size of the UK. However, it has a relatively small population of about 144 million, fewer people than Nigeria or Pakistan. Its agricultural growing season is short and it struggles to adequately distribute what is grown around the eleven time zones which Moscow governs.

I fell in love with my country because of the stories my grandfather told me and because of our travels together through the south. He taught me history and geography, showed me maps, made me read Chilean writers, corrected my grammar and handwriting. As a teacher, he was short on patience but long on severity; my errors made him red with anger, but if he was content with my work he would reward me with a wedge of Camembert cheese,

The story always starts in the same way when people ask me the simple, yet most difficult question to answer: “where are you from?” I often wonder why of all questions people start with this one that has become the hardest for me and countless other exiled people to answer. The question is especially hard when asked in crowded and fast-paced places, or during quick encounters which make a short answer inadequate and a long one potentially uncalled for…I thought to myself: why is it that the first thing people want to know about me is where I am from? If they only knew where I am from, they would perhaps know that where I am from—Iraq—happens to also be the deepest wound on the geography of my body and soul, and so they would tread gently on my wound by not asking that question in the first place. Is there something in my eyes, something written on my forehead, something in my looks, or some marks inscribed on my other body parts that immediately tell people that I am from a place that lost itself and lost me to exile on a cold, dark, and sad winter night? Why don’t these strangers just start with the more common and safer usual remarks about the weather being nice, dreadful, or whatever? Of all questions, “where are you from,” is the most delicate and complicated for people who have lost their home and all the things they loved.

Before the advent of Islam, the Arab peoples constituted a cultural backwater. With the exception of poetry, they contributed virtually nothing to world civilization, unlike their neighbors—the Egyptians, the Sumerians, the Babylonians, the Persians. Islam changed all that. Shortly after its advent, the Arabs excelled in fields from astronomy to medicine to philosophy. The Muslim golden age stretched from Morocco to Persia and spanned many centuries. Likewise,

I had never been to the Amazon, my jungle experience had mostly come from Central America with some short trips to Borneo, but the Amazon undoubtedly had a mystique all of its own. Surely the trees would be much bigger, the wildlife had to be much richer and more diverse and the people would be that bit wilder and cut off from the outside world. It gave me butterflies to think of spending time in the Amazon. Not knowing the geography of the area in any detail, my dreams were restricted to what I did know. There was a ruddy great river that virtually crossed the whole continent from west to east, and…that was about it. I had heard of expeditions that had kayaked the entire river from source to sea – phenomenal endurance feats taking five-plus months – the problem was I was a rubbish kayaker. Sure, I’d done a bit on the canals in England as a Cub Scout but that cold, depressing experience had been enough to put me off for life. What a dull, miserable sport, instructed by overenthusiastic dickheads in stupid helmets.

The Americans, exhausted by their losses, could get Iran to do some of the fighting against ISIS in Iraq. Tehran knew that agreeing to the nuclear deal would open the door to discreet co-operation with the Americans; President Obama desperately wanted a foreign-policy success – and the nuclear deal could provide it. So Iran agreed to give up 98 per cent of its highly enriched uranium. It was an example of how a marriage of convenience to solve a short-term problem can override deeper differences – temporarily.

Until now China has never been a naval power – with its large land mass, multiple borders and short sea routes to trading partners, it had no need to be, and it was rarely ideologically expansive. Its merchants have long sailed the oceans to trade goods, but its navy did not seek territory beyond its region, and the difficulty of patrolling the great sea lanes of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans was not worth the effort. It was always a land power, with a lot of land and a lot of people – now nearly 1.4 billion.

If you didn’t find some way of stopping it, people would go on asking questions. The teachers were useful there. Bands of them wandered through the mountains, along with the tinkers, portable blacksmiths, miracle medicine men, cloth peddlers, fortune-tellers, and all the other travelers who sold things the people didn’t need every day but occasionally found useful. They went from village to village delivering short lessons on many subjects. They kept apart from the other travelers and were quite mysterious in their ragged robes and strange square hats. They used long words, like corrugated iron. They lived rough lives, surviving on what food they could earn from giving lessons to anyone who would listen. When no one would listen, they lived on baked hedgehog. They went to sleep under the stars, which the math teachers would count, the astronomy teachers would measure, and the literature teachers would name. The geography teachers got lost in the woodsand fell into bear traps. People were usually quite pleased to see them. They taught children enough to shut them up, which was the main thing, after all. But they always had to be driven out of the villages by nightfall in case they stole chickens.

Having spent 4,000 turbulent years consolidating its land mass, China is now building a Blue Water navy. A Green Water navy patrols its maritime borders, a Blue Water navy patrols the oceans. It will take another thirty years (assuming economic progression) for China to build naval capacity to seriously challenge the most powerful seaborne force the world has ever seen – the US navy. But in the medium to short term, as it builds, and trains, and learns, the Chinese navy will bump up against its rivals on the seas; and how those bumps are managed – especially the Sino–American ones – will define great power politics in this century.

Literature before the Renaissance had frequently offered ideal patterns for living which were dominated by the ethos of the church, but after the Reformation the search for individual expression and meaning took over. Institutions were questioned and re-evaluated, often while being praised at the same time. But where there had been conventional modes of expression, reflecting ideal modes of behaviour - religious, heroic, or social - Renaissance writing explored the geography of the human soul, redefining its relationship with authority, history, science, and the future. This involved experimentation with form and genre, and an enormous variety of linguistic and literary innovations in a short period of time. Reason, rather than religion, was the driving force in this search for rules to govern human behaviour in the Renaissance world. The power and mystique of religion had been overthrown in one bold stroke: where the marvellous no longer holds sway, real life has to provide explanations. Man, and the use he makes of his powers, capabilities, and free will, is thus the subject matter of Renaissance literature, from the early sonnets modelled on Petrarch to the English epic which closes the period, Paradise Lost, published after the Restoration, when the Renaissance had long finished. The Reformation gave cultural, philosophical, and ideological impetus to English Renaissance writing. The writers in the century following the Reformation had to explore and redefine all the concerns of humanity. In a world where old assumptions were no longer valid, where scientific discoveries questioned age-old hypotheses, and where man rather than God was the central interest, it was the writers who reflected and attempted to respond to the disintegration of former certainties. For it is when the universe is out of control that it is at its most frightening - and its most stimulating. There would never again be such an atmosphere of creative tension in the country. What was created was a language, a literature, and a national and international identity.

In Europe, the dimensions of physical space seemed compressed. The looming vertical presence of mountains cut me off from the horizon. I'd not lived with that kind of spatial curtailment before. Even a city of skyscrapers is more porous than a snowcapped range. Alps form a solid barrier, an obstacle every bit as conceptual as visual and physical. Alpine bluffs and crags just don't rear up, they lean outwards, projecting their mass, and their solidity does not relent. For a West Australian like me, whose default setting is in diametric opposition, and for whom space is the impinging force, the effect is claustrophobic. I think I was constantly and instinctively searching for distances that were unavailable, measuring space and coming up short.

short buzz followed, then silence. “They want to get rid of us,” said Trillian nervously. “What do we do?” “It’s just a recording,” said Zaphod. “We keep going. Got that, computer?” “I got it,” said the computer and gave the ship an extra kick of speed. They waited. After a second or so came the fanfare once again, and then the voice. “We would like to assure you that as soon as our business is resumed announcements will be made in all fashionable magazines and color supplements, when our clients will once again be able to select from all that’s best in contemporary geography.” The menace in the voice took on a sharper edge. “Meanwhile, we thank our clients for their kind interest and would ask them to leave. Now.” Arthur looked round the nervous faces of his companions. “Well, I suppose we’d better be going then, hadn’t we?” he suggested. “Shhh!” said Zaphod. “There’s absolutely nothing to be worried about.” “Then why’s everyone so tense?” “They’re just interested!” shouted Zaphod. “Computer, start a descent into the atmosphere and prepare for landing.” This time the fanfare was quite perfunctory, the voice now distinctly cold. “It is most gratifying,” it said, “that your enthusiasm for our planet continues unabated, and so we would like to assure you that the guided missiles currently converging with your ship are part of a special service we extend to all of our most enthusiastic clients, and the fully armed nuclear warheads are of course merely a courtesy detail. We look forward to your custom in future lives…. Thank you.

How this complicated mosaic of [citizenship] statuses [among those who came under Roman control] had originated is again hard to know. Roman writers of the first century BCE, followed by modern legal scholars, tended to treat them as part of a highly technical, carefully calibrated system of civic rights and responsibilities. But that is almost certainly the product of later legal rationalisation. It is inconceivable that the men of the fourth century BCE sat down to debate the precise implications of civitas sine suffragio or the exact privileges that went with belonging to a 'Latin' colony. Much more likely, they were improvising their new relationships with different peoples in the outside world by using, and adjusting, their existing, rudimentary categories of citizenship and ethnicity. The implications, however, were again revolutionary. In extending citizenship to people who had no direct territorial connections with the city of Rome, they broke the link, which most people in the classical world took for granted, between citizenship and a single city. In a systematic way that was then unparalleled, they made it possible not just to become Roman but also to be a citizen of two places at once: one's home town and Rome. And in creating new Latin colonies all over Italy, they redefined the word 'Latin' so that it was no longer an ethnic identity but a political status unrelated to race or geography. This set the stage for a model of citizenship and 'belonging' that had enormous significance for Roman ideas of government, political rights, ethnicity and 'nationhood'. This model was shortly extended overseas and eventually underpinned the Roman Empire.

What a joy this book is! I love recipe books, but it’s short-lived; I enjoy the pictures for several minutes, read a few pages, and then my eyes glaze over. They are basically books to be used in the kitchen for one recipe at a time. This book, however, is in a different class altogether and designed to be read in its entirety. It’s in its own sui generis category; it has recipes at the end of most of the twenty-one chapters, but it’s a book to be read from cover to cover, yet it could easily be read chapter by chapter, in any order, as they are all self-contained. Every bite-sized chapter is a flowing narrative from a well-stocked brain encompassing Balinese culture, geography and history, while not losing its main focus: food. As you would expect from a scholar with a PhD in history from Columbia University, the subject matter has been meticulously researched, not from books and articles and other people’s work, but from actually being on the ground and in the markets and in the kitchens of Balinese families, where the Balinese themselves learn their culinary skills, hands on, passed down orally, manually and practically from generation to generation. Vivienne Kruger has lived in Bali long enough to get it right. That’s no mean feat, as the subject has not been fully studied before. Yes, there are so-called Balinese recipe books, most, if I’m not mistaken, written by foreigners, and heavily adapted. The dishes have not, until now, been systematically placed in their proper cultural context, which is extremely important for the Balinese, nor has there been any examination of the numerous varieties of each type of recipe, nor have they been given their true Balinese names. This groundbreaking book is a pleasure to read, not just for its fascinating content, which I learnt a lot from, but for the exuberance, enthusiasm and originality of the language. There’s not a dull sentence in the book. You just can’t wait to read the next phrase. There are eye-opening and jaw-dropping passages for the general reader as Kruger describes delicacies from the village of Tengkudak in Tabanan district — grasshoppers, dragonflies, eels and live baby bees — and explains how they are caught and cooked. She does not shy away from controversial subjects, such as eating dog and turtle. Parts of it are not for the faint-hearted, but other parts make you want to go out and join the participants, such as the Nusa Lembongan fishermen, who sail their outriggers at 5.30 a.m. The author quotes Miguel Covarrubias, the great Mexican observer of the 1930s, who wrote “The Island of Bali.” It has inspired all writers since, including myself and my co-author, Ni Wayan Murni, in our book “Secrets of Bali, Fresh Light on the Morning of the World.” There is, however, no bibliography, which I found strange at first. I can only imagine it’s a reflection of how original the subject matter is; there simply are no other sources. Throughout the book Kruger mentions Balinese and Indonesian words and sometimes discusses their derivations. It’s a Herculean task. I was intrigued to read that “satay” comes from the Tamil word for flesh ( sathai ) and that South Indians brought satay to Southeast Asia before Indonesia developed its own tradition. The book is full of interesting tidbits like this. The book contains 47 recipes in all, 11 of which came from Murni’s own restaurant, Murni’s Warung, in Ubud. Mr Dolphin of Warung Dolphin in Lovina also contributed a number of recipes. Kruger adds an introduction to each recipe, with a detailed and usually very personal commentary. I think my favorite, though, is from a village priest (pemangku), I Made Arnila of the Ganesha (Siwa) Temple in Lovina. water. I am sure most will enjoy this book enormously; I certainly did.” Review published in The Jakarta Globe, April 17, 2014. The visible present is not in time and space, nor, of course, outside of them: there is nothing before it, after it, about it, that could compete with its visibility. And yet it is not alone, it is not everything. To put it precisely, it stops up my view, that is, time and space extend beyond the visible present, and at the same time they are behind it, in depth, in hiding. The visible can thus fill me and occupy me only because I who see it do not see it from the depths of nothingness, but from the midst of itself; I the seer am also visible. What makes the weight, the thickness, the flesh of each color, of each sound, of each tactile texture, of the present, and of the world is the fact that he who grasps them feels himself emerge from them by a sort of coiling up or redoubling, fundamentally homogeneous with them; he feels that he is the sensible itself coming to itself and that in return the sensible is in his eyes as it were his double or an extension of his own flesh. The space, the time of the things are shreds of himself, of his own spatialization, of his own temporalization, are no longer a multiplicity of individuals synchronically and diachronically distributed, but a relief of the simultaneous and of the successive, a spatial and temporal pulp where the individuals are formed by differentiation. The things—here, there, now, then—are no longer in themselves, in their own place, in their own time; they exist only at the end of those rays of spatiality and of temporality emitted in the secrecy of my flesh. And their solidity is not that of a pure object which the mind soars over; I experience their solidity from within insofar as I am among them and insofar as they communicate through me as a sentient thing. Like the memory screen of the psychoanalysts, the present, the visible counts so much for me and has an absolute prestige for me only by reason of this immense latent content of the past, the future, and the elsewhere, which it announces and which it conceals. There is therefore no need to add to the multiplicity of spatio-temporal atoms a transversal dimension of essences—what there is is a whole architecture, a whole complex of phenomena "in tiers," a whole series of "levels of being," which are differentiated by the coiling up of the visible and the universal over a certain visible wherein it is redoubled and inscribed. Fact and essence can no longer be distinguished, not because, mixed up in our experience, they in their purity would be inaccessible and would subsist as limit-ideas beyond our experience, but because—Being no longer being before me, but surrounding me and in a sense traversing me, and my vision of Being not forming itself from elsewhere, but from the midst of Being—the alleged facts, the spatio-temporal individuals, are from the first mounted on the axes, the pivots, the dimensions, the generality of my body, and the ideas are therefore already encrusted in its joints. There is no emplacement of space and time that would not be a variant of the others, as they are of it; there is no individual that would not be representative of a species or of a family of beings, would not have, would not be a certain style, a certain manner of managing the domain of space and time over which it has competency, of pronouncing, of articulating that domain, of radiating about a wholly virtual center—in short, a certain manner of being, in the active sense, a certain Wesen, in the sense that, says Heidegger, this word has when it is used as a verb. In short, there is no essence, no idea, that does not adhere to a domain of history and of geography. Not that it is confined there and inaccessible for the others, but because, like that of nature, the space or time of culture is not surveyable from above, and because the communication from one constituted culture to another occurs through the wild region wherein they all have originated.
Maurice Merleau-Ponty (The Visible and the Invisible (Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy))
A ewe usually is a good mother, but she will turn bad if for some reason she is separated from her lamb shortly after birth. Then she is likely to reject the lamb, refusing to nurse it. Sheep farmers have a way of persuading her otherwise. They stimulate her vagina with a kind of sheep dildo. The tickling releases a stream of oxytocin in her brain, and she then takes the lamb to udder. An oxytocin pump in her spinal cord will have the same maternogenic impact.
Natalie Angier (Woman: An Intimate Geography)
Of the early founders, the most eminent proponent of physical geography as a scientific entity was undoubtedly the German polymath Alexander von Humboldt. On his many travels, he combined observations with measurements of temperature, pressure, and the Earth’s magnetic field, and made generalizations about the geographical distribution of vegetation, global-scale patterns of temperature (depicted by isotherms on maps), the ways in which temperature falls and vegetation varies with increasing altitude (on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, for example), the alignment of volcanoes, and the course of ocean currents. In his major works, written around the middle of the 19th century, such as Cosmos: A Sketch of a Physical Description of the Universe , published in 1849, he emphasized not only relationships within the natural geo-ecosphere but also linkages to human societies. A year earlier, Mary Somerville, based at the University of Oxford, published Physical Geography and defined the subject as ‘a description of the Earth, the sea and the air, with their inhabitants animal and vegetable, of the distribution of these organized beings and the causes of that distribution’.
John A. Matthews (Geography: A Very Short Introduction)
The Geographical Experiment gave geography the chance to establish itself as a university discipline. The breadth of its terms of reference was both a strength and a weakness. The strength was that it included nature and culture and their relationship, a concept no other discipline had claimed. This breadth remains a contested topic in modern geography despite the opportunities it presents of ever-increasing relevance. The weakness is the spread of interest over such a wide field and an ‘anything goes’ mentality. This weakness becomes most apparent when different parts of the discipline relate to different intellectual traditions. The touching points then become very few or non-existent. It is fair to say that most physical geography today is evolving within the research framework of the natural and mathematical sciences, whereas most human geography draws upon and interrelates with the traditions of the humanities and social studies. It is possible to recognize a definite lacuna in which physical and human geography interact, but for many this is a minority interest.
John A. Matthews (Geography: A Very Short Introduction)
Within the practice of contemporary geography, many traditional components such as maps are still important, though satellite remote sensing, sometimes known as Earth Observation (EO), Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and other powerful quantitative methods have been added to traditional fieldwork and the comparative method. Established core concepts of space and place have been transformed, in human geography at least, by modern social and cultural theory. The need to understand the biophysical and human environments of people and their interactions is becoming increasingly urgent as issues of sustainability and the protection and preservation of planet Earth become imperative. As integration within geography as a whole has weakened, both physical and human geography have become more specialized and have adopted different approaches to many of their research problems. Most importantly, physical geography is asserting its scientific credentials, while human geography emphasizes critical theory, values, and ethics.
John A. Matthews (Geography: A Very Short Introduction)
Geography is an academic discipline and subject of study that explores – and promotes critical thinking about – how the world is organized, the environments and patterns that exist on the ground or that humans create in their minds, the interconnections that exist between the physical and human environment, and the nature of places and regions. Geography, in short, offers a critically important window into the diverse nature and character of the planet that serves as humanity’s home.
Alexander B. Murphy (Geography: Why It Matters)
What the poor as well as the rich require is not to be indoctrinated, is not to be taught other people’s opinions, but to be induced and enabled to think for themselves. It is not physical science that will do this, even if they could learn it much more thoroughly than they are able to do. After reading, writing, and arithmetic (the last a most important discipline in habits of accuracy and precision, in which they are extremely deficient), the desirable thing for them seems to be the most miscellaneous information, and the most varied exercise of their faculties. They cannot read too much. Quantity is of more importance than quality, especially all reading which relates to human life and the ways of mankind; geography, voyages and travels, manners and customs, and romances, which must tend to awaken their imagination and give them some of the meaning of self-devotion and heroism, in short, to unbrutalise them.
John Stuart Mill (The Letters of John Stuart Mill, Vol 1)
The ‘quantitative revolution’ in geography required the discipline to adopt an explicitly scientific approach, including numerical and statistical methods, and mathematical modelling, so ‘numeracy’ became another necessary skill. Its immediate impact was greatest on human geography as physical geographers were already using these methods. A new lexicon encompassing the language of statistics and its array of techniques entered geography as a whole. Terms such as random sampling, correlation, regression, tests of statistical significance, probability, multivariate analysis, and simulation became part both of research and undergraduate teaching. Correlation and regression are procedures to measure the strength and form, respectively, of the relationships between two or more sets of variables. Significance tests measure the confidence that can be placed in those relationships. Multivariate methods enable the analysis of many variables or factors simultaneously – an appropriate approach for many complex geographical data sets. Simulation is often linked to probability and is a set of techniques capable of extrapolating or projecting future trends.
John A. Matthews (Geography: A Very Short Introduction)
According to Robert Menzies, Morrison deserves the social and economic advantages provided by geography, education and nepotism: "To say the industrious and intelligent son of self-sacrificing and saving and forward-looking parents has the same social deserts and even material needs as the dull offspring of stupid and improvident parents is absurd." The short shrift: eat shit, serfs! This moral justification for poverty is a central pillar of Morrison's political beliefs and and Pentecostalism. The problem is that it deeply contradicts Australia's self-mythology about being a bastion of the fair go. So Scott John Morrison - a tall poppy from the eastern suburbs - needed to reinvent himself as ScoMo, a top bloke from the Sutherland Shire who loves rugby league. In doing so, he plagiarised the nickname and personal hobby of Anthony "Albo" Albanese.
Lech Blaine (Top Blokes: The Larrikin Myth, Class and Power (Quarterly Essay #83))
No one has time for this, of course. No one has time to lie on the deck watching stars, or to wonder how one’s hand came to be, or to see the soul of a stranger walking by. Small wonder we are short on reverence.
Barbara Brown Taylor (An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith)
When a manager has a criminal record or a history of cheating investors or even just feels above the law, I stop right there. Crooks don’t suddenly sprout a sense of fiduciary duty. When a piece of evidence might or might not tag a bad guy, I use it only if it hints at other investment defects. Glamorous hype stocks are more likely to be scams, but I avoid them because they are usually overpriced and prone to raising capital constantly. Intricate corporate structures make analysis difficult, even if nothing bad is going on. To spot bad guys, look for the fraud triangle: pressure, opportunity, and rationalization. Philosopher Hannah Arendt had it right that “most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.” Watch for when massive option grants or hefty fees compel people to try too hard. Pride can be a dominant motive when an audience believes in someone’s magical powers. Charismatic promoters often suppress the boards of directors, auditors, and other naysayers that might prevent them from doing what they want. They cluster in industries and geographies where capital is abundantly available with little scrutiny or accountability. Lax accounting standards are also a draw. Don’t buy anything someone is pushing hard. By avoiding the bad-guy stocks—and it’s a short list—I slash the possibility of a disastrous outcome but scarcely reduce my opportunity set.

Every raw-milk cheese is an artifact of the land; it carries the imprint of the earth from which it came. A cheese—even a fresh chèvre—is never just a thing to put in your mouth. It’s a living piece of geography. A sense of place.

As a plumber in San Diego Hometown Plumbing, one would likely have extensive knowledge and experience in plumbing systems for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings in the San Diego area. This would include expertise in the installation, repair, and maintenance of pipes, water heaters, faucets, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures. San Diego plumbers would also be familiar with the unique challenges posed by the city's geography, such as the need for earthquake-resistant piping and water conservation measures due to the region's semi-arid climate. They may also be required to comply with local building codes and regulations, ensuring that plumbing systems are safe and up to code. In short, a plumber in San Diego would play a critical role in ensuring that homes and businesses in the area have access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services.

1)Insufficient research and knowledge: Many beginners dive into investing without fully understanding the fundamentals or conducting thorough research. It's crucial to educate yourself about different investment options, financial markets, and investment strategies before getting started. 2)Failure to establish clear investment goals: Investing without clear goals can lead to haphazard decision-making and poor portfolio management. Beginners should define their investment objectives, such as saving for retirement, buying a home, or funding education, and then align their investment strategy accordingly. 3)Lack of diversification: Beginners sometimes make the mistake of investing all their money in a single investment or asset class. This lack of diversification can expose them to significant risks. It's important to spread investments across different asset classes, industries, and geographies to reduce the impact of any individual investment's performance on the overall portfolio. 4)Emotion-driven decision-making: Emotions can often cloud investment decisions. Beginners may get swayed by market hype, fear, or short-term fluctuations, leading to impulsive buying or selling. It's essential to make investment decisions based on rational analysis and a long-term perspective rather than reacting to short-term market movements. 5)Chasing quick profits: Beginner investors may be tempted by get-rich-quick schemes or investments promising high returns in a short period. Such investments often involve higher risks, and pursuing quick profits can lead to significant losses. It's important to have realistic return expectations and focus on long-term, sustainable investment strategies.

Samir loves Joe’s face. He studies it every day in class: a face as old as his own but already, in eighteen years, the cliffs and hills and odd proportions of its geography have been shaped by life’s weather. Samir likes to observe the ever-watchful green eyes, hidden in their shadowy alcoves over the at nose and cheekbones, and the heavy brow that scrunches up with Joe’s moods – all those sculptural planes could have been carved by Easter Islanders. en there’s the pout of his lips, the pucker of their concentration or the twist of their anger. But most of all, Samir examines the thoughts as they cross the wide-open landscape of the face. Tries hard to read their cloud shapes from the merest shadow.

Before I proceed further with what I said to Caroline and what Caroline said to me, it might be as well to give some idea of what I should describe as our local geography. Our village, King’s Abbot, is, I imagine, very much like any other village. Our big town is Cranchester, nine miles away.

It now seems probable that the Krishna statue was erected at the place which was revered as the site of the founding Khmer myth: the place where the newly arrived Indian Brahmin Kaundinya was believed to have met and married local Mera the naga princess (we will hear more of this myth shortly). By erecting a major temple there to Lord Krishna, ‘Phnom Da becomes a new Mount Govardhan, and probably, by extension, the Mekong River becomes the holy river Yamuna,’ thereby ritually extending the sacred geography of India to South-east Asia.

Navigating the Market: How to Buy twitter Accounts Safely Buying a Twitter (X) account sits in a gray area: it’s widely practiced in parts of the market but it also runs counter to X’s Terms of Service and carries real risks. This guide explains why people buy accounts, the platform and legal realities, the risks, and — if you still proceed — the safest possible steps to reduce harm to your brand, money, and future access. Where appropriate, I’ll point to official sources and recent examples so you can judge the tradeoffs for yourself. ●⭐●✦ 24/7 Customer Support ⭐●✦● Telegram: @smmusazone ⭐●✦● WhatsApp: +1 (850) 247-7643 ●✦⭐●✦●⭐●✦⭐●✦●⭐●✦⭐●✦●⭐✮●⭐●✦●⭐●✮⭐✦● ✅Why People Consider Buying Twitter Accounts People buy established social accounts because they want a fast path to audience, influence, or niche access. The motivations break down into a few common buckets: ✅Speed vs. Sustainability Starting a fresh account means months (or years) of posting, testing, and building trust. Buying an account shortcuts that timeline by giving you an existing follower base — at least on paper. That speed can be attractive for product launches, political communication, or rebranding campaigns. ✅Niche Targeting & Audience Acquisition Some buyers target accounts with very specific follower demographics (e.g., crypto traders, foodies, local audiences in a city), because it’s cheaper to buy that attention than to find and persuade that audience from scratch. ✅(Note: while the benefits sound good, always weigh them against policy risk — more on that next.) ✅The Legal & Platform Reality (What Twitter/X Actually Says) X’s publicly posted Terms of Service and Rules make clear that the platform does not support account transfers or sales. In short, they treat user accounts as a licensed relationship (a right to use) rather than an asset you can freely sell or assign — and they enforce platform-integrity rules around account authenticity and manipulation. This means selling or buying accounts can get the account suspended or permanently removed. A practical example: when InfoWars’ assets were auctioned, X objected in court asserting that accounts and the platform relationship aren’t freely transferable — showing the company will challenge certain high-profile transfers. That case highlights that the platform may not view transfers as a routine business transaction. Bottom line: Buying an account can give you reach — but it can also put the account at immediate risk under X’s rules. Proceed only if you understand and accept that risk. cdn.cms-twdigitalassets.com ✅Risks You Must Be Aware Of Before Buying Platform enforcement: suspension, bans, and account revocations If X detects irregularities (unusual credential changes, login geography, bot-like behavior, sudden spikes in activity, or a flagged transfer), it may limit or suspend the account. Enforcement can happen without notice and may be permanent. ✅Reputation & Audience Quality Risk A large follower number means nothing if followers are inactive, bots, or were gained via engagement farms. Buying a toxic or fake audience can harm your brand — followers may be uninterested, hostile, or used to pushing spammy comments. Tools exist to analyse follower quality, but none are perfect. ✅Scams & Financial Risk The market contains brokers and sellers who misrepresent metrics, sell accounts they don’t own, or disappear after payment. Without proper escrow and contract safeguards, you can lose money and have no recourse. ✅Legal & Contractual Ambiguity Beyond platform rules, there’s limited legal precedent that guarantees transferred social accounts are a freely transferable asset. In corporate M&A, social media “assets” are handled via contracts and platform cooperation — not simple username handovers.

Buying Verified Perfect Money Accounts — Benefits, Risks & Safer Alternatives Perfect Money is an electronic payment system widely used for online trading, forex, digital services, and international transfers in some markets. Important Risks & Warnings Terms of Service violations: Many payment platforms prohibit account selling or transfer. Using purchased accounts may violate Perfect Money’s terms and can result in freezes or permanent closures. Security & fraud exposure: Bought accounts can be linked to stolen identities, fraud history, or retained recovery access by sellers — risking chargebacks, loss of funds, or account reclamation. Loss of control: Sellers might keep recovery emails/phones, allowing them to regain access later and lock you out. Regulatory & legal issues: Financial accounts are subject to AML/KYC rules; using an account not registered to you can create compliance problems and legal exposure in some jurisdictions. Safer, Recommended Alternatives Verify your own Perfect Money account legitimately by submitting accurate ID and documentation — the safest long-term choice. Contact Perfect Money support if verification stalls — they can clarify required documents or next steps. Use business or merchant services designed for higher limits and commercial use. Consider regulated alternatives (Wise, Payoneer, bank transfer solutions) depending on your geography and needs. Bottom line While buying a verified Perfect Money account may promise speed and convenience, the security, policy, and legal risks often outweigh short-term gains. The recommended path is to verify an account in your own name or use approved business/payment solutions for secure, sustainable transactions.

This impulse can lead to costly and criminal pitfalls. The phrase itself crystallizes a set of misunderstandings about verification, trust, and control within online payments. Buying a so‑called “verified” account is not a workaround. It is a vector for fraud that imperils the buyer, the seller, and anyone who transacts with such an account. This investigative guide delineates the jurisprudential and operational consequences of buying accounts, sketches how legitimate verification mechanisms actually function, and offers safety‑centric strategies for resolving verification problems without resorting to illicit markets. The objective is pragmatic: preserve access to payment services while avoiding legal and financial contagion. The fundamental hazards of purchasing accounts At first blush, purchasing a ready‑to‑use account might seem expedient. A short transaction, a username/password handoff, and — allegedly — instant access. But the veneer of convenience quickly flakes away. Contractual violation and account seizure. Payment platforms prohibit account transfers. When detected, the platform will freeze or terminate the account and seize funds. That’s immediate and non‑negotiable in most cases. Exposure to stolen funds or identities. Sellers frequently bootstrap accounts with illicitly obtained information or redirect proceeds from fraudulent transactions. Buyers become conduits in laundering schemes, often unknowingly. No dispute protection. Platform protections (chargeback handling, buyer/seller protection) generally presuppose legitimate account ownership. Operating from a purchased account eliminates those safety nets. Legal culpability. Using an account tied to stolen identity or proceeds may expose the user to criminal investigation and civil liability. Operational instability. The original owner or the platform can reclaim the account at any time. The buyer loses both the account and the money spent to acquire it. In short: purchases are ephemeral and hazardous. They exchange a brittle, illicit convenience for systemic risk. How legitimate PayPal verification works (at a high level) Understanding the official verification workflow helps demystify why shortcuts are dangerous. Identity verification. Platforms verify that the account holder matches government ID and other corroborating documents (passport, driver’s license). This step anchors the account to a legal person. Bank/card linking. Micro‑deposits or instant verification confirm control of linked bank accounts or cards. The micro‑deposit model uses small randomized amounts that the user reports back to prove control. Address verification. Utility bills, bank statements, or government correspondence within a recent window verify residency. Business verification (if applicable). Entities provide incorporation documents, tax IDs, and sometimes proof of operation (invoices, merchant statements). Behavioral and transactional monitoring. Algorithms and human analysts watch for anomalous flows — sudden high volume, unusual geographies — and may impose temporary holds or request further documentation. These mechanisms are designed not to inconvenience but to reduce fraud, protect users, and satisfy legal and compliance obligations (e.g., anti‑money‑laundering statutes). Scam typologies to recognize Fraudsters use reproducible playbooks. Recognizing them avoids a costly mistake. “Lifetime verified” offers. A red flag. No legitimate service can confer irrefragable verification transferable between people.

Short answer: PayPal provides PayPal accounts. Longer answer: PayPal’s ecosystem includes several sanctioned routes and partner platforms that extend PayPal’s merchant capabilities. These include PayPal Business accounts, the PayPal Commerce Platform, and Braintree (a PayPal company) — each targeted at different use cases from casual selling to enterprise-grade commerce. Around these, complementary providers such as Stripe, Square (Block), Adyen, Worldpay, Revolut Business and BNPL firms (Klarna, Affirm) form a multi-rail strategy for merchants seeking redundancy and specialized features. Verification on exchanges like Bybit unlocks higher limits, fiat on‑ and off‑ramps, card withdrawals in some regions, and other features that make active trading and withdrawals easier. For someone who wants instant access to those capabilities, the idea of acquiring an already‑verified account appears to solve a real problem: skip the hassle of identity documents, get access immediately, and start trading or withdrawing without waiting. That impulse is understandable. Verification processes can be confusing or slow for some people, and regional restrictions complicate matters further. Still, the secondary market for verified exchange accounts is a risky environment — and the apparent convenience of buying an account rarely survives the platform’s operational scrutiny and compliance safeguards. The Practical, Legal, and Security Risks Trying to buy verified Bybit accounts exposes you to several serious dangers. At the most basic level, exchange accounts are tied to identity for reasons of compliance and fraud prevention. When ownership changes hands outside the platform’s sanctioned processes, the new user is immediately in a fragile position: the original owner may still control recovery methods such as the linked email or phone number, and sellers commonly retain hidden access that lets them reclaim the account later. Even if the seller claims to transfer full control, many accounts have complex histories — dispute investigations, linked payment methods, or past transactions that attract scrutiny — and those histories can cause the exchange to freeze funds or suspend access once a change in usage is detected. Security threats are equally real. Accounts that change hands frequently are attractive to fraudsters because they obscure provenance. Some accounts offered for sale have been tied to previous illicit activity, and buyers can inadvertently inherit frozen or tainted funds or be associated with suspicious transfers. There are also common scam patterns: sellers request irreversible payments (crypto transfers, gift cards, or P2P payments), promise permanent access, and then reclaim the account or disappear. Because payment reversals are difficult or impossible, victims of these scams have little recourse. In addition, exchanges continuously monitor device fingerprints, IP patterns, and transactional behavior. An account suddenly used from a different geography or showing rapid changes in trading patterns will likely trigger additional verification checks — and that is often when buyers of verified accounts discover limits, freezes, or permanent bans. Legally and ethically, buying a verified account can put you in precarious territory. Many jurisdictions regulate financial activity tightly; using someone else’s identity for trading or holding assets may violate local laws, anti‑money‑laundering rules, or financial platform terms. For businesses, the stakes are even higher: relying on purchased accounts for client funds or operations invites audits, contractual disputes, and reputational damage. Even if an account initially seems to work, the risk that regulatory or platform action will cut off access — sometimes permanently — makes the short‑term gain a potential long‑term catastrophe.

Include a short, compelling call-to-action: “Join our Telegram for weekly tips, exclusive guides, and resources: t.me/YourChannel” Offer small incentives such as free PDFs, templates, or early access to content. Tip: People are more likely to join if they get immediate value. Step 3: Set Up a Simple Landing Page or Lead Magnet Instead of sending people directly to Telegram, create a one-page landing page: Briefly explain the value of joining your channel. Include a form to capture emails (optional). Add a clear Telegram join button. Why: Capturing emails first protects your audience in case of platform issues and improves conversions. Step 4: Small-Scale Promotions Affordable growth can be achieved through targeted ads and partnerships: A. Micro-Influencer Collaboration Find influencers with 1k–50k followers in your niche. Offer shoutouts, product swaps, or small paid collaborations. Outreach Example: Hi [Name], I run [Channel] for [audience]. Would you be open to a shoutout or small collaboration? I can offer [barter/$X]. Thanks! B. Low-Budget Ads Run $5–$15/day ads on Instagram, X, or Facebook. Direct traffic to your landing page, not directly to Telegram. Test ad copy and targeting for highest conversion. Step 5: Implement a Referral Program Referral programs turn your current audience into promoters: Members share their invite links with friends. Reward top referrers with exclusive content, discounts, or freebies. Use a Telegram bot or Google Form to track entries. Contest Example: Duration: 2 weeks Reward: Top 3 referrers get a free course, e-book, or consultation Instructions: Share invite link, submit proof in the form

How to Buy Verified PayPal Accounts for Affiliate Marketing Securely Buy Verified Affiliate marketing demands reliable payout rails, clear bookkeeping, and trust with networks and customers. The temptation to shortcut verification can be high when cash flow is tight or when launching into new markets. But long‑term success depends on durability: verified, compliant accounts; transparent records; and robust security. The following sections provide pragmatic steps and institutional knowledge to get there. Why legitimate verification matters for affiliates Short version: credibility, access, and continuity. Affiliate networks often require verified payout methods for high-volume affiliates. Payment processors (PayPal, Stripe, Payoneer) freeze or limit accounts with inconsistent information or opaque transaction patterns. Verification reduces friction: faster payouts, fewer manual reviews, and fewer holds on funds. Compliance with KYC/AML protects you legally and preserves payment relationships. A one‑time shortcut may yield temporary access but frequently results in frozen balances, account terminations, or worse. Invest in proper verification; it’s insurance against disruption. 2. Choosing the right payout path for your affiliate business Affiliate programs pay via several channels. Evaluate each against fees, speed, compliance, and geography. PayPal (Personal or Business) — Ubiquitous, buyer protection features, instant transfers to cards in some countries. Fees vary by country and currency conversion. Good for many markets but can be strict on high‑volume cross‑border flows. Payoneer — Popular for global affiliate payouts, offers receiving accounts (USD/EUR/GBP) and local ACH/SEPA transfers. Good for cross‑border businesses and marketplaces. Bank transfer (wire/ACH/SEPA) — Lower dispute risk, suitable for high volumes; banks require strong documentation. Wise (formerly TransferWise) — Low‑cost multi‑currency transfers and balances; good for payouts to personal accounts. Skrill, NETELLER — Alternative e‑wallets used by certain networks; check fees and limits. Marketplace / network-native payouts — Some affiliates use escrow or aggregator services provided by the network (merchants of record). They reduce your burden but at higher cost. Match the processor to geography and scale. For U.S./EU audiences, PayPal + bank rails often suffice. For widespread international operations, add Payoneer / Wise for redundancy. 3. How to obtain a legitimately verified PayPal account (step‑by‑step) Use official PayPal channels. Verification builds a durable foundation. Step A — Pick the correct account type Use Business for affiliate networks, agencies, or if invoices and brand names are needed. Use Personal only for small‑scale, non‑commercial receipts. Step B — Use accurate, consistent identity data Legal name or registered business name must match ID and banking details. Avoid abbreviations or nicknames in official fields. Step C — Link and confirm financial instruments Add your bank account and confirm via micro‑deposits (two small deposits). Add a debit/credit card and confirm the small authorization charge. Step D — Complete PayPal identity verification (KYC) Prepare government photo ID (passport, national ID, driver’s license). Provide proof of address (utility bill, bank statement) dated within the last 3 months. For businesses: registration documents, VAT/tax ID, articles of incorporation, and authorized representative ID. Step E — Enable and maintain security controls Turn on two‑factor authentication (2FA) using an authenticator app or SMS. Set up backup recovery email/phone and store credentials in a password manager.
