Tea tempers the spirits and harmonizes the mind, dispels lassitude and relieves fatigue, awakens thought and prevents drowsiness, lightens or refreshes the body, and clears the perceptive faculties.
Lu Yu (The Classic of Tea: Origins & Rituals)
A combination of fine tea, enchanting objects and soothing surroundings exerts a therapeutic effect by washing away the corrosive strains and stress of modern life. [... It] induces a mood that is spiritually refreshing [and produces] a genial state of mind.
John Blofeld (The Chinese Art of Tea)
It was fortunate that tea was at hand, to produce a lull and provide refreshment...
Louisa May Alcott (Little Women (Little Women, #1))
The usual for me." The usual was a strong infusion of different kinds of Oriental teas, which raised her spirits after her siesta.
Gabriel García Márquez (Love in the Time of Cholera)
Iced tea! Nothing is half so refreshing as a glass of black tea piled high with ice! More than a quencher of thirst, it is a tamer of tempers, a lifter of lethargy, and a brightener of smiles. It is a taste of Winter’s chill, magically trapped in midsummer’s glass.
Paul F. Kortepeter (Tea with Victoria Rose)
...Tea. There is nothing saner than tea, he thought. ... Tea was the great leveler. It brought calm, quiet, contentment, warmth. And it was something to do. .....Tea-- so normal, so mundane, so hot... ...The heat and scent of it permeated his head and cleared his mind. He understood completely the attraction of ceremonies grounded in the ritual of drinking tea. It required both caution and abandonment of the senses. It demanded that you move into it slowly and savor the moment. And it rewarded you with warmth and delicacy of taste and refreshment. And after you were done, it could parse out your future.
Thea Devine
Will you take some refreshment?" His lip pulled into a snarl. Unable to contain himself, he added, "One last cup of tea before you burn, you old bitch?
Laini Taylor (Lips Touch: Three Times)
He put the good old cup of tea softly on the table by my bed, and I took a refreshing sip. Just right, as usual. Not too hot, not too sweet, not to weak, not too strong, not too much milk, and not a drop spilled in the saucer. A most amazing cove, Jeeves. So dashed competent in every respect.
P.G. Wodehouse (The Jeeves Omnibus Vol. 1: Thank You, Jeeves / The Code of the Woosters / The Inimitable Jeeves)
And that nice little balcony is yours? How cool it looks up there!” He paused a moment. “Come up and see,” he suggested. “I can give you a cup of tea in no time—and you won’t meet any bores.” Her colour deepened—she still had the art of blushing at the right time—but she took the suggestion as lightly as it was made. “Why not? It’s too tempting—I’ll take the risk,” she declared. “Oh, I’m not dangerous,” he said in the same key. In truth, he had never liked her as well as at that moment. He knew she had accepted without afterthought: he could never be a factor in her calculations, and there was a surprise, a refreshment almost, in the spontaneity of her consent.
Edith Wharton (The House of Mirth)
Coffee refreshes the body,” says Shara. “Tea refreshes the soul.
Robert Jackson Bennett (City of Stairs (The Divine Cities, #1))
He put the good old cup of tea softly on the table by my bed, and I took a refreshing sip. Just right, as usual. Not too hot, not too sweet, not too weak,
P.G. Wodehouse (The Inimitable Jeeves)
The hour [...] can be anywhere between three and six o'clock in the afternoon. The general rule is that the earlier tea is served, the lighter the refreshments. At three, tea is usually a snack -- dainty finger sandwiches, petits fours, fresh strawberrries; at six, it can be a meal -- or "high" tea -- with sausage rolls, salads, and trifle.
Angela Hynes (The Pleasures of Afternoon Tea)
Well, then, we may as well find somewhere to have tea. After spiritual comes bodily refreshment.
Barbara Pym (Excellent Women)
Have you ever tasted rose hips, in tea or jam? A tart sourness that cleans the teeth, refreshes, smells like a good morning. A mash of rose hips and mint keeps me steepling my fingers all day long, to keep those scents in my head. Sumac, too—I think you might like sumac.
Amal El-Mohtar (This Is How You Lose the Time War)
I had now swallowed my tea. I was mightily refreshed by the beverage; as much so as a giant with wine: it gave new tone to my unstrung nerves, and enabled me to address this penetrating young judge steadily.
Charlotte Brontë (Jane Eyre)
Leisurely lovers of real good tea rise to the seventh heaven, when, drop, drop, they let the correctly drawn aromatic liquid roll on the tip of their tongues. Ordinarily, people think that tea is to be drunk; but that is not correct. A drop on your tongue; something refreshing spreads over it, you have practically nothing more to send down your throat, except that a delightfully soothing flavour travels down the alimentary canal into the stomach.
Natsume Sōseki (Kusamakura)
Feeling in need of refreshment, she followed her nose down the street to an Italian café. It was amazing how restorative a few gulps of coffee could be. Hot, bracingly black, and pleasingly bitter, it lifted her spirits far more effectively than the insipid cups of tea so beloved by her English friends.
Jennifer Robson (The Gown)
I’d like to dive into an enormous pool of iced tea,” Kris said, “like in the TV commercials. It always looks so cold and refreshing.
R.L. Stine (Night of the Living Dummy (Goosebumps, #7))
A hundred hands wanted shaking, a hundred tongues expressed their condolences. Thank you, said William, and Kind of you, endlessly. Between his uncle and the helpfulness of the Misses Young and all these other people, William was never alone, not for an hour, except to sleep. He went to bed with the distant, certain expectation that overnight the world would put itself right. He slept for long hours: endless, dreamless sleep, which did not refresh, and when he woke the world bewildered him by persisting in its wayward course. He felt weighted down and dreary. A fog settled between him and his own thoughts, and behind it, unformulated, unexamined, was this: How long before things go back to normal? His mother was dead: he had seen the body; yet this knowledge refused to find a settled place in his mind. It came and went, surprised him every time he chanced upon it, and there were a million reasons not to believe it. His mother was dead, but look: here were her clothes and here her tea cups, here her Sunday hat on the shelf over the coat hook. His mother was dead, but hark: the garden gate! Any moment now she would come through the door.
Diane Setterfield (Bellman & Black)
May I offer some refreshment?" Miss Pink asked, mincingly. "A cup of tea?" Lady Lydiard shook her head. "A glass of water?" Lady Lydiard declined the last hospitable proposal with an exclamation of disgust. "Have you got any beer?" she inquired. "I beg your Ladyship's pardon," said Miss Pink, doubting the evidence of her own ears. "Did you say - beer?" Lady Lydiard gesticulated vehemently with her fan. "Yes, to be sure! Beer! beer!" Miss Pink rose, with a countenance expressive of genteel disgust, and rang the bell. "I think you have beer downstairs, Susan?" she said, when the maid appeared at the door. "Yes, Miss." "A glass of beer for Lady Lydiard," said Miss Pink, under protest. "Bring it in a jug," shouted her Ladyship, as the maid left the room.
Wilkie Collins (My Lady's Money)
allowed to partake of refreshment as they liked—freedom being the sauce best beloved by the boyish soul. They availed themselves of the rare privilege to the fullest extent, for some tried the pleasing experiment of drinking milk while standing on their heads, others lent a charm to leapfrog by eating pie in the pauses of the game, cookies were sown broadcast over the field, and apple turnovers roosted in the trees like a new style of bird. The little girls had a private tea party, and Ted roved among the edibles at his own sweet will.
Louisa May Alcott (Little Women (Illustrated))
In a burst of refreshing honesty, Mary Frances Berry, an African American and former chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights under President Bill Clinton, wrote in a Politico online discussion: “Tainting the tea party movement with the charge of racism is proving to be an effective strategy for Democrats.” Berry, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, added, “There is no evidence that tea party adherents are any more racist than other Republicans, and indeed many other Americans. But getting them to spend their time purging their ranks and having candidates distance themselves should help Democrats win in November. Having one’s opponent rebut charges of racism is far better than discussing joblessness.”17
Kirsten Powers (The Silencing: How the Left is Killing Free Speech)
In addition to the cases that might be defined as defending “Everyman,” Joe began representing struggle comrades as early as 1954 when Walter Sisulu was detained for breaking his banning orders. Sisulu had attended a meeting in the Orange Free State that the ANC tried to disguise as a simple luncheon. He was convicted on a unique charge: “Attending a gathering in order to partake of, or be present while others partake of, refreshment in the nature of tea and/or edibles and/or a meal.”111
Alan Wieder (Ruth First and Joe Slovo in the War Against Apartheid)
Madame Firmiani is a Frenchwoman, and spends her money like a Parisian. She has excellent tea. It is one of the few houses where you can amuse yourself; the refreshments are exquisite. It is very difficult to get admitted; therefore, of course, one meets only the best society in her salons.” Here the Lounger takes a pinch of snuff; he inhales it slowly and seems to say: “I go there, but don’t expect me to present you.” Evidently the Lounger considers that Madame Firmiani keeps a sort of inn, without a sign.
Honoré de Balzac (Works of Honore de Balzac)
Elizabeth was not entirely right. The climb was steep enough, but the trunk, which originally felt quite light, seemed to gain a pound of weight with every step they took. A few yards from the house both ladies paused to rest again, then Elizabeth resolutely grabbed the handle on her end. “You go to the door, Lucy,” she said breathlessly, worried for the older woman’s health if she had to lug the trunk any further. “I’ll just drag this along.” Miss Throckmorton-Jones took one look at her poor, bedraggled charge, and rage exploded in her breast that they’d been brought so low as this. Like an angry general she gave her gloves an irate yank, turned on her heel, marched up to the front door, and lifted her umbrella. Using its handle like a club, she rapped hard upon the door. Behind her Elizabeth doggedly dragged the trunk. “You don’t suppose there’s no one home?” She panted, hauling the trunk the last few feet. “If they’re in there, they must be deaf!” said Lucinda. She brought up her umbrella again and began swinging at the door in a way that sent rhythmic thunder through the house. “Open up, I say!” she shouted, and on the third downswing the door suddenly lurched open to reveal a startled middle-aged man who was struck on the head by the handle of the descending umbrella. “God’s teeth!” Jake swore, grabbing his head and glowering a little dizzily at the homely woman who was glowering right back at him, her black bonnet crazily askew atop her wiry gray hair. “It’s God’s ears you need, not his teeth!” the sour-faced woman informed him as she caught Elizabeth’s sleeve and pulled her one step into the house. “We are expected,” she informed Jake. In his understandably dazed state, Jake took another look at the bedraggled, dusty ladies and erroneously assumed they were the women from the village come to clean and cook for Ian and him. His entire countenance changed, and a broad grin swept across his ruddy face. The growing lump on his head forgiven and forgotten, he stepped back. “Welcome, welcome,” he said expansively, and he made a broad, sweeping gesture with his hand that encompassed the entire dusty room. “Where do you want to begin?” “With a hot bath,” said Lucinda, “followed by some tea and refreshments.” From the corner of her eye Elizabeth glimpsed a tall man who was stalking in from a room behind the one where they stood, and an uncontrollable tremor of dread shot through her. “Don’t know as I want a bath just now,” Jake said. “Not for you, you dolt, for Lady Cameron.” Elizabeth could have sworn Ian Thornton stiffened with shock. His head jerked toward her as if trying to see past the rim of her bonnet, but Elizabeth was absolutely besieged with cowardice and kept her head averted. “You want a bath?” Jake repeated dumbly, staring at Lucinda. “Indeed, but Lady Cameron’s must come first. Don’t just stand there,” she snapped, threatening his midsection with her umbrella. “Send servants down to the road to fetch our trunks at once.” The point of the umbrella swung meaningfully toward the door, then returned to jab Jake’s middle. “But before you do that, inform your master that we have arrived.” “His master,” said a biting voice from a rear doorway, “is aware of that.
Judith McNaught (Almost Heaven (Sequels, #3))
I had a dream where I was in a place that served steak and mashed potatoes and the soup! The pasta soup was heavenly even better than my mother’s homemade recipe. Every spoonful of the soup reminded me of the sun. The mashed potatoes were so smooth that they could slide down my gullet. The steak was medium-rare, my favorite, and every bite reminded me of the steak my mom made but it was one hundred and one times better.  And there was also iced tea and every sip of it felt refreshing like a cold, winter morning with the sun shining merrily and my mom and I throwing snowballs at each other. I  ate and drank until I could eat no more. I felt as if my stomach was about to combust. But then in came the tiramisu. It was better than anything I had ever tasted. The rich smell of coffee wafted up from it. It reminded me of the coffee shop my mom went to when I was little. Despite the fact that my stomach was about to explode I managed to fit in three more slices of tiramisu before I could eat no more. But then came the Ice cream. It was my favorite flavor, mango. The ice cream was silky and sweet. It was like I was on a sunny June morning, a ray of sunlight shining in my face. The sensation intensified as mango juice dribbled down my chin like sunlight itself. I managed six scoops before I was sure my belly would explode. Every moment of eating the ice cream was sunsational. Finally came the float. It was vanilla ice cream on top of some Fanta even though my mom insisted root beer was one hundred times better. It tasted amazing. It was like the early spring making our ice crack in the pond on which my mother and I go ice skating every winter. It was happy but also sad at the same time as if my old life called back for me.
Zining Fan (The Fall of Naquinn)
The things that we describe so carefully are called phenomena — the second element in the definition. The word phenomenon has a special meaning to phenomenologists: it denotes any ordinary thing or object or event as it presents itself to my experience, rather than as it may or may not be in reality. As an example, take a cup of coffee. (Husserl liked coffee: long before Aron talked about the phenomenology of apricot cocktails, Husserl told students in his seminars, ‘Give me my coffee so that I can make phenomenology out of it.’) What, then, is a cup of coffee? I might define it in terms of its chemistry and the botany of the coffee plant, and add a summary of how its beans are grown and exported, how they are ground, how hot water is pressed through the powder and then poured into a shaped receptacle to be presented to a member of the human species who orally ingests it. I could analyse the effect of caffeine on the body, or discuss the international coffee trade. I could fill an encyclopaedia with these facts, and I would still get no closer to saying what this particular cup of coffee in front of me is. On the other hand, if I went the other way and conjured up a set of purely personal, sentimental associations — as Marcel Proust does when he dunks his madeleine in his tea and goes on to write seven volumes about it — that would not allow me to understand this cup of coffee as an immediately given phenomenon either. Instead, this cup of coffee is a rich aroma, at once earthy and perfumed; it is the lazy movement of a curlicue of steam rising from its surface. As I lift it to my lips, it is a placidly shifting liquid and a weight in my hand inside its thick-rimmed cup. It is an approaching warmth, then an intense dark flavour on my tongue, starting with a slightly austere jolt and then relaxing into a comforting warmth, which spreads from the cup into my body, bringing the promise of lasting alertness and refreshment. The promise, the anticipated sensations, the smell, the colour and the flavour are all part of the coffee as phenomenon. They all emerge by being experienced. If I treated all these as purely ‘subjective’ elements to be stripped away in order to be ‘objective’ about my coffee, I would find there was nothing left of my cup of coffee as a phenomenon — that is, as it appears in the experience of me, the coffee-drinker. This experiential cup of coffee is the one I can speak about with certainty, while everything else to do with the bean-growing and the chemistry is hearsay. It may all be interesting hearsay, but it’s irrelevant to a phenomenologist.
Sarah Bakewell (At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Others)
Your laugh reminds me of sweet tea. Like on a really hot day, and the glass is sitting outside all beaded with condensation, and it’s the most goddamn refreshing thing.
Neve Wilder (Resonance (Rhythm of Love #2))
Infuse your first prayer strategy with passages and promises like these: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Ps. 51:10) The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. (Lam. 3:22–23) I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the Lord; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart. (Jer. 24:7) Call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. (Jer. 29:12–13) The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. (Deut. 30:6) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:34) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezek. 36:26 hcsb) Don’t read that last one too quickly, OK? One more time. Slowly. Deliberately. Like how you’d sip a glass of sweet tea on a blazing hot summer day, wanting the refreshment to last. Do you see the promise? “I will give you.” “I will remove your heart of stone” and “give you” a heart that’s alive and tender again, one that’s beating and responsive again. Engaged again. Able to believe again.
Priscilla Shirer (Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer)
Oh, really,” I said, pushing myself to my feet. “I thought it was because you couldn’t get rid of me.” “Well, that, too,” she said with an impish grin. She groaned as she scrambled to her feet. “One thing’s clear at least. I’m going to have to go a little easier on all those refreshments at the balls and afternoon teas and soirees. I think they’re starting to take their toll.” “Very true,” I said, my face serious. “I’d been meaning to say something…” She shot me a worried look, and I couldn’t help grinning. “But I figured you’d notice yourself seeing as how you’ve started having to turn sideways to fit through doors.” She took a swipe at me, but I stepped deftly out of her way. “See?” I said, still smiling. “You’re getting slow, too.” She rolled her eyes, and I ducked in close enough to whisper in her ear. “You wouldn’t want to risk looking less than perfect for Miles now, would you?” She exclaimed in outrage and tried once again to catch me. I escaped her easily, and she proceeded to chase me around the fountains, much to the amusement of the children who followed behind us, shrieking encouragement to one or the other of us. I eluded her for several minutes, ducking behind fountains and jumping over benches, purely for the entertainment of our audience. She entered into the drama with equal enthusiasm, pretending to be slower than she really was. When I eventually let her catch me, we both collapsed onto a bench, laughing. “Don’t think I didn’t notice the blush,” I whispered, too quietly for the children to hear. “I hope you’re not forgetting who Miles is.” I shot her a warning look, and she met my eyes, her own full of guilt. But Ava approached us before she could reply. “If you two are quite finished, we should probably get back to the castle now.” I jumped to my feet, but she was smiling so I relaxed. “As you command, Your Majesty,” I said, bowing low. The children laughed again, and Ava shook her head at me. We were all still smiling when we left the square. None of us were really in a hurry to get back, so we walked, leading the horses behind us. Ava and Sarah were talking idly about the court when a voice called to Ava from across the street. I turned around and sucked in a sharp breath. It was Anhalt, one arm raised in greeting and a broad smile on his face. I had just enough time to whisper his name to Ava and Sarah before he had crossed over to join us. I was careful to keep my face free of all emotion as Sarah and I dropped back to walk respectfully behind Ava and the count. Anhalt seemed delighted with our chance encounter and determined to make the most of his unexpected audience with the queen. I watched the surrounding streets with my usual vigilance while I wondered if his voice really sounded so oily, or if it was my own feelings painting my perception of them. Sarah was listening intently to their conversation, her eyes never leaving the count’s form. I knew she would be paying attention for any clues, so I stopped listening myself, devoting my full attention to watching for any threat to the queen. I wasn’t sure if it was this extra attentiveness or just a heightened sense of alert due to the count’s presence, but I noticed an odd flicker of movement as we passed a small side alley. It was barely more than a shifting of shadow, and I could easily have missed it. Instead I tensed, my hand flying to my sword hilt. In one step, I placed myself between Ava and the alley. She turned to look at me, surprised out of her conversation by my sudden movement. I spoke to her but kept my eyes trained on the shadows. “It might be nothing, but I think it would be a good idea if we moved a bit faster, Your Majesty.
Melanie Cellier (Happily Ever Afters: A Reimagining of Snow White and Rose Red (The Four Kingdoms, #2.5))
I hustled back to the kitchen to prepare some salabat. The hot ginger tea would cure anything that ailed you, and I'd made a few modifications to boost the flavor and health profile. I set the electric kettle and pulled out the jar of ginger, turmeric, honey, cayenne, and calamansi, the last ingredient adding a refreshing hit of citrus tang.
Mia P. Manansala (Arsenic and Adobo (Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery, #1))
Once this refreshing, aromatic, oriental beverage was successfully transformed into colourless and tasteless gargling-water, it suddenly became the national drink of Great Britain and Ireland — still retaining, indeed usurping, the high-sounding title of tea
George Mikes (How to Be a Brit)
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Once upon a time our politicians did not tend to apologize for our country’s prior actions! Here’s a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our great country. These are quite good JFK’S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60’s when De Gaulle decided to pull out of NATO. De Gaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk’s response: “Does that include those who are buried here?” De Gaulle did not respond. You could have heard a pin drop. When in England, at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of ‘empire building’ by George Bush. He answered by saying, “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.” You could have heard a pin drop. There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, “Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?” A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: “Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?” You could have heard a pin drop. A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Germany and France. At morning tea the Frenchman complained that the conference should be conducted in French since it was being held in Paris. The German replied that, so far as he could see, the reason that it was being held in English was as a mark of respect to the other attendees, since their troops had shed so much blood so that the Frenchman wouldn’t be speaking German.

She opened her eyes and then frowned. “Why are you dressed?” “Because I got up and got dressed so I could find some coffee, but I changed my mind and I’m coming back to bed.” “Fully dressed?” “Yes. No shoes, though.” It was too early to follow along with his crazy bouncing ball of logic. “Did Gram put a pot of coffee on yet?” He groaned and threw his arm over his eyes. “Not exactly.” “What is wrong with you this morning?” “I just ran into your grandmother. She was sneaking into the house…in the same dress she wore last night.” “What?” Emma sat up, aches and pains forgotten. “You caught Gram doing the walk of shame?” “Yes, and it was awkward and now I’m going back to bed.” She pushed his arm off his face. “What did she say?” “She said good-morning and told me she was going to take a quick shower and then start breakfast.” “And what did you say?” “I muttered something about taking her time and then ran like a girl.” Emma flopped back onto her pillow and stare at the ceiling. “Wow.” “I probably should have broken it to you better, but I’m not sure how I could have.” She didn’t know what to say. Go, Gram, a part of her was thinking, but another part wanted to hide under the covers with Sean and not deal with the fact her grandmother was currently taking a shower after doing the walk of shame. That was obviously the side of himself Sean was currently listening to. “We have to go down eventually,” she said. “I need coffee. And food.” “I’ll wait here. Bring some back.” She laughed and slapped his thigh. “If I can face her, so can you. She’s not your grandmother.” “It was awkward.” “I’m sure it’s awkward for her, knowing we’re having sex, but she’s an adult about it.” That just made him cover his face with his arm again. “That’s different.” “Why? Because she’s sixty-five?” “No. Because, as you just said, she’s a grandmother. Your grandmother.” “Come on. We’ll go down together.” She slid out of bed and walked toward the bathroom. “Stop making it such a big deal.” Gram was still in the shower when they went past the bathroom on their way down the hall. They could tell because she was whistling a very cheery tune that made Sean wince. Emma grabbed his arm and tugged him toward the stairs. “Coffee.” They got a pot going and sat at the table in silence until enough had brewed to sneak two cups from it. Emma put the kettle on and dropped a tea bag into Gram’s mug. The woman of the hour appeared just as it whistled, looking refreshed and cheerful. “Good morning.” “Good morning,” they both mumbled.

Mr. Grey will see you in a few minutes. Would you like a refreshment while you wait? Coffee, soda, tea . . . ?” “Gravy,” I say.
Fanny Merkin (Fifty Shames of Earl Grey)
Tea, on the other hand, stimulated, refreshed and, heavily sugared, delivered much-needed calories to the undernourished working class. In the second quarter of the nineteenth century, improved water supplies and falling prices made tea Britain’s most popular beverage. Sugar had much to do with propelling it there. As British historian D. J. Oddy notes, “The principal change from the late eighteenth century was the growing use of sugar. By the mid-nineteenth century sugar consumption had reached half a pound (0.2 kg) per head per week.”90 That’s a fair amount of sugar, and over the decades it would increase until, by the end of the century, weekly per capita consumption exceeded one pound.91 But

Looking around the doorjamb, Helen saw Winterborne sitting alone in the parlor, in a chair beside a walnut marble-topped table. He had accidentally knocked a stack of papers from the table, and they had settled on the floor around him. Leaning over awkwardly, he tried to retrieve the fallen pages without toppling from the chair. Concern overcame Helen’s shyness, and she went into the room without a second thought. “Good afternoon, Mr. Winterborne.” She sank to her knees and gathered up the papers. “Don’t trouble yourself with that,” she heard Winterborne say gruffly. “No trouble at all.” Still kneeling, she looked up at him uncertainly. Her heart skipped a beat, and another, as she stared into the darkest eyes she had ever seen, a brown so deep it looked black, shadowed by thick lashes and set deep in a complexion of rich umber. His brutal handsomeness unnerved her. He could have been Lucifer himself, sitting there. He was much larger than she’d realized; even the cast on his leg didn’t help to make him seem less formidable. She handed the papers to him, and their fingers touched briefly. Startled by a shock of awareness, she pulled back quickly. His mouth turned grim, his thick brows drawing together. Helen rose to her feet. “Is there something I can do to make you more comfortable? Shall I send for tea or refreshments?” He shook his head. “Quincy will bring a tray soon.” She wasn’t certain how to reply. It had been easier to talk to him when he had been ill and helpless.

Each year they threw open the grounds of the manor house for a party attended by children from some of the roughest districts of Birmingham. They built a large hall known as The Barn in the park to provide tea and refreshments for up to seven hundred children. George Sr., with his love of nature, believed strongly that every child should have access to playing outside in clean air. Games were organized in the open fields, but the star attraction was the open-air baths. More than fifty children could bathe at any one time, and for the young visitors, most of whom had no access to a bath, it was thrilling. The sun on their backs, the sparkling water always inviting, the boys from the inner cities had no desire to leave and would stay in all day, until they were blue and shivering and cleaner than they had been in years.

It is possible to assemble a roomful of the great and the good from across a city or a region, task them to debate the problems of that region and come up with solutions, and end up with them taking three hours arguing about whether tea or coffee should be served at break time. The success (in their own eyes) of many rulers throughout history has rested upon ensuring there is always a choice of refreshments.”–Pablo Sanchez, On Democracy, 1851

In the ninth century, Ethiopian shepherds noticed their flocks acting unusually frisky after eating wild red berries in the highlands. Those plants were domesticated and coffee is now cultivated in 80 countries. Today, it is said to be the most traded commodity after crude oil. Every year, 400 billion cups of the beverage are drunk by people seeking a caffeine fix. Others prefer caffeinated tea or soft drinks for the same reason – to attain a heightened state of alertness. Ironically, the cup we drink to refresh ourselves when our energies flag is an alkaloid produced by plants to put to sleep insects that have designs on their seeds. In other words, we are addicted to an insecticide that evolved to paralyze and kill.
Janaki Lenin (My Husband & Other Animals)
We began with two buttery sweet edamame and one sugar syrup-soaked shrimp in a crunchy soft shell. A lightly simmered baby octopus practically melted in our mouths, while a tiny cup of clear, lemony soup provided cooling refreshment. The soup held three slices of okra and several slippery cool strands of junsai (water shield), a luxury food that grows in ponds and marshes throughout Asia, Australia, West Africa, and North America. In the late spring the tiny plant develops leafy shoots surrounded by a gelatinous sheath that floats on the water's surface, enabling the Japanese to scoop it up by hand from small boats. The edamame, okra, and water shield represented items from the mountains, while the shrimp and octopus exemplified the ocean. I could tell John was intrigued and amused by this artistic (perhaps puny?) array of exotica. Two pearly pieces of sea bream, several fat triangles of tuna, and sweet shelled raw baby shrimp composed the sashimi course, which arrived on a pale turquoise dish about the size of a bread plate. It was the raw fish portion of the meal, similar to the mukozuke in a tea kaiseki. To counter the beefy richness of the tuna, we wrapped the triangles in pungent shiso leaves , then dunked them in soy. After the sashimi, the waitress brought out the mushimono (steamed dish). In a coal-black ceramic bowl sat an ivory potato dumpling suspended in a clear wiggly broth of dashi thickened with kudzu starch, freckled with glistening orange salmon roe. The steamed dumplings, reminiscent of a white peach, was all at once velvety, sweet, starchy, and feathery and had a center "pit" of ground chicken. The whole dish, served warm and with a little wooden spoon, embodied the young, tender softness of spring.

First and foremost, I am experiencing much better sleep, and I am actually dreaming vividly almost every night now! This began happening during the FIRST WEEK of use! I used to have dreams like this when I was a kid, but before using this appliance, not in YEARS! I am sleeping all the way through the night as well. I am so much more awake and alert in the mornings, and all the way throughout the day, for that matter. As for the side effects, I am seeing my skin glowing, my eyes are brighter, and the bags under my eyes are gone! I feel like my circulation all around is much better, and I do not “gasp” for air anymore. Before, I would take [various brand-named allergy medications], nasal spray and gels, humidifiers, tea kettles, exotic muds and salves—you name it! Nothing would prevent me from going to bed fine and waking up stuffed up like hell and feeling like I was going to suffocate! Oh, and that is during NON-allergy season. During allergy season (or a bad allergy day), I would just be stuffed up constantly and medicate myself to the point of exhaustion. Now, I take nothing. I now sleep all the way through the night, and I wake up renewed and refreshed. I was skeptical trying this out. I had braces in the past and did not offer any resistance to the plan to remove two of my front teeth and “shrink” my upper jaw, effectively shrinking the “tiger’s cage” too small to allow normal growth or function. When seeing Dr. Liao, he saw this right away and recommended strongly that I be tested for a narrowed airway. I did not come for this: I came to have mercury amalgam fillings removed, so I was unsure. Dr. Liao took the time to explain to me that, despite my legitimate concern about the fillings, my priority should be to open the airway that had become so narrow that it, unbeknownst to me, affected almost every area of my life. … I opted to have both upper and lower appliances made to increase the size of my jaws, and braces and two false teeth installed later on to hold the shape of my new bite pattern. This was to take place over the course of two to three years’ time, and was to cost a significant amount of money. The appliance(s) began to work immediately, and since they are to be adjusted weekly (easily by us right at home with a small tool provided), they continue to open the airway more and more every day, allowing me to experience these results to an even greater degree as I go. I even had a flight recently to California (from Virginia), and I had NO ear pain or discomfort! I used to have to take a bunch of pills and wear [earplugs for airplane travel], and it would STILL kill my ears to fly, but not now. I never knew that I was being deprived of the oxygen I needed to thrive, but now that I am experiencing it for the first time in my adult life, I regret not looking into having this done YEARS ago! I highly recommend this to anyone who feels stuffed up in the morning, tired and groggy all day, or any of the plethora of other symptoms associated with a narrowed airway. Thank you, Dr. Liao!

Elena came up with the idea of a fusion elote, taking her beloved Mexican street corn and adding Pakistani and Filipino twists to match with Adeena's and my respective backgrounds. Not only did Jae gave us his mother's recipe for the oksusu cha, or Korean corn tea, but he'd also volunteered to handle all elote duties: slathering the corn with thick, creamy coconut milk before rolling it in a fragrant spice mix that included amchur powder and red chili powder, grilling it, then squeezing calamansi over the corn before sprinkling it with your choice of kesong puti or cotija cheese. It was a simple yet laborious task, but he seemed to enjoy himself ( I wasn't one for gender stereotypes, but what was with guys and grills?) and I'd caught him sneaking more than one smoky, salty treat as he worked. The benefit of being the cook. Meanwhile, I arranged the sweet offerings I'd prepared: mais ube sandwich cookies, mais kon keso bars, and two types of ice candy--- mais kon yelo and ginataang mais. Corn as a dessert ingredient may seem strange to some people, but Filipinos absolutely love and embrace corn in all its salty-sweet possibilities. My first offering sandwiched ube buttercream between corn cookies, the purple yam's subtle vanilla-like sweetness pairing well with the salty-sweet corn. Cheese and corn are a popular savory pairing, but guess what? It makes one of my absolute favorite Filipino ice cream flavors as well, and I channeled that classic combo into a cheesecake bar with a corn cookie crust. Mais kon yelo, literally corn with ice, is a Filipino dessert consisting of shaved ice with corn, sugar, and milk, while ginataang mais, a simple porridge made with coconut milk, glutinous rice, and sweet corn, is usually served warm for breakfast or meryenda. My take on these simple, refreshing snacks utilized those same flavors in a portable, easy-to-eat ice pop bag. However, if you wanted to try the traditional versions, you could just pop down a few booths over to Tita Rosie's Kitchen, the restaurant run by my paternal aunt and grandmother. While my aunt, Tita Rosie, handled the savory side of the menu, offering small cups of corn soup and paper cones full of cornick, or corn nuts flavored with salt and garlic, my grandmother, Lola Flor, reigned over the sweets. The aforementioned mais kon yelo and ginataang mais were the desserts on offer, in addition to maja blanca, a simple corn and coconut pudding. Truly a gluten-free sweet tooth's paradise.

The Agra Etawah Toll Road: Where Highways Meet High Standards A Last-Minute Plan Turned into a Road Trip Worth Remembering It was one of those spontaneous plans—skip the train, rent a car, and drive from Agra to Etawah. I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary. Just a regular Indian highway with some tea stops, a few rough patches, and plenty of honking trucks. But once I entered the Agra Etawah Toll Road, everything changed. It felt like I was driving on an expressway you’d expect to see in developed countries. Clean Lanes, Smart Design, Peaceful Journey From lane markings to the evenness of the road, everything screamed “quality.” I didn’t have to dodge potholes or sudden speed bumps. Just cruise control and calmness. The experience was refreshing—especially for someone used to chaotic drives in North India. #BestHighwayInfrastructure Every few kilometers, I noticed well-designed flyovers, safety reflectors, and proper exits. It’s a road that actually respects the driver. Perfect for Solo Travelers and Families Alike Whether you're driving alone like me or with family, this highway gives you peace of mind. There are security patrols, helpline signs, fuel pumps, and dhabas that don’t look shady for once! It was the first time in a long time I didn’t feel the need to “rush through” a highway journey. Instead, I stopped, stretched, had a clean cup of tea, and continued without pressure. #ModernRoadMakers More Than a Road—It’s a Regional Uplift Along the way, I saw locals selling fresh fruits, farmers transporting goods, and students on scooters heading confidently to coaching classes. The impact of the Agra Etawah Toll Road Project goes beyond travel—it’s transforming the region. People I spoke to said businesses are growing faster, and villages are better connected now. It’s the kind of development that’s practical and visible. #India'sBestHighwayInfrastructure A Standard for India’s Road Future When I finally reached Etawah, I realized I wasn’t tired—I was actually refreshed. That’s rare after a 120+ km drive in India. This toll road gave me what most roads don’t: a stress-free, scenic, and secure journey. The Agra Etawah Toll Road Project isn’t just a success—it’s a sign of the kind of India we’re building. One smooth, safe, smart road at a time.

Twenty - four years, most of them spent in espionage training, and she’d still not learned how dialogue worked. Really, Mrs. Kew should have assigned her to be a maid so she need not speak with anyone. She hastily reviewed the Three Primary Rules for Normal Conversation as drilled into her by long - suffering tutors at the Academy. Hold eye contact for five seconds, blink, glance away, repeat. . . . Do not speak until the other person has finished talking. . . . Do not fidget or climb on the furniture while listening. Thus mentally refreshed, she tried again.

Effortless Miles: A Journey Through the Agra Etawah Toll Road Sometimes, the best part of a journey isn’t where you’re going — it’s how you get there. That’s exactly how I felt while driving along the Agra Etawah Toll Road Project, a highway that completely redefined my expectations of Indian road travel. I started from Agra with a simple plan: get to Etawah before lunch. But the drive ended up becoming the highlight of my day. The moment I entered the toll road, I could feel the difference. The surface was smooth, the lanes wide and well-marked, and everything from signage to exits felt thoughtfully placed. #agraetawahtollroad What stood out most was the consistency. No sudden bumps, no messy diversions, no roadside chaos. Just a clean, open road that made the drive peaceful and enjoyable. I found myself relaxing into the rhythm of the journey — something that rarely happens on Indian highways. #besthighwayinfrastructure The landscape added its own charm. Open fields, scattered trees, and a few distant hills made the scenery surprisingly calming. It wasn’t dramatic, but it had a quiet beauty that matched the tone of the highway itself. I kept my windows down for most of the ride, letting the fresh air and open skies do their thing. #indiasbesthighwayinfrastructure Around halfway, I stopped at a rest zone that was simple but clean — and more importantly, functional. There was a shaded seating area, clean washrooms, and a small stall serving tea and snacks. It’s rare to find rest stops that actually feel like part of the journey rather than a necessary compromise. #modernroadmakers The toll process was smooth and efficient. Thanks to FASTag, I barely had to slow down. The lanes were clearly marked, and there were no hold-ups. In a country where toll plazas often become bottlenecks, this one was refreshingly quick. By the time I reached Etawah, I felt more refreshed than tired — a rare thing to say after 120 kilometers of highway driving. The Agra Etawah Toll Road Project didn’t just help me reach my destination. It made the journey itself something worth remembering. This highway isn’t just infrastructure — it’s an experience. And if this is what the future of Indian roads looks like, I can’t wait to take the next one.

For the solo traveller, it symbolizes freedom, safety, and convenience all in one stretch of road. Each kilometre travelled here feels like a step forward in India’s road-building vision. #agraetawahtollroadproject 13. One Traveller’s Ride on the Agra–Etawah Toll Road Introduction Travelling alone on Indian highways often comes with its own share of challenges. Yet, the Agra–Etawah Toll Road Project has turned what was once a stressful drive into a comfortable and enjoyable journey. For the solo explorer, this road offers a unique blend of modern infrastructure and glimpses of authentic Uttar Pradesh. Linking Two Unique Destinations Agra, renowned globally for the Taj Mahal, is a city steeped in history, while Etawah has carved a name for itself with its safari park and serene countryside. This toll road brings the two destinations together with ease, cutting down travel time and making the journey as pleasant as the destinations themselves. Driving the Highway The moment wheels hit the toll road, the difference is clear. The surface is smooth, the lanes are well divided, and toll management is efficient. For a lone traveller, this design reduces fatigue and adds to the sense of independence on the open road. It demonstrates how #modernroadmakers long drives more relaxed and secure. Views Worth Noticing This journey is not just about covering distance—it’s about what you see along the way. Vast stretches of farmland, quiet villages, and open skies create a refreshing atmosphere. Stopping at a roadside café or tea stall adds a local touch to an otherwise modern journey. These contrasts make the highway memorable in its own way. Safety Along the Stretch For those driving alone, safety can never be overlooked. The Agra–Etawah corridor ensures peace of mind with clear signboards, rest zones, and emergency support services. Proper lighting and accessible helplines mean that travellers can enjoy the road without worrying about unexpected setbacks.

A Solo Foodie’s Delight on India’s Best Highway Project A Trip Fueled by Curiosity (and Hunger) I started this road trip with one mission — to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. As a solo traveler and self-proclaimed foodie, I decided to explore the culinary stops along India’s most celebrated highway project. What I found was far more delicious than I imagined. Dhabas with a Modern Twist This highway surprised me with its incredible mix of food options. Traditional dhabas still served hot parathas with butter, but now they had clean seating, proper parking, and quick service counters. I even found themed cafés and modern food courts serving global cuisine — a dream for travelers who like variety. Perfectly Planned Stops What made the experience even better was how these food joints were spaced out. I never had to worry about running too long on an empty stomach. From fresh sugarcane juice to piping hot tea, every stop offered a chance to refuel and refresh before hitting the road again. #modernroadmakers Boosting Local Flavors and Economy I noticed that many of these food joints were run by local families, serving recipes passed down for generations. This highway isn’t just connecting cities — it’s giving travelers like me a taste of regional flavors and supporting local businesses in the process. #india'sbesthighwayinfrastructureproject A Journey for the Taste Buds By the time my trip ended, I had tried everything from spicy pakoras to authentic thalis. This highway didn’t just get me where I needed to go — it turned my trip into a culinary adventure. For any traveler who loves food as much as the road, this stretch is a must-experience.

For anyone who loves long drives or road trips, this stretch is a true delight — combining safety, speed, and scenic beauty. #agraetawahtollroadproject #modernroadmakers A Modern Highway in the Heart of Uttar Pradesh The Agra Etawah Toll Road Project is part of National Highway 19 (NH-19), previously known as NH-2. It covers a total distance of about 124.52 kilometers, linking key towns like Firozabad, Shikohabad, and Jaswant Nagar before reaching Etawah. This road is also a section of the Golden Quadrilateral, India’s most ambitious highway network connecting major metro cities. The highway was developed by Modern Road Makers, a company known for constructing high-quality roads and modern infrastructure across India. Their focus on durability, design, and safety is clearly visible throughout the entire route. Key Features of the Project The Agra Etawah Toll Road is not just another road — it’s a model of modern road construction. Some of its main features include: Six-lane main carriageway for smooth and speedy traffic flow. Service roads for local movement and smaller vehicles. 7 flyovers and 7 railway overbridges for uninterrupted travel. 3 major and 26 minor bridges ensuring strong connectivity. Over 200 culverts for proper water drainage. Two toll plazas equipped with FASTag systems for easy payments. Underpasses for pedestrians and light vehicles for safety. Noise barriers and safety walls along sensitive stretches. With these features, the highway offers one of the best driving experiences in the region. #modernroadmakers The Road Trip Experience If you’re travelling from Agra to Etawah, the journey feels both modern and refreshing. Once you leave the busy streets of Agra, the open stretch welcomes you with wide lanes and clear signs. The road passes through farmlands, villages, and small towns — giving a real glimpse of Uttar Pradesh’s countryside life. You’ll find dhabas and rest points at regular intervals, perfect for a short tea break or local snack. The road is well-maintained, and driving feels effortless, whether by car or bike. The smooth surface and well-marked lanes make it ideal for both local travellers and tourists heading toward destinations like the Etawah Safari Park. During evenings, the highway glows beautifully with soft lighting and passing headlights — a perfect sight for those who love night drives. The Agra Etawah Toll Road – A Journey Through India’s Best Highway Infrastructure Traveling through India often brings surprises — but the Agra Etawah Toll Road isn’t just a pleasant surprise; it’s a showcase of excellence. As someone who loves exploring highways, I can confidently say that this stretch stands as a symbol of India’s Best Highway Infrastructure — smooth, scenic, and supremely engineered. A Perfect Blend of History and Modernity Spanning approximately 124 kilometers, the Agra Etawah Toll Road connects the historical charm of Agra with the natural beauty and progress of Etawah. This section forms an important part of the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. The first thing you notice on this road is the flawless surface — six lanes of pure driving comfort. Every curve, lane marking, and toll system has been crafted with precision. Built and maintained by Modern Road Makers, this road doesn’t just connect destinations — it connects India’s heritage with its modern engineering brilliance. As I drove past the well-marked lanes and scenic stretches, it was clear why the #agraetawahtollroadproject is often called a benchmark for design and execution. It’s not just about speed; it’s about safety, sustainability, and comfort. Engineering That Defines Excellence What makes this highway stand out is its attention to detail. Modern Road Makers used cutting-edge construction techniques and durable materials to ensure a long-lasting, low-maintenance road. From sturdy overpasses to smart drainage systems, every element is designed to handle both the weather and the growing traffic load efficiently. The solar-powered lighting system along parts of the route adds a sustainable touch, reducing carbon footprint while ensuring visibility at night. As I cruised along, the evenly spaced signboards and digital monitoring systems reflected true world-class planning — something you expect from #modernroadmakers but rarely see so perfectly executed in one place. A Traveler’s Delight As a traveler, the journey on the Agra Etawah Toll Road is one to remember. Wide lanes ensure smooth movement even during peak hours. Clean rest stops and fuel stations are strategically placed to make long drives comfortable. There’s even greenery on both sides of the road — giving it a refreshing and eco-friendly vibe. You can easily stop for a quick tea break or simply admire the symmetry of this engineering marvel. Driving here feels effortless, with no jerks, no potholes, and no confusion — just a seamless experience that proves how far India’s road network has come under projects like #indiasbesthighwayinfrastructure. Connecting Communities and Opportunities Beyond travel convenience, the Agra Etawah Toll Road has played a major role in improving regional development. The reduced travel time between Agra, Etawah, and Lucknow has boosted tourism, trade, and logistics. Farmers, transporters, and small businesses all benefit from quicker access to markets. This isn’t just a highway; it’s an artery of growth for Uttar Pradesh. And much of the credit goes to Modern Road Makers, whose expertise and dedication continue to redefine what Indian infrastructure can achieve. A Symbol of Modern India The Agra Etawah stretch is more than a road — it’s a statement. It shows how technology, sustainability, and vision can come together to create something extraordinary. From the silent hum of vehicles gliding across its smooth surface to the glow of solar lights illuminating the night, everything about this project speaks progress.
