We use our SES to read emotions and connect to other people, and it is in observing others that we learn to read ourselves. And when our social interactions are coming through a screen (and perhaps not even with real people on the other side of the device), it impairs our ability to develop this system and to benefit from its healing power. Face to face interactions are being replaced by face to screen interactions and anxiety and alarm in our children is increasing, while at the same time, empathy in our children is decreasing. It is no coincidence that the lack of activities that mature the SES is corresponding to a jump in anxiety and alarm in our children.
