Patience Quran Quotes

The word 'jihad' has nowhere been used in the Qur'an to mean war in the sense of launching an offensive. It is used rather to mean 'struggle'. the action most consistently called for in the Qur'an is the exercise of patience. (p. 7-8)

Virtue does not consist in whether you face towards the East or the West; virtue means believing in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book and the prophets; the virtuous are those who, despite their love for it, give away their wealth to their relatives and to orphans and the very poor, and to travellers and those who ask [for charity], and to set slaves free, and who attend to their prayers and pay the alms, and who keep their pledges when they make them, and show patience in hardship and adversity, and in times of distress. Such are the true believers; and such are the God-fearing.

And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is a burden except for the humble— 46. those who are certain that they will meet their Lord and to Him they will return.

And seek assistance through patience and prayer, and most surely it is a hard thing except for the humble ones,

On my best days, Allah give me gratitude. On my worst days, Allah give me patience. When I am blessed, Allah make me generous. When I am wronged, Allah make me forgiving. When I am struggling, Allah make me persevere. When I am anxious, Allah give me peace. When I am heartbroken, Allah heal me. When I sin, Allah forgive me. When I am lost, Allah give me guidance. When I am in darkness, Allah give me light. When I see others sin, Allah protect me from the eyes of judgment. No matter what I face, Allah make it a means for turning my heart toward Your names.

Prayer should not be used as a means to an end, because connection and conversation with God is the whole purpose of life. Salat can be one of the greatest opportunities to foster patience and gratitude, because we are called to pray to God regardless of how we feel or what we are going through. We are called to be consistent in prayer, even on the days when we feel disconnected from God, because He is not disconnected from us. When we are grounded in the soil of prayer, we are able to be grateful in times of blessing, and graceful in times of difficulty and despair.

Allah (glorified is He) tells us in a very profound ayah (verse): “Verily with hardship comes ease.” (Qur’an, 94:5). Growing up I think I understood this ayah wrongly. I used to think it meant: after hardship comes ease. In other words, I thought life was made up of good times and bad times. After the bad times, come the good times. I thought this as if life was either all good or all bad. But that is not what the ayah is saying. The ayah is saying WITH hardship comes ease. The ease is at the same time as the hardship. This means that nothing in this life is ever all bad (or all good). In every bad situation we’re in, there is always something to be grateful for. With hardship, Allah also gives us the strength and patience to bear it.

Chapter 90: [This] Countryside I swear by [this] countryside, you are a native settled on this land, as well as any parent and whatever he may father. We have created man under stress. Does he reckon that no one can do anything against him? He says: "I have used up piles of money!" Does he consider that no one sees him? Have we not granted him both eyes, a tongue and two lips, and guided him along both highroads? Yet he does not tackle the Obstacle! What will make you realize what the Obstacle is? It means redeeming the captive, or feeding some orphaned relative on a day of famine or some needy person in distress. Then he will act like someone who believes, recommends patience and encourages mercifulness. Those will be the companions on the right-hand side, while the ones who disbelieve in Our signs will be companions on the sinister side: above them a fire will hem them in.

IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE DISPENSER OF GRACE: (1) NAY! I call to witness this land – (2) this land in which thou art free to dwell5215 – (3) and [I call to witness] parent and offspring:5216 (4) Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil, and trial.5217 (5) Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? (6) He boasts, “I have spent wealth abundant!”5218 (7) Does he, then, think that no one sees him?5219 (8) Have We not given him two eyes, (9) and a tongue, and a pair of lips,5220 (10) and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? (11) But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road.... (12) And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? (13) [It is] the freeing of one’s neck [from the burden of sin],5221 (14) or the feeding, upon a day of [one’s own] hunger, (15) of an orphan near of kin, (16) or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust – (17) and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. (18) Such are they that have attained to righteousness;5222 (19) whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages – they are such as have lost themselves in evil, (20) [with] fire closing in upon them.5223

Crying out and complaining to Allâh does not mean that a person has no patience. In the Qur’ân, we find Ya‘qûb (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) saying: “My course is comely patience (sabrun jamîl)” (Yûsuf 12:83), but his love and longing for his lost son Yûsuf made him say: “How great is my grief for Yûsuf” (Yûsuf 12:83). Sabrun jamîl refers to patience with no complaint to other people. Complaining to Allâh does not cancel out patience, as Ya‘qûb said: “I only complain of my distraction and anguish to Allâh” (Yûsuf 12:86).

Patience is not about waiting until all your prayers come true, it’s about surrendering to whatever God has written for you.

Please, do not misunderstand relying on God and seeking His help with laziness and inaction.  On the contrary, it means that you should always do your best and exhaust all means available to you.  But, if all fails, you do not despair because you have faith in your heart that the Lord is always there supporting you and rewarding you for your patience and effort.

Abdul Razzaq al-Badr said, The character consists of inward etiquettes such as shyness, patience and generosity, and outward etiquettes such as cheerful countenance, good treatment, and honesty in speech. The character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is the most perfect of all characters for his character resembled the Qur’an.

Imam Ahmad said: “Allah, the Exalted, has mentioned patience in 90 places in the Quran.

I asked Allah for strength so He sent me trials. I asked Allah for growth so He sent me rain. I asked Allah for freedom, so He showed me the prison of my ego. I asked Allah for patience, so He made me wait. I asked Allah for answers, so He filled me with questions. I asked Allah for love, so He took away the world and gave me Himself.

God says in the Qur’an That which is with you will come to an end, but that which is with God remains. And He shall surely pay those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do. / Whoever acts righteously, whether male or female, and is a believer, him verily We shall revive with a goodly life. And We shall surely pay them their reward according to the best of what they used to do. (Al-Nahl, 16:96–97) The goodly life (‘hayatan tayyibah’ in Arabic) mentioned here requires belief and virtue—and patience and steadfastness in these—but is true life. It is true because it is the life that the soul at peace will have in eternity. The soul at peace is truly alive.

Marry a woman who is religious. If money comes, she is grateful, and if things get tough, she is patient.
