In honor of Oprah Winfrey: Even greater than the ability to inspire others with hope is the power to motivate them to give as much to the lives of others as they would give to their own; and to empower them to confront the worst in themselves in order to discover and claim the best in themselves.

I tend to have really interested conversations with employers. They enjoy my interviews and they always last a little longer than norm for i have so much to say and as one said, i am but a breath of fresh air. I was asked what motivates me? I told them my children. When i was a child, i wanted to be like Oprah. I want to be the kind of person my children will be aspire to be. I want my daughter to say she wants to be like me.

Admittedly, Oprah did fall into some abusive relationships, took prohibited drugs and had her time with promiscuity. These were mistakes she made but, eventually, she got out of all of them.  She did not dwell on these circumstances, nor did she let these challenges dictate the direction of her life. Oprah Winfrey chose to be who she is now and her personal choice to get out of the rut rewarded her immensely.

What saying the word “yes” did was allow Oprah to call up those positive, confident associations when she needed them most. Taking the first step is all about confidence level (or “state,” as Robbins refers to it), and the word “yes” magically and instantly puts you in just the right state for walking across coals (or selling a product, or negotiating a raise).

Did I enjoy it? I did, on some level, but I never let myself ask that question. Running was just something I had to do, something I had always done. People, sometimes in a vaguely accusatory way, would wonder aloud about my exercise habits. “Do you run so you can eat the chocolate cake?” a friend of a friend asked at a dinner party. She eyed the last bit of whipped cream on my fork as I set it down on my dessert plate. I felt exposed, even though she had misidentified my motivation. It wasn’t about the cake. I always ate the cake. I ran because I was afraid of what I would feel if I sat still.
