The aftermath of loss- When you lose everything, you lose the fear of losing anything. And then, everything becomes possible. You know, what makes something impossible for us humans- the fear, the fear of loss. In the process of achieving something, there is always a fear of losing something.

There is a limit only when there is fear. When man fears a loss, he will limit his potential by not taking risks. There are two kinds of fear of loss- fear of losing a past attachment and fear of a future failure. And believe me, fear of any kind of loss is more harmful than the loss itself. Coz, we humans tend to exaggerate in our minds the possibility of harm a situation can do to us than what it actually does. And, did you notice, both the fears contain the term past and future. There is no present involved in the fear. We unnecessarily ruin our present due to a possibility of past or future damage. And to be insolently truthful, my friends, past, and future are, both, indefinite!

Attachment is a bond; we develop with someone on purpose, that cultivates into dependency. Love is free. It knows no conditions, no expectations, no demands, no intentions, and particularly, no dependency. I am attached to my mother because she takes care of me, she cooks delicious food for me, and I am habituated to see her whenever I come home from work. And now, I am dependent on her to take care of me, cook food for me, be there whenever I come home from work. I will also do all kind of sacrifices whenever required, for her. I love my mom because ... I cannot think of a reason; I just love her. I don’t care whether she takes care of me or not, whether she cooks for me or not, whether she is there when I come home or not. She is free to do whatever she loves to do, and I’ll love her till eternity.

Sometimes we so unnecessarily believe that the thing we can see is best for us. But, it is only because we are not willing to see beyond it. The knowledge that even the most effective bullying policies of schools failed to protect a student, whose difference attracted unwanted attention and scarring comments, influenced Neha’s decision to support John’s choice.

Transition occurred not only in Neha’s life. Kovai also transitioned from sweltering summers with extreme temperatures as high as 40 degrees to monsoon madness with the heavy downpour drenching everyone and everything in her line of approach to not so chilly romantic winters offering a pleasant relief to weather-beaten residents.

Bickering based on in-laws’ actions and behaviour were not uncommon between husbands and wives. Arguments of such nature usually erected a temporary wall between couples that mended with the passage of time. However, such wrangling left Neha with a sense of impending doom.

Bhalu looked like an unkempt, wild version of the most majestic dog I had ever laid eyes on – her name was Grace. My Grace. A German shepherd, a monster puppy who grew up to be a lady. Forever remembered fondly (by me) for taking regular puppy-sized dumps in Neha’s slippers and shoes, for being the reason Neha and I would have to figure innovative ways to save ourselves and run for cover if she were in the vicinity, for chewing up our toes like her life depended on it, for shredding curtains, socks, shoes and anything she could get a hold of with rare delight, for a bark so fierce yet feminine that people feared pressing the bell at our gates.

Neha’s walk across the river felt excruciatingly long. Like a rubber band stretched to its limits. It is peculiar how moments of happiness and euphoria seem to pass over like greased lightning when compared to the ones filled with pain or anxiety. I often ask myself if happiness is genuinely fleeting or if we are hardwired to believe that human beings are born to suffer, and for that very reason tend to sadistically amplify and stretch our anxieties? Could our age old conditioning be in cahoots with Loki? Maybe, maybe not. I am still debating this, internally...

And on the life science and healthcare side, Arie Belldegrun of Kite Pharma was excited about cell therapy, while Nat Turner of Flatiron Health was keen on the application of data in “neurology, neurodegenerative disease, and cardiovascular diseases.” The most interesting response came from Tony Fadell, the co-founder of Nest. “I think it’s more important to look at the markets than spaces and industries,” he told me. Beyond Silicon Valley, big changes are happening in India, in Southeast Asia, and across Latin America. “These places are going through massive transitions, just like China has already. You need to pay attention to these new markets and see what unique problems you can solve for these markets. You always need to think in the context of the problems of the place you’re going after.

Neha. This name is special. Her specialty lied in her talking. According to her boss, her negotiation skill was best & he took her on his head for that skill. I learnt a big lesson in life that growth comes with results. So many times I was compared & demeaned, but I was just cried in kindness & let it go with smile.
