Drink up, boys, drink up and don’t worry, if we finish this bottle we’ll go down and buy another one. Of course, it won’t be the same as the one we’ve got now, but it’ll still be better than nothing. Ah, what a shame they don’t make Los Suicidas mezcal anymore, what a shame that time pases, don’t you think? what a shame that we die, and get old, and everything good goes galloping away from us.
Roberto Bolaño (The Savage Detectives)
You can leave a place, you can leave a situation. You can quit a job, move to a different house, forget a thing that has happened, or even give up on a love. But the one thing you can never walk away from is yourself.

Mezcal, so good so true. Distilled filth to filter his filth inside. He slammed the glass on the table and poured a third. Shots made him a better man: his teeth whitened, his wit quickened, his stiff hair stayed kempt and acted like it gave a shit.
Yuri Herrera (La transmigración de los cuerpos)
...the age of surveillance is only a symptom of the new hyper-narcissism that has infected our collective reality tunnels. We invite the surveillance cameras into our homes because they are proof that someone is paying attention to us.

I realized a long time ago not to worry about whodunnit; the more answers you find, the more questions they'll keep raising.

Deciding that he was essentially useless, I made him a large glass of sangre del tigre- "blood of the tiger"- a lethal Bloody Mary that I had picked up in Mexico City. Tomato juice, clam juice, raw egg, fresh horseradish, hot sauce, ground white and black pepper, salt, the juice from pickled jalapeños, orange zest, and a large slug of mezcal.

Good times can still be had by those following the Paleo lifestyle. Cocktails are often synonymous with sugary syrups and artificial mixers, but I enlisted the help of my craft cocktail mixing brother, Joel, to create these specialty real food ‘mocktails’, or ‘fables’ as he calls them. We also see no problem with adding a few splashes of 100% agave Tequila or Mezcal to any of these beverages! (1.5 ounces should do)
Danielle Walker (Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes to Eat Well & Feel Great)
They always try to trick you, deliberately throwing extraneous plot lines just to confuse and misguide you, withholding important information until the last chapter, using vague and misleading descriptions so you don't notice something that should be plain as day.

But it's all just smoke and mirrors, like stage magic – they haven't really gone anywhere, but you believe they've disappeared because that's what you want to believe.  It's like the setting sun, it doesn't cease to exist after it drops below the horizon.

It would not be until darkness had taken indisputable control over the land, until the flames of the bonfire created an unreal world of shadows, until tequila and mescal untied men from their somber selves.

Tepeztates are strong on the nose with a pronounced herbal scent—almost marijuana-like in some cases (if you drink enough of it, the effects may be similar). The herbal quality continues on the palate accompanied by rich roasted agave. As your mezcal palate develops, you are likely to find yourself drawn to tepeztates.
John P. McEvoy (Holy Smoke! It's Mezcal!: A Complete Guide from Agave to Zapotec)
For every bad thing in life, mezcal. And... for every good thing, too.
Luis Alberto Urrea (The Hummingbird's Daughter)
Lauren listened to the instructor’s smooth voice as she asked them to focus on their intention for the hour. Lauren already knew what hers should be: forgiveness. Her therapist had told her that. She should come on this trip so she could forgive and hopefully be forgiven. Last night, after the mezcal margaritas on the beach, she was sure she could do it. In fact, she’d almost turned to Ashley and said it. But in the end she’d held her tongue, not wanting to have the conversation in front of Natalie. Not wanting her to be a part of it. Wanting it to be something she and Ashley shared privately. But there was no such thing as something special between her and Ashley.

In linguistics, a hyponym is a word that is a more specific subset of a larger, more general word. The more general word is called a hypernym. Tequila is a hyponym of mezcal. Mezcal is the hypernym of tequila.8 In the abstract, that relationship reads like: All Xs are Ys; not all Ys are Xs. What it means here is that all tequilas are mezcal, but not all mezcals are tequila. HOPE YOU’RE NOT IN A RUSH Now, it’s true that many wines are aged for a number of years, and many of the best whiskies can be aged anywhere from six to twenty years before they’re released.
Josh Clark (Stuff You Should Know: An Incomplete Compendium of Mostly Interesting Things)
As mezcal is certainly an acquired taste for some, an initial reaction for a new mezcal drinker to a robust joven might not be pleasant. Several years ago as I was getting deeply into mezcal, my wife was no fan. I kept insisting this spirit is amazing while she kept insisting it tasted like a doctor’s office on a good day, or dirty socks on a bad day (nice visual, right?). How she knows what either of these tastes like, I don’t want to know. But in any case there was no convincing her. Then in late 2009, Ilegal came onto the scene with its reposado and anejo which were the first aged mezcals I had seen in the U.S. My wife, having virtually sworn off mezcal for all eternity, instantly took to the anejo and declared it magnificent! After I picked myself up off the floor, I knew there was another path to developing a mezcal palate. Now, of course, she’ll take a daily joven arroqueño IV-drip, but she may have never found mezcal without an anejo introduction.

His most famous lines became popular expressions in Mexico. He would say, “Usted no se despreocupe”—“Don’t un-worry yourself.” And my favorite: “Ni modo chato!”—“No worries, dude!

Ay, que lastima que ya no hagan mezcal Los Suicidas. Qué lástima que pase el tiempo ¿verdad? Que lástima que nos muramos y que nos hagamos viejos y que las cosas buenas se vayan alejando de nosotros al galope.
Roberto Bolaño (The Savage Detectives)
