One way to respond to these "sins" is found in The Divine Comedy, in which Dante is ultimately led to the vision of God by his guide, Beatrice. In first traversing through the Inferno, Dante reveals that the inhabitants of the Inferno are not there because they are sinners. Sinners also make up the populations of Purgatory and Paradise. Rather, those souls are in the Inferno because they are sinners who refused to admit to their own sins. They denied their faults and projected them onto others, blaming everyone around them. The lesson we learn is that only when our sins become acknowledged and deeply felt can they be integrated. Deep reflection and prayer are an important part of the integration of the [inner] shadow. Once we admit to our shadow with honesty and an open heart, the shadow has the potential to become transformed. Once the shadow is integrated, the Seven Deadly Sins can become aspects of a healthy self. Greed and lust become passion, imbuing our journey with heart and fire. Anger transforms into righteousness that acts compassionately for own and other's behalf. The healthy side to gluttony is self-care, something many women have to learn. Envy, once integrated, becomes an appreciation of others. And in a society where doing is valued over being, sloth turns into the ability to be still. Pride enables us to feel good about our accomplishments and grow in confidence and strength. But the path to authenticity is to admit these qualities are within us. It is shadow work that enables holy women to make their hidden struggles into levers with which to free themselves.

Dear God, We have failed you, we have failed you miserably. From eating animals to becoming animals, from cutting trees to cutting our conscience we have failed you. But purity of heart isn’t limited to matters of sex. It’s about not letting lesser loves or sins distract us from the Lord. We need to guard our hearts not just against lust and pornography, but also against gossip, anger, pride, greed, and selfishness. Indeed, the refinement and training of the soul consists in restoring the attributes of anger and passion to a state of equi- librium, and the balance in which they are to be weighed is the code of the Law, ob- served in all matters. Then both soul and body will remain healthy, and intellect and faith will advance; and each of these will be used in its proper place, according to the command of the Law. In obedience to the Law, man should earnestly fear God, and not strive to seek dispensation,¹⁵ for the Law and the fear of God are a balance which maintain the attributes in a state of equilibrium, preventing some from prevailing over others. Disequilibrium would be the state of animals and beasts of prey, for in animals the attribute of passion prevails over that of anger, and in beasts of prey the attribute of anger prevails over that of passion. Of neces- sity, animals are therefore given to greed and lust, and beasts of prey to conquest, wrath, and dominance, to killing and hunting.

The two attributes of passion and anger must then be maintained in a state of equilibrium, to avoid descent to the animal and bestial station, and to prevent the emergence of other reprehensible attributes. For if passion crosses the boundary of equilibrium, cupidity, greed, expectation, vileness, abjection, lust, miserliness, and treachery will appear. Equilibrium of passion consists in exercising the prop- erty of attracting benefit only to the extent of essential need, and only at the time of need. For if the soul desires more than it needs, cupidity will emerge; and if it desires before the time of need, greed will arise. If it desires to provide for the fu- ture, expectation will appear. If it desires something lowly and abominable, vile- ness and abjection will result. If it desires something elevated and pleasurable, lust will arise. If it desires to preserve something, miserliness will result. All this be- longs to the category of profligacy, and “Truly He loves not the profligate.”¹⁶ And if the soul fears that spending may cause it to suffer poverty, cowardice will arise. If the attribute of passion is, by contrast, deficient and subjugated in man’s original disposition, effeminacy, neutrality, and lowliness will result.

A seeker has to remember only one thing: in each moment, to use every occasion and situation to become more aware. Then whether it is hunger or anger or lust or greed, every state can be used to grow in awareness. If you go on accumulating awareness in this way, bit by bit, eventually, you will have enough fuel stored in you. In the fire that is created from this fuel, you will find that you are neither the waking state, nor the dream state, nor the deep-sleep state—you are beyond and separate from all three.

The Six Emotional Disturbances Through yoga we are able to lessen the six emotional disturbances that cause us so much anguish: lust, pride and obsession, anger, hatred, and greed. They are called negative emotions by Western psychology or deadly sins by Christianity, and indeed these emotional reactions are enemies of spiritual growth when they are beyond our control. However, each of these emotions exists for a purpose and can be used wisely.

Before the Enlightenment aberrations in behavior were ascribed to God, sin, magic, witches, and evil spirits. It was only in the nineteenth century that scientists in France and Germany began to investigate behavior as an adaptation to the complexities of the world. Now a new paradigm was emerging: Anger, lust, pride, greed, avarice, and sloth—as well as all the other problems we humans have always struggled to manage—were recast as “disorders” that could be fixed by the administration of appropriate chemicals.

the seven deadly sins are lust, which means a strong passion or longing for sexual desires. Gluttony, is an excessive and ongoing eating of food and drinks. Greed, is the excessive pursuit of material things. Sloth, is an excessive laziness or failure to act upon or utilize your talents. Wrath, is a strong anger or hate toward another person. Envy, is the intense desire to have an item that someone else possesses. Pride, is an excessive view of oneself without regard for others.

From the earliest centuries, the Church has understood that sin, or vice, has what are called opposing virtues: virtues that by their very nature counteract and weaken the influence of the sin in our lives. Following this tradition, St. Ignatius of Loyola recommended developing virtues that strike to the heart of our most troublesome sins. It goes something like this: we examine our consciences carefully. We go to Confession and get “swept clean and put in order.” Then we get to work refurnishing our house. We identify the virtue that will help us displace the sin. Chastity counteracts lust. Temperance uproots gluttony. Generosity counterbalances greed. Diligence displaces sloth. Forgiveness and meekness offset wrath or anger. Kindness replaces envy. And humility supplants pride. With each subsequent confession, the process continues on a deeper and deeper level until we find ourselves set free.

I believe marriage was designed to do what only marriage can do - point us to Jesus by modeling his love for us. This, though, isn’t easy or even preferable. This means the sin in us, the pride and selfishness and anger and stubbornness and greed and lust in us, will be revealed through our partner. Popular author Philip Yancey states that the seven deadly sins might today be renamed the seven seductive virtues. The truth of his statement is evident when we stop to recognize how greed and envy drive our economy, how anger fuels terrorism, how lust is openly celebrated on television, how athletes and other entertainers go far beyond pride, arrogantly flaunting their prowess with various forms of exhibitionism. One has to have his head buried in the sand to not see how gluttony and sloth are rampant in our country.

There are three gates leading to this hell—lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul. PURPORT The beginning of demoniac life is described herein. One tries to satisfy his lust, and when he cannot, anger and greed arise. A sane man who does not want to glide down to the species of demoniac life must try to give up these three enemies, which can kill the self to such an extent that there will be no possibility of liberation from this material entanglement.

It is that we should learn to pray even while we are dwelling on evil. Perhaps we are waging an interior battle over anger, or lust, or pride, or greed, or ambition. We need not isolate these things from prayer.

To protect life is the highest calling. To be a white knight dedicated to such cause is to be a paladin, a holy warrior in the All-Mother’s service. Some fight for greed, willing to kill another to take what they have; others for love or for lust, and still others for revenge or out of anger. Every day of life is a fight. You can acquiesce in these greater and lesser battles, and find yourself soon enough dead—or dead inside. Or you can fight for what is important to you, struggle for what matters, with word when possible and sword when necessary, and risk death to shape your world such as you would have it.

THE MULADHARA PERSONALITY Someone ruled by the Muladhara chakra is often confronted with life lessons about security—or rather, the desire to be physically and financially secure. The behavior of these people is often compared to that of ants, which ardently work for their queen. Their sense of self is often based on gaining approval or following the laws. Thus, for these people, their lessons are often about confronting and freeing themselves from greed, lust, sensuality, and anger. Like the earth element, Muladhara personalities are physically strong and productive. They often win competitively because of their drive and strength. THE SVADHISTHANA PERSONALITY A Svadhisthana individual is most likely devoted to the higher things in life—art, music, poetry, and the jewels of creativity. While beautiful, this lushness also presents temptation away from the spiritual path, with the major diversions involving sexuality, sensuality, and indulgence. A second-chakra person is likely to experience mood swings or emotional inconsistency. Desire is rooted in the second chakra, and can lead to love and the enjoyment of pleasures, but also to frivolity or just plain selfishness. The Svadhisthana path is often called the way of the butterfly, for life is full of so many joys, it can be hard to remain in one place for long. It is important to develop discipline to balance the compulsion to experience. THE MANIPURA PERSONALITY This chakra embraces the planes of karma (the past), dharma (one’s purpose), and the celestial plane. Its focus is to atone for one’s past errors. Manipura is the fire chakra, and people who dwell here tend to be fiery; the key to joy lies in the application of the heat. Is it used to avoid the past—or to work toward a positive future? Third-chakra people tend to be temperamental but are also able to commit to their goals. They are often driven by the need to be recognized and to succeed. The chief issue to confront is ego. By confronting issues of pride and control, the Manipura person is able to embrace the best features of its major animal, the ram. The ram can walk nimbly into the highest of mountaintops; so can the third-chakra individual. THE ANAHATA PERSONALITY When the lotus unfolds, the twelve petals invite the movement of energy in twelve directions. This activates twelve mental capabilities: hope, anxiety, endeavor, possessiveness, arrogance, incompetence, discrimination, egoism, lustfulness, fraudulence, indecision, and repentance (as described in the Mahanirvana Tantra, a detailing of Tantric rituals and practices, edited for Western audiences by Arthur Avalon (pen name of Sir John Woodroffe) in 1913).25 Twelve divinities in the form of sound assist with the process involved in confronting, dealing with, and healing one’s way through these twelve qualities. A heart-based person might find him- or herself greatly challenged by the so-called negative qualities that stir in the heart. However,

When we find the dark side of life too much to take, when we feel an urge to fight or escape from it all, perhaps we should visualize a lotus flower, the timeless Buddhist symbol for purity. While the lotus itself is clean and beautiful, it is nevertheless rooted in dirty, stinking mud. Unsightly as the mud may be, it provides the necessary nutrients for the lotus flower. Should the flower be disconnected from the mud, it cannot continue to live. Perhaps we should think of our greed, anger, and lust in the same way: they provide the necessary food for our soul.

On my days of pay I am grateful, I am grateful for everything, and it shows. The more we define ourselves in relation to the people around us, the more lost we are. We may never completely purge ourselves of envy, jealousy, greed, lust, anger, pride, and illusion, but that doesn’t mean we should ever stop trying.

Are we independent of our character defects? Are we making the decision, or is greed making the decision? Are we making the decision, or is pride making the decision? Am I making this decision freely, or is lust influencing me? Am I not, in fact, being jerked around by all my character defects, even when I’m sober? Am I in a constant state of frustration and anger, restless, irritable, discontent, sober? I’m being yanked around by all these forces—my life is a mess with all of this freedom! What am I going to do about that?

If you must have desire and greed, then you should desire love of God and be greedy to attain Him. He is the shepherd, 'feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms, holding them against his breast.' The true center of Rembrandt's painting is the hands of the father.
