After she had arranged her wares, she looked up at me. “What do you desire, O Noble Born?” I laughed, certain now that she had seen my act in front of the Snake House and, letting my accent match the coarseness of my dress, I again offered the copper.  “Nay, Noble One. You must choose.” She lifted a strand of red beads. “These to adorn your lady’s bosom?”             I shook my head. I wanted her lamp. But to steal the light from this woman ... I couldn’t ask for it. They are our primary competition, so we quickly divide and conquer to get the best stuff. I spot potential around the corner and hurry toward a box of books. Up close, they turn out to be old books with leather bindings. Mom has taught us all to read. Sometimes she makes us read to her for long stretches without stopping. Her head bobs along to a song you can't hear and you find yourself wondering what she sings in the shower these days – what she listens to before falling asleep. She used to joke that singing wasn't her forte, and that music wasn't her strength ; but you loved her Sunday morning humming ; her smile in your mouth, your fingers in her dress. She opens her eyes a little wider and then smiles and gives you a wave. There isn't much time for talking as you walk past each other and the green man begins to flash. You think her hair looks different, not the colour or the style, but the way it frames her face. She doesn't look so girlish when she says 'hey' and offers you a grin. And when she walks past, you can't help but turn and watch. You wonder who listens to her talk about the stars at night, or who carries her home when she's drunk. Sergeant Dix told me that at Fort Bragg they found that two to three days of constant tension was what it took to figure out if a soldier was going to break. Most who made it to the Special Forces Qualification Course could take anything the Army cared to throw at them for forty-eight hours. This was relatively easy during the mindless procedures — the hikes, runs, and repetitive drills that form the backbone of military training. Disassociation became much tougher, however, when the physical activity was paired with judgment calls and problem solving. If a soldier could engage his higher-order thinking while simultaneously ignoring the pain and willing his body to continue beyond fatigue, then he had a chance at making it to the end. If he couldn’t, then the strength of his back, heart, and lungs didn’t matter.  Dix had concluded that the Q-Course was as much about self-discovery as a prestigious shoulder patch.  Katya was in that discovery phase now.  The big question was what we’d do if she decided to quit. Another room contained a tall, narrow slave cage and a hanging leather sex sling, along with a bin of sex toys, each in its own presumably sterile plastic bag. Yet another room had a polished wooden St. Andrew’s cross, a full rack of more beautiful impact toys waiting at the ready. There was a tiled room, a converted bathroom, with a suspension rig hung over the tub. There was a stack of plump towels on the nearby counter, along with a basket of ear and nose plugs. Next to that was a room filled with doorless wardrobes stuffed with gowns, lingerie and high heeled shoes in various sizes, including some clearly meant for a man’s larger foot. Along a counter beneath a large mirror there were wig stands with wigs of varying lengths and colors, as well as a tray filled with makeup, creams and powders. There were several more playrooms with numerous and varied restraint devices, plenty of impact toys and lots of delicious rope and chain.
