Ensorcelled by that belling resonance, Conan crouched forgetful of all else, until its hypnotic power caused a strange replacement of faculties and perception, and sound created the illusion of sight. Conan was no longer aware of the voice, save as far-off rhythmical waves of sound. Transported beyond his age and his own individuality, he was seeing the transmutation of the being men called Khosatral Khel which crawled up from Night and the Abyss ages ago to clothe itself in the substance of the material universe.

Like the true Gujar woman that she was, her first love was the pine forest. Her most frequently repeated saying was, in Kashmiri, Un poshi teli, yeli vun poshi, which meant, “Forests come first, food comes second.” She saw herself as the guardian of the trees of the Forest of Khel and had to be propitiated every autumn when the villagers of Pachigam and Shirmal, who both foraged there, needed to stock up on firewood before the coming of the winter snows. “You wouldn’t want our children to freeze to death,” the villagers pleaded, and eventually she would concede that human children mattered more than living wood. She would guide the village men to those trees that were closest to death and these were the only ones she would allow them to fell.

This mixture confuses the lover so much that he can neither express his desire nor suppress it. Therefore, her eyes are like two poison cups causing lover’s death.

is this I-am-ness that is regained by meditation, experienced in Enlightenment and, in fact, retained for eternity. The importance of this truth can hardly be overstated.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
All actions in the universe are interwoven, interdependent, and fundamentally harmonious and creative. The way to simply live in your being is to accept the inevitable tide governing all actions and become one with the universal flow.

Loving life is the greatest act of reverence and worship one could ever bestow on the existence they have been granted. Life is a gift, meant to be enjoyed. It is the product of pure celebration and love, and it is for living joyfully.

Look at your surroundings with open, innocent eyes as you begin to observe life from a place of deep silence within you.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Observe without the observer, see without the seer, listen without the listener, eat without the eater, walk without the walker. This will completely transform the experience of witnessing. As your practice of ego-less observation becomes established and deepens, even your body will conform and adopt a posture of total stillness.

Fitting in with socially prescribed conventions and denying your own true nature is not really living.

Our thinking mind is fundamentally why we create the illusion that we are all distinct people; separation is the foundation of the ego’s identity.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Awareness is the inner God that unites all of us as one conscious entity. Whatever our individual experiences may be, deeper within us all lies a unified inner knowingness containing all experiences.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
By analogy, the universe is an immersive theatre. Intrigued as we are with the plot, the theatre of life is experienced within the human organism through thoughts, perception, sensations, and emotions. The experience is so powerful and alluring that we have become obsessed with our fictional characters and forgotten that we are also spectators seated within the greater whole. The mind has become self-aware, believing itself to be a real person, ignorant of the bigger picture and the true self!
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The more you practise staying in awareness, the more distance is gradually created between you and the theatrics of body and mind. This is the best way to enjoy the cosmic play: participating when appropriate, but also keeping an eye on the greater plot as it unfolds, laughing as you go, because nothing is supposed to make any sense anyway!
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Its one undeniable attribute is that it is completely unconstrained by our reality; rather, it is a shared universal consciousness that can be discerned within every living human.

An entity that knows only thought and emotion can merely create pale imitations of what is truly there.

the mind is only concerned with appearances, not reality.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Thoughts are whispers that run through the sky of awareness like passing clouds: we only notice the clouds and forget that we are the vast open sky.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
God is both the object and the subject. It is the seer and the seen. In particular, one who witnesses is the only true reality, and that witness is you.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The nature of Enlightenment is to know that you are not separate and apart from the rest of the universe, instead, you are one with the whole, you are both the experience and the one who experiences

At this point, I would like you to bring up the image of that individual or situation that caused you pain. Let it drift toward you, into this new, spacious, unthinking void you have created. As you begin to envisage them, you will realise that the division that used to separate you is no longer there. Instead, that person is now a part of your own existence, inextricably linked to you. After a while, miraculously, when you attempt to observe or recall this person you will find no contention or struggle within you. Your observation will carry no judgement, only truth and love. I want you to dive even deeper into your own vastness. Next, try to visualise and piece together the story your mind has attached to this person. By now, it will be almost impossible to feel any irritation with them, because the mind, along with its propensity to judge, to define, and to decide, has been subsumed in the sea of consciousness. Only the empty yet complete perception remains. Within

this vacuum, devoid of emotions you now recognise as petty, your love can flow outwards from your innermost heart. Allow kindness and empathy to expand in the direction of your former antagonist as if they are a part of you. True love is simply a question of connection. The kinship between all things is reality that easily heals the wounds of separation, when two separate objects become one in our minds.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Finally, I want you to become familiar with this tranquil, expansive space you have created within you, smell the fragrance of your quiet inner reality, appreciate the sound of the silence you find there, and come back to the outer world. Don’t just rouse yourself, though: return slowly, gradually, and bring that silence back with you. If the feeling of irritation with the other person persists, recall this perception you plucked from deep within you. Observe and visualise these intrusive, negative impressions once again from a place of unassailable calm. Watch your turbulent thoughts from a distance, without

you start to descend into your inner world and practice living in awareness, little by little, certain moments will begin to feel as if you stumbled into a magical dream. This is a sign that all the mental decoration and embellishment produced by your mind are starting to abandon you, leaving you in a timeless dimension. In that perfect moment, you will appear motionless, as if you are viewing life through a divine lens offering a glimpse of infinity. Now, you are evolving beyond your mind, you are transcending the dream world, now you are becoming the witness.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
If you can accept a dream dreamt during sleep as reality, then how can you be sure that your experiences while awake are not just part of another dreamed reality? When you get right down to it, the only real difference is that the waking state is a collective dream, a hallucination shared by everyone else in the world, whereas nighttime dreams are personal and products of your own imagination. This allows us to mistake consensus for truth.

fell in love with being alone, which is something I never imagined was even possible. As most people would agree, it is as difficult finding someone to love as it is being with someone. Strangely enough, both become much easier once you develop a talent for being content in your own company.

Self-judgement is a cruel torture. It begins with yourself, but pretty soon we use the same yardstick to judge others, too. This is why so-called saints, and moralistic and religious people in general, are some of the most judgemental people you will ever meet, projecting the discomfort they feel in their own selves onto others.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The solution to this is elegantly simple: just realise that the bounty of life is not to be divided into what is right and what is wrong.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
If you believe anger to be negative or sinful and circumstances cause you to become angry, your moral standards will only stir up a conflict in you. Anger has arisen in you despite the strength of your supposed convictions; whether you expressed or suppressed it makes no difference. In

moment, the anger was an inescapable urge. It’s unpleasant to feel anger, however, the bigger issue here is the disruption spawned deep within you. The battle between you and your anger, your denial, its resistance, will only create additional, unnecessary pain in you. Perversely, this means anger will never leave you. You will never be free of it. Acceptance and awareness, on the other hand, allow you to become anger itself. So, as the experience is witnessed, it is observed in its totality and consequently allowed to pass on. Choosing

The way to freeing yourself of guilt and hypocrisy is to accept all actions and impulses. Do not deny them, do not think of yourself as either good or bad. Within that acceptance of your own nature can be found a liberation, a unity with life on a much deeper and expansive level. Within this harmony, you become free of action, you come to know that you are neither a saint nor sinner because you are not the doer of any action. If there is anger, it is not you feeling it. If you are experiencing love, that is also not you. You are only the witness of all your behaviours.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
If, for example, you label an act as good, you will become attached to it and its consequences. This will inflate your ego and lead you further astray, regardless of any karmic consequences the deed itself might have.

In the end, the use of drugs is no substitute for diligent meditation. At best, they can provide you with a glimpse of what life is like once you’ve stilled the ego, but they’re not encouraged as a route to transformation.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
We often have random flashes of awareness throughout the day, times when we witness without identifying. For a brief moment, you have no idea who you are, what you are doing, where you find yourself, or who you are talking to. This can be highly disconcerting: your natural reaction is to panic and force yourself to remember your identity and what you know, define what gives meaning to the moment. What really happened was this: for a single, terrifying instant, you have caught a glimpse of another dimension! These events are not signs that you’re losing your mind, they are fleeting examples of what it feels like to awaken from the dream we call life.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
encourage you to search out these occasions in your daily life. Do not be afraid of them: they are divine in origin, instances of your own consciousness asserting itself. The world is suddenly illuminated in its primordial, ineffable reality. To have even a single glimpse beyond the familiar world of meaning constitutes an explosive awakening.

We can therefore define “intelligence” as the ability to resist the influence of others and the courage to be yourself.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
When we wrongly lay claim to a sense of superiority by mistaking intellectualism for intelligence, we close ourselves off from a whole world of knowledge and wonder.

When Socrates famously proposed that: “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing,” he was lauded as the smartest man in the world.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
A mystic accepts life as ultimately mysterious. They are the most intelligent among us because they acknowledge the universe as fundamentally unknowable. They pose no questions and seek no answer.

Do not squander your energy on trying to fix the system. Change only becomes possible after you have broken free from the programme. Organisations exist only because of the power you give them; they endure because of your allegiance and recognition.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Still, Sartre was an acutely observant intellectual, attentive enough to realise something very important: the way we normally perceive the present moment is highly peculiar. Logically, the impressions formed by our senses and minds should be all there is to reality, yet a little thought reveals these appearances to be something far less important. Sartre realised that, when you strip away the veneer of rationalisation we normally surround ourselves with, the appearance of an object or experience is ultimately absurd and meaningless. Each of our sensory and mental perceptions is like an impressionist painting: a personal interpretation, not a picture of what’s actually there.

We are trapped in an unending whirlpool of consumerism – how many advertisements have you seen recently for cars, gadgets, and fast foods nobody truly needs? Yet this treadmill of purchasing, devouring, and wanting more anchors our entire existence. The one and only reason we don’t simply ditch the whole exercise is that it stops us, in a limited way, from feeling bored with life. If you can muster the strength needed to step off this carousel existence and embrace the void of boredom, you will begin to discover that inaction is a forgotten art and silence is a marvellous place. It is where everything exists and undreamt-of wonders dwell. As you begin to enter more deeply into this tranquil way of being, you will learn to look upon your previous life as a foolish game and feel pity for everyone who is still addicted to it.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
If you dive deeply enough into boredom, it will lead you to Enlightenment.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Being able to talk about “important issues” tends to make one feel well-informed and appear intelligent, but this could not be further from the truth. Only fools waste their time scrutinising politics. By paying attention to the circus, they are simply helping to support and justify the travesty. Politics and the media need you to be preoccupied with your political opinion and that of others, or else the game is over. It does not matter where you fall in the political spectrum or what your line of reasoning is, because any kind of emotional or intellectual involvement is fuel for the fire when it comes to politics. Your attachment stokes the blaze of controversy and keeps it burning.

Everything we do is monotonous, uninspired, and unvarying, until we become aware of what is happening in the moment.

Yet whatever is happening right now is everything that matters.

If one cannot accept this present moment as fulfilment, the future will also be unfulfilling. The future is what you will have made of this instant. Ignoring the future constitutes the art of graceful living. If you want to change your destiny, throw yourself wholeheartedly into whatever this moment brings you. Forget that the future exists, even if death is approaching, even if the world is about to end. Stay rooted where you are, and nothing can touch you.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
When you accept the fact that you are bored, on the other hand, you break the chains of denial, automatically broadening your mental horizons. You no longer waste any effort running in circles trying to convince yourself that boredom isn’t such

large part of your existence. Seeing boredom for what it is constitutes a psychological breakthrough; once you understand it in its proper context, you are no longer bored. More precisely, boredom has taken on a new form. It has assumed its natural role as a vehicle for expanding your awareness to perceive reality and life differently.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
As your intelligence flowers beyond the mind’s confines, you will realise that life is tedious by nature, simply because we are potentially so much more than our current desires suggest. We can rise above and beyond effort, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of “more”. Chasing happiness is humiliating, demeaning, and pointless to an intelligent, self-realised person. Whichever way we look at it, life is a Sisyphean toil of repetitive suffering. You cannot escape your unhappiness by rolling that boulder faster or up a taller hill; the only way out is by expanding your consciousness and realising the true nature of your being.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Everyday life represents only a fraction of what we really are and can be. In fact, life as a whole is a bridge to another dimension of reality.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Yet, aren’t we just like a dog with a ball? We keep repeating the same events and obtaining the same results, not only day to day but for thousands of lives. A spark of intelligence flickers within us when we begin to recognise the futility of doing the same thing repeatedly.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
We are chronically bored because we are stuck
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
in a meaningless tedium of mechanically repeating the same actions every day, year after year. But we do not dare admit it, because facing the scale of the problem would mean risking insanity. Keeping yourself busy is just your attempt to deflect the unavoidable reality that you are totally and utterly tired of life.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Right now, at this very moment, you can sense the familiar hum of boredom underneath the sound of whatever you are doing. Like most people, you suppress this realisation with “things to do,” “people to see,” and “places to go.” But busy people are just avoiding boredom, not revelling in its absence; filling their lives because they are empty and not because they’re fascinated by their routines and hobbies.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Yet habit is a fool’s game; the whole point of this chapter is to provide an opportunity for you to break free of the curse of repetition. Humans are stuck in an irrepressible cycle of doing the same thing over and over again,

Being aware sets us free from addictions, habits, intrusive and recurring thoughts, and obsessions of all kinds. All at once,

the chain is broken and you are liberated from your own mind’s tyranny. When you live moment to moment, you are free and impartial. You are open to all possibilities. Whatever happens is always new, and is divine.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Despite the things I enjoyed on a material level, I began to realise that this kind of happiness was fleeting and vacuous. Feeling good was always dependent on continual effort.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Demands for evolution are nothing but egoic rants that keep you in the grip of the social hubbub at the expense of what’s important to you personally.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The acclaimed novel 1984 by English writer George Orwell outlines how systems of control can be put in place and how a population can be conditioned to accept any kind of authoritarian structure. This dystopian fable of the world and the powers that be has cast a prescient shadow over human discourse and society ever since.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
But while exposing these evils may provoke people to a certain extent, knowledge of what happens in the far-distant corridors of power can also be a barrier that prevents them from taking action in their own lives. Individual efforts cannot change the system, the system will improve only if the change starts with you.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
You can only focus on yourself.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Transformation is about waking up from the dream, and this can only be done when you make a conscious choice to reject society’s norms, concerns, and commentary. Politicians want you to accept personal responsibility for everything that’s wrong, to have an opinion about all that is happening in the world. The resulting anxiety only serves to keep you constantly restless and distracted from yourself. Once you have woken up, you’ll be exponentially more effective as an agent of change. If you really want to save the world, start by cultivating your own awareness; the first step to doing so is to decouple yourself from phenomena that only seem important.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Organised religions, regardless of their founders’ intentions, are perhaps the most entrenched enemy of our species’ evolution.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
With any luck, common sense and awareness will prevail against the fraudulent tyranny of religious superstitions that have been inflicted on us for epochs. Organised religions, regardless of their founders’ intentions, are perhaps the most entrenched enemy of our species’ evolution.

The only requirement is that you cultivate a place of quiet solitude within you, locate the silence and stillness within the cyclone, and find your sanctuary within the chaos.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Whoever you are, whatever you own, you can take it as gospel that the life you have today is as good as it gets. Coming to this realisation is a moment of pure, ecstatic joy: afterwards, it doesn’t matter what kind of people you’re surrounded by, how much you earn, or how others see you. If you look at life from the right perspective, you will see that nothing can top whatever is happening right now.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Rather, just be yourself. Be at ease with who you are and the world in which you live, and your original face will emerge. All objects are transient, all experiences are illusory. Whatever approach causes you to laugh at yourself and the world that you think is real, that also must not be taken seriously but instead appreciated for what it is, because knowing truth is an unserious affair.

KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
But, for many, life does not inspire joy; existence doesn’t animate their senses. They remain engrossed in practical, day-to-day matters while simultaneously trying their best to live in an imaginary future instead of the bountiful present.

Quieting the discriminatory mind in order to glimpse life more fully; this is what your time on earth is meant for, nothing else. I promise you: all that you have done up to this point and everything you will achieve after today will, in the end, all amount to nothing.

It’s amazing how far you get in life once you stop caring what happens to you. Abandon your prayers, dreams and expectations, embrace what you have, and welcome the unexpected. Be playful, be spontaneous and nonchalant, because nothing truly matters except your inner evolution.

KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
We are so immersed in a spiral of becoming that we don’t even realise that we have become a product of others’ fantasies, a reflection of the many images we are bombarded with through social media, television, and other false representations of society.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Social media can reasonably be said to breed a narcissistic culture, because we all want to receive validation from others.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The constantly flowing stream of thoughts that constitute the veil of illusion are the version of the world we perceive; we are really dealing with everyday life as a tangle of sensory impressions interpreted by the mind. This fabrication is not reality. That which exists beyond this veil is truth, which you are already looking at but can’t yet see. Recognising truth simply requires the absence of thoughts and language.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
Spirituality is the practice of taming our thoughts and eventually recognising this fact. As Osho once brilliantly summed it up: “The mind is a beautiful servant, but a dangerous master”. The mind is an indispensable aid to living, but we must also be aware that we are being controlled by our thoughts, led astray and misguided by them. We are all dictated to and subjugated by our own minds. Your mind is the only evil that exists, the only enemy that you must overcome. Everything in the world, the people around you, the timing of events, the course of destiny are all happening as they should. Only the mind turns them into misfortune, accident, and tragedy.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The voice in your head has a life of its own, thoughts are mostly impressions based on previous experiences, and they bombard you from random directions, at their own pace, without your permission.
KHEL KALYAN (Don't Meditate Just Be : The Pathless Path to Spiritual Enlightenment)
The sensory impressions we normally perceive are merely cursory and skin deep, but discerning the life lurking behind the surface of each being is what pleasure is all about. In the mind’s view, everything looks substantial. However, in truth, the world around you is a swirling soup of energy. Matter is not real in any truly profound sense. It is certainly not solid. The world’s shapes and objects have an appearance of firmness and durability, but what you see, touch
