The biblical record suggests that we need to rest not just one day a week but for longer times at longer intervals, up to the forty-nine-year cycle called the “jubilee” that allowed both land and farmers to be rejuvenated. But if the work of creating consistently leaves us depressed or drained, it is likely that we have somehow missed the path. Creation, even on a human scale, is meant to end with the glad exclamation, “It is very good.

In the Nazareth Manifesto, Jesus clearly intended his ministry to be understood in terms of ‘the year of the Lord’s favour’. Whether or not this was a literal Jubilee year, there is little doubt that he was announcing a Jubilee.

Charity fits the economy of scarcity, because it supports the blasphemous myth that the rich are rich because they deserve to be, and their riches are theirs to deal with as they please. With such charity, we are not worthy to tell the story of manna in the wilderness, to pretend to eat together at the Lord’s Supper, or claim the Year of Jubilee as our own.

A concrete embodiment of the jubilee commandment was evidenced in a rural church in Iowa during the "farm crisis." The banker in the town held mortgages on many farms. The banker and the farmers belonged to the same church. The banker could have foreclosed. He did not because, he said, "These are my neighbors and I want to live here a long time." He extended the loans and did not collect the interest that was rightly his. The pastor concluded, "He was practicing the law of the Jubilee year, and he did not even know it." The pastor might also have noted that the reason the banker could take such action is that his bank was a rare exception. It was locally and independently owned, not controlled by a larger Chicago banking system.

Slowly, God is opening my eyes to needs all around me. In Scripture, God revisits this issue of caring for the poor- an echo that repeats itself from Genesis to Revelation. The Bible acknowledges that the poor will always be part of society, but God takes on their cause. The Mosaic law of the Old Testament is filled with regulations to prevent and eliminate poverty. The poor were given the right to glean- to take produce from the unharvested edges of the fields, a portion of the tithes, and a daily wage. The law prevented permanent slavery by releasing Jewish bondsmen and women on the sabbatical and Jubilee year and forbade charging interest on loans. In one of his most tender acts, God made sure that the poor- the aliens, widows, and orphans- were all invited to the feasts.

28But if he does not have sufficient means to recover it, then what he sold shall remain in the hand of the buyer until the year of jubilee. In the jubilee it shall  vbe released, and  whe shall return to his property.

This is a prayer for Jubilee—that economic system instituted by God when God governed the people of Israel in Leviticus 25:8–55. Jubilee came every forty-nine years. In the fiftieth year, all debt was forgiven, all property returned, all enslaved people set free.

Israel was to the let the land rest every seven years. For 490 years, they disregarded this divine plan (Jeremiah 17:27). In 2 Chronicles 36:20-21, after God's people were taken away into exile, the land enjoyed its sabbath rest until seventy years were completed. God collects His debts.

"In the old holy books, there was a commandment that every fifty years, all debts were to be forgiven, all slaves were to be freed and all property returned. Because it was the very end of 1916. 1917 was coming. And 1917 was the year of Jubilee. And it just happened to be the same year that the British Empire would be placed in the position of determining the future of the land of Israel. And as the Jubilee concerns the return of one’s ancestral land, so world history would now turn to the Middle East and to the land of the ancient inheritance.

25:10. a jubilee: you shall go back, each to his possession. In the law of the jubilee, YHWH commands that every fifty years all property is to return to the original owners. This appears to be an economic program designed to prevent the feudal system, common in the rest of the ancient Near East, from developing in Israel. That is, it functions to prevent the establishment of a class of wealthy landowners at the top of the economic scale and a mass of landless peasants at the bottom. Every Israelite is to be apportioned some land (described in the books of Numbers and Joshua), and the deity commands that in every fiftieth year the system returns to where it started. If an Israelite has lost his ancestral land as a result of debt or calamity, he regains ownership of it in the jubilee year. Land is unalienable. Individuals can suffer difficult times, but there is a divinely decreed limit to their loss, and the nation as a whole can never degenerate into a two-tiered system of the very rich and the very poor.

Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) One of the distinguishing characteristics of Judaism, the religion of Jesus, is its sense of moral and social responsibility. After liberating the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt in the Exodus, God made explicit God's covenant with this people through Moses at Mount Sinai—“I am your God, and you are my people.” The primary conditions for being God's people were to worship God alone (monotheism and the prohibition of idolatry) and to create a just community (righteousness and justice). God insists that the Hebrews respect the rights and needs of the alien (or immigrant), the widow, and the orphan—that is, the marginal and vulnerable people—reminding them that they were once slaves in Egypt and that their God is the defender of the oppressed (Deut 24:17–18; 26:12–15; Ex 22:21–24; Jer 22:3).17 The laws regarding the forgiveness of debts during sabbatical years (Deut 15:1–11 and Lev 25:1–7) and the return to the original equality among the twelve tribes of Israel during the Jubilee year (Lev 25:8–17) symbolize the justice and community required of the Hebrew people.18 After the Hebrew people settled in the Promised Land, oppression came to characterize Israel. The God who had liberated the people from oppression in Egypt now sent prophets who called them to adhere to the requirements of the covenant or face the fate of the Egyptians—destruction. The Hebrew prophets (eighth century to sixth century B.C.E.), such as Amos, Micah, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, accused the people of infidelity to the covenant because of their idolatry and the social injustice they created.19 The warnings and the promises of the prophets remind each generation of God's passion for justice and God's faithful love. In Judaism, one's relationship with God (faith) affects one's relationship with others, the community, and the earth (justice).20 Faith and justice are relational, both personally and communally.

The prophetic vision of the Temple was revealed to Ezekiel on Yom Kippur in the year 3352 (408 B.C.E.), a Jubilee Year.6 On Yom Kippur in the Jubilee Year, Jewish slaves are freed and land in Israel that had been sold during the previous forty-nine years, is returned to its original tribal ownership.

The most famous of these is the Law of Jubilee: a law that stipulated that all debts would be automatically cancelled “in the Sabbath year” (that is, after seven years had passed), and that all who languished in bondage owing to such debts would be released.

The King James Bible, which most Pennsylvanians would have been using, describes the central moment as an act of economic liberation: “Ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.” But there’s a problem with this translation. The Hebrew word deror, which the King James renders as liberty, is more precisely translated as release. Modern Bibles usually translate Leviticus 25:10 as “You shall proclaim release throughout the land,” stressing that the liberation is a freeing from economic duress, not political servitude. Considering all that would befall Isaac Norris’s bell, the one misfortune that proved most beneficial was preventing America’s treasured icon from being called … the Release Bell.

The year of Jubilee was God’s way of protecting against the rich getting too rich and the poor getting too poor.

A lunar year is 354 2/3rddays in length while a solar year is 365 ¼ days.

Almost exactly in the middle is the prophetic 360 day year.

The Jubilee was a sort of mandatory rebalancing of the financial system. Once every fifty years it was to coincide with Yom Kippur, our Day of Atonement, the most solemn and holy day of our year.” Jacob shook his head. “But what could that have to do with Yeshua? And what is the connection between this Old Testament custom and the present?

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. (Galatians 3:16–18)

Even though he was willing to sacrifice his only son, he knew that YHWH would provide a substitution. Not only did YHWH provide that substitution for Isaac, but exactly forty Jubilee cycles later, he provided his very own Son, Yeshua, to make atonement for all mankind. Then to make sure we all got the point, the final year of that fortieth Jubilee cycle saw the last atonement sacrifice in the temple of Jerusalem. Zane lightly tapped his pencil on desk. Incredible, he thought. Forty Jubilees from the first “Lamb of God” provided in substitution for Isaac until the last “Lamb of God” provided for all mankind. The words of John the Baptist took on new meaning for Zane: “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29 )

So if I understand you correctly, one Jubilee cycle would be fifty years, the second cycle would be ninety-nine years, and the third cycle one hundred and forty-eight? Do I have that right?” “Perfect,” Weidenhjelm said in satisfaction. “You got it exactly right.” After a moment of thought Zane replied, “This makes for quite a unique cycle, doesn’t it?

Galatians: “‘Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.’ In the book of Hebrews chapter 12, it talks about Jesus as the ‘guarantor of the new covenant.

am familiar with the biblical concept of the ‘times of the Gentiles,’ but what is a final Jubilee?” “I’m not sure about that, but a biblical Yowbel, or Jubilee as most know it, is a cycle of fifty years which culminate in a year of release. To use the definition in Leviticus 25, a Jubilee is seven cycles of seven years, and then the year following these forty-nine years is the Jubilee.” Rachael interjected, “During the Jubilee, YHWH commanded all debts to be forgiven and slaves set free. It was a mandatory economic recalibration, so to speak. The Bible goes on to explain this Yowbel was given so the people would not abuse each other.

Assuming for the present that there is a connection as he believes, his statement implies that we are living in the final Jubilee, which means there are fifty or fewer years until the times of the Gentiles are completed. His statement also implies that the people he represents have specific plans to accomplish before the final Jubilee is completed. In my studies, I am not aware of anyone making a connection between the Jubilee cycles and the times of the Gentiles. If there is a connection, it raises some intriguing possibilities.

yowbel was the Hebrew word for a ram’s horn trumpet. The first occurrence of the word in the Scripture was when YHWH shouted out the Ten Commandments verbally to Israel in the wilderness. That was before he wrote the law on the tables of stone. The next thirteen occurrences of the word were in relation to the Jubilee cycle as given to Moses in Leviticus 25. This was, as he had already learned, a cycle of fifty years which ended in the release of slaves and the forgiveness of debts. How could the Jubilee be connected to the 13th Enumeration?

I believe the synchronized Jubilee cycle is the correct method. I believe in the congruency of the biblical record. YHWH gave a continuous repeating weekly Sabbath cycle, and I see no compelling argument in Leviticus 25 to believe his method of counting a yearly Sabbath cycle is any different. Why would the Scripture mention seven sets of seven years, implying seven Sabbath cycles, if the cycle was not continuous? He could have just said ‘count fifty years.

Just as Jonah had warned the Ninevites with the sign of his resurrection from the belly of the fish, so the Nazarene rabbi had given his father’s generation the same sign. Jonah had given the Ninevites forty days to repent. If Jorah’s calculations were correct, this year marked the fortieth since the Nazarene’s warning of impending calamity.

beginnings of their present sorrows to the day the Nazarene had been crucified by the Romans. There was a great darkness that day, and the temple curtain was rent in two. The rabbis had recorded that every day for forty years since then, the menorah had gone out, and the temple gates would be found open in the morning no matter the precautions taken. Each year on Yom Kippur the crimson thread no longer turned white, and when casting lots for the azazel scapegoat, the black stone always turned up. For forty years, only the black stone! It was impossible, but it had happened.

The number forty has special significance in the Old Testament as it relates to Israel and the Promised Land. Moses was forty years old when he made his first attempt to deliver Israel from the oppression of Egypt. His efforts were rejected, and he fled to the wilderness of Midian for forty years. There he tended sheep for Jethro and his seven daughters. At the end of those forty years, YHWH called him from the burning bush and told him it was time to deliver Israel. Then after the Exodus, because of their lack of faith, they wandered in the wilderness for another forty years. During these forty years, Israel ate manna, the ‘bread of heaven.’ Forty years later, after that entire generation had passed away, Israel finally entered the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, the Old Testament’s Yeshua.

Almost forty Jubilees ago, YHWH sent Yeshua to deliver Israel. We rejected him, and he was crucified. For forty days after his resurrection he taught them concerning the kingdom of God, and then he was taken up to heaven. Forty years later the temple was destroyed, and the last sacrifice was offered. Since the destruction of Jerusalem, almost forty Jubilees have passed.

the past forty Jubilees, Yeshua has been that ‘bread of heaven’ during what many theologians call the Church Age. Leviticus 25 states that a Jubilee is seven sets of seven years, and the following or fiftieth year is the Jubilee. On the Day of Atonement in this fiftieth year, all debts are forgiven and all slaves are to go free. This reset, so to speak, kept commerce and trade in balance. Before I go any further, let me give you a brief explanation of both schools of thought on how to count the yearly Jubilee.

One counts the Jubilee as interrupting the yearly Sabbath cycle. In this method, you have seven sets of seven years followed by a fiftieth year, which then resets the count. The other school of thought counts the Jubilee as synchronized with the Sabbath cycle. In this method, the first and the last year of the Jubilee cycle overlap once every fifty years.

Another point in favor of a synchronized yearly Sabbath cycle is the Feast of Firstfruits.” Glancing at Zane, he said, “Or Pentecost, as you would call it in English. Much more successful as an individual short story is Karl Schroeder’s ‘‘Jubilee’’, posted on Tor.com on February 26. This has at its core another fascinating idea, one that I understand is also at the core of Schroeder’s new novel Lockstep – a social system whereby whole communities go into a synchronized pattern of hibernation and awakening that allows them to wait out the hundreds or even thousands of years it takes for spaceships to travel between the stars (no Faster Than Light travel or wormhole shortcuts in Schroeder’s scenario) without falling hopelessly behind the space travelers, thus making it possible to maintain social continuity even at interstellar distances.

Being a holy people included seeking justice. The Sabbath and Jubilee Year practices gave everyone equal rights, freedom, and second chances. Slaves would be freed, and land would be restored to the family that originally owned it. Unfortunately, rich landowners eventually claimed the land, and this plan for equality was forgotten. This injustice is one reason that the nation of Israel did not last. Even today God calls his people to seek justice and mercy for everyone.

The Sabbath and Year of Jubilee principles apply to believers every day of every year. The sacrifice that Jesus made for us gives us rest from working to try to earn God’s approval. It also canceled our sin debt, which we could never have repaid. But through that transaction, we incurred another debt. Since we have experienced God’s love and mercy through Jesus Christ, we have a lifelong obligation to share that love with everyone we meet. If we’re thankful that God has settled our sin debt, we’ll be glad to make a payment on our debt of love every day.

Today’s legal system is based on the Roman Empire’s legal philosophy upholding the sanctity of debt, not its cancellation. Instead of protecting debtors from losing their property and status, the main concern is with saving creditors from loss, as if this is a prerequisite for economic stability and growth. Moral blame is placed on debtors, as if their arrears are a personal choice rather than stemming from economic strains that compel them to run into debt simply to survive.

Babylonian scribes were taught the basic mathematical principle of compound interest, whereby the volume of debt increases exponentially, much faster than the rural economy’s ability to pay.ii That is the basic dynamic of debt: to accrue and intrude increasingly into the economy, absorbing the surplus and transferring land and even the personal liberty of debtors to creditors.

25:25,35,39. when your brother will be low. Meaning: when your fellow Israelite will be so poor that he has difficulty holding onto his land. It has long been noted that the three times that this phrase occurs in this chapter reflect three stages of increasing hardship. In the first, the person has to sell his land. In the second, he has both lost his land and is without money. And in the third, he himself is sold (or sells himself) into servitude. And at each stage, the man's fellow Israelite is commanded to help him. If he has to sell his land, one must redeem it for him and then give it back to him in the jubilee year. If he is without money, one must lend him money without any charge or interest. And if he is sold, one must not treat him as a slave. Here the units of laws convey the specific requirements while the arrangement conveys the basic principle, namely, that as one's brother's need increases, so does one's responsibility to help him. Further, one must thus help one's fellow as a matter of law. This chapter never speaks of charity, nor does it appeal to one's feelings of compassion or generosity. An unfortunate Israelite need not feel degraded to be poor nor ashamed to be pitied. Economic suffering is rather treated as a reality of life, which one is required by law to remedy. The poor man thus can know that his brother is helping him because the system requires brothers to help one another and that, if the shoe were on the other foot, he would do the same for his brother. This is not to say that the text denies or discourages feelings of compassion, but only that the fulfillment of the law is not made dependent upon the presence or absence of such feelings.

What did it mean for Jesus to use jubilee language in his ministry’s mission statement? Scholars conclude that Jubilee was probably not practiced in Israel’s history, but if it had been, the economic result would have been dramatic.4 Every fifty years, land would have been returned to the smaller households or family units, which would mean that clan lands could not be controlled by one or two powerful families. Under this practice, oppression of the poor would have been severely limited. That means that from beginning to end—from “good news to the poor” to “year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18–19)—Jesus outlines a mission that offers relief to the poor and oppressed.

An understanding of the jubilee system which Jehovah inaugurated with Israel throws a great light upon the immediate future events. The Scriptures clearly show that Israel, while God dealt with them for more than eighteen centuries, was a typical people. Their law was typical, foreshadowing greater and better things to come. The Lord commanded Moses to institute the Sabbath system the year that Israel entered the land of Canaan, which was 1575 years before A.D.1 (Leviticus 25:1-12), and that every fiftieth year should be unto them a year of jubilee. This was done on the tenth day of the seventh month, the day of atonement. 'And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof; it shall be a jubilee unto you and ye shall return every man unto his possessions and ye shall return every man unto his family'. Other Scriptures show that there were to be seventy jubilees kept (Jeremiah 25:11; 2 Chronicles 36:27-21). A simple calculation of these jubilees brings us to this important fact: Seventy jubilees of fifty years would be a total of 3500 years. That period of time beginning in 1575 before A.D. 1 of necessity would end in the fall of the year 1925, at which time the type ends and the great antitype must begin. [...] The chief thing to be restored is the human race to life; and since other Scriptures definitely fix the fact that there will be a resurrection of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other faithful ones of old, and that these will have the first favor, we may expect 1925 to witness the return of these faithful men of Israel from the condition of death, being resurrected and fully restored to perfect humanity and made the visible, legal representatives of the new order of things on earth.

During the Blitz of 1940–1941, for example, as German bombs rained down on London, isolated populations of Culex mosquitoes were confined to the air-raid tunnel shelters of the Underground Tube along with the city’s resilient citizens. These trapped mosquitoes quickly adapted to feed on mice, rats, and humans instead of birds and are now a species of mosquito distinct from their aboveground parental counterparts.* What should have taken thousands of years of evolution was accomplished by these mining sapper mosquitoes in less than one hundred years. “In another 100 years time,” jokes Richard Jones, former president of the British Entomological and Natural History Society, “there may be separate Circle Line, Metropolitan Line and Jubilee Line mosquito species in the tunnels below London.

The end of the age was AD 75 on their calendar. An age lasts two thousand years. An age is made up of four five-hundred-year periods called “onahs.” Each five-hundred-year period is made up of ten fifty-year periods called “jubilees.” Each jubilee is made up of seven seven-year periods called “shemitahs.” There are seven shemitahs and then a jubilee year, making fifty total.

The text says one shemitah after the end of the ninth jubilee, so, AD 25 plus seven years would bring us to AD 32. This is the year the Melchizedekian Messiah, Jesus Christ, died for our sins.

The Book of Jubilees follows a solar calendar of 364 days per year, to which it refers as a “complete year”, and so is 1 Enoch 71 which additionally refers to the eastern six gates and points to the solar revolution northwards and eastwards between them as I have demonstrated on the circular zodiac of Dendera. The Book of Enoch goes on with the narrative acknowledging the presence of four days (in Chapter 74) which are not counted in the computation of the year during the monthly reckoning (as in the case with my discovery of the six days on the zodiac which I called, the Eastern Portals); the year hence according to both books consists of 364 days. This is a major evidence of the tampered narrative of the Bible which has implanted ancient Egyptian system of theology according to the ancient Egyptian calendar which I was able to decipher from the zodiac of Dendera.

If debts are not written down, they will expand and become a lever for creditors to pry away land and income from the indebted economy at large. That is why debt cancellations to save rural economies from insolvency were deemed sacred from Sumer and Babylonia through the Bible.

Yet for thousands of years, economic polarization was reversed by cancelling debts and restoring land tenure to smallholders who cultivated the land, fought in the army, paid taxes and/or performed corvée labor duties.

Today’s mainstream political and economic theories deny a positive role for government policy to constrain the large-scale concentration of wealth.

He recognizes that the inherent tendency of history is for the wealthy to win out and make society increasingly unequal. This argument also has been made by Thomas Piketty and based largely on the inheritance of great fortunes

The basic principle that should guide economic policy is recognition that debts which can’t be paid, won’t be. The great political question is, how won’t they be paid?

The creditors’ objective is to replace the customary right of citizens to self-support by its opposite principle: the right of creditors to foreclose on the property and means of livelihood pledged as collateral (or to buy it at distress prices), and to make these transfers irreversible.

If your celebrity and music-industry friends want to flood social media with GOTV messages, let them. It makes them feel important and it’s the cheapest outsourcing you can get. Just don’t build your models on the idea that you’re going to spike young voter turnout beyond 20 percent. The problem with chasing the youth vote is threefold: First, they’re unlikely to be registered. You have to devote a lot of work to going out, grabbing them, registering them, educating them, and motivating them to go out and vote. If they were established but less active voters, you’d have voter history and other data to work with. There are lower-effort, lower-cost ways to make this work. Second, they’re not conditioned to vote; that November morning is much more likely to involve regret at not finishing a paper than missing a vote. Third, and finally, a meaningful fraction of the national youth vote overall is located in California. Its gigantic population skews the number, and since the Golden State’s Electoral College outcome is never in doubt, it doesn’t matter. What’s our motto, kids? “The Electoral College is the only game in town.” This year, the Democrats have been racing to win the Free Shit election with young voters by promising to make college “free” (a word that makes any economic conservative lower their glasses, put down the brandy snifter, and arch an eyebrow) and to forgive $1.53 trillion gazillion dollars of student loan debt. Set aside that the rising price of college is what happens to everything subsidized or guaranteed by the government.17 Set aside that those subsidies cause college costs to wildly exceed the rate of inflation across the board, and that it sucks to have $200k in student loan debt for your degree in Intersectional Yodeling. Set aside that the college loan system is run by predatory asswipes. The big miss here is a massive policy disconnect—a student-loan jubilee would be a massive subsidy to white, upper-middle-class people in their mid-thirties to late forties. I’m not saying Democrats shouldn’t try to appeal to young voters on some level, but I want them to have a realistic expectation about just how hard it is to move those numbers in sufficient volume in the key Electoral College states. When I asked one of the smartest electoral modeling brains in the business about this issue, he flooded me with an inbox of spreadsheets and data points.
