We played it when I went over there, and I ended up staying until four in the morning. Seriously, it was intense.” He shrugs. “We’re the Lorris crime syndicate.”

“What is happening?” I burst out. “You guys are best friends now?”

The subtractions that we find in innovative fictions (even when those subtractions, as in Joyce's work, are followed by further ornamentations and encrustations) are there to facilitate the simulation of consciousness. What is subtracted is the significance and meaning designed to let us classify an experience without entering into it. Doing without such things opens the door wider for experience, putting the reader in a position where they are experiencing fiction in lieu of understanding it.
By paying more attention to what we leave out than to how readers are going to interpret or work after the fact, we refuse to let fiction be assimilable, digestible, and safe. We keep it from being mere fodder for criticism and instead accept it as valid, vital experience.

The feeling of out-flowing personal power so characteristic of the caregiving woman is quite different from the having of any actual power in the world. There is no doubt that this sense of personal efficacy provides some compensation for the extra-domestic power women are typically denied: If one cannot be a king oneself, being a confidante of kings may be the next best thing. Me voici donc entrant dans le cimetière Montmartre, et tout à coup imprégné de tristesse, d’une tristesse qui ne faisait pas trop, de mal, d’ailleurs, une de ces tristesses qui vous font penser, quand on se porte bien : « Ça n’est pas drôle, cet endroit-là, mais le moment n’en est pas encore venu pour moi… »
L’impression de l’automne, de cette humidité tiède qui sent la mort des feuilles et le soleil affaibli, fatigué, anémique, aggravait en la poétisant la sensation de solitude et de fin définitive flottant sur ce lieu, qui sent la mort des hommes.

Il m'a répondu : "Pourquoi voudrais-tu perdre ton temps pour un jargon méprisé par Dieu lui-même ? Et, continuant : "Le Créateur a donné à chaque peuple une langue mais, à la fin, il a dû se rendre compte que l'un d'entre deux a été oublié. Il trouva la solution en ramassant les restes des langues éparpillées sur le sol, et offrit cette mixture, ne pouvant faire autrement, à ce bon peuple Amazigh".
- "On dénonce même Dieu", ai-je rétorqué, furieux. "Mais tu viens de donner la preuve de l'universalité de la langue berbère."
- "Universelle!" plaisanta mon autre voisin... "Elle n'est même pas dans les archives".
La discussion devient générale, les uns pour, les autres... Sa Majesté, pour mettre fin à toutes nos grandes phrases, posa cette question à El-Fassi :
- "Le berbère est-il une langue, oui ou non ?"
- "A la réflexion, oui, Majesté; il a ses contes et ses légendes, sa poésie, et ses structures ne peuvent être niées".
- "Alors," conclut Sa Majesté, "nous aborderons cette question dans une vingtaine d'années. Contentons-nous, maintenant, de consolider notre unité.

L'homme, l'épaule solide, anti-métaphysique, dissipateur d'idées tourmentantes, qu'elle se marie donc ça la calmera, tes boutons même disparaîtront, je ris forcément, obscurément j'y crois. Mariage, "accomplissement", je marche. Quelquefois je songe qu'il est égoïste et qu'il ne s'intéresse guère à ce que je fais, moi je lis ses livres de sociologie, jamais il n'ouvre les miens, Breton ou Aragon. Alors la sagesse des femmes vient à mon secours : "Tous les hommes sont égoïstes." Mais aussi les principes moraux : "Accepter l'autre dans son altérité", tous les langages peuvent se rejoindre quand on veut.
