I am crossing the lawn to the robed man with the gasoline. He sees me. Confusion passes over his face. An injured young girl, limping toward him. A girl full of unseen fire. We are both fifty feet from the torch, in opposite directions. I pick up my pace, not feeling my injuries. I will beat him, even if it breaks me. He realizes what I am doing, what I am moving toward. We both run. I do not listen to Ben yelling to me. I see but do not see another hooded man coming from behind and Ben intercepting him. I do not feel the pain in my foot or the raspy shallow breaths in my throat, the smoke in my nose and mouth and eyes. All I see is the torch in front of me—a beacon, a guiding star, the one thing I can do for this place against the people who are trying to destroy it. My people. My people doing this. Then I am there, next to the torch, my arm stretched toward it. The man in the robe is here too, feet from me. He grabs it first, and I lift Cleo’s gun, point it at his head. He shoves his elbow into my arm, and the gun drops to the ground. He kicks it away from us. He smiles, holds the torch between us so I can see his face in the firelight. And … Pale skin. Soft. A beer belly beneath the folds of his robe. He has no facial hair, no hair on top of his head. He wears thin metal glasses. He sweats in the heat, his forehead and his lip. The kind of man I could have seen at church a hundred times, the kind of man whose hand I would have taken. A limp handshake, a short-sleeved button-down. Peace be with you. Not some terrible harbinger of God or the night. Not scary or powerful. Not anything.
