Helen laid out our fall agenda: we’d conduct a survey, we’d lead “cottage groups” with church members about the search. We’d receive anti-oppression training and create a “packet.” As recording secretary, I’d write newsletter squibs to keep the congregation informed of our progress. Clearly, my vision of the search committee as a series of intense theological discussions was a chimera!

The bad news diet. I used to spend an hour or two a day watching or reading the news. It is impossible to pick up a paper or watch the news without thinking the sky is falling, even when it is not falling around you. It was making me slightly depressed. I have gone to a strict no more than 10 minutes per day bad news diet, and let me tell you, it has done wonders for my outlook on life and business.

When you drink water from a cup, it becomes part of you. When water falls on you like rain, it evaporates a few minutes later. Similarly, thoughts can be consumed or dismissed. Is this thought nourishing? Is this feeling something you should drink? Or is it more like getting caught in the rain? You'll always feel the rain, but you don't have to drink the rain. You can let the thought pass and in a few moments the sun will return. You don't have to claim everything you feel.
