Ezekiel 37, a passage frequently misread by people who think the prophet is discussing the future resurrection of individuals at the end of time. He is not. He is explicitly referring to the restoration of the nation of Judah after its destruction.

Ezekiel chapter 37. The only need of Ezekiel was to be in the Spirit, and while he was in the Spirit it came to him to prophesy to the dry bones and say, “O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord” (Ezek. 37:4). As he prophesies according to the Lord’s command he sees an “exceeding great army” rising up about him. The prophet obeyed God’s command, and all we have to do is exactly this—obey God. The nation’s last stand took place on a desert mountain fortress called Masada. It was there that her last soldiers would meet their end. So Masada became the grave of ancient Israel. But then, after two thousand years, the nation of Israel was resurrected by the hand of God as foretold in the vision of dry bones. The people were resurrected, the cities were resurrected, and the Israeli soldier was resurrected. And then the resurrected nation decided to return to its ancient grave.” “To Masada? Why?” “To excavate it, to dig it up. The man in charge of the excavation was one of the nation’s most famous soldiers and archaeologists. And Israeli soldiers helped in the excavation. So now on the grave of Israel’s ancient soldiers walked her resurrected soldiers to see what lay hidden in its ruins.” “And what was hidden in the ruins?” “A prophetic mystery . . . a Scripture. It had been buried and hidden there for almost two thousand years.” “And what did it say?” “It was from the Book of Ezekiel, the section that contained the prophecy of the Valley of Dry Bones: ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.”’ So the prophecy was hidden right there in Israel’s ancient grave, waiting for ages for the day that it would be uncovered, the day when its words would be fulfilled and the nation resurrected from its grave. God wanted to hear Ezekiel’s answer, just as He sometimes wants us to carefully assess the true potential in whatever difficult situation lies before us. Perhaps we’ve concluded that a way out or a remedy or a resolution is impossible. Our condition or our circumstances seem hopeless. But is that really the case? God was challenging Ezekiel to carefully evaluate the situation before him. He required a response, so of course Ezekiel gave Him one: “And I answered, ‘O Lord GOD, you know’ ” (37:3).

I agree with Art Katz who said, “The State of Israel exists not for its success but for its necessary failure;”[305] that is, that through the “death”[306] of the unbelieving and unrepentant political State the glorious “resurrection” of the prophetically promised Nation will come.[307] This is the inner-most meaning of Ezekiel’s vision of the “Valley of the Dry Bones” in Ezekiel 37.

Chapter 37 Ezekiel records a dramatic vision from the Lord of a valley full of dry bones, upon which sinews appear, and then flesh, and then breath, as the dry bones become people who “lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.” The Lord then explains to Ezekiel the meaning of the dry bones vision: “Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’  Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people…I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD …and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.’” (Ezekiel 37:11-14). Lest anyone miss what He was telling Ezekiel, verse 21 reads: “And say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.

My God! How could you allow this woman to get worse, when she is doing all she can to get better? What in the world is going on? Have you ever wondered the same in your sin predicament as you make valiant efforts to overcome temptation? Have you gone to teacher-after-teacher, and pastor-after-pastor, searching for a remedy to your addiction to drugs, stealing, illicit sex, liquor, gambling, or evil entertainments? Did you get better, or did you get progressively worse over the years? Well, this woman, now an outcast from Jewish society due to the fact that her vaginal bleeding made her ceremonially unclean, and excluded from attendance of temple services and many other regular activities, knew that the Master was nearby. With all the faith she had, she crawled through the crowd so she…could…just…touch, the blue hem/tassel of His garment. She believed that if she could simply touch the border of His garment. Which represented the Throne of God, and His holy Ten Commandment Law (Exodus 24:9-10; Ezekiel 1:26; Numbers 15:37-41), she would be whole. So, that she did!

February 19 MORNING “Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them.” — Ezekiel 36:37 PRAYER is the forerunner of mercy. Turn to sacred history, and you will find that scarcely ever did a great mercy come to this world unheralded by supplication. You have found this true in your own personal experience. God has given you many an unsolicited favour, but still great prayer has always been the prelude of great mercy with you. When you first found peace through the blood of the cross, you had been praying much, and earnestly interceding with God that He would remove your doubts, and deliver you from your distresses. Your assurance was the result of prayer. When at any time you have had high and rapturous joys, you have been obliged to look upon them as answers to your prayers. When you have had great deliverances out of sore troubles, and mighty helps in great dangers, you have been able to say, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Prayer is always the preface to blessing. It goes before the blessing as the blessing’s shadow. When the sunlight of God’s mercies rises upon our necessities, it casts the shadow of prayer far down upon the plain. Or, to use another illustration, when God piles up a hill of mercies, He Himself shines behind them, and He casts on our spirits the shadow of prayer, so that we may rest certain, if we are much in prayer, our pleadings are the shadows of mercy. Prayer is thus connected with the blessing to show us the value of it. If we had the blessings without asking for them, we should think them common things; but prayer makes our mercies more precious than diamonds. The things we ask for are precious, but we do not realize their preciousness until we have sought for them earnestly. “Prayer makes the darken’d cloud withdraw; Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw; Gives exercise to faith and love; Brings every blessing from above.

The Bible is the voice of God in print—the Spirit’s breath written down in such a way that we can take it in and live by it. Which is why whenever you separate the Word of God from a relationship with God, it may not have the life-giving effect of the Spirit on you that you hoped it would. You need a relationship with God for His words to take life in you. You want the living Word to be connected to the written Word so that the breath of God’s Spirit can bring life into your dryness, circumstances, situations, and environment (Ezekiel 37:1-14). The Spirit is the oxygen tank that secures our survival in the waters of a wicked world.

EZEKIEL 33 MARKS A TURNING POINT in the book. Chapters 33—37 record oracles related to the fall of Jerusalem. Although the warnings and calls for repentance continue, one now hears a rising note of comfort. As long as the exiles found it difficult to believe that Jerusalem could fall, Ezekiel was full of warning. Once the fall has taken place, God in his mercy gives Ezekiel words that will comfort the exilic community, nurture their faith, and steel their minds and wills.

THE STAGGERING QUESTION “He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’” Ezekiel 37:3     Can a sinner be turned into a saint? Can a twisted life be made right? There is only one appropriate answer—“O Lord God, You know” (37:3).

When you pray in the Spirit, the dynamic you are looking for isn’t exactly to speak in tongues yeah, what you really should be after is a connection; to align with; to touch top and base; to plug into the will and presence of God and in turn receive the deep current of the spirit flowing through you. When this happens, know that the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and how you pray, whether in unknown tongues (Acts 2:4), words (Ezekiel 37:1-14) or even in a silence that’s filled with tears (1 Samuel 1:13-15) - is ultimately led by the Spirit.

Another important feature in Jewish mysticism was the story told in the book of Exodus in which Moses requests to see God face-to-face (Exod. 33:17–24), something the Jewish people believed to be beyond the limits of human life. In this narrative that request is denied, but Moses is allowed to gaze on God’s back as God goes around the bend in the mountain. Mystics could see only where God had been. Still another focus of Jewish mysticism was the vision attributed to Isaiah in which the prophet was said to have seen God “high and lifted up,” surrounded by angelic beings who covered God’s face lest the vision be more than Isaiah could absorb (Isa. 6:5). Ezekiel spoke of seeing a wheel in the sky (Ezek. 1:15ff) and of seeing his nation revived from the status of a valley filled with dead, dry bones into a spirit-filled, living people called to a new dimension of life by the wind of the spirit that blew over the valley (Ezek. 37). Daniel’s vision in the Temple (Dan. 7) took the title “son of man,” which had originally meant only a human being, and used it to envision one who had entered into divinity. Daniel, who referred to God as the “Ancient of Days,” now saw God revealed in this human form. A Jewish mystical tradition had certainly developed by the first century, and it centered on the idea of God’s enthronement.

If we know the truth through His eyes, we know Christ Himself and have a growing, freeing relationship with Him, a relationship that overshadows our life experiences and focuses on His presence, not past hurts and misunderstandings. Jesus is the only truth that is totally trustworthy, valid, and accurate. So if we see the truth on a spiritual realm, we see Him, not the details of the story. When I can see Jesus in my story and change my focus from myself to Him and His truth, details fade, feelings diminish, and all that remains is His wholeness, presence, and peace. The Foundation of This Book This book is based on Ezekiel 37:1-14, emphasizing the transformation of dry bones scattered throughout a desolate valley. According to Scripture, these old, dry bones were miraculously changed into living, breathing beings with life and hope in the Lord. The “valley of old, dry bones” referred to in Ezekiel represents our perspective of past and present events, with all the details, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs attached. As individuals, we each have a personal viewpoint of our experiences that includes our emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. Without God’s intervention and transformation, we are stuck in these views or personal truths, just like the dry bones were stuck in that isolated valley. Until a person sees and feels the hopelessness of personal interpretations, they will be stuck in a self-made prison with their own beliefs and no hope for release. Freedom comes from the pursuit of mixing their two truths, human and spiritual,
