During the Peloponnesian War a brave Athenian soldier fell desperately in love with the daughter of his commander. He asked for her hand in marriage but she had to refuse. The soldier swore to destroy the dark force and free his beloved from her vow. He traveled day and night until he came to the western side of the river Oceanus. There he passed through groves of barren willows and poplars until he found the cave that led to Tartarus, the land of the dead. He entered it, and when he reached the impenetrable darkness, demons swarmed around him. A towering black cloud surged toward him. He knew it was the Atrox. But instead of trembling with fear, he became intoxicated with his own bravery; he alone had the courage to face the Atrox. If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Except he was no prince or heir. He was nothing more than a remnant of Atlantia, the corrupt and twisted kingdom that had fallen at the end of the War of Two Kings. The mythical Thunderbird, in one form or another, was held in awe by practically all of the Indian tribes. On the Great Plains, where the phenomena of thunderstorms was very striking, the Thunderbird was supposed to be a deity in the form of a bird of enormous size, which produced thunder by flapping its wings, and lightning by opening and closing its eyes. These great birds were thought to carry a lake of fresh water on their backs, which caused a great downpour when they flew through the air. Tribes of the Pacific Coast thought the Thunderbird caught whales during a thunderstorm and used its wings as a bow to shoot arrows. Each tribe interpreted the bird differently in its art, as shown on these two pages. The design of the Thunderbird was used to decorate war drums, pottery, and walls and was supposed to protect individuals and tribes from the Evil Spirits.

Blazing missiles of fear fly at you day and night; these attacks from the evil one come at you relentlessly. Use your shield of faith to extinguish those flaming arrows. Affirm your trust in Me, regardless of how you feel.

Beloved, it helps to have an eternal perspective. If your life on earth were all there is, it might be reasonable to run from adversity and seek a life of pleasure. However, your earthly lifespan is miniscule, compared with the Glory that awaits you in heaven. A large part of learning to trust Me is viewing your life through this big-picture perspective. Your openness to accepting adversity as blessing shows that you are indeed learning to trust Me more. Your anticipation of good outcomes in the midst of hard times is a profound form of trust. Remember that the evil one attacks you continually with burning arrows of accusation. If you use your shield of faith skillfully, you can stop those missiles and extinguish their flames. Even if some of the arrows find their mark and wound you, do not despair. I am the Great Physician: My loving Presence can both heal your wounds and train you to trust Me more.

Our Lord God says to each of these souls; “You shall not follow the multitude to do evil: neither shall you yield in judgment to the opinion of the most part.” [941] Vices, and the wicked and their ways and customs unite to do evil; they defend and help each other in their ill-doings. They will not succeed, but when they seem most in accord, they will be bound in bundles to be thrown into hell, where they will pay dearly for the cool and shady road by which they travelled in their life-time.   The judgment and opinions of such people must neither be approved nor followed, for the more there are who share them, the more go astray. Christ alone goes rightly, and all who do not follow him are on the wrong track. You must not be surprised that only one does well and many fail, for there is but one way of hitting the mark—to aim the arrow straight at it—and there are countless ways of missing it. To hit the bull's-eye that wins everlasting life, go by the straight, direct road taken by Christ our Redeemer.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. Weapons are essentially the invention of science, be it our modern nukes or ancient swords and arrows. Yet most of the bloodshed throughout history has been blamed totally upon religion, without a single mention of science being a party to it. If religion has done harm, so has science. If science has done good, so has religion. The fact of the matter is, neither science nor religion is the cause of good and evil in the world, they are merely an excuse. It's the human mind that's the root of all good and evil - science and religion are merely accessory to the intention.

In modern times, however, this lack of inhibitory mechanisms has been dangerously coupled with technological development that puts lethal weapons in our hands—arrows, swords, rifles and guns, dynamite, and chemical and nuclear weapons. For Lorenz, the dissonance between our low inhibitions against moderating aggression and our increasing technological capability for mass destruction is why human beings are the only animals to indulge in mass slaughter of their own species. In other words, we have a capacity for destruction without precedent and, unfortunately, also without the strong inhibitory mechanisms that accompany most animals’ natural weaponry.

We know from the experience of the last twenty years,” wrote Lewis in 1944, “that a terrified and angry pacifism is one of the roads that lead to war.”28 Tolkien decried “the utter stupid waste of war,” yet admitted “it will be necessary to face it in an evil world.”29 Their recourse was to draw us back to the heroic tradition: a mode of thought tempered by the realities of combat and fortified by belief in a God of justice and mercy. Perhaps the character of Faramir, the Captain of Gondor in The Lord of the Rings, expresses it best.30 He possesses humility as well as great courage—a warrior with a “grave tenderness in his eyes”—who takes no delight in the prospect of battle. As such, he conveys a message that bears repeating at the present moment, in a world that is no stranger to the sorrows and ravages of war. “War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all,” he explains. “But I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”31

The laborious pastor, the fervent minister, the ardent evangelist, the faithful teacher, the powerful intercessor, can all trace the birth of their zeal to the sufferings they endured through sin, and the knowledge they thereby attained of its evil nature. We have ever drawn the sharpest arrows from the quiver of our own experience. We find no sword-blades so true in metal as those which have been forged in the furnace of soul-trouble.

Dear Lord, I humbly pray for my husband today. There are many times I have the urge to reprimand or try to fix my husband, yet I am learning that I am not a substitute for Your Holy Spirit. Only You have the power to transform my husband. So I submit my grievances and desires to You and ask that You would radically transform my husband. He is a good man and I love him more than anyone else in this world. I desire the best for him and for our marriage. I implore You to protect our marriage. Strengthen the areas of our relationship that are weak, the parts that are vulnerable to attack or temptation. I pray that my husband and I can build up our marriage together and fight for our love every single day. I pray against evil, I pray against the lust of our flesh, I pray against anything and everything that threatens what we have. Please Lord, wrap us up in Your loving and strong arms and guard us against the flaming arrows of the evil one. May Your Holy Spirit strengthen us each day and remind us to intentionally invest in our marriage. You are so faithful, Lord! I am so thankful You have carried us through some of the most challenging circumstances we have ever encountered. Please continue to show us how to keep our eyes focused on You in Jesus’ name AMEN!

FEBRUARY 7 MY ARROWS OF LIGHT WILL DESTROY THE KINGDOM OF DARKNESS I HAVE PROMISED that I will send out My arrows and scatter the enemy. Do not fear the kingdom of darkness, for I will protect you. Through My unfailing love you will not be shaken. When the enemy appears before you for battle, I will burn them up as in a blazing furnace. My fire will consume them. Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed. My arrows will flash like lightning, and I will destroy them. My sharp arrows will pierce their hearts. I am a righteous judge. I will display My wrath against the kingdom of darkness every day. I will sharpen My sword and will bend and string my bow. Ordain and release Your arrows against my persecutors. Send Your arrows, and scatter the enemy. Let your arrow go forth as lightning against the enemy. MAY 15 SPENDING TIME alone with Me is essential for your well-being. It is not a luxury or an option; it is a necessity. Therefore, do not feel guilty about taking time to be with Me. Remember that Satan is the accuser of believers. He delights in heaping guilt feelings upon you, especially when you are enjoying My Presence. When you feel Satan’s arrows of accusation, you are probably on the right track. Use your shield of faith to protect yourself from him. Talk with Me about what you are experiencing, and ask Me to show you the way forward. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to Me, and I will come near to you. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.” —REVELATION 12:10 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. —EPHESIANS 6:16

When our mind wanders, it is up for grabs, and the devil will take advantage. The devil will give you lots of food for thought. He loves to feed your imagination. He is relentless and merciless and will seize every opportunity to gain access, take control, and devour you. If you are not in control of your mind or imagination, the devil will be happy to do it for you. Ephesians 6:16“Lift up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Flaming arrows are evil thoughts. The devil is sending you evil thoughts all the time. You don’t have to receive them. As a matter of fact, the more you refuse him and reject his thoughts, the sooner he will back off and quit trying.

It was necessary to invent history in order to invent the future. The sense of necessity in Cromwell and Lenin (and even in Jefferson) springs from an obsession with time, change, an obsession with cause and effect that starts to make the effect seem like the cause of its own cause. The future is the cause of the past, and we play antiquarian games to reassure ourselves that the past is past and different so that we can believe that the future will be different too.

Christian schools have often become comfortable sanctuaries where children are sheltered from the devices of the devil, instead of becoming Holy Spirit terrorist training centers that sharpen these arrows for the destruction of evil forces. It is time that we give our children more than a Happy Meal. We need to teach them how to deal with the destructive forces of evil from the time they are little. Kingdom combat training should be part of every homeschooler’s life, every Christian school’s curriculum and every parent’s instruction.

The Armor of God 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

You are blessed and favored, satisfied with God's favor and filled with His blessings. God's wisdom is more precious to you than silver, and its value is greater than gold. You trust in God's power to heal, and Jesus, the Divine Doctor, heals all sickness and disease in your life. You are taught by the Lord, established in holiness and righteousness, and protected by the blood of Jesus. No evil befalls you, and no plague or terror comes near your dwelling. You are surrounded by God's favor, shielded from harm, and brought into divine health, wholeness, and vitality. God's secrets are revealed to you, and you understand heavenly things. You walk in the revelation of God's truth, and His mysteries are no longer hidden from you. You are anointed with the blood of Jesus, blessed abundantly, and you bring glory to God and your family. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every evil arrow sent your way is returned to the sender. Every tongue that rises in judgment against you is condemned, and deceitful, gossiping, slanderous, and accusatory tongues are silenced. Every satanic opposition, dark power, and witchcraft agent coming against you and your children is destroyed at its roots by the fire of God and the blood of Jesus. You are redeemed from the curse of the law, and sickness, disease, pain, and poverty have no power over your life. You are set free from the law of sin and death, and you reign as a king in life through Christ. Your spiritual life is blessed, your health is perfect, your mind is renewed, and your finances are blessed. Success and prosperity follow you, and divine angelic protection is upon your life. You are covered with the blood of Jesus, and the enemy has no power or right over you.

A pouch stuck full of needles may be empowered as a dom for the protection of a person or household. Such a pouch hangs near the entrance of a household to protect against evil spirits and people with evil thoughts. A miniature bow and arrow may be made for a similar purpose. Another variation is the placement of sharp objects, such as knives, nails, broken glass, and needles, outside the building with their points facing outward.

The Whole Armor of God 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power; 11put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, 12for oura struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this presentb darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.c 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having prevailed against everything, to stand firm. 14Stand, therefore, and belt your waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness 15and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace. 16With all of these,d take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. With it all, take the shield of faith; if you’ve got that, you’ll be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is God’s word.

No matter who stands against me, who blames me, who plots evil against me, or who slanders and spreads gossip, God is my Provider and Strength. He nullifies every evil attack and arrow directed at me and my children, in the Name of Jesus Christ and by the Blood of Jesus Christ. He fights for me and gives me justice. With Him on my side, I need not worry about anyone against me.
