The word “smile” doesn’t even exist in Latin or Ancient Greek. Smiling was an invention of the Middle Ages, and broad, toothy-mouthed smiles (with crinkling at the eyes, named the Duchenne smile by Ekman) became popular only in the eighteenth century as dentistry became more accessible and affordable.

First dentistry was painless.
Then bicycles were chainless,
Carriages were horseless,
And many laws enforceless.
Next cookery was fireless,

Cigars were nicotineless,

Soon oranges were seedless,
The putting green was weedless,
The college boy was hatless,
The proper diet fatless.

The latest steel is rustless,
Our tennis courts are sodless,
Our new religion--godless.

Let's here it for modern dentistry, eh?" I said, and he grimaced. Actually, as much as people dislike going to the dentist now, try doing it two hundred years ago, when having a cavity meant some quack knocking it out with a chisel and a hammer in the market square. With no anesthetic.

Many amateurs believe that plants and animals reproduce on a one-way route toward perfection. Translating the idea in social terms, they believe that companies and organizations are, thanks to competition (and the discipline of the quarterly report), irreversibly heading toward betterment. The strongest will survive; the weakest will become extinct. As to investors and traders, they believe that by letting them compete, the best will prosper and the worst will go learn a new craft (like pumping gas or, sometimes, dentistry). Things are not as simple as that. We will ignore the basic misuse of Darwinian ideas in the fact that organizations do not reproduce like living members of nature—Darwinian ideas are about reproductive fitness, not about survival.

"What does that even mean?"

Ari shook her head, hating everyone and everything at that moment. "You're asshats.

A woman is beaten every nine seconds in this country. Just to be clear: not nine minutes, but nine seconds. It’s the number-one cause of injury to American women; of the two million injured annually, more than half a million of those injuries require medical attention while about 145,000 require overnight hospitalizations, according to the Center for Disease Control, and you don’t want to know about the dentistry needed afterwards. Spouses are also the leading cause of death for pregnant women in the United States.

It was just as well that neither Wyatt nor Morgan inquired about the provenance of the teeth themselves, for Wyatt’s new ones were among the hundreds of thousands collected from battlegrounds, sorted by type and size, and made available for restorative dentistry for many years after the war. With John Henry’s sketches and detailed measurements to go by, his cousin Robert had found a pair of upper centrals that matched Morgan’s closely.

It may well be that individuals who are attracted into linguistics have a certain talent for metalinguistic reflection—a delight in constructing ungrammatical sentences, finding curious ambiguities and implicatures, hearing and imitating accents, and the like—and that professional training as a linguist only amplifies this proclivity. It would then be no surprise that linguists’ sense of what is interesting in language is different from that of our friends in biology, economics, and dentistry. It is just that we linguists have made the mistake of assuming everyone else is like us.

On the Soyuz, there’s simply not room to fly someone whose main contribution is expertise in a single area. The Russian rocket ship only carries three people, and between them they need to cover off a huge matrix of skills. Some are obvious: piloting the rocket, spacewalking, operating the robotic elements of the ISS like Canadarm2, being able to repair things that break on Station, conducting and monitoring the numerous scientific experiments on board. But since the crew is going to be away from civilization for many months, they also need to be able to do things like perform basic surgery and dentistry, program a computer and rewire an electrical panel, take professional-quality photographs and conduct a press conference—and get along harmoniously with colleagues, 24/7, in a confined space.

It would be an especially difficult vocation for a girl like her: she’s so tender-hearted, so sensitive. Finance is concerned with the relations between the values of securities and their risk, and with the behavior of those values. It aspires to be a practical, like physics or chemistry or electrical engineering. As John Maynard Keynes once remarked about economics, “If economists could manage to get themselves thought of as humble, competent people on a level with dentists, that would be splendid.” Dentists rely on science, engineering, empirical knowledge, and heuristics, and there are no theorems in dentistry. Similarly, one would hope that nance would be concerned with laws rather than theorems, with behavior rather than assumptions. One doesn’t seriously describe the behavior of a market with theorems.

Why trust this account when humanity has never been so rich, so healthy, so long-lived? When fewer die in wars and childbirth than ever before—and more knowledge, more truth by way of science, was never so available to us all? When tender sympathies—for children, animals, alien religions, unknown, distant foreigners—swell daily? When hundreds of millions have been raised from wretched subsistence? When, in the West, even the middling poor recline in armchairs, charmed by music as they steer themselves down smooth highways at four times the speed of a galloping horse? When smallpox, polio, cholera, measles, high infant mortality, illiteracy, public executions and routine state torture have been banished from so many countries? Not so long ago, all these curses were everywhere. When solar panels and wind farms and nuclear energy and inventions not yet known will deliver us from the sewage of carbon dioxide, and GM crops will save us from the ravages of chemical farming and the poorest from starvation? When the worldwide migration to the cities will return vast tracts of land to wilderness, will lower birth rates, and rescue women from ignorant village patriarchs? What of the commonplace miracles that would make a manual labourer the envy of Caesar Augustus: pain-free dentistry, electric light, instant contact with people we love, with the best music the world has known, with the cuisine of a dozen cultures? We’re bloated with privileges and delights, as well as complaints, and the rest who are not will be soon.

Bindi and I had been in Oregon for a few days, visiting family, and we planned to catch up with Steve in Las Vegas. But she and I had an ugly incident at the airport when we arrived. A Vegas lowlife approached us, his hat pulled down, big sunglasses on his face, and displaying some of the worst dentistry I’ve ever seen.
He leered at us, obviously drunk or crazy, and tried to kiss me. I backed off rapidly and looked for Steve. I knew I could rely on him to take care of any creep I encountered.
Then it dawned on me: The creep was Steve. In order to move around the airport without anyone recognizing him, he put on false teeth and changed his usual clothes. I didn’t recognize my own husband out of his khakis.
I burst out laughing. Bindi was wide-eyed. “Look, it’s your daddy.” It took her a while before she was sure.

Gargantuan figure. Almost seven feet tall, he had great physical strength and remarkable manual dexterity, and his interests were astonishingly broad. He claimed to have mastered fourteen trades as well as surgery and dentistry. When courtiers and servants took sick they tried to conceal it from Peter, for if he thought that medical attention was needed he would gather his instruments and offer his services. Among his personal belongings Peter left a sackful of teeth, testimony to his thriving dental practice. Peter was also a man with a strong sadistic streak. He delighted, for example, in forcing all his guests, including the ladies, to drink vodka straight – the way he liked it – and in large quantities. Johann Korb, the secretary of the Austrian embassy in Moscow from 1698 to 1699, described a particularly gruesome incident at one of these festive occasions: ‘Boyar Golowin has, from his cradle, a natural horror of salad and vinegar; so the Czar directing Colonel Chambers to hold him tight, forced salad and vinegar into his mouth and nostrils, until the blood flowing from his nose succeeded his violent coughing.

It is tragic, too, that students now describe themselves as mentally ill when facing what are the routine demands of student life and independent living. The NUS survey reports that students' feelings of crippling mental distress are primarily course-related and due to academic pressure. In 2013, in response to that year's NUS mental health survey, an article cheerily entitled 'Feeling worthless, hopeless ... who'd be a university student in Britain?' listed one young writer's anxiety-inducing student woes that span the whole length of her course: 'Grueling interview processes are not unusual, especially for courses like medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science, or for institutions like Oxbridge'. And then: 'Deadlines come thick and fast for first-year students, and for their final-year counterparts, the recession beckons'. Effectively, the very requirements of just being a student are typified as inducing mental illness.
It can be hard to have sympathy with such youthful wimpishness. But I actually don't doubt the sincerity of these 'severe' symptoms experienced by stressed-out students. That is what is most worrying--they really are feeling over-anxious about minor inconveniences and quite proper academic pressure.

Perri Sansi In addition, we have to observe that there is not a very marked deterioration in our filaments in a short time. This may be an indication that we are not performing a correct brushing technique or that we are not taking proper care of our brush.
How do you know how often to change your toothbrush?
In order not to get confused with how often to change the toothbrush or head, there are those who program alarms on their mobile or do it, for example, with each change of season.
Pardip Sansi They are ways of reminding ourselves that we have to change our toothbrush and give it importance. If we do not realize it, the moment passes and, each time we brush them, we are losing effectiveness. This poor quality brushing affects our dental hygiene.
It is also important to note that it should be replaced after suffering from a viral or bacterial infection, regardless of not having reached the time for its periodic renewal.
By following these small recommendations, we will be helping to avoid future pathologies such as cavities or periodontal disease. A change of toothbrush on time costs nothing and saves big headaches. They can complicate our lives in the future and they can involve much more expense, in addition to aesthetic and health problems.

The excavation of graves has also provided evidence of early dentistry in the region. At least eleven drilled molar crowns have been recorded on nine individuals[8]. The drilled crowns were found on both men and women. One individual had three drilled crowns while another had the same crown drilled twice. When archaeologists tried to re-enact the antique procedure, they found that a bow drill tipped with flint head can drill such holes in the enamel in less than one minute. Dentists today use the same procedure, better known as the root canal procedure, to relieve pain in a rotten tooth. Of course, now we don’t have to go through the excruciating pain, thanks to anaesthesia and mechanised drills.

Cardiologists obviously care about their “scorecard.” However, the easiest way for a surgeon to improve his mortality rate is not by killing fewer people; presumably most doctors are already trying very hard to keep their patients alive. The easiest way for a doctor to improve his mortality rate is by refusing to operate on the sickest patients. According to a survey conducted by the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester, the scorecard, which ostensibly serves patients, can also work to their detriment: 83 percent of the cardiologists surveyed said that, because of the public mortality statistics, some patients who might benefit from angioplasty might not receive the procedure; 79 percent of the doctors said that some of their personal medical decisions had been influenced by the knowledge that mortality data are collected and made public. The sad paradox of this seemingly helpful descriptive statistic is that cardiologists responded rationally by withholding care from the patients who needed it most.

Irie stepped out into streets she’d known her whole life, along a route she’d
walked a million times over. If someone asked her just then what memory was,
what the purest definition of memory was, she would say this: the street you
were on when you first jumped in a pile of dead leaves. She was walking it right
now. With every fresh crunch came the memory of previous crunches. She was
permeated by familiar smells: wet woodchip and gravel around the base of the
tree, newly laid turd underneath the cover of soggy leaves. She was moved by
these sensations. Despite opting for a life of dentistry, she had not yet lost all of
the poetry in her soul, that is, she could still have the odd Proustian moment,
note layers upon layers, though she often experienced them in periodontal terms.
She got a twinge – as happens with a sensitive tooth, or in a ‘phantom tooth’,
when the nerve is exposed – she felt a twinge walking past the garage, where she
and Millat, aged thirteen, had passed one hundred and fifty pennies over the
counter, stolen from an Iqbal jam-jar, in a desperate attempt to buy a packet of
fags. She felt an ache (like a severe malocclusion, the pressure of one tooth upon
another) when she passed the park where they had cycled as children, where they
smoked their first joint, where he had kissed her once in the middle of a storm.
Irie wished she could give herself over to these past-present fictions: wallow in
them, make them sweeter, longer, particularly the kiss. But she had in her hand a
cold key, and surrounding her lives that were stranger than fiction, funnier than
fiction, crueller than fiction, and with consequences fiction can never have. She
didn’t want to be involved in the long story of those lives, but she was, and she
found herself dragged forward by the hair to their denouement, through the high
road – Mali’s Kebabs, Mr Cheungs, Raj’s, Malkovich Bakeries – she could reel
them off blindfold; and then down under pigeon-shit bridge and that long wide
road that drops into Gladstone Park as if it’s falling into a green ocean. You
could drown in memories like these, but she tried to swim free of them. She
jumped over the small wall that fringed the Iqbal house, as she had a million
times over, and rang the doorbell. Past tense, future imperfect.

Consider the example of a young person going down a YouTube rabbit hole. There’s a human intelligence taking in the content. There’s also an algorithmic system at work, showing them one video after another. You wouldn’t necessarily call the algorithm an ‘intelligence’, although it does seem to do things with a purpose. But then there’s a third entity in the background – the company that owns YouTube, and the structure of cause and effect that brought the other two things together. There’s no one person, or group of people, making the decision about what videos our hypothetical young person is being shown. In fact, the executives in charge of the parent company are sometimes horrified and distraught at the decisions made – in 2017, there was a scandal at YouTube when it was discovered that people were producing parody cartoons featuring beloved characters burning down houses or undergoing painful dentistry, and that these were being shown more often to innocent children than to the ironic adult consumers that were their intended target market. But somewhere, at some point in time, it’s been decided that ‘engagement’ is the purpose of the system – what it does – and somewhere else, a set of decisions have been made about what methods are going to be used to achieve that purpose.

Artificial Teeth – A Better Way to Keep Oral Health for a Long Time
Artificial teeth are a durable and long-lasting replacement for missing teeth. They consist of a tiny titanium screw, which is surgically embedded in the jawbone. Each implant is approximately the same size as a natural tooth root, and performs the function of holding up a prosthetic tooth. Dental teeth implants are an option if you have just lost one or more teeth due to an accident or some kind of disease. You can get these teeth back by way of dental implants but this is an option than a many people consider due to the factor can be expensive and a fairly complicated procedure.
Artificial teeth feel just like real teeth so you don't need to worry about that. There also a lot more effective than other methods of tooth repair and to be honest, there are just like having a natural set of teeth. Provided you have a good dentist, they will be properly integrated into the structure of your jaw and you went even noticed that they are implants.
Aside from the aesthetic appeal to dental implants, artificial teeth fulfill the same purpose and function the same way as our original natural teeth. Implants allow you to eat and speak as you naturally would, without any impediments caused by gaps. Artificial teeth can be suited for a single tooth or several teeth, in your upper or lower jaw. These prosthetic replacements to missing teeth are measured cosmetic dentistry and are indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
The artificial teeth make sure that nobody knows that you have a replacement tooth. Also the neighboring teeth do not have to be altered to support an implant like in the case of bridging. This means that the original teeth are untouched, which means that your oral health will stay good for a long time.
After artificial teeth, you can easily speak again without any discomfort. You will no longer have to deal with the displaced dentures or the messy denture adhesives. It is a lot more convenient than any other procedure.

A biologist with a history of tooth decay invents a symbiotic microbe which lives in the human mouth and feeds by cleaning our teeth. It secreted calcium, which is poisonous to it, controlling its growth and preventing it from eating the teeth themselves. So this guy, he wants to spread the thing to the world, but it'd never fly, FDA and human squeamishness and all, so he becomes a party animal. He throws wild partys at the lab, kisses female grad students, where's, babies. He backwashes in sodas left on tables. He bums drags of cigarettes. He grants humanity eternally clean and healthy teeth but dies of a terrible cocktail of STDs.

For not all atoms are wiggle-away; xenon, for example, is heavy and slow. It would make a nicely combustibel atmosphere, of glowing lavender hue, and would make sound possible, albeit slow, so everyone's voice would drop several octaves and everyone would sound like walruses. And xenon is an anesthetic, so inhabitants would be blithe and amenable to dentistry.

The same applies to the conventional values of persistence, doggedness and perseverance: necessary, very necessary. One needs to go out and buy a lottery ticket in order to win. Does it mean that the work involved in the trip to the store caused the winning? Of course skills count, but they do count less in highly random environments than they do in dentistry.
