The communist Russia I saw was a lot different than our diplomats saw at that time. During the cold war that lasted through the 1980s, our countries were in essence enemies, and didn’t trust one another. There was an element of fear involved. We as fishermen, however, could sit at the same table, drink vodka, talk about women and fishing, and we were friends, even comrades. Just a bunch of fishermen. Really all the same.
