The one universal balm for the trauma of war was tea. It was the thing that helped people cope. But now the war and the strict rationing that came with it threatened to shake even this most prosaic of pillars.

Before dinner each night the two leaders, Hopkins, and various other members of the president’s official family gathered for cocktails in the Red Room.
