Ben Franklin, writing for the Historical Review of Pennsylvania in 1789, famously said, “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Harsh words perhaps, but given Franklin's experience with kings and princes, quite a practical bit of advice.
