Adults who were abused or neglected as children can still learn the beauty of intimacy and mutual trust or have a deep spiritual experience that opens them to a larger universe. In contrast, previously uncontaminated childhood maps can become so distorted by an adult rape or assault that all roads are rerouted into terror or despair. These responses are not reasonable and therefore cannot be changed simply by reframing irrational beliefs.

Don't let other people's template of beauty be your standard. You create your own standard for yourself. Be healthy, and be strong.

Can respected writers’ perceptive soul-searching create a template for my inchoative thoughts spontaneously to mature?

In the OASIS, you got used to seeing freakishly beautiful faces on everyone. But Art3mis’s features didn’t look as though they’d been selected from a beauty drop-down menu on some avatar creation template. Her face had the distinctive look of a real person’s, as if her true features had been scanned in and mapped onto her avatar. Big hazel eyes, rounded cheekbones, a pointy chin, and a perpetual smirk. I found her unbearably attractive. Art3mis’s body was also somewhat unusual. In the OASIS, you usually saw one of two body shapes on female avatars: the absurdly thin yet wildly popular supermodel frame, or the top-heavy, wasp-waisted porn starlet physique (which looked even less natural in the OASIS than it did in the real world). But Art3mis’s frame was short and Rubenesque. All curves.

Stories help us see and understand various micro-moments and aspects of life. They help us better connect and share ideas, lessons, and meaning. They are a beautiful, essential device of conscious life. And stories don’t always have to be real or accurately representative of life, to be helpful and important. But the truth is we appear to so often see life the same way that our favorite stories do. It is no coincidence that most good stories share the same basic structure, ingredients, and shapes. They’re a reflection of how we often like to think, and how we often want the world to be. However, when we assume that our entire life can fit neatly into the template of our favorite stories, or the Hollywood films we are so often inclined to believe and try to model our life after, when we expect or pretend to always know what ultimately good or bad fortune is, we create an expectation in every decision, action, and event, that carries so much pressure we are likely to fear any decision at all.

Do other people share similar feelings of disquiet and despair, and how does a person escape a vortex of suffering? Perchance he can marshal human beings’ innate gifts of memory, language, and consciousness to transform his vile existence. Perhaps by studiously examining the self and seeking to unite all disparate parts of a fragmented psyche, he will become a thoughtful, considerate, and affectionate man who lives joyfully without pangs of pain, shame, and misgivings. The goal of this vision quest is to attain personal harmony with the world and enjoy an admirable state of attentive mindfulness after investigating and expressing all that is sayable pertaining the meaning of existence and the unique features of being human. The author aspires to discard frivolous attachments, pierce mental delusions, and attain a peaceful state of serenity by accepting reality and appreciating the incomparable beauty of this magnificent world and the little pleasures that each unfolding day affords. Perhaps writing of his struggles to transcend his own pain and develop the wisdom and serenity of the mind that comes from living an examined life might even provide a template for other people explore their own life story.

She wrote novels on paper napkins. Sometimes she scribbled on newspapers that the men in suits left behind and made her own poetry with the crossword templates on the back.
